  1. don't really know if it's really worth posting this, but i dp'd a little short by a friend with this camera. it's a coming of age film about an immigrant high schooler kind of finding his place in punk music culture. to be quite honest i'm not quite happy with most of the shots we've gotten, but i've decided to post stills of ones i like the most. maybe some of you will like the images. all done with the meike mft set if that's of any interest. i still think this camera rocks, even if it has quite a few shortcomings.

    Fuji X-H2S

I don't want to highjack this thread, but this link shows a few pictures of the ability of the Sony Smartphone. The reason I bought it, and as you know I have had a Lot of cameras over the years. It is a great camera. Nothing you are going to stick in your pocket is going to beat it. Not shot by me.

    SLog vs Clog c

If you are good you can make a Barbie Cam look good, it has very little to do with the camera. Quit making excuses and get it done. You can make a full length movie with a R6.

    SLog vs Clog c

Hyperbolin poop until it looks all the same, like poop.:) Anyway, I would love us to post more lil vignettes instead of searching significance in youtubepoop. @SRV1981 I find CLog3 very easy to grade and Canon 10bit cameras are capable of great images. I find some A7S I and II very challenging to grade under unlit circumstances. Regardless their high light sensitivity they don´t provide nice colours easily, especially not in the LOG formats, coming from my experience. I once had a gig they gave me an A7SII for. I recorded Rec709, 400 ISO and codec still didnt hold up grading very well. I imagine Canon R6 being a pretty cool camera. Cannot go wrong with a FX3 neither. Or with Lumix S5, if you want a "full frame" camera. So with your Canon R6 you are settled perfectly for some great colours. The little differences only matter when you are used to one of the profiles and plan on shooting with the other. When I rent a C300 II, I always film in CLOG3 and always do a black balance before shooting. Clog 3 is better in lowlight than 2 and easier to grade for me. Slog from the A7 III on is pretty good. Tiny difference only matter when doing high end commercials or films. Other than that all 10bit cameras put out a neat image. What´s more important under that buch of rather higher priced cameras is usuablitity, battery life and sturdiness. SLOG flavours on FS700, PMW F3,5,55,65:), FX6,9, FS5,7 is very different from the early photocams and a good format to record in, even in its 8bit alterations in the FS700 and F3. But with your R6 you have a great camera to enjoy, when it comes down to a nice image. cheers

  5. Absolutely. 100 years of cinema mainly filmed at 24fps means that people in general consider the result to be the most realistic depiction of motion. I would expect, if the entire industry switched to 60fps tomorrow then in another 100 years that would be considered the most realistic. Given the prevalence of video games that might well happen.

  7. Yet another example of the importance of the new sensor... https://ymcinema.com/2022/06/13/the-cameras-behind-cannes-2022-alexa-mini-still-dominates/ As lots of Alexa 35s get bought and the previous models become more affordable, it will only make getting into the top tier of images that much easier.

    Music you love...

true, pure soul. no ads music. no elevator buy stuff melodies. true grit from within. Lee Moses is an enigma. He just vanished after this record. This song is one of the most powerful recordings I had listened to a few years ago when I discovered it through the film "House of tolerance", which I had a very hard time trying to watch it, because it is a very saddening and deep film. Anyway, this song elevated the quality of this film even moreso. "I´m sad about it" by Lee Moses is another breathtaking song.

