Sony FX3 vs. Canon R6 for Video
webrunner5 and 2 others reacted to Gregormannschaft for a topic
I was looking for a B-cam to my C200, and didn't like any of the Canon offerings. In the end, I think the S5 footage beat out the C200 raw in a lot of circumstances and was definitely easier to work with in post (the C200 raw needs a lot of noise reduction and has huge file sizes). In terms of image, I think the S line cameras edge out the Sony and Canon cameras, but it's very close. To be honest, I've been thinking of switching to all Sony as I find myself wishing I had reliable AF on a lot of recent shoots. That's a very expensive switch though so I'm dragging my heels on actually following through. In the end, as others have said, all this gear talk is pretty useless. You can do pretty much anything with any modern camera. All you're really paying for with upgrading is improving your workflow and easing your shooting experience.3 points -

Absolutely. Camera discussions mostly ignore the broader workflow, which is a shame.2 points -
Guys, the thread has derailed into a wall-to-wall nonsense. If I wanted to be polemic, I should advise, those who think the patent is meaningless, to offer themselves to Nikon as consultants in the ongoing legal battle š Actually, if the patent has withstood for years several lawsuits filed (not by my mother) but by the likes of Apple & co., it means that it is evidently well written. Mind you, I am not agreeing with Red. This is a classic case where the current patent system demonstrates all its limitations and actually prevents technological progress to the detriment of users. At present, the only real question that makes sense to ask is: Is it possible that a company like Nikon went off the rails in this matter without taking into account the history of previous lawsuits (perhaps misguided? She tried?) or is Nikon in posses of information that we do not have?2 points

ARRI's brand new 4K S35 sensor is mere weeks away

The Alexa 35 should build up quite a bit smaller than the Mini for general shooting. The problem with the Mini is that it wasn't designed to be operated on the shoulder or even on sticks. It was a small body for Steadicam, Gimbal or Drone shots. Thus, to make it work, you needed to add a cage and battery plate but due to the design of the body, the battery plate is always quite far away from the back of the camera. The new Alexa 35 doesn't have this issue so should be a much better form factor despite the possible weight increase in batteries. Battery plate directly mounts to new Alexa 35 Alexa Mini solution: (Not so Mini any more)2 points -
Well, it's rather strange that he did a WB without having the LUTs / conversions in place, because there's no guarantee that whatever flavour of log it's shot in will be neutral, but in general yes, that's a better workflow. Waqas is one of the reliable colourists on YT, but he tends to overcomplicate things for views and to get people to buy his course. Still, the method in this video is reasonable. But you should be able to get great looking footage if you: know your camera and how to shoot and get the most from it (years of use) know how to grade it in the way that gives you the look you like most keep it simple2 points

adequate There isn't much reason to comment on the Alexa 35, other than to ogle over the image. This is because almost no one here will really be using it. If you are getting a Blackmagic Pocket 6k you are grasping for whatever you can get ahold of to make your barely adequate shoots work. That is my take at least. I have heard complaints about the Alexa 35 but it's from people who will actually be using it and it doesn't have to do with autofocus or IBIS as that doesn't really exist in that space. A lot of people buying cheaper cameras have to choose between that or something else and they want it all in one as most can't afford multiple systems.2 points

It's easy to clean that cable up with some clever cable management (unlike the photo). A good 1st AC will sort that out quick smart. Having a cable means it can be adjusted and placed anywhere on the camera quickly and easily. The current Alexa Mini is pretty easy to solo operate really. Such a great menu system and most of what you need is accesible by the buttons on the EVF/screen This may have been mentioned already but I genuinely am curious about the following..... Why isn't anyone here seriously complaining about the lack of IBIS, Auto focus or the fact that it isn't Full Frame? Is it because the camera is so far out of reach price wise that you just don't care? So, when other companies make cameras that are not too far away from this image wise such as Z-Cam, Blackmagic etc (I know the Alexa trumps them image wise, but I have used Pocket Cameras as B_Cams to Alexa Minis in the past without too much issue), do people complain that those camera don't have IBIS, AF and FF just because they are priced in reach of people who need those features without really realising who those cameras are aimed at? Is the Problem with other manufacturers the fact that they price their cameras too cheap? We seem willing to accept the lack of features in a $75,000 camera but when someone comes along and gives us 70% of that camera in a much cheaper package, we wine about it not having feature XY&Z. Not wanting to stir the pot, just genuinely interested as to how people think.2 points -

Aside from that, I would say that the GH5 2x mode in 1080p is more useful than the GH6 pixel-pixel because it is oversampled. And that the undersampled GH5 2x mode in 4k is less useful than the oversampled GH6 pixel-pixel.1 point -

