    Sigma FP

I've been experimenting with the Sigma FP as a quasi mini replacement for an 1st generation URSA Mini 4.6K shooting DNG. My URSA has been declining in health with buttons not responding and the screen failing after 6 years. With the URSA Mini 4.6K I have an ingrained workflow with it's Gen 3 color science and the BMD Color Space and BMD Gamma. The primary colors are accurate or at least what I've come to rely on. Then with Sigma FP I transform the DNGs via the CST tool in Resolve from 'P3 D60' and 'Linear' to 'RedWideGamutRGB' and 'RED Log3G10' then transforming to REC709. This gives me the feel of the Lift - Gamma - Gain tools that I like to use to render the color, contrast and saturation. Just in a few available light table top tests I was surprised at how well both files matched in color rendition. I had seen some tests where the reds had shifted too orange on the Sigma FP (especially recording in BRAW and ProRes RAW) with identical ISO, white balance settings. They do shift in my example but neither is perfect out of the box. I attached two log like files below. Sigma FP ISO 800 WB 5194 TINT 13.79 URSA Mini 4.6K ISO 800 WB 5194 TINT 13.79

I think there is a lot of misuse of the camera. Dynamic range seems impressive when exposed to protect highlights. It would be nice of course if they had included a nice log curve. I am going to buy one within the next month.

    Panasonic GH6

It was V-Log. This person did another film with the GH6 which looks just as bad, oversharpened with a horrible highlight roll-off, colors etc. Don't know where to start even, but perfect to promote other manufacturer's cameras instead. But "cinematic" since the title says so I guess... Not the camera's fault either, I have a GH6 myself and it has a fantastic video image with a super smooth roll-off with DR Boost On and no sharpening and almost no NR in ProRes.

  5. just checked out this 8k raw footage: around 0:46 there is some false colour/moire on the balconies, centre of shot. I dunno. so much to love about this cam but eek If i'd paid $11K for a camera to find that I'd be grimacing

  6. In my experience; any classic film that has been properly restored and transferred to 4K will look absolutely amazing in comparison to any copy you have seen in the past. This is especially true for black & white films. Recent examples like The Godfather and Citizen Kane are well worth it. In contrast, recent films, especially those captured digitally, you probably won't see much of a difference between the 1080p and UHD versions.

I have exactly the setup you're talking about, and absolutely love it. It's so light weight and the footage is fantastic. I will say though, monitor on for external raw is well worth doing. Braw works pretty well in Premiere now, and you have the added benefit of changing the angle of the screen. I have my monitor mounted on the back, so to the person being filmed, it doesn't look much bigger or more intimidating than the actual camera without the monitor. Here's a couple images with a 28mm FD lens (also a very nice combo)

  8. Also, this idea seems personal, so I wouldn't recommend taking too many ideas from others this early on. Only you know the story you want to tell. The beginning and the ending are the two most important parts of any screenplay. They feed off one another. You should know your ending before you even start writing page one.

  9. I have a mate who has been doubly unlucky with drones. 1. First he had a Phantom which true to their name occasionally had batteries whose capacity would suddenly go from 40% to 10% in a few seconds. Tried to get it back over water but it sunk 20m from dry land. 2. The second time is immortalized in this video, The chances of 2 drones colliding in 3D space seem pretty slim to me but it happened in Myanmar. What happened next can only be described as 'lucky'.
