Check out the S1H rear LCD and be less confused. It can do all of that and tilt up or down without having to stick out of the side, but you can stick it out the side, rotate it endlessly through 360 degrees etc. It is hands down the best design out there as it ticks all boxes.3 points -

Ah I see, that must be pretty fun when going around in these nice places haha (non ho capito se qui si può scrivere in Italiano o no ma per non rischiare ti rispondo in Inglese) This is the trailer of my first feature movie (mockumentary/comedy/drama) that I finished last month, not high budget and completely indie, I was the director but also the dop and camera operator + everything else techincal, then 2 writers (one of them is also the main actor) and another guy who composed the entire score for the feature. It was really fun to make, it's an hour long. Me and the two writers are currently aiming for some festivals (but it seems very hard to choose which) and also looking for some ways to show it around, we did 2 "closed doors" projections in local cinemas and we have one more on the 9th of this month! It was entirely shot on the Lumix S1.3 points -

XC10 was a brilliant design, I was expecting an evolution of that design to be the must have run and gun camera of our age (something the C100 was). Ofcourse C70 is that good, but a little bit weirder, I guess! And a bit more expensive than most of us would like.2 points -

Yes, I am big on the Olympus 15mm F8 pancake lens. The price is right and like you did you can just stick it in your pocket and not really even notice it. And as you stated it is pretty good output wise if you have enough light. The DOF is pretty good also. 😃2 points -
Seems like a useful product.

Not sure where to put this but this does seem to fill a need for all the damn stuff you have to carry with you all in one place. Doesn't solve every scenario but it would help.2 points -
According to one article it said that Hitchcock preferred 50mm, which on S35 would be ~80mm FF. The 15mm on the GX85 in 4K mode is about a 2.2x crop factor, so around 33mm equivalent. Maybe it's the contrast or the colour perhaps?2 points

I posted this before, but here is some Lumix G6 footage I filmed, lit and "directed". Mighty Canon FD 28mm 2.8, nFD flavour, shot wide open. Such a kewl tiny and great looking lens, which you mights still be able to get for 20 to 40 EUR.2 points -
Love the compositions of 3 to 5. Placing actors in them would turn these into a frame of a cinema classic. Though not shot with one of Hitchcocks focal lengths, as far as i figure, it has a Hitchcockian feel to it. @kye2 points

That looked really good. Then I see, shot of GF3. Wow! @kye GF3 is still sporting the same 12MP sensor from the GF1 which has underwhelming dynamic range and harsh highlight clipping even in raw photo. Hats off to your video, great colour!2 points -

Just popped out down the beach and discovered that fashionably late isn't a thing with sunsets. Good thing I'm not fashionable enough to have been that late, but also not early enough either. Here are some ungraded frame grabs from the GX85 and Olympus 15mm F8 pancake lens, which fits nicely in the jeans pocket. @webrunner5 I seem to remember you were keen on this lens? It sure is sharp and relatively distortion free... it's just not, well, fast! These are 4k grabs, so click on them to see the full quality. I don't know what ISO the GX85 was at, but the images don't look too bad for F8 and after sunset.2 points -

The pinnacle of rear LCD design. They can be left flat against the camera body and that would suit Leica users for whom the contraptions would be alien. They can be used in tilt form only which is how I like to work 95% of the time. They can be turned out 90 degrees sideways which I sometimes use if on a tripod backed hard up to a wall in a confined space, ie, I cannot get behind the camera. They can be fully flipped out and forward facing for the vloggers and narcissists of the world. They can also be flipped out sideways and used for no reason known to man in that manner. As the band Hot Chocolate sang, everyone’s a winner baby. The S1H is close to being ‘The Perfect Camera’. If it was just 10% lighter and had better AF tracking, it would take and wear that crown…factoring in used prices. So much so that if old Pannyboy doesn’t pop out a next gen replacement before my next season next year, I will probably trade my pair of S1R’s and single S5 for another pair of S1H’s and run 3 of the things. The S1R is an absolute steal (used prices) right now, but larger sensor aside, S1H edges it on the ergo side of things. But I could equally make a Sony or Canon or Fuji based system work so it comes down to personal choice and where you want to make your compromise. Flip out side only rear LCD’s are not a dealbreaker for me, - I’d just rather avoid them if I could because they do not really suit my way of working and to use a system that only had this style of screen, such as the S5, R5/6/7, Fuji XT4/XH2, would be a compromise for me.2 points