SIGMA FP with ProRes RAW and BRAW !
OleB reacted to Llaasseerr for a topic
Yeah, I still won't understand this until I see it. Of course I'm operating under the assumption that the naked image might be V-log, but that might be wrong. Originally I thought the Ninja was showing the "OFF" image from the camera, but now I'm not so sure. So if you don't have the V-log LUT switched on (I assume you mean V-log to Rec709), then the log image, if it is in fact V-log, should show all highlight detail. But maybe the naked image directly into the recorder just is not being displayed as V-log at all and is just the "OFF" profile, meaning "flat-ish", and the display is still clipping the highlights somewhat. Then the PQ preview is the only solution that is readily available. For sure, it makes sense that for some cams that Atomos just decided on adding a default V-log tag to the metadata. Although Z cam does have its own log format so that's surprising. That sounds correct in that there should not be a decision forced on the user about a generalised way to interpret a raw file. The issue is that most people don't know how to handle the data, so they just start playing with the controls to bring the image in range. However the inspector does seem to offer a number of viable options as to how to transform the raw image to make it instantly usable for most people. The basic thing you have to do with raw data is apply a log transform and then apply a log-to-display transform. Right, that's what I meant when I said exposure, but it may be more accurate to say ISO or gain. That's not inherent in the PRR file format. Really, we are just talking about choices by Atomos and Sigma as to how much gain to add or not add to an ISO invariant image and there seems to be some difference here for internal DNG vs external PRR. Tbh in this case, neither is ideal. Yes ISO 800 internally is just ISO 100 with +3 stops of gain. Then the Ninja V is doing something as well that is more ISO invariant. But if the underlying ISO is known when you account for the weird "interpretations" and the image is exposed correctly, then at least at a glance the image is pretty much the same. With the caveat of factors like shadow noise levels and highlight clipping point. Yes the fp is baking the gain transform in as opposed to an EI approach, which is more what the Ninja is doing. If you look at cameras that shoot with an exposure index mode (EI) like a Sony cine cam, they are just shooting at the base ISO and are not baking in the extra gain, and the exposure difference is just metadata. So that does make more sense professionally. What is idiosyncratic is that just shooting at the base ISO 100 internally and cranking by +3 stops is not as good as shooting at ISO 800 when accounting for noise floor and highlight clipping point. There is some internal processing beyond just a +3 stop gain increase. So I think I can understand why Atomos decided to start at ISO 800 instead. I can't remember my findings from 1600+, except that they have diminishing returns with the exception of a slight noise floor advantage for 3200 in some situations because it's the higher base ISO.1 point -

I think the difficult part with ALEXAs is just all the factors adding up, by itself any one isn't a deal breaker though. But they are: No easy access to quick audio changes. (not true for the AMIRA) No built in ND filters. (not true for the Mini cameras and AMIRA) The heavy weight, which in turns makes all the support equipment heavier too! (Although the Mini cameras are again of course smaller, and the AMIRA is somewhat slightly slimmer than the full size ALEXAs by a tad) Needing a human chain of batteries supplied to it to keep it on and running (I exaggerate a little! ha, but yeah, the battery demands are quite a bit heavier than anything you'd be used to). No info/controls on the operator side (except for the AMIRA). So the ALEXA 35 with the Sonosax module mostly addresses all of those points, except for the battery demands which has got heavier than ever.1 point

For better or worse that's what a patent is supposed to do, prevent others from selling what you've patented.1 point

50hz vs 60hz defines the ecosystem that the device is compatible with. "24fps or more", is intentionally mentioned there to prevent still camera makers, who were already using raw compression for still images, to make Cine cameras that shoot raw internally. If a judge doesn't understand this doesn't mean its not clear.1 point

I think so. You can throw a battery and lens on and be ready to shoot. You have easy audio options too. Honestly the OG mini is not hard to solo operate but not having easy on board audio options sucks. The bad thing about the mini is it sucks for bigger productions as there is no side panel for the AC.1 point

RAW Video on a Smartphone
Juank reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I gave it a try the other day. It works, very good sensor in it. There's also the Xiaomi Mi 10 which will give you 6K/24p RAW due to faster processor so maybe worth paying $300 for one of those on eBay instead. Redmi Note 11 is a bit more responsive than the Note 10 and same price. That's got a much smaller sensor though, but it seems to work well. Be careful of some of the budget handsets like Oppo Reno6 5G Stellar. It's got a lovely camera and 4.6K RAW but I couldn't get more than 16fps out of it in the app. Be aware that all the Xiaomi devices have slow USB C ports (2.0 speed crippled shit) so off loading the RAW will be slower than wifi and you can't use external SSDs for recording, so watch the internal memory size... 64GB not going to cut it.1 point -

GH2 certainly had character. Distinctive colour science. With the GH3 they switched to a Sony sensor for first time. GH4 they modernised the image processor quite a bit for 4K. GH5 I think has really nice colour science especially in 10bit but it is way more modern and clean. GH6 is more of the same I think, whereas the OM-1 has more character. It's not just the sensor or colour profiles, or LOG and which LUT, but how the white balance is baked in as well. Sometimes a bit of weirdness is good for character. I tell myself that when looking in a mirror too!1 point -
