    Canon EOS R5C

So I got a R5c for a week to test to decide if to switch one of my R5 to a R5c. After the first two days these are my observations in comparison to the R5, that are hard to get from the youtube reviewer madness. The good: 8K 60 RAW is the same quality as 8K 30. Btw in Resolve on my gaming notebook I can playback on a 4k 60 timeline with no issue with some basic color grading. I was expecting worse 4k 60 is great and better than R5 4k 60 logically S35 6K RAW is also very good 4k 120 it seems also a tad better than the R5 but I need more test here to confirm XAVC is a way better format to edit than h265 so the fact that you can do 4k up to 120 fps 10bit Clog3 in XAVC is great The Cinema menu system is much more logical and better organized. Waveform! False Color and Magnifying all during recording. All the right info on the recoding display, the R5 is a bit of mess while recording video. You can decide what you show where for almost anything LCD vs VF vs HDMI You can really decide what you want to record on the second card in parallel, the R5 is ok but fairly restricted More DR, is it 1.5 stop more than R5 as Gerald claims I cannot judge but is definitely better than the R5 No limits, no overheating Still very small body With long lens with IS I really don’t miss IBIS, I see no difference vs R5 (70-200 and 100-500), non IS lens is a no go compared to the R5 logically. Face Only AF is really good for filming person as it will not focus on the bg and back to the face if it looses the face. R5 does not have this mode. AF at the maximum speed settings is on pair with the R5 it seems but I need more test to confirm Media playback has waveform and vector scope, R5 has nothing 2TB delikin cards are fast enough for 8K RAW LT 60 fps I can work with but it could be better: Switching from Photo to Video is slow but not as terrible as I thought, disabling in both Photo and Video the sensor cleaning make it somewhat usable Maximum shutter speed is 1/2000….. I sometime use the camera in 8K RAW as remote camera for pictures and I need more that 1/2000….R5 is 1/4000 Why is like this I have no idea,? The media playback part is not that great, no magnification on playback (same as R5), UI not great, no slow motion playback speed (R5 has it), need a lot of button press to delete videos, you cannot scroll through videos with the wheel, although on the plus side it plays back one after the other (R5 cannot do this). Would be super useful that you could cut RAW video files in the media playback (R5 cannot do neither) No audio controls for the onboard mic. R5 has it. The body is wider so balancing on a Ronin S with the nd adapter and EF 24-70 2.8 is not ideal as the VF bumps on the motor…. with some weights or having the motor work more is fixable. With EF lens no auto Iris but the R5 can do it. Prerecording does not work in RAW The bad: Battery is really miserable and if you record or not it consumes basically the same, the problem that when the menus are displayed the camera still capture video at the frame rate that you set….. the only way that it seems to stop chewing battery is to call the media playback menu, so this is the only trick that seems to work to save battery instead of turning it off. Using PD power banks solve the issue but the USB-C is bound to break and is on the main board. Using a Dummy battery coupler with a V-Mount battery currently is not a good solution because all the dummy ones regulate at 7.2v not enough for 60fps! The only one that serves 9v is the canon one Canon DR-E6C DC Coupler for EOS R5 C 5664C001 B&H Photo Video (bhphotovideo.com) that is overpriced and a piece of junk as you need another adapter for the D-Tap Anton Bauer P-Tap to Canon 9V Barrel Cable (20") 8075-0271 B&H (bhphotovideo.com). Really a bad solution. It desperately needs a third party dummy battery that regulates at 9v similar to this Kondor Blue D-Tap to Canon LP-E6 Dummy Battery KB-DTAP-CLPE6 B&H (bhphotovideo.com) Or the real better solution a battery grip with 1Dx,R3 battery……. If I keep it my plan is to buy a FXLION Nano One and use the USB PD port until somebody sells a 9v D-Tap dummy battery and then simply switch the cable. AF is way less features rich than the R5: no animal, vehicle, helmet tracking. No various AF sizes only whole, large and small. AF > 60fps is limited to Continuous AF, so no face tracking and no object tracking. This is the second biggest issue other than the battery I could not find a way to store and recall settings like C1, C2, C3 on the R5…… so changing from 8K RAW 24p to 4k 120fps XAVC you need to touch multiple menu items. This should really be added. Onboard WiFi is not working in Video mode. Canon should enable the video feature in photo mode like in the R5 so if you need more rich AF and better battery is there. Second they should optimize the battery management while not recording and add more features to the AF. The HW is capable so why not? Third they should sell a D-Tap 9v dummy battery and a R3 battery grip too. Forth they should remake the media playback part, with zoom, minimum video editing and better usability I love the cinema OS for video but they really need to fix the battery and add AF feature then it would be the best camera. I’m even happy if they just re-enable video on the photo mode. More tests in the next days.