Here is a music video I did with my beautiful GX85. It now has dethroned my GF1 for photography pleasure, loosended my bonds with my eternally appreciated and now disfunct G6. GX85 earned no1 place in my heart. It was a bit of a way to go for this cam. It has pleased me with nice footage, great personal short cine verité extravaganza, BCam as last resort.. But only until now it has reached my heart completely. It is a true treasure. The road to love was slippery by the slipperyness of the camerabody, the soon to become disfunct back wheel and the mediocore EVF. But still, it is almost as pretty as the GX7 or my GF1 and it feels good in the hand and now even better in the heart. So enough talking, time to let this camera speak. Used Fujinon 12mm in 16 to 9 and ind 1:1 4K photo mode, Tokina 25-50 in the mix. Shot in colour and graded with love in BW. 🙂2 points

The crushing disappointment with the XC10 was the ghastly temporal smoothing resulting in ghosting artifacts, most noticeable in log.1 point -
I never got into the intuitive side of grading again as much as I did with the G6. It was a camera which only lacked one thing to me, a 100mbit codec without noise reduction. I have been saying this a dozen times on the forum, I know. 🙂 Still got my G6 laying on my desk, like a good spirit, though it gave up working. The 28 nFD is a gem of a lens, especially in lit scenarios but also outside. The G6 not haveng IBIS made me film very carefully. I might pick up my almost unused G7 and give it some run. Kinda exiting thought!1 point

@kye It´s maybe Neo- Hitchock which evokes the master. I get really sucked into the images, due to use of perspective, focal length, how you chose your camera position and angle. It looks meticulously done. I could tell or imagine a story or scene for each of these shots. F.i. shot number five is graphicaly perfect, how the arc gets pulled down from top to toe by the lens and position. It evokes a sense of being there. The perfect example of physical position and optical distance (focal length) and the right choice of subject and framing. Telling filmic space is an art by itself. I don´t want to sound like I know the biggest deal about but a bit I do and a lot I recognize it, when I see it. The Hitch part would be the loneliness but alos the dreamlike palette, an peaceful setting but also one of the imagination coming true. It looks forecasting and unsettling. No3 f.i. the start of a scene with a downfall of a character to its end, not by its proposal of formal visual parameters but evenmoreso by its suggestive emotional power, which means that formal laws of visuality are applied, just additionally they also connect on a subconcious level. Frame No. 4 just looks out of this world. Love it. Light, time of the day, hues and tones are to the point as well. Never thought about this lens. It´s fixed focus, right? Very liberating to think of.1 point

I have the same lens, yes it has a unique look to it. Good choice for that video Marty.1 point -
Thanks, that what I thought you meant and what it would be. It would obviously be nicer if it could tilt through 180 degrees (straight up to straight down) while in-line with the lens, and then the normal 270 when flipped out to the side, but I'm used to the GH5 screen which you have to flip around to at least 90-degrees before it can be rotated to face up or down. I don't use it for selfies (I think I tried it a couple of times, but nah...) so for me it's like @Kisaha said - low angle where you are looking straight down or high angle where you are looking straight up (as well as train shots lol). I've gotten quite a number of nice shots by using that high angle approach. Sometimes I'm tall enough that at zoos I can get the camera higher than the glass barriers and so can get a reflection-free shot, or avoid some other barrier or other. The XC10 really was great for standing behind the camera. The ergonomics and layout etc were all exactly what you'd want. Canon sure know how to make a cinema camera.1 point

i'd say the first 290 odd years were ok, just the last ten years' have been a roller coaster down a steep ski slope. i'd swear tv commercials are actually getting dumber, which is rather ironic considering just how many people are continuing to further their education at uni or tafe. So much clickbait on youtube ! I actually dont bother watching you tube any more. What i do is find something i'm interested in and then use idm (internet download manager) to download it, i can then watch it at my leisure, advertisement free. Which pretty handy because i bought a mig, tig stick welder last week . 😀 On drones don't take your drone into the nt (northern territory ) there is pretty much bugger all, where you can fly it legally. Apparently it might wake up the ancestors or something...🙄 There are signs just about everywhere you pull up. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but not by much. So my advice is, IF you do fly your drone, pull up well short and fly the drone the last bit, you can then honestly say you didn't see any signs. At 400 feet everything is so damn small. 😎 Cameras are fine take as many photos as you want. The cynical side of me thinks there is some sort of ploy to encourage either the appropriation of permits or some other form of lubricant perhaps. The airforce fly one of those large turboprop planes around the other side of a hill about 500 metres from my house every 6 weeks or so. i'm pretty sure they fly as low as their allowed because i lose sight of it once it goes behind the hill. One day i promise i'll catch them on camera i swear...1 point

Speaking of great colour.... great colour! Things like this just make me more motivated to practice my colour grading and develop my skills. Every time I fire up Resolve and do some colour grading I can feel that I'm getting just a little bit better. Both in seeing and noticing things, and also in being able to make the colour how I want. While I was watching it I kept thinking of the FD and then thinking it was a Canon camera, but a G6 - that makes it all the more impressive! 🙂1 point

