Steve Huff On The Camera Review Game
Andrew Reid and 3 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
This is an interesting video from the host of one of the more long running camera review websites. I don't know whether he has recently found God or recently found himself off the favoured reviewers list but for whatever reason he has decided to spill some of the beans about his fourteen year history in the game. I say some of the beans as, although he gives specific detail about one source of revenue (the affiliate deal with B&H), he leaves it up to the viewer to extrapolate an estimate of the overall total when including the other streams such as Amazon, advertising and sponsorship etc. He also holds back much in terms of too many specifics amongst the war stories of complementary trips, free or heavily discounted gear, passive agressive editorial control and so on. However, there is enough there to put the picture together about his own activities as well as more than enough hint of how his own discomfort with it have caused him to reign it in whereas a great number most definitely haven't. Obviously, most of us will file this under "absolutely not shocked at all" My own view of Steve Huff was that he seemed personable enough but that he seemingly never came across a product that he didn't like. Which is an obvious red flag. On the generous side, you could say that that was due to him being so enthusiastic about gear. Or, on the less generous side, you could say that he lacked sufficient judgement to differentiate between good and great. Or, most cynically, you could say he was just simply "at it" and every new wow equalled more affiliate clicks. Clearly, the money that he has declared from B&H shows that he was obviously "at it" to a certain degree and I don't think anyone would do a public confessional video if they too didn't accept that they were "at it" either. But the majority of his income was based around the website rather than YouTube so the degree to which he was nakedly "at it" compared to some of his latter day peers was likely a bit more of a side effect than the whole raison d'etre of the new wave of teleshopping hosts. I was quite interested in footage he had in there of earlier promotional trips and how wide eyed giddy many of the invitees seemed to be. I bet the marketing arms of these companies absolutely wet themselves when they realised how easy and cheap it was to drive sales without so much as a half page ad buy in a magazine. It seems if you didn't feel generous enough to give a free camera away to an attendee then just massaging their ego with the invite and a discount on retail was enough. I hope that the what I would politely describe as "whining cunts" who trail our very own host of this ad-free and affiliate link free website around social media posting shitty replies to his posts watch this video. They want everyone to be polite nice guys who keep their criticisms of manufacturers to themselves while they show them slow motion B roll and make them feel better about their purchases. Well, here's one of your politest nice guys and guess what? He was at it. For years.4 points -

what if they'd shot it at like f/5.6 though, imagine how much better it would've looked. maybe they might have even missed focus less? full frame video and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race4 points -

You have to have a Really stable tripod and a good fluid head to get the best out of the lens. A B4 lens like it will cover m4/3 with a 2x doubler. It will cover the s16 senor at medium to long lengths without even using the doubler. That lens cost like $8000.00 40 years ago. They are super good quality. They make normal a camera look like a toy. But they weigh a lot, but that is a good thing for stability on an ENG camera that weighs a lot also. The ENG rig I used the most weighed over 20 pounds. But you get used to it, and they were rock solid once you used them for a few weeks. Hardest thing was learning how to walk backwards fast, which you did more than forward it seemed. I covered a lot of courthouse cases. Really hectic stuff in the hallways. My rig cost close to $100,000.00 new, $20,000.00 tripod and fluid head, that was in 1980's money. 3 Tube 2/3" tape cameras, a whopping 480i was my first one. Never got to 1080p ENG wise, I bought a lot of Sony CCD ones later on my own. I had a company that shot TV commercials for about 5 years. My writer quit and so did I lol. It takes a very special talent to come up with new stuff to do.2 points -
After reading that the minolta mc 28mm 3.5 lens is a secret keeper that's often overlooked due to its speed, I was really pleased by it's sharpness and look after some lens tests. Payed 30 bucks for it. Which is still a normal price today. When shooting a short film in Norway, I wanted to challenge myself with just one lens. I went with the 28mm 3.5 on my pocket 4k since that would be about 35mm in super 35, which scorsese for example loves and other filmmakers have sticked to during longer periods of a film. I find the 28mm 3.5 a tiny bit sharper than the minolta 28mm 2.8's I have tested. Well here is the result and I am quite happy with some of the images.1 point

He does supernatural investigation videos too. Maybe he got a tip off from the other side that the end was nigh for camera reviews. Equally they might have told him to repent.1 point -

He pivoted to high end audio gear reviews - probably is more profitable (no problem for me with that) and less toxic than the camera game. Looks like it is not unusual - in a small channel that I like (Andrew & Denae) Andrew decided to make a channel about the mountain bike restorations that he make (he, his wife and 2 children enjoy mountain biking, and to lessen the bike shop costs he built a personal bike shop at home), and in two videos he got almost 4x the subscribers that they got in many years reviewing cameras. I too have the same impression that Steve never disliked a camera - pointed some faults at most - but he always declared that he only reviews cameras that interested him, hence there is a pre-filter.1 point -

Also ages ago i found this site which focusses (no pun intended ) on lens ring flares and the lenses for it. Which might save you some time and effort if this is the effect your after Real Lens Flare - Done The Right Way (slrlounge.com)1 point -

That does sound like the best combination. I never use IBIS for walking, anything that needs more than simple hand holding and I put the camera on a gimbal, tripod, or monopod.1 point -