  3. Yeah, that’s what I did. Was a small player in a silly bar band as a hobby outside of the gigs. It was nice. I knew punching a clock 9-5 wasn’t going to be a future I’d be comfortable with, so I walked away from that in my twenties and went freelance. Feast or famine ain’t for everybody with employment, but as a single guy with always a little bit of savings it wasn’t too hard to manage. Also, I had some exciting clients that really enriched my life… the places on this planet I’ve been is kind of bananas. No regrets in that regard. At this point I’m an old dog and the new tricks of modern media creation are simply mediocre expectations rather than the “gee-wiz that’s cool” impressions that I could deliver in the past. Sure is interesting to see an entire profession move beyond one’s capabilities.

  5. From the videos I've watched they unfortunately don't work well in video mode when it comes to AF. They work great for photos, but the results in video reminded me of trying to use AF with a speedbooster on my GH5. I was going to get the Sigma 28-70 but the results I saw were bad; I thought about renting it to see for myself but it feels like it'd be a waste of $90 or whatever dollars. Right now I'm using the kit lens and is quite a gem to be honest. I am looking at the Panny 24-105mm though, as F4 is more than enough for my sports and event work. Related: I really, really like the S5. I can't believe I got a lightly used one with a cage, 2 OEM batteries, and the kit lens for $1400. I highly recommend getting it, especially if you can find a deal. The image is so good.

  6. Was so annoying having to add on the EVF to make a menu change, or even just to simply check the timecode! As often the build wouldn't have an EVF, such as if on a crane or on a gimbal. Hated the placement of the timecode input too on the Mini! Right there at the back, so awkward. Now they've got a battery plate there isn't, as it should be. The ACs didn't like it either, as was tricky for them to get media in and out of the Mini. Wow. What a world we live in! Even ARRI is loaning out their new camera release to YouTubers, harnessing the power of social media promotion. You expect this from Sony and Canon, but not ARRI. Shows the importance of social media marketing now at all levels!

  7. Not just Panasonic doing open gate now for mirrorless! The newly announced Fujfilm X-H2S has open gate, I'll be better more Fujifilm cameras such as the X-T5 will get open gate as well.

  8. Sigma are certainly holding up their end of the bargain for the L mount alliance in creating a great set of compact size/price lens options. At €899 it is about 65% of the price of the slightly longer reaching Panasonic's 16-35mm but at f2.8 versus f4 of the Panasonic it is also a fair bit faster.

    Fuji X-H2S

X-H2S is a speed centric camera, it's the very first stacked APS-C sensor and also the fastest, which benefits both stills (action, sport, wild life etc.) and video.

  10. Socialise? Nah, I’m that guy could live on a desert island quite happily. Which in a way is a bit weird being a ‘social’ photographer… If the black sheep and the lone wolf had a child, that would be me. I do have friends. Well one anyway. He’s not in the industry but has the same outlook as me.

  11. The source is a camera company called Leica and the camera division of a company called Panasonic. They are quite well known. They stood on a stage together, recorded a piece (which I am sure they were reading off a flip chart) and put it out on their respective YouTube channels.

No less vague but still official. https://leica-camera.com/en-int/news/leica-camera-ag-and-panasonic-signed-strategic-comprehensive-collaboration-agreement?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=proactive_(publishing)&utm_medium=social&linkId=100000128059709 Meanwhile, the junior partner just concentrates on getting on with releasing tangible assets for the current alliance.

  14. I'm guessing you have found people that you can socialise with during the week? I sometimes have breaks between contracts and found that basically everyone I knew was busy working Monday to Friday before 6pm, and were tired after that. I always suspected there was a parallel world of people who worked evenings and nights and weekends and they all just hung out with each other while the business-hours folks were all at work..