Thanks!! That's the second grade I did on that little edit. The first was with a 250D 2393 PFE film emulation combo, and it well and truly broke the image! Especially in the sky, it really exposed the jagged compression artefacts. So I re-did the grade manually, dealing in a number of adjustments that are similar to a film emulation (including things like lowering the luma of saturated colours, etc) but limiting them to juuuuust before the image broke. I think I've worked out that the GF3 is basically the digital equivalent of the 8mm film camera when film was in. It's not sharp, hasn't got leading image quality, hasn't got stabilisation (except if you put a huge lens on it), and is full-auto, but is small and fun to use and gives a very "amateur" aesthetic.1 point

Sorry, I should have been more specific. When it's flipped out to the side it will tilt through 270 degrees - from facing 180 degrees toward the front and 90 degrees down. If you don't want to flip it out to the side then it will tilt up to around 30 degrees up. That's it. It's not like the XC10 which could do 90 degrees up, I think, which was cool.1 point -
Definitely in the middle rather than in a corner, but all that matters far far less than having a quiet environment and getting the mic in close.1 point

@FHDcrew It´s a pretty big difference. 24mm to 28mm already is, 20mm to 24mm even moreso. 20mm of FF is something really fun and cool to try. You could get a cheap 20mm from Soligor or Vivitar brand. I might try one myself, though I already have and love my Canon nFD 20mm. @Emanuel My friend, I am a sucker for lenses. It depends of the use and the personal style. It doesn't have to be right for everyone. I do not use gimbals and I do not shoot out of trains, but I choose to shoot from chest/waist height or even lower (on the floor) or high up (in dance/music/other events). The NX500 I have you can use for Vloging as well (never do, but for family selfies it works) as it turns 180 degrees.1 point

Exactly my experience as well, even with the Ronin RS2 where the rear servo motor is not blocking the screen, I still need tilt flip screens for complex gimbal movements such as low shots where the rear arms and servo motors would block the rear of the camera and crane movements where the final camera angle is overhead. Also, I find holding the camera much more stable and you can get the camera closer to your body when holding handheld if the screen is off to the side instead of between you and the camera. Also, my V-Mount battery goes directly behind the camera body for all long form content, without a flip screen the battery would have to sit farther back throwing off the balance of the rig, and last but not least, sometimes you need to twist and turn the screen until you find an angle where the sun is not glaring off of it. But hey, to each their own. the good news is there's currently something for everyone. @MrSMW I will admit, there are times where I feel too many people are moving around too much or too close to the camera to feel comfortable with flipping it out, in those cases I just keep it flat against the rear of the camera. I would imagine at weddings with kids (and towards the end of the night drunks) it would be a little nerve wracking to have that screen flipped out. Below is an example of my long form setup; parts of the screen would be very difficult to access if it did not flip out to the side. I was having trouble with my adapter plate in the picture below but usually the camera is nearly flush against the V-Mount battery which is the proper balance for the rig. Outdoors the glare from the sun is usually a good reason to flip it out and twist it in different directions.1 point -

....and a 1.5 crop on the Sony A7iv too... I literally underlined and bolded it. In terms of dealing with crops I'm totally with you, the last thing I want is for the fps to modify my entire lens collection. I'd genuinely be interested in the Komodo if it wasn't for the horrific cropping it does. I like to own the exact focal lengths I know that I like to use and so because I'm not buying the whole set I can buy really nice copies of those models - something that a series of crops just throws out the window. But, like I've said, it seems like almost every manufacturer does it.1 point -

In the US there is a 12 month grace period. You can file after something's been on the market, the patent has a filing date in 2008, but a 'priority date' in 2007. If nothing else you have time to prove that your product is viable before going through the pain and expense of a patent. RED's patent is designated with a "U" preceding the number which stands for 'utility' vs a 'design' patent. Utility patents give their owners broad protection over the use of a new and useful process and they are allowed to invent on top of existing technology which counts as 'prior art.' They disclosed a lot of prior art too referencing other video cameras on the market and stills. Visually lossless compressed raw is certainly not an unpatentable 'abstract idea' to me either because you do have options in camera to choose the amount of compression. The camera is acting on the data physically compressing it in camera. I think the problem is that RED chose to patent it in the first place, as opposed to other companies in the past getting together to form a standards group like JPEG. JPEG is also based on patents too I believe, the companies that helped form it have allowed it to exist outside of patented IP.1 point

