His "Miracle Box" app for communicating with spirits seems to be doing quite well for him. He just needs to be careful that the spirits he's communicating with don't have names that can inadvertently lead to creating phrases that are so hilarious that they can bring the facade of even leading TV programmes about it crashing down.3 points

The usefulness of resolution depends how close you will sit to any given screen. A BMPCC with a better body definitely would have been nice to have.3 points

You said "some would argue that is a bit of progress" and I pointed out that the DR hasn't increased and the battery life also hasn't really increased. That was 5 years after the OG BMPCC. Personally, I think that given the huge increase in size and the time elapsed they could have made more substantial improvements to it. If you can't see it then that's fine - more power to you, but just because you can't see it doesn't make it fake. Otherwise, most of the stuff on earth is fake because I haven't seen it. Actually, I think that a staggeringly huge number of people have 4K TVs now. That's the whole point of the manufacturers flogging 4K and then 6K and now 8K and 12K. They aren't doing that to sell more cameras, they're doing that to sell more TVs. Go to your nearest big box store and see if they even sell a 1080p TV above a certain size.... I just went to target.com and looked at TVs from 30" up (they sell tiny portable ones too) and the cheapest one a 50" 4K for $319.2 points

The Batman
MrSMW reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
The Batman was aesthetically bold and brave for a blockbuster. It looked like the most expensive art house film ever made. I loved the blurry murkiness of it all and the interesting characterful feel of the image. It added to the overall story greatly. It almost always looked out of focus and I didn’t care. Great to see that modified Soviet lenses were used here and there (Iron Glass Adapters). It’s a refreshing change from all the other clinical perfect Marvel movies firing out of Disney’s ovaries. Also thought the slow pace, and Robert’s very awkward and similarly slow, clunky movement made the character feel grippingly tortured, and often, weird. I liked they left out a lot of sweeping aerial establishing shots and setup most locations as if you’re looking through a rain soaked window. The score was also haunting and moved things along eerily in synchronisation with Robert’s weighted posture. Overall, very impressed. Unforgettable cinematography. Great all round. Relatable to this, I’ve been dropping all my clinical boring Sony lenses and making life hard with Lensbaby’s and heavily modified Russian glass. 😂1 point -
My favourite line from the description is : It will not work for everyone (no app or box does). I was curious about the reviews, this one on Play store caught my eye : It actually works!!!! Not fake like the other apps. I just wonder how many spirit decoder apps one has to go through first before thinking that maybe its a load of old bollocks. My limit would be less than one so credit to that user for having the patience to do the heavy lifting for everyone else so that they can now buy the real deal. Maybe you can review lenses that can spot unbiased reviews on YouTube? Probably need to start with something like this though.1 point

In 2021 My 5 year old nephew made almost the same money doing videos on YouTube than I made doing videos for clients. That's true. So, there ya go. I've thought very hard about whether or not I should try and do some sort of production for YT monetization. I've decided I'd rather not. I'm just not interested in chasing that stuff. I don't have any passion for it.1 point -

Like they say... gotta be in it to win it! I'm just guessing here, but you prefer 4K images don't you? I shoot travel, often on the more adventure side of travel too. I love it when people tell me to control the scene. Please tell me how I can better control: a landscape being shot out the window of a moving helicopter a sunset the buildings and people in a large city a cave while taking the tour a museum or world heritage site (eg, Pompeii) an amusement park with rides a market in an emerging economic country etc Next you'll be telling me I don't need a weather-sealed camera because I should just control the weather! To directly answer your question, yes, I need more DR. and more robust images where I don't have to choose between photographing the sunset or the scene in front of it. I bought the OG BMPCC and BMMCC specifically to study their images, both for the colour science and for their mojo. I have studied them at length - you can find a small proportion of the tests I have done littered all through these forums over a period of years. I am yet to locate almost anything that accounts for these factors that you claim do not exist. No, but I have shot both the OG BMPCC and BMMCC alongside the GH5 and tried to match the GH5 to the BM camera on many occasions (just search). P4K footage looks like GH5 footage, but better. Neither looks much like the OG. You don't like videographers do you? I see this kind of dismissive prejudice all the time from snooty "film-makers". The general tone is that "real film-makers" shoot in controlled conditions and should be free to create images that have nice colour and background separation and images that are expressive, and the people that don't shoot in controlled conditions should be happy with footage that looks like it was shot with a smartphone from 6 years ago. It's kind of like when people say "go back to wherever you came from - you're not welcome here" only instead of 'here' being a place, it's a level of image quality.1 point