My experience has been very good with two Sigma lenses and AFC (Area+ Human/Animal detect on) for video recording. Both 4K 60P 10-bit 422 and 5.9K 30P 12-bit RAW (both to external Atomos Ninja V). The two lenses I use are: 1. Sigma 14-24mm DG DN f/2.8 Art - Firmware updated to version 1.3 2. Sigma 24-70mm DG DN f/2.8 Art - Firmware also updated to version 1.3 Panasonic Lumix S5 is currently on firmware 2.4 (some bluetooth fixes since version 2.3, no AF changes mentioned in release notes). In a variety of lighting situations, I'm able to move from subject to subject and have the focus work well to my expectations. This is even when at 70mm. Linear focus support in MF was also added to the Sigma lenses with this firmware update. You still need to use a USB L-Mount dock and the Sigma optimization software to adjust the focus through (runs just fine on my 14" MacBook Pro M1 Max, so the software is Apple Silicon compatible). The dock is not needed for firmware updates, you can do them in camera just like Panasonic lens updates. In addition, the default Linear MF is good, so adjusting it might not be necessary for most. For those that have the lenses already, try updating them and giving the AF another test. As for photography, these are excellent as well.1 point -
99% certain it will be, “or…” I just can’t see Panny Boy popping out a new S5 in what has been under 1.5 years since it’s launch. If anything, the S1 line would come next and possibly they might merge the two as they have mentioned size themselves before. Plus the GH6 just came out and it’s a competitor for the S5 for sure. Other than the OM-1, it’s the most compared pairing. I think it’s just lower than desired sales, especially compared with Sony. I have zero evidence of that, just opinion. That is a cracking deal however!1 point

That is a B4 adapter, and the lens has an internal 2x. That lens is not really 4K ready, but it can do 2K pretty easy. It ends up being close to a 500mm f1.7 lens, and with the Doubler in it ends up a 1000mm 4.0 Parafocal lens. I bought the lens, B4 adapter, that battery pack on the rear and the cable on Ebay for 90 dollars 6 months ago.1 point -
Is the EOS-M *THE* Digital Super-8 Camera?

I'm starting to test out raw shooting with this camera again. The mlvapp workflow is definitely faster with my Macbook Air M1 than with my old PC when I first tried out raw 5 years ago. I just got a good deal on an Angenieux 8-64mm f/1.9 (as well as a loupe and pistol grip for Super 8 style shooting) that I'm dying to try out.1 point -

The 3:1 compressed raw is a good compromise between ProRes HQ and uncompressed CDNG raw; you get nearly all the latitude of uncompressed raw without the ginormous file sizes. I've been shooting 3:1 raw on the BMMCC for a few years now and liking it, although Prores HQ is no slouch and can take a lot of grading and adjustment of white balance etc. as kye noted above. My favourite monitor with this camera is the SmallHD Focus, which is discontinued but presumably very much available on the used market. I also have the Atomos Shinobi, which works but I much prefer SmallHD (better UI, more and better-implemented features). I have the 5" video assist as well but only use it if I need a recorder. In addition to using it for video, I've been having fun using it for stills: the actual CDNG files are only 2 megapixels in resolution so it's far from ideal, but if I'm shooting portraits I'll bring my BMMCC along and just let it run, going through the footage afterward and stopping on a good frame, grading it in Resolve, grabbing a still, exporting a TIFF, and the upscaling it in any photo processing app like Affinity Photo or ON1. When your camera is capturing 24 or more frames per second, there's a good chance it'll catch the moments you just missed with a stills camera. If you set the shutter angle to 45 degrees you'll get terrible video (herky jerky like the beginning moments of Saving Private Ryan) but better stills since they'll have less motion blur. Unless you want motion blur, which I sometimes do.1 point

Analysing other people's edits
leslie reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
I think we over think a lot of this stuff. I follow a lot of people on YouTube and most of them, well all of them are just regular people, mostly with a GoPro and a Drone and since it is them and their content I overlook a lot of editing because the content is so interesting. And surprisingly their editing isn't that bad. The more you do the better you get. I don't think if it were shot on an Arri it would be much better. Not when you are knocking out videos every day or so. I just look forward to new content and consider some almost like family I have following them so long. I am even a Patreon on most of them.1 point -
Hi, Thanks for the replies, I now have it working. Initially on the 'input tab' on the Ninja it is set to a default of "Compatibility" which I expected the Ninja to auto detect the output however it appears not. When quickly toggling between the modes nothing was happening however it now seems it needs 5 seconds or more to go live with the signal after being selected. When I leave the input to "HDMI 1.4" it now works as expected. My main fear was that there was a hardware issue with the camera itself. See photo below of the settings. hope this helps Simon1 point

Coincidentally, Shane from Geeky Nerdy Techy came out with a new video describing his "best practices" for focusing on the GH5 II and the S5 (as well as the older GH5 and GH5S). it is definitely worth a watch: I don't think there is a 1:1 macro lens for L Mount... maybe Sigma has one. But in general, the continuous autofocus of sigma lenses is pretty bad (for video, at least). Viltrox makes some Extension Tubes for L-Mount now, so that should get you pretty close to 1:1 macro (you might have to use multiple tubes). The problem with extension tubes is that you lose light / have to raise your ISO / lower shutter speed. you might be able to adapt a macro lens. I think Sigma made old DSLR macro lenses in 70mm and 105mm??? In which case, it might be best to find them in a Nikon mount and then buy a Nikon F to L-Mount adapter. The issue is the ADAPTER must have a way to adjust the aperture of the lens, since I believe those lenses don't have aperture rings on the lens. Tamron also made a 90mm f/2.8 and I think Tokina has a macro lens around 100mm and f/2.8 All of those would need an adapter that could adjust the aperture and would be manual focus. Then there are vintage manual focus lenses from Olympus and Nikon and Canon and Pentax and Minolta.1 point -
The old nikon 28-70mm 2.8 with speedbooster is a f1.8 Lens uf you want to compare it to native m43 lenses. Buy a copy with broken autofocus, it should cost around 200€ It's actually pretty good.1 point
