Not so sure about that Kye… I just need AF tracking to work for anything where someone is walking towards me. On a wedding day, the total time this happens for us about 2 minutes out of 9-15 hours coverage. Those 2 minutes are critical stuff though; entrance of the bride/bridal party, exit of the couple, confetti aisles, sparkler aisles and maybe some exclusive couple stuff. This is where DFD is totally unreliable. Sometimes it will work near faultlessly. Other times not at all. Mostly it’s somewhere between. I have come close so many times to just biting the bullet and trading it all for something more reliable just because of this specific issue. Ultimately though, I have decided against and instead found a workaround as the rest of the package is too good to junk. The workaround is on camera, hotshoe mounted action cam as backup. OK the footage won’t be the same quality and some (hopefully most!) of the time, I will be able to extract a 3 second in focus clip from the 5-10 sequences per wedding where I need to use AF tracking. But if not, I’ll just have to cut in some action cam footage creatively so it doesn’t look out of place. After all, I have been cutting in the same size sensor drone footage for 3 years so why not? The rest of the time, DFD is pretty decent/no issues. However, I am going back to manual focus for anything that isn’t the 2 minutes of every job that needs AF tracking in order to eliminate 100% any potential for even slightly OOF shots. I’m also ditching IBIS for 90% of the day and going back to freestanding monopod as that eliminates that weird sideways jump glitch that IBIS sometimes throws up! It will almost be like working like a proper pro… Even a Canon R5c would make sense to me now 😬3 points

My two cents about all this. Rumour sites: like them, because sometimes it could help you with purchase decisions. But all of them, without exception, should be name "fansites". Never anything could be said there except praise to the brand in question, even if you like the brand, even if you want to give constructive feedback to make the brand you like even better. Brand worship is everywhere - even here.My take is that people invest a lot in a brand / mount and just want a confirmation bias and want to justify their purchase - it is a thing not exclusive to the photo industry, smartphone industry is the same. These people forget some basic things: 1) The brand X could be REALLY better for you, even if everyone say the contrary. Don't get offended by bad things said to "your" brand - no brand is perfect. Filter it, see if it its a legitamte flaw, see if it is really a flaw FOR YOU, and if it is a thing, if you can circunvent it. A problem is only a problem if it affects you. Case in point: AF for video. For some people, it is a very important issue for some people - gimbal people, action people, some wedding cases (@MrSMW gave a very good example of it). It is non issue for other people - all of the movie industry which have amazing focus pullers, people in controlled enviroments, interview shots (amaze me people testing af in static shots videos - why?). It is a issue for you or not? In each case, don't dismiss the other camp, just look if it a issue FOR YOU. 2) ALL BRANDS have good and bad points - and all these point follows the 1 rule, all bad points and good / bad FOR YOU. I was a m43 user. Still love the portability of the lenses, still have a soft point for the format - but it have bad / good points. Moved to Fuji, liking it too. FOR ME, it is working better than m43 - but I will never say that m43 is crap IN ALL INSTANCES. And yes, even liking Fuji, there were some point that m43 is better (could changing ISO with a huge overlay screen without histogram to choose the right ISO is my number one point). No brand is perfect. NOTHING is perfect in this life. Is just a brand, for fuck sake. Don't worship it. ============================================= About internet trollism: in the past, information was spread by media outlets. Interests aside, at least, in most cases, it was vetted for somewhat reasonable people, in both "sides" - and I live in a country with media dictated by interests for the last 50 years; even then, there was more reason than the current times. People still don know how easy is to "make" trending news nowadays - a little bit of money invested in specialized companies with dedicated teams with robots could make anything relevant. And I'm a TI guy, REALLY know how easy is to do it. For 95% of the people, if "everyone" (in your bubble) is talking about it, it is true. Because it is kinda was in the past - lies where spread because of interests, but insanity was more or less filtered. Bad for our dreams of free speech and liberty, but now we were seeing that freedom without knowledge is troublesome. And no, I don't see a solution for it in the shor term. For my part, I hear everything - even from some disgusting sources. Register it in the head, in 95% of the cases is bullshit, but even now and them you could get something good. Case in camera industry: Ken Rockwell. 95% of what he says is VERY bad, but I've got some good tips from him. Never will spread his word, but for my personal filter, is useful. These are very dark times - sometimes I wonder if it was a good idea to bring a 3 yeas old girl to this world. But it is too late, and I just wish I can help her to live in this sea of hate. Hope I can.2 points -

