  1. Does this mean I finally get to retire my Magic Screw? https://www.eoshd.com/news/2-years-later-canon-quietly-removes-fake-overheating-limits-of-eos-r5-in-firmware-update/

  2. That is a very interesting phenomenon, and makes perfect sense when you think about it.....but I think in the real world it is nearly impossible to see in a typical scene. Your test scene had a lot of sharp edges and detail combined with a lot of shake and post stabilization; in a typical shooting scenario the camera is farther away from the subject, there's few if any sharp edges, and the camera is typically also moving in some visible direction; combine that with compression from online platforms and I don't think it would be discernable at all. The biggest problem I have with post stabilization is trying to balance the warping effect that post stabilization adds to certain scenes especially when shooting with wide angle lenses or the motion you are trying to fix. For me, I am more trying to smooth a too sudden motion more so than actual camera shake. When using it to smooth out a start or stop in motion it is quite effective but sometimes I have to try all 3 options in DR before finding one that looks natural. The one place where I think this phenomenon would be perceptible nearly always would be shooting detail shots for real estate. In real estate videos though you nearly always use sliders or gimbals for that very reason....too many sharp straight edges that would make any camera shake, post stabilization, or horizon tilt very apparent. I think at the end of the day nothing beats true stabilization equipment, IBIS, Digital IS, and Post stabilization are all just tools to get you "close enough" when "close enough" is acceptable.

    Stabilisation in post

If you have 180 shutter and shake the camera then your images will have shake and motion blur. This will look normal because the blur will match the shake - if you shake / move left the blur will be horizontal and the size of the blur will match the shake / motion in the shot. If you stabilise in post, you remove the shake but not the blur. If you stabilised in post completely so that the shot had no shake then it would look like a tripod shot because the camera movement would be gone, but all the blur would remain, so a stationary shot would blur in random directions at random times for no conceivable reason. This is a test I did some time ago comparing OIS / IBIS vs EIS (stabilisation in post is a form of EIS). The shot at 25s on the right "Digital Stabilisation Only" shows this motion blur without the associated camera shake. The IBIS + Digital Stabilisation combo was much better and is essentially the same as OIS + Digital Stabilisation. The issue here is that people using IBIS or OIS often have all the stabilisation they need from that, so the gyro stabilisation is aimed at people who have neither. This "blur doesn't match shake" also happens in all action and 360 cameras when they shoot in low-light and their auto-SS adjusts to have shutter speeds that include blur (which is why I bought an action camera with OIS rather than EIS).

  4. It all goes to prove our original point that it was a purposeful software limitation, and that you were not allowed to use the full capabilities of the hardware you just paid £4000 for. It should have been a class action lawsuit and maybe Canon knows it, which is why this u-turn has happened. At least we don't have to do the card trick now. I currently have an EOS R5 because I'm a hypocrite. So I'll see if it can go the full 2 hours of 8K without the card pull, and report back.

  6. I think i am gonna use gyro stab to some degree but not 100% cos I like the handheld look, just to smooth it out. On some other particular shots I might use it more extensivly. I would also try using a gimbal with a gyro to get it as smooth as possible as I hate that robotic walking gimbal look. Or I would just use my air2s for those perfect floating camera shots. Dunno, need more experimetns. The softwae is just getting developed (I use with gyroflow for now, but I hope either Blackmagic will add support for Sony or the former will produce their promiced plugin so the workflow becomes more intuitive and simple). If I had to choose which one to get - stable footage or motion blur, I would choose stable footage, if that what I need. Some times you must have a motion blur. Just prioritize what you need.

  7. I have spent 5 years on this forum complaining about every camera on the market. All I needed was 4K120, great reliable AF, IBIS, full frame, 10 bit, and great photo capabilities. We always had some of those specs in a camera but never all of them together in one package. Then the R5 was released. I sold my Sony, and been happily shooting ever since. You probably didn’t see me post anything since then. It has all the specs I listed and MORE (canon colors, great ergonomics etc). after 2Y of use I am still extremely happy with the R5. First time in 10y that I couldn’t care less about any camera release. the temperature issue is a joke. I have been shooting for 2 years and never got any overheating once.

  8. Looks like I’ve reached the point where premiere will be a necessity for some work I do 😞 So now I gotta break away from resolve a bit and start learning premiere. I’ll still color in resolve, though this exposure technique first mentioned in this thread will be very useful for quick grades in premiere. Honestly with this, along with turning CST into a LUT, I could probably replicate my grading process in premiere. I don’t do any complex grades, I simply like the organization and behavior of the tools available in resolve.

