  1. I normally always say, “I would like” and silently correct people who say, “I want” which does indeed sound very self-deserving, so only used it in the continuation of the “I wants” above. I would however like to obtain the said three items at some point, if I can afford and deserve them 😜

  2. When you are retired even 150 is a ball buster. I paid 109 dollars for my GH2, I had to eat dog turds and tree bark for 2 weeks to make it up. The yard is clean now, but the trees look like crap 😜

  3. Sensors in smartphones are getting larger. Much larger. The progress in the last 7 years is remarkable (as my chart above shows). Smartphones have caught up and surpassed Super 16mm. Is Super 35mm next? New blog post: https://www.eoshd.com/news/smartphones-and-their-growing-threat-to-mirrorless-cameras-2022-edition/

  4. I hate the fake camera phone DoF look for stills & "cinematic" video modes. Just like beauty filters etc, it just screams fake and hence cringe. That said, standard photos on my iPhone 13 can look great with a little editing, especially for social media & sharing. I just got back from a big holiday family trip and 90% of my shots were done on the iPhone and only 10% with my Canon R6 (basically only for low light situations). The best camera is the one you have on you and I just didn't feel like lugging the MILC+lenses around, especially since we were on boats, beaches etc every day. I didn't even bring the Leica M as it made me nervous getting lost/stolen. So yeah, smartphone all day for travel snapshots & camcorder moments. But for serious portraits, night & pro work, you still can't beat a mirrorless with fast glass. The phone lenses are the real IQ bottleneck imo. That Sony Xperia Pro1 caught my attention though, great option if you're in the Sony Alpha & Android ecosystem.

Well if you've got lens IS + EIS you might not see a huge difference when shooting wide/medium but if you're on EF primes mostly like I am then shooting handheld without EIS will be shaky. And to me that defeats a big part of going mirrorless. Plus it took so long for Canon cameras to get IBIS, I really don't feel like going back to not having it. 8K60p is of very little interest to me, I don't wanna deal with those file sizes. Things like shutter angle however are clutch on the field, as is magnify while recording etc. I mean don't get me wrong, there is a lot to like about the R5C, I've been praising it since it was announced. But R5's 1.6 update does throw some shade at it and may even trump it in some scenarios.

  7. I'm gradually pushing myself to see how basic/manual a camera I can get away with using as a proof of concept. That's why I'm shooting with my P2K and my GX85 in full-manual. If I find that these things are do-able then it will put cameras like the P4K, P6K Pro, Sigma FP, etc on the potential list, which have much nicer image quality and DR than the GH5 and (potentially) GH6. We haven't seen a lot from the GH6 but that just means that the jury is still out on it, rather than it being ruled out. Whenever I hear someone saying "I want.." as some sort of statement that implies they should get it just because they want it, I just reply with "I want a Lamborghini." and normally follow it with "what's your point?" or "but back here in reality" or "I love to dream" etc... The kids probably find it annoying as hell but it amuses me no end!

  8. According to my maths, that would be 20 weeks to afford a used S1R and about 9 years on that diet to get the Leica SL2. Not worth it for the Leica.

  9. Well I bought a used OnePlus Pro 9. Got a really good deal on one from a Pawnshop, like 350 bucks used. And a friend of mine wanted to buy my Xperia Pro-1 for nearly what I paid for it so why not. He has several Sony FF cameras, and they sort of work together well. So, a win for him and well me also. I have been a fan of the OnePlus cameras, never had one but like an underdog. And this video helped push me over to the Pro 9. I have not got it yet, mid next week they say. So, something else to learn but hey sort of like doing that stuff. They have had some nice updates on the phone as of late. Good looking B&W and the XPan thing is interesting. We shall see soon enough. Interesting that the picture they use of the camera is not a OnePlus Pro 9 it is the cheaper model OnePlus 9, hmm. But footage is using the Pro 9 in the video, odd. Oh well.

  12. I want to want to want to not want to want a new camera 😅 Yeah I suppose that statement sounds silly. But in my case it’s true. I don’t want to want a new camera haha

  13. I would love to try out those large sensor phones. It's pretty incredible already what my Huawei P30 (which I bought for $250 CAD) can do by guessing at focal distance and combining images from it's three lenses. What I'll often do on a recreational excursion is bring a longer prime for my Nikon Z6 (either an 85 or 50 usually) and use the smartphone for wide shots, where depth of focus can be deeper. I absolutely adore the in-body raw photo editing in the Nikon, and Adobe Photoshop Raw on the phone is a pretty annoying and terrible program, but I would imagine that software will advance quickly and that'll help further blur the difference between the two devices. We can't really fight change, I'm learning to use both. Here are some shots from each, I'm sure you'll be able to tell which are which, but I think you'll be surprised how similar they are.

  14. 9mm F1.9 prime on Super 16mm is considered a decent lens. That's what the 12 Ultra has. The telephoto has a deep DOF, which is quite useful actually as you can get a lot in focus whereas 135mm on full frame, it is more challenging to not just see the subject and nothing else. At closer focus distances you have a very shallow DOF regardless on both of these lenses. You can also buy a DOF adapter and use DSLR lenses on it.

  16. Funny video showing 3 different approaches to phone footage. Motion Cam looks pretty good on it I think. No clue what phone he was using though.

  17. I have been preaching that to the choir here and very few listen lol. Smartphones already are better other than maybe zoom lenses than nearly all consumer cameras now. Sure, top end cameras with top end glass are better but at what price? And with the Motion Cam app you have Raw to boot on the Android phones. Amazing stuff for an amazing price these days right in your pocket.

I also noticed blotches (compression artefacts?) on flat areas of 60p GH5 footage that I didn't find in the same shot taken on a GH6. It was most noticeable in the first couple of frames of clips shot in long GOP, and not as noticeable but still present in subsequent frames. So if you're flicking through unedited clips then it definitely looks worse on frame 1 of each clip.

Don, you are very old school, b4 and PL loving man.;) L mount is highly adaptable just like Canon RF, Nikon Z and what not mounts. Lumix S5 with full HDMI would have been my dream camera. So close. You can get them used for 1200 EUR, S1 for similar prices. With the GH5 I discovered a nasty blotch issue in VLog again. I have almost forgotten about it. Pink large blotches on skintones f.i. It was a well exposed shot, daylight, cloudy summerday, which I did last year for a shortfilm. Yesterday I was grading some of my older stuff away and building some digital emulsions and bang, GH5 reminded me of an issue I had found years ago with caucasian skin. Had forgotten about it.

They did a comparison with the S1 and S5, both sharing the same sensor, pipeline and sofore image, being indeed the dynamic range and latitude champs with Canon getting close and Nikon Z9 equalling it with its N-Raw flavours. All tests for video of course. Nevertheless GH6 image in DGO mode is very impressive. Too bad it still has a few things left out in comparison to the two GH5 models, such as 2xDigi zoom or 1.4 crop for S16 coverage. No 2x digizoom for my S1 neither btw. S5 is a steal for the image you get. Even lower price than a S1. S series still needs some grading love. But with that any look is achieveable. Natural light being the most "videoish condition", needing more effort than in lit enviroments imho.