  15. I saw that link, but (and I know this might make me sound a little crazy here....) I didn't think that manufacturers announced alliances by wearing t-shirts and posts on rumour sites. Yeah, I know, crazy talk. I guess if @MrSMW says "Panasonic and Leica made a joint announcement that they are 'furthering' their collaboration." then it must be true - regardless of the source!

  16. Exactly, and you also lose any slow motion with the ninja star. But with the correct settings the camera can send a 6k>1080p oversampled image, instead of the stock pixel binned 1080p readout. So the 1080p is nice and detailed, like a C100. I shoot in this mode so often, it’s perfect especially for online use. Even looks good on a 4k monitor. So I don’t think the lack of 4k is a huge issue. The difference is there, but since the 1080 is oversampled, it’s only a small difference. Now why does this setup work for me? I always deliver to 1080p, I’m not one to fuss over detail, and this 1080p mode already has very nice detail. I rarely use slow motion as well, so the ninja star “solved” my problem with the camera. The problem was the heavy weight with the Ninja V, along with the poor battery life. Ninja Star is light and lasts forever off a small NPF550 battery. Ninja V needs multiple larger NPF750 batteries to have good battery life, and so the weight really adds up. I think a big reason many say 4k looks so much better than 1080 is because most cameras just don’t do a good job actually resolving 1080p. Most cameras just line skip or pixel bin in the 1080 mode, so you aren’t getting true 1080p. Recording Oversampled 1080 directly is a severely underrated workflow in my opinion.

  18. ALEXA LF and the Mini LF can use the new Reveal Color Science as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see eventually see a LF mk2 based on this new sensor, but I am however doubtful that will be any time soon. Could easily be five plus years away. They'll probably put out a "35 Mini" (Micro?) before that, or a headless version like the ALEXA M (or Sony's Rialto system) for ultra tightly compact shooting. Maybe a live broadcast version as well?

  24. I think putting the handles and matte box is as far as I'm going to go when it comes to trying to spiffy the camera up for clients. I'll add a monitor for functionality when I need it. To me, I want a compact, simple set up. I see "rig build" videos on YouTube and 90% of them are just way too much for me. 5 years ago I'd of had a totally different opinion, because I'd have been impressed and slightly jealous, but honestly the last thing I wanna do these days is spend more than 5 minutes setting up my camera rig and then have to lug this big thing around for a simple sit down talking head shoot or my friend blowing glass. LUMIX S5 + cage + Panasonic XLR helmet + Azden SGM-250CX + SmallRig HSR2511 right grip with record trigger + NiceyRig left grip with Arri Rosette + Mini Matte Box Lite = enough!

    Fuji X-H2S

I will never understand why more companies haven't done more power zooms. That lens sounds like a killer, even if it is a little bit on the slow side. Well worth it for a versatile lens that can do all of that. I kind of agree, but also kinda just wish they'd build a fan straight into the camera. I get why they didn't, and I get that for MOST uses it will not be required, but it's just hard to get behind the idea of having to buy an external fan accessory to help with overheating. They are getting SO CLOSE, but I agree. There are just enough quirks still that make it hard to jump into the Fuji system. The big thing for me is they need updated lenses that can handle changes in exposure better. This new lens is definitely incredible, but what they've got out there right now aren't too good in this regard. That's a dealbreaker for me. The IBIS also doesn't look very good at all in video and seems more geared towards stills. My sports work needs good stabilization, because the cameras are so lightweight and small (+1 for the old heavy camcorders of yesteryear not needing stabilization because of how big and heavy they were!) I love those Fuji colors so much though! I look forward to trying it anyway!

I agree, the Fujinon XF 18-120mm F4 LM PZ WR Parfocal Hybrid Lens is more exciting! First ever collaboration too between the two branches of Fujinon vs Fujifilm.