  11. Panasonic G6! Beautiful 28mb AVCHD (actually very underrated organic image. Reminds me of a C100)

  12. Have investigated this further. Look what I have found in regards to the fp behavior in RAW on the Atomos. Monitoring of RAW input in: - Native – Linear to VLog for use with 3D LUTs – can use any existing VLog LOOK LUTs - Rec709 – to view RAW input in SDR up to 6.7 stops of dynamic range - HLG – to view RAW in HLG with up 10.5 stops of dynamic range - PQ – to view RAW in PQ/HDR10 with up to 10.5 stops of dynamic range, for scenes with extended spectral highlights. Am about 99% sure that the camera is showing Vlog when switched to native. As far as I understand from the Vlog white paper 90% reflection is located at about 60 IRE, on ISO 100 the fp clips at about 62 IRE. The higher you go with the ISO (up to ISO 800). The more headroom on top is available. That seems to match the design of Vlog. Panasonic itself writes that Vlog was build to capture the DR of the Varicam, cameras like the GH5 can use the same Vlog but will clip below 100 IRE because of the less DR available. That means you can use the cameras in one shoot and mix them with the same Vlog look. Have also read that Blackmagic took another approach and always create a log for each camera to use the best DR available. So yes, it seems that you can get a quite good match with the Vlog and the official Panasonic Vlog Rec709 as LUT on the monitor. However I am not too sure if this is at least for me a good way of working since I do not know if the next step would be now to figure out the native ISO of the camera for maximum DR in Vlog? S1 or S5 seem to have dual ISO as well with possibly the same sensor, but min ISO would be 640...Cannot imagine that with the fp you can set it to ISO 100 and get good results with Vlog? Or am I getting something wrong now? For now I prefer the manual colorspace matching in FCPX directly from the untouched linear RAW, which gives me great results. And with the PQ view in the monitor I can get a really good idea on how the picture will look like.

  14. Sony A7S original. Oversampled 1080, high DR. Kinda neat image for the price if you can live with tricky 8 bit

Yep you have got to do more than just apply a rec709 conversion. Believe me I’m learning this right now with Nikon N-Log. We keep telling you it’s experience you (and myself lol) need. Please, please stop complaining over your Canon R6, which I am jealous of over my Nikon Z6 due to its internal 10 bit. So in my eyes your camera is already better, and I think the Z6 10 bit is beautiful. All bad results I get are totally my fault, be it the way I light or grade. You are just avoiding what will actually make you better.

    SLog vs Clog c

CLOG 3 has more contrast. There is also a cutoff in the shadows making it appear cleaner but also giving you less information in the shadows. There is also probably a bit less highlight retention. It's good if you want to just add a bit of contrast and saturation and call it a day. CLOG2 is a more conventional log where the full dynamic range of the sensor is maintained.

    SLog vs Clog c

If you're using Resolve, you can convert from one to the other, so essentially zero difference. In practical terms, both will be rubbish until you learn to colour grade.

    Nokia PureView 808

Love the colours you achieved with your Nokia. @webrunner5 The highlight area is GH2 style though, consequent in its realizaton into super white and dynamic and fast in doing so. 🙂

    Panasonic GH6

As mentioned, my opinion is that the Panasonic lut is slightly too dark. Aside from this the issue of "perfect" exposure is complex. None of it matters if you can get the results that you're looking for. It's normal to brighten or darken clips in post. I'd imagine that the only people who are trying to get extremely accurate exposures in-camera are those shooting slide film.

  25. 24 frames a second was determined back in the 1920's maybe even teens as the slowest you could hand crank a film movie camera and make it not look jerky, any faster you were eating up too much film. It was all about the money, just like everything is now.

  26. FYI, the entire set of "vignettes" from which the "trailer" was developed (this film was actually an extended clothing commercial, believe it or not) are available here: https://vimeo.com/user19303281 They're worth watching. The score is really lovely as well; they had a top-notch crew for every aspect of this project.

  28. As years go by, I seriously seem to love this camera even more. I've worked with plenty of cameras over the years, like many Gh5, A7iii, Bmpcc 6k, Ursa Mini, Eos R, etc and despite it's difficulties, at the end of the day, I always come back to it. The quality of the images, and the ease of use - in terms of editing - in Prores 422 (as I prefer to use it), is just magical. Newer entries like GH6, make me curious, but I still believe the BMMCC can easily be an a cam for narrative work. And this topic makes me realize it even more.

  29. After reading that the minolta mc 28mm 3.5 lens is a secret keeper that's often overlooked due to its speed, I was really pleased by it's sharpness and look after some lens tests. Payed 30 bucks for it. Which is still a normal price today. When shooting a short film in Norway, I wanted to challenge myself with just one lens. I went with the 28mm 3.5 on my pocket 4k since that would be about 35mm in super 35, which scorsese for example loves and other filmmakers have sticked to during longer periods of a film. I find the 28mm 3.5 a tiny bit sharper than the minolta 28mm 2.8's I have tested. Well here is the result and I am quite happy with some of the images.