The S1H and S1 seem to have more noise reduction going on in the 6K 420 H265 modes, looks less organic. I don't understand. On the S1 you can't oversample when shooting in S35 as there is only 4k to work with. You need additional resolution to oversample. Same situation with the C70, if its using a 2k crop in S16 mode there is nothing to oversample from. It could oversample 4k to 2k if it was 2k S35. It should have the same issue unless there is something that is really flying over my head.1 point -

So you think people in Africa, India, China, etc. are buying the hell out of 4k tv's??? You do realize the west represents about 15% of the whole world population. And how many of them have a 4k TV? I don't. A 4k TV is about the last thing in hell I am looking to buy. Speaking of buying, instead of buying a 4k TV I just bought a Canon 1Dc. Get it in a few days, has 2000 actuations. WAY better toy than a TV. This is the breakdown. https://www.statista.com/statistics/237584/distribution-of-the-world-population-by-continent/1 point -

Mark Romero 2 reacted to herein2020 for a topic
I think the way the S1 crops in explains why there is more noise.....the photosite to resolution ratio does change in the scenario you described. In FF mode it is using an oversampled 6K image and the full sensor to produce a 4K image so there are 6K worth of photosites being used to produce the smaller image which means the noise will be less than when you crop in where you are using less of the sensor but still creating a 4K image. In that scenario yes, I can definitely see where noise would increase. I wouldn't be surprised if the oversampling is turned off completely and only the S35 (8MP) worth of photosites is used. On the C70 it would be a different story because the photosite to resolution ration stays the same; in S35 mode the full 8MP sensor is being used and a 4K image is produced; in S16 mode the crop exactly matches 2K so a 2K image is produced. Now if the S16 mode let you record in 4K that's where the noise would increase because now the photosite to resolution ratio changed. Of course I could be completely wrong and the noise could still increase noticeably in the C70 in crop mode, but on paper at least it seems like it should remain constant when looking at the fact the photosite to resolution ratio does not change. The following video was a pretty interesting test of the S1 from a crop mode to noise relationship. That is a pretty fascinating analysis. Of course I was already aware of how important getting the exposure as perfect as possible in camera is, but their explanation of other sources of noise and the randomness of light itself definitely sheds more light on the issue. Maybe the oversampling process itself adds noise to the image. I think it all goes full circle...the only real way to know if the C70 specifically has more noise in S16 mode is to test it. At the moment I still think it is a 50:50 chance. Another question is....is there any camera out there that doesn't have increased noise in crop mode?1 point -

The PK4 to me is just too awkward of a camera body. And with a cage even more goofy. I get that 4k is never going to look like 1080p. It has it's uses. Even Arri doesn't really like a 4k camera. I doubt 4% of the world has a 4k TV let alone 8k. I don't, heck one of my 42" is 720p. Yeah, my 50" 1080p looks a Lot better. My 4k Monitor looks even better but...1 point -

From the official spec it was always clear that 8K 50/60 works with internal battery only without AF and IS, with external power AF IS works as normal including EF lenses. If I recall correctly that Gordon got it working on internal battery 8k 50p (not 60) with AF and IS but it was a pre release camera. This could even be lens dependent as I can imagine that you need less power for a 35 1.8 IS than for a 400 2.8 IS lens or could be that the final firmware simply does not allow it anymore as it may not be reliable.1 point -