Yes! If the descriptions turn out true in September, I’m getting the lens this fall. “…minimal focus breathing, stepless aperture control, and constant F4 aperture. Pull focus, make precise adjustments to iris, or change focal length without causing any noticeable distractions to the recorded footage.” All depends on what is “noticeable” to you. But no doubt will be a huge improvement over the present exposure-stepping zooms. Twice the zoom range and 1/3rd the cost of the Fuji cinema zooms, with auto focus. https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/products/lenses/xf18-120mmf4-lm-pz-wr/ Works with X-T3. X-T4, X-S10 with firmware coming in Sept. “…the first lens to be designed in ‘collaboration between FUJINON Optics and FUJIFILM X Series engineers” https://www.dpreview.com/news/3492623346/fujifilm-xf-18-120mm-f4-lm-pz-wr-lens-is-parfocal-weather-sealed-and-will-cost-just-899

  29. Well it’s 2022 now, and seems like I’m the only person using this camera for video. Everyone likes to use a Sony a7sIII or a Canon R5C. The Z6 provides an interesting feature set for those who cannot afford a more expensive option. At an affordable price it has what I call the “triple Goldilocks” featureset. That is, this camera is full frame, has 10 bit 4k, and has very respectable phase-detect autofocus. This camera desperately needs an external recorder. Without one the camera seems pointless for video. You lose both 10 bit and log, a big smack in the face. The internal files lack dynamic range. I’ve gotten decent results with the neutral picture profile and the contrast dialed down a tad, but lighting needs to be optimal. Highlight rolloff is terrible and I’d honestly prefer Sony A7iii 8 bit because we at least have somewhat useable log. However, if you do hook up an external recorder, you are in for a treat. You get full frame 10 bit 4k. You get a really nice log profile with solid DR, great highlight retention, and a gentle rolloff. You can pick up a Ninja V plus a used Z6 body for sub $2000. This puts you in similar territory to the S5, but you get better autofocus that I think is very useable with the right lenses. N-log grades quite well in post. It responds well to overexposure. For interview shots I put middle gray at 50 IRE instead of the recommended 35 IRE. For run and gun I just look at my scopes and make sure the image is overexposed by a good amount without clipping. For grading, Nikon’s 3D LUT is horrendous. It’s better than nothing, but it seems to ruin the solid highlight rolloff of N-log. You also get a purple tint thrown in for free. It is much better to use the color space transfer in Davinci Resolve. This gets you clean, accurate color. If you overexpose the shot, a great way to bring things back is to use Resolve’s HDR panel by setting it’s color space and gamma to rec2020/N-log. Then use the “global” slider to bring your exposure down. You don’t have to use any other HDR wheels, just adjust your exposure here. Then go back to your primaries in a new node, and grade as normal. Voila! There is a hidden feature of this camera. With an external recorder you can get beautiful over sampled 1080p. By default the 1080 is pixel binning trash. Looks like an EOS R. But set your record setting to 4k, and then in the HDMI settings select 1080p. Now it’s downsampling the full sensor readout further, to output a 1080 signal. This works with the Ninja V, giving you easier times in post and 1/4 file size. It also opens the option to use the lovely Atomos Ninja Star. I just bought that thing. Paired with the oversampled 1080 hack, this is a killer combo. You still get the full frame 10 bit log, good autofocus, and detailed image. But now you have a tiny external recorder that sips through battery and adds little weight to the camera. The camera feels more compact and is much lighter. For me I’m happy with a clean 1080p image, and slo mo is rare for my work. As such, this setup works well…if you can manage to find a ninja star. I could fit a whole day shooting onto a 256GB CFast card, no problem. I use the ninja star most often. When I need 4k or slow motion, I switch to the Ninja V. The camera landscape has changed since I got it. When I bought the camera, if I wanted the aforementioned features and internal 10 bit, I would have been forced to pick up the overheating Canon R6, which was out of my price range. I could have sacrificed autofocus and gotten the Panasonic S5. That camera is better in every way, except for the autofocus and it’s micro hdmi. The Z6 has a somewhat better mini HDMI. I could have also sacrificed sensor size to get a Fuji XT4. That honestly would have been a good option, I sometimes wish I went that route. Nowadays, if you can afford a Canon R6 or A7iv (and can get decent glass and lighting equipment so your stuff doesn’t look crappy) I would get it over the Z6. I’m not a fan of being tied to an external recorder, and the Ninja V adds too much weight for me. However, if you can’t seem to afford a R6 or an A7iv, and you want one of the best full frame images WITH GOOD AUTOFOCUS, a used Z6 and an external recorder is worth considering.