My take is fundamentally different, and I expect to get pushback on this, but I don't think it's getting worse at all. Not picking on you @Marcio Kabke Pinheiro - the "it's all going wrong" narrative is pretty common around here. I think the fundamental issues are to do with humanity and the aggressive parts of our nature. That hasn't changed. Anyone who thinks the current period in history is bad should review history and see how things used to be. Life used to be brutal and short. In almost all cases "might made right" and the golden rule was the only rule - he that has the gold makes the rules. Social media isn't bad at all, it's just an echo chamber. If you don't like the echos you're hearing then find another chamber. Actually, find 27 other chambers. Find something that inspires you. My favourite YouTubers are metalworkers and woodworkers and are building their own homes or cabins in the woods or write music or cook or talk about town planning or explain philosophy or mathematics or physics or economics or travel or living in other cultures/places or.... <and I stopped here, but I was only up to G in my subscriber list> This advice goes for me too, as I need to spend less time on social. I'm trying to read more. I'm actually looking for more hobbies as the pandemic has limited things for so long that I need to have some new things in the mix to break things up and inspire me again.1 point -
The film curves that I have seen typically have about 5-6 stops in the "linear" range, then hit the roll-offs pretty hard after that, so your curve seems to be right around what I would expect. I recall a landscape photographer I watch on YT taking out a medium format camera with an older stock that had something like 5-6 stops in total. After carefully metering the scene he took a shot of some clouds. The shot was absolutely amazing - the moodiest clouds I have ever seen! Just incredible contrast, but looked great because nothing was clipping and the image was thick as hell. In colour grading I've found a consistent challenge is how to get the 10+ stops of camera DR into the 709 container and not make it look unnatural - the rolloffs on your LUT look pretty nice in that regard 🙂1 point

In this regard, the best thng that could happen to m43 is DJI entering the market full stop. That Lidar AF is amazing. But it will not happen.1 point -
Lenses
PannySVHS reacted to Marcio Kabke Pinheiro for a topic
After seeing the value of the 35m f/2, I was somewhat torn; if I could sell it for the market prices, it would help to get a newer camera, and probably the lens could arrive in better hands to use it (remember, I'm an amateur, and with Covid and other work issues I barely shoot at all). But I've got the lens, put it in my X-S10 with a passive adapter, and made some clips of my daughter, my wife and my mother-in-law, inside the house. Looking at the images, I understood all the hype, the footage was beautiful. 🙂 Lens will stay here, except if the prices goes much more crazy. Little side note - did not used my vintage ones since I moved to Fuji, but looks like that all the talk about thickness of the sensor stack (Fuji is much thinner than m4/3) is real - the footage from the lens was much sharper than the same lens on my Panasonics. Very sharp, but not in a digital way.1 point -

I use a GH5 and it's enough camera for my skills and modest ambitions. But for the sake of MFT survival, if the GH6 is evolutionary and not revolutionary then they might as well call it a GH5 III -- just how well did the GH5 II sell anyway?1 point -
OM-1 is better than OMD E=MC2 EMiii etc Just make the next camera OM-2…if they survive and the leaked pics do indeed show the use of the OLYMPUS brand name with the company name, bottom right. I hope it’s a decent bit of kit as the industry needs success stories not more criticism of yet another new camera that doesn’t hit the spot for the majority. Z9 and A7iv other than a few niggles seem to have been well received recently, some others less so.1 point

35mm photo film emulation - LUT design
hyalinejim reacted to MrSMW for a topic
I’ll have another play later, but deliberately chose a tricky bit of footage! I like Nitrate, but their Portra 400 is not even slightly close to film with S1H v log. Neither is the Velvia which is a vibrant film stock. The Nitrate version is very flat and yellowy/green. It could be they are all miles off with the S1H camera pack… On the other hand, the way you can adjust the log footage is reckoned to be better than the equivalent Lumetri controls and my (limited) experience is that is true. I will play with both later, your @hyalinejim LUT and Nitrate in general…1 point -