There is no way in hell you are ever going to get the PK4 to look like the OG BMPCC looks like using Raw DNG. Blackmagic has lost it's magic since the PK4 came out. They looking nothing like the old stuff did. They look like everyone else now.1 point -

Plus it lost the filmic Mojo look of the OG. It looks better than a lot of cameras but it is not better.1 point -
Battery life is similar if you use current battery tech - I have personally recorded 49 minutes of uncompressed RAW from a single battery on the OG BMPCC. Depending on which SNR figure you look at, the P4K has either 0.4 or 0.2 extra stops of DR. Plus the P4K is almost 3x the size of the OG. Definitely sounds like a decade well spent...... *cough* *cough* *cough*1 point

Depressing Academy Awards' yesterday, not only for the winners (Spielberg and Kenneth Branagh being beaten by Jane Campion is a joke) but above all, people act like nothing is going on in the East. Let alone the egocentric/selfish and poor overacting little performance carried out by someone (Will Smith) who, despite his craft, still doesn't understand what to be an actor means or yet to be a man either. Coppola, Al Pacino e De Niro saved them all with the only mention to Ukraine suffering made all over the show...1 point

Happy pre birthday wishes then... Even in 9 to 5 jobs there are those that are married to it. Whether your a boss, employee or self employed i think contentment or a balance is the key. I liked my last job, then covid hit and i probably did two weeks work in two years. In that time my dad got ill, became pretty frail has alzeimhers. So now the government pays me a pension to take care of my father which includes showering and wiping his ass once a day. Let me just say any job where you dont have to wipe someone's ass is a good job lol. I only do it as he's looked after me his whole life, now its time i repaid the favour. Still i feel blessed, fortunate, lucky, i own my property, i live in a country with a pretty good health care system and there are no doubt people much worse off than me.1 point

I will be 75 years old in a few days. I could have a son your age. I have a daughter close to your age. It was not about the money it was family time, that you will regret. If you have a 9 to 5 job you like that's not a problem.1 point -
Well I don’t know your age and I’m 51 myself which even to me sounds ‘old’ on paper, but I don’t feel any older than maybe 35? I’m not talking about the, “who are you kidding mate?!” scenario but most folks I meet at weddings think I’m just over 40…but the reality is I was started shooting weddings when most of my clients were at kindergarten. I also have plenty of industry mates well into their 60’s and still holding their own in this industry. I’m not planning on going past 60 myself. I just reckon that the 30 year point will be a good time to call it quits. In the meantime, I’m not even slightly bothered about the cheaper guys. They have always existed and some even make it, but I just do my own thing and for 22 years that has worked for me. What does my closest competitor charge? Don’t know, don’t care. Who is my closest competitor? Don’t know, don’t care…but it’s not the guy charging less than 50% that I do know. I think it’s relatable across most industries and for YouTubers etc ie, it’s a constantly evolving situation and you do what works for you. There’s parts of my job I don’t much care for but compared with a 9-5, 48 weeks per annum, with a commute each day? Not many options out there I’d swap my situation for.1 point

Yeah, I keep saying this but no-one wants to hear it. We had the OG BMPCC that shot RAW internal, had 13-stops of DR, and was under $1000, a decade ago. What we have now - lots of cameras that barely improve upon this spec, except in resolution. At the time there was the OG BMPCC (the camera we had and could afford) and the Alexa (the image we all wanted). The Alexa had barely more pixels but staggeringly better quality pixels. What did the manufacturers do? Basically zero improvement in pixel quality, but now we have 16 times as many of them. *eyeroll* BUT.... say that around here and the "progress is progress" people just shout you down. Andrew was right about us getting what we deserve.... and what we got was manufacturers that just bamboozled people with BS and then everyone swallowed it. Even with Yedlin proving that no-one could even see more than 1080p in most situations.1 point