  9. This is basically just begging for a fairly modern GoPro or Insta360. Lately, I've been using a GoPro mounted to my bumper and an Insta360 One R (Leica lens mod) on a rigid mount on my roof rack. I drive a Wrangler which is definitely not known for a smooth ride - when I take it on really gnarly backroad trails, it's smooth to the point where it can be a bit disappointing (the footage no longer reflects just how bumpy the trail was). I'd try a Hero 9 (or 10) and/or an Insta360 One R with a simple pole mount before spending too much time rigging up a crazy Z Axis or gimbal for your bigger camera.

    Stabilisation in post

The worst is stabilizing in post when someone is (not so carefully) walking with the camera. Everything just rhythmically blurring for a fraction of a second. It shows especially when there’s a lot of trees, traffic signs, etc in the frame.

  11. Good point, “side grading” to a camera like that is a good idea. Or even a Panasonic s5 if I still want goodies like IBIS. I guess I wanted to see what I can do with what I already have, instead of have to sell a lot of my gear and go through that hassle.

  13. Well I am thoroughly pissed with my R5 right now....have had it a little over a month and have to send it in for repairs already....MAJOR EVF lag. Have been shooting runway shows for 2wks straight and my keeper rate was below 60% because of the lag. I also shot a few b-roll clips for the C70 with the R5; it was 95F, outdoors not direct sunlight mostly photography with a few clips up to 2min long at 4K60FPS not even using the 4K HQ option and I got the overheat warning. I suppose before I send it in I will update the firmware to 1.6 to at least "fix" the fake overheating problem. My C70 was filming 4K Raw LT almost continuously at the same time and I had no issues with it. I have also had weird issues with the R5 where the shutter button after being half pressed for too long while in eye tracking mode will not take the picture after going from half pressed to fully pressed on the shutter button. Had to fully let off of the shutter button, hope it re-aquired the eye tracking after pressing the shutter button again before taking the picture.....and typically finding out after the shot that the EVF display was so far behind that the moment was long gone. If I could take the R5 back today I would do so and stick with my 5DIV for another few years. As far as shortening the life of the camera with the new firmware, I really don't think that's a big deal at this point. I got the 4yr Canon CarePAK coverage so the motherboard could fry itself tomorrow and Canon would still have to repair or replace it. I am surprised that they did not remove the ridiculous 30min recording limit with this FW update. The R7 doesn't have it, and its long gone from Panasonic and I think Sony cameras as well, no idea what Canon is waiting on. I do think since Canon does have to honor their CarePAK coverage that at a minimum Canon doesn't expect the cameras to fail within 4yrs even with the new FW otherwise they wouldn't have released it due to the potential cost of replacing customer's R5s.

    New Firmware for R5/R6/R3

I did shoot yesterday all day on 4k50p and some 100p, no overheating symbol once! Soo over the moon with this update! Man if they do that in the first place 2 years ago it will be way different market now.

  15. I found something interesting yesterday. When you set the fp to output raw when you have a connected monitor over HDMI that is not the Ninja V, it displays the b+w mosaic sensor image. You can clearly see all the highlights and where they're clipping because it's underexposed. Obviously if you have a Ninja V connected, it can display the image as Vlog which is more clear, but I thought this was interesting.

  17. R5 in 8K RAW has less latitude in the shadows than a Lumix S5 in downsampled 4K, has half the battery life, triple the price of the S5. Worlds best camera it is not, though for your needs it might be of course. But that I wouldnt be able to know, of course.:) Now let´s test the camera running in the sun of current climate change days. I bet it will not look good, since the hardware is the same, with lack of any kind of sufficient cooling. @FHDcrew Class leading latitude in the shadows by the Lumix S5. R5 has impressive resolution and looks great up to ETTR -5.

  19. The one that came today, people getting over 2hrs of 8K without overheating. EOS R5 Firmware Update Version 1.6.0 22nd July 2022 Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements: 1. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for movie recording. When [High] is selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when the temperature of the camera body and card become high, which may allow for longer movie recording than before, depending on the shooting conditions. Note that the temperature of the bottom surface of the camera may increase at this time. 2. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images. 3. Enhances the performance of "Movie Digital IS". It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens. 4. Fixes minor issues.

    Gimbal for XT3

After saying I was done with gimbals, I gave my Star Wars stormtrooper white Crane 3 one final chance and for the very limited purpose I had for it, it worked OK with the S5 and kit zoom. Just. I think it’s on the limit and the motors are having to work extra hard to balance it. I went with a QR plate on the base of the gimbal itself, so 95% of the time, all 3 axis are locked and it just becomes part of the tripod. Slightiy wobbly if lightly shaken, but can’t fall over like a freestanding monopod would so a good workaround for me.

  21. I would love to be in Resolve 100% of the time but I'm too tied in to Premiere to switch, at least for work stuff. Sometimes I get asked to incorporate bits from an old video by a client. So I have projects within projects within projects sometimes. The other great thing is bringing print material from designers from Illustrator and InDesign into After Effects and eventually into a video.