By the way that Mandalorian article had other interesting parts pertaining to aesthetics and creation/use of custom film stock LUTs: “Our desire for cinematic imagery drove every choice,” Idoine adds. And that included the incorporation of a LUT emulating Kodak’s short-lived 500T 5230 color negative, a favorite of Fraser’s. “I used that stock on Killing Them Softly[AC Oct. ’12] and Foxcatcher [AC Dec. ’14], and I just loved its creamy shadows and the slight magenta cast in the highlights,” says Fraser. “For Rogue One, ILM was able to develop a LUT that emulated it, and I’ve been using that LUT ever since.” “Foxcatcher was the last film I shot on the stock, and then Kodak discontinued it,” continues Fraser. “At the time, we had some stock left over and I asked the production if we could donate it to an Australian film student and they said ‘yes,’ so we sent several boxes to Australia. When I was prepping Rogue One, I decided that was the look I wanted — this 5230 stock — but it was gone. On a long shot, I wrote an email to the film student to see if he had any stock left and, unbelievably, he had 50 feet in the bottom of his fridge. I had him send that directly to ILM and they created a LUT from it that I used on Rogue and now Mandalorian.” And on a side note while the show is shot on AlexaLF, all the backdrops used in the virtual production were shot on Canon 5DIV & 5DS. A 5D3 was even used in season one to do old-school first trilogy type stop motion sequences: Who would have thought Canon DSLRs would be so prevalent in such a cutting-edge high budget show?!1 point -
Yeah, I'm on some vintage lenses groups and people are constantly buying lenses, matching, cinemodding / rehousing, and completing sets, which then get casually listed for 4 or 5, or even 6-figures. There are also people new to things and just buying their first Helios or CZ, it's a real mixture. A month or two ago someone posted asking for info on a prototype lens which he believed to be from Panavision. Apparently it was a development prototype of a lens that never made it to production and something happened and the person was told to throw it out, so they put it in their bin at their desk and someone else immediately took it out and took it home lol.1 point

You can download sample Alexa footage here and here in raw and in ProRes: https://www.arri.com/en/learn-help/learn-help-camera-system/camera-sample-footage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs1dS8pMvRw I can't think of a softer digital camera in use today. I suspect this is because Arri was originally looking to emulate a 2K film scan. Which is pretty soft. But they've since discontinued the film emulation matrix. And added the 3.2k mode, the LF, etc. Each iteration feels less and less like "film." And with each iteration, Canon and Sony and Red (and lately Panasonic and Black Magic) look more and more like Alexa. Everything looks the same now!1 point -
Lenses are putting a practical limit on DR to 14 stops?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Well to me the biggest thing about DR that most people don't realize is that you Have to stay at the sensor's base ISO or you are just wasting your time at any other ISO. Now some of the newer cameras have dual ISO and that does really help on that front.1 point -

Certainly came out of the blue, did this from Craig. I wish him all the best. Sounds like he needs a break like me. If he sold the site to a good home, and took a good pay cheque from it I hope he can build something fresh and new out of that and use the money to take a good photographic adventure. Social media brings out the worst instincts in human beings. Tribal behaviours. Epidemic misinformation and lies. I didn't see what has been going on with Craig, but he seems to have completely deleted his Twitter and closed up shop there. The internet is fucked. Facebook can go out of business as far as I'm concerned, and they've ruined Instagram / WhatsApp too, so they can go in the bin along with the whole Meta group. Fuck VR as well. Nobody wants this shit. It's a distraction at best, at worst it can takes lives or destroys democratic political system. Facebook and social media has sucked so much life out of my own business - this forum would be busier too, if it weren't for the distraction of Facebook groups and Twitter. Thankfully $200 billion shaved off FB's share price this week so couldn't happen to a nicer company. I haven't always seen eye to eye with any of the rumours sites. But I genuinely do wish Craig well in what he does next1 point -