Great post. Before I got into video I did some street photography and two of the "rules" I used to use were: 1) if the person you're shooting sees you then make eye contact, smile, and say "thank you" 2) If the person asks you to delete the shot then smile and say "sure" and just do it There's lots of talk online about the first one and the general theory (which fits my experience) is that people don't know what to think when they see someone out shooting photos and so they look to you to determine how to react and what to think about it, so by smiling you're indicating that you're a calm and well-intentioned person (rather than a threat) and by saying thanks it makes them feel good because you're indicating they've done you a favour (which they have) and doing things for other people who seem nice gives people a nice feeling. If you're asking people for permission beforehand (which some people prefer) then a compliment is often a great icebreaker like "I love your hat/shirt/look/smile - would you mind if I took a quick photo?", as once again, people see that you're a calm person, its flattering (presumably they also like the hat they're wearing, or whatever you mentioned), and it explains why you might want to take a photo of them. I remember that people are often calmed if you give them a business card too, as it's "proof" that you're legit and not up to no good. Remaining calm and having an answer ready goes a long way it seems. Still, confrontation isn't something that I'm particularly fond of, so I tend to avoid it where I can. In terms of flying drones, I think it seems like a reasonable income stream if you're willing to go through all the hoops to get registered etc, and then do enough flying to justify getting certified etc. For me, I'd spend about 3 hours flying per country I'd be visiting - the absolute worst type of bureaucracy-to-flying ratio imaginable! Yeah, I skipped through the video looking for him to get arrested - had he not mislabeled it I might have relaxed and watched it more thoroughly. Still, clickbait works - just ask the people who have written headlines for tabloid newspapers and pamphlets for the last, say, 300 years!1 point

Tilt screen, 100% yes. It’s the flip out to the side I am not keen on. But, flip out to the side is still better than no tilt at all such as with all Leica bodies and the Sigma FP. I couldn’t switch camera system mid season, which is where I am right now and yes, do not actually that want to right now (but enjoy the hypothetical speculation!). I’m hoping that any future changes to my set up will be within the L Mount Alliance for the smoothest transition, but as above, any change has to tick min 3/4 of my criteria because at the moment, I am only checking 1/4 🤔🤪 There are more than 4 requirements however and my current system checks all my needs, so the above are just ‘future’ requirements.1 point -

@MrSMW BTW, in case you haven't seen a runway show's photographers pit, here is a pretty good picture of one. Words can't really describe it until you have experienced it. Every sq inch counts and I'm already on everyone's bad list when I show up with both a video camera, video tripod, and a photography camera with a Canon EF 70-200 on it. So yes, for video, the tilt/flip screen is essential for me.1 point -
I read a rumour today that Canon is planning an R7C for 2023!! That rumour made me pause. I have an R7 on pre order, but I am in no big hurry for another camera..but of course it's just a rumour..I am split at the moment. I can live with most of the cons, it is a middle priced camera after all, but the codec could be problematic, and I do not usually work with proxies. There are cheaper Chinese speedboosters around. The Canon vND adapter is quite bad for 500€, so I have lost faith in their accessories.1 point

Absolutely. 100 years of cinema mainly filmed at 24fps means that people in general consider the result to be the most realistic depiction of motion. I would expect, if the entire industry switched to 60fps tomorrow then in another 100 years that would be considered the most realistic. Given the prevalence of video games that might well happen.1 point -
Did it win, though? Apparently Red settled with Sony after Sony counter sued for infringement. And Apple's case was dismissed for what looks, at least partially, like procedural reasons (basically due to incompleteness -- the decision uses the word "unclear" multiple times in relation to Apple's rationale and says literally "In sum, Petitioner’s obviousness challenge is unclear and incomplete"). That is, Apple lost, but it is not clear if the patent won.1 point
-
So that was the post to which I was responding. I wasn't referring to the patent. As someone who's name is on one or two patents, I would suggest that such arbitrary claims indicate that a clueless patent examiner possibly rejected/challenged some of the claims. At the date the RED patent application was filed, there was absolutely no novelty nor innovation in specifying internal or external recording, so it was meaningless to do so (and even detrimental to RED), unless they were trying to appease an examiner who had no clue. There is another reason that specific, arbitrary claims sometime appear in patents, but I don't think that is the case here. I sense that the patent is weak, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it can't be successfully defended. Ha, ha! I briefly scanned the claims of the patent that you linked earlier in the thread. I might have to take another look at it.1 point

Companies can be clueless about these matters. And Nikon comes from a stills background. On the other hand, Nikon's patents portfolio includes tens of thousands of patents, including thousands in the US. They can probably dig into it for counter infringements, if they are forced to. I don't recall resolution specifics in the Sony case, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony did exactly this to fend off Red.1 point
