  1. I tested out the new C70 firmware today and shot in Cinema RAW LT at 30FPS. On a whim, I directed the RAW footage to record to my V30 card and it actually recorded fine. I just shot a few seconds of footage to test out playback on my editing system and to see if my SD cards could handle it. I definitely think my 1TB SandDisk Extreme Pro cards are rock solid, it was almost comical seeing 411 min of recording time available when recording to the 1TB card in RAW LT. When I tested RAW LT at 60FPS though it buffer overflowed immediately. So my storage concerns were definitely unwarranted; this camera, despite its faults is really turning into a rock solid workhorse for me. Below is a quick table that I put together to show the codecs that I care about and their recording times. SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB V30 Canon RAW LT -> 29.97FPS -> Recording Time 422min Canon XF-AVC Long GOP -> 29.97FPS -> Recording Time 852min Canon XF-AVC Long GOP -> 59.97FPS -> Recording Time 524min ProGrade 256GB V90 Canon RAW ST -> 29.97FPS -> 68min Canon RAW LT -> 29.97FPS -> Recording Time 105min Canon RAW LT -> 59.97FPS -> Recording Time 52min Canon XF-AVC Long GOP -> 29.97FPS -> Recording Time 213min Canon XF-AVC Long GOP -> 59.97FPS -> Recording Time 131min Also, the Canon RAW LT at 29.97FPS seems to have a bitrate of 322Mb/s which is a data rate of 40MB/s, which is only half the 80MB/s that my SanDisk V30 card registered during its tests so I should be pretty safe with it. I will definitely keep the ProGrade cards in my bag, but it looks like for 90% of my work I am fine with keeping two 1TB SanDisk Pro cards in the camera with it set to dual slot recording. If I shoot a project that requires raw footage I will probably just use two ProGrade cards, not worth the headache of trying to remember which footage gets recorded to where depending on framerate.

    Canon EOS R5C

Got the R5c today, checked the video AF and it locked on fine. 512GB only last 30min of 8k50p, on 5.9k 50p it last nearly an hour which is more doable. Might have to use the speedbooster again for 5.9k raw 🤔 And battery life is much worse than R5, 4k50p last 40 something min so I guess I will be pairing with my 18w pd powerbank for long tripod shoot.. Btw absolutely no video on photo mode. You have to switch mode to do video and vice versa. Body and operating wise it feels like mini c70 when shooting video, better balance with lens than R5 I reckon.

  3. Well, we all know how optimistic those manufacturers dynamic range specs are, but yes, Sony are up there in DR.

  4. Hello everyone ... I preferred to open a new topic rather than continue to abuse "my Journey to virtual production" With the carnival I was able to do some more tests with unreal and this time for I recorded my subject up against a yellow wall ... As you can see, in controlled working conditions, the results can be really good ... Obviously there is still a lot of room for improvement, for example I have to synchronize the two video tracks by recording a common audio track, I have to balance the gimbal better (I have a crane-m and with the mobile phone mounted I exceed the grams it can support, so it vibrates a lot) , but apart from that, if I had an actress who does something sensible apart from shooting all the time 🙂 I might at this point think I can shoot something decent ... What do you think? Opinions, advice?

  5. C70's raw file size is much more manageable than c200/c300's 1gbps monster and that's only 10bit in 4k50/60p vs 12bit on c70. The 2k raw is even usable in wedding too lol (for ceremony, not sure about reception cause of lowlight on s16 crop). This raw update really makes c70 attractive! No need bulky external monitor + battery if you want compact raw cinema camera.

  6. I have a proart PA248QV. It is also a lower cost type of this series, 24 inch. It comes "calibrated" out of the factory. Side-by-side to my much more expensive Dell 24", which has been calibrated with a Spider, it looks better/more accurate. Getting into the hassle of recalibrating, more expenses for a (used?) calibration device etc. is only worth it if you are in a VERY controlled environment, with a fixed lighting setting. I think for REC709 these kind of displays should be quite reliable - although certainly not reference grade ... Benq has a very interesting photo/video series, which can switch between photographic and video modes easily, but at 4x the cost (which is still quite cheap). The Asus proart series easily goes to 5K euro, but I think there is not 1 model able to do 24p (natively). If you need that, you need to look at the Benq video series.

  7. I can see what you mean but from my perspective it does indeed matter other the guy is doing, especially as they are fucking the life out of the internet as a viable business, as well as normalising bribery and reducing the viability of my business model at EOSHD, at the same time as taking 80% of my audience away. The whole internet is only going to be fit for the dustbin and we won’t have any community left.

  8. Yeah, and actually the absolute DR doesn't really matter either - what is important is having the same people test the other cameras in the same way so that the relative comparisons are valid. I read an interesting comment about the Alexa Classic on the CineD test for it, which basically amounted to it testing at about 14 stops of DR, but that was RAW and with NR it could get another few stops above that. Interestingly, a lot of the other cameras they test aren't RAW and so already have the NR (and smoothing from compression) applied - so if you're comparing a h264 camera with an Alexa then potentially the Alexa might actually have 17 stops in comparison, but maybe when comparing it to a RAW shooting camera then 14 is the relevant number. That struck me as being another whole variable on top of their numbers that they didn't seem to talk about much (I've read lost of their lab tests when I reviewed camera DR and put together my spreadsheet for it) and I also don't know that much about either. Fun stuff. I should really go read the technical manual for the software they use so I understand the charts better.

  9. I am demotivated. In fact, I have come to believe it is the audience and consumers who are to blame for the current situation, as much as the shills. Speaking not about you guys but more generally in terms of the interest in cameras, perhaps best epitomised by Philip Bloom's followers - A lot of people simply don't value the principals which drive a free and open internet. A lot don't even understand what they are. As Steve said in his video, he started reviewing cameras as a hobby. When a hobby stops being fun there is no point to it, or it becomes a chore to keep up with paying the bills which is what EOSHD has currently become to me. The reason the ad dollars and shills have won the entire internet is because followers let them.

  10. I quite like Mr Huff and his understated enthusiasm, especially for Leica and Sigma products…though I think he might have gone off Leica recently, or for a while. Personally I don’t care what any of them get or receive from any brand. Whether they are a brand ambassador, a paid shill, an unpaid shill, a genuine enthusiast or a complete fuckwit, I take it all with a pinch of salt and make my own mind up. I think with Huff he can be a little bit ‘kid in the sweet shop’ at times over new kit, as so many can be, mainly only finding the new good stuff, but you need to live with something long term to get a more balanced picture.

  13. If you're paying retail, $100K isn't a high end system... it's a very nice turntable, without a preamp!

Monitor for both photo & film

An average monitor that's been calibrated will be better than the most expensive monitor available that hasn't been calibrated. There is no such thing as an "accurate" monitor without calibration. Buy a calibration device and then go looking for a monitor. When you do this you can calibrate your laptop screen as well.

  16. Yeah buy the NEC PA301W, not going to find anything better for less than 300.

  17. Yeah I was into to it also for 10 or more years. High end audio is like owning a 40 foot power boat, endless money pit. And what is funny by the time you can afford to do it you are already losing your hearing. So a big waste of time and money.
