EOS R alternative and update

If you need professional standard stills, then yes, I'd go with a Panasonic S5. (or the S1 or GH6 also from Panasonic) But if the stills is more casual / personal usage, and not a key requirement, then I'd definitely be going with the new Sony FX30 instead at that price point. The various Fujifilm options also get a worthy shout out. (X-T4 or the more expensive X-H2S)2 points -
.. an older sensor perhaps but not a 6 year old sensor, that's ridiculous. even canon are smarter than that. as for the R6, I've been shooting with it for some time now, and its a very good all-rounder (basically a 1DX3 in RF mirrorless form). It shoots 5.5K oversampled footage, has DPAF2, can do up to 4K60p no crop in 10-bit 422 which the A7IV can't even do. CLog/Clog3. The only downside is RS & overheating. If the new sensor/processor fixes those I'd upgrade in a heartbeat. Would be nice to see a couple extra things like 4K120p or RAW but that would probably steal too much from R3/R5.2 points

Best value is probably the S5. You might even find one of Panasonic’s when it comes with a couple of lenses and cash back. Weak points are video AF and EVF2 points -

Lets not forget XH2S & FX30. A7IV has similar cons to R6: poor rolling shutter & overheating issues. not great for run & gun.2 points -

I would go with either the Panasonic S1, Sony a7 IV, Fuji X-H2 or a GH6 Look at the pros and cons of each of those and see which one you prefer S1 has had such big firmware updates it's almost a Mark II, and has the best image for the price (in V-LOG) and is full frame. But lacking in the AF department and is quite a brick. a7 IV is a very capable all-rounder. No major weak areas. Might be a bit over your $2K budget though. X-H2 has the best codec, and is 8K. Excellent AF. It isn't full frame and may necessitate new lenses. GH6 is a good bargain and if you don't mind the crop sensor, has the biggest feature set for video of nearly any camera on the market. Endless creativity and options.2 points -

Fuji X-H2 in the house
Attila Bakos reacted to Dustin Jenkins for a topic
Sure. I don't have 2 copies of the same lens so I won't be able to shoot them simultaneously. I might be able to get some black magic shots too, I don't own any canon or Sony since I've gone to Fuji.1 point -
..if you need AF though Panasonic is probably the worst system of the bunch and a huge downgrade from Canon. Image quality means nothing if you can't hold focus. Best bang for buck is probably XH2 right now. 45MP stills. 8K, 10-bit, ProRes. Phase-detect AF with eye detect. Film simulations. FX30 also super solid for run & gun. Oversampled 4K. AF on par with Canon. 4K120p. 10-bit. LUT support. Top handle with XLRs. But yeah, switching systems is expensive so if you own a lot of lenses probably better to wait for suitable model than switch. APS-C / Super35 seems to be where it's at right now as far as bang for buck in the $2K bracket.1 point

Another vote for the Panny S5. I prefer my S1R as a pure stills machine and for dedicated video work, my S1H, but unless I needed: A: Stellar tracking video AF B: Err, that’s it really, anything else is nitpicking… I doubt there is a better option sub 2k and a mint used one could be picked up sub 1.5k. Or an XH2.1 point

EOS R alternative and update

There is a another rumour circulating of an R8..similar specs but a simpler 30mpxls sensor.. It seems that there are two cameras coming soon, an R replacement (it could be the R8 with the R sensor but various impovements all around) and an R6mkII with the sensor as the biggest - and very welcomed - difference, but probably other faster and/or more modern internals that will make it a better camera altogether. Price is very important also, if they could keep it close to R6's money that would make it a hit camera. To be completely honest, I was expecting the R6mkII to move to RF full frame, so I am quite excited about this rumor. Of course the devil is in the details and those details could make or brake this release. It could be only the sensor and maybe the processor, but also a myriad other little impovements; or not! As of our friend @tomastancredi, it would be a pity that you are going to miss the R replacement just for a month or so.. If you want something fast and with amazing battery life, the R7 is a very honest choice and for a very good price.1 point -

I just copy pasted the rumor, but because I have the Umbrella Academy power of making lies become the truth, it may will happen! @tomastancrediyou ask about the camera, but I ask about your lenses. We all know here that the most important aspect on a system is the lenses we own. Are you going to sell your lenses and move to Panasonic?1 point -
Well I am torn between primes and zooms actually… On one hand, I am looking at 3 bodies + 3 zooms and never having to change a lens. But on the other, 3 bodies plus 3 primes plus 3 zooms with arguably better resolution from those primes and not arguable better low light…but the trade off is having to cart around those 3 extra lenses and change them. Otherwise nah, not a wide angle guy at all, especially for video. It’s very rare I have any need to film in FF terms wider than 30mm and my principle range is 50-150. Even for stills, anything wider than 20mm is just too wide for my tastes and I rarely shoot wider than 28mm. So yes, 20-40mm over 11-20mm pretty much all day long! I’m still very much on the fence over committing to next years kit…which will then be the next 3 years minimum which is why I am still hesitating. I’m not going to continue with my L Mount system as it is as my current set up is a compromise. Love the output for both stills and video, but the combo I need of bodies and lenses doesn’t work as it should and as some other systems offer. L Mount is still in the running however depending on what is announced and available prior to the end of Feb 2023. The clock is very much ticking regarding L Mount… I could very easily flip to an A7iv + Tamron 35-150 plus pair of FX30’s one with the 20-40 and the other with the 17-70 and be done…and it may be what I do. My current first choice however is a pair of XH2’s and a single XH2S and I am currently trying the former but struggling to find both the time and the typical conditions to test it properly. With Fuji, it would be a primarily prime based set up with a switch to zooms for ceremonies and speeches at weddings as I don’t really favour their zoom options over the Sony zoom options. Then there is the Nikon Z9 curveball but can I go back to a camera that big…?? I wish Sigma would just build me an FP-L with; tilt screen, mechanical shutter (or e:shutter comparable with the Z9), IBIS, 4K 50/60p and a bigger battery and I’d never buy another camera the rest of my career. Am I asking too much of Sigma? 😂1 point

Or the Meike 10mm f/2 APS-C for E Mount at only $449: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1725738-REG/meike_mk_1020cfmf_e_10mm_f_2_0_aps_c_manual.html Or get AF with the Sony 11mm f/1.8 Lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1709231-REG/sony_e_11mm_f_1_8_lens.html Or go adapt MFT lenses to E Mount, with the super super cheap SLR Magic 8mm f4 for only US$149! (I've got this lens myself) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1322738-REG/slr_magic_slr8m4_8mm_f_4_lens.html The image quality would be such a massive leap up for you from a FS700! Heck, even for me with the FS7, the FX30 would be an improvement. (well, in terms of picture, of course a move backwards in lots of other areas such as SDI/Genlock/NDs/EVF/etc) Exactly, people in the comments online I have seen hating upon the FX30 for its rolling shutter performance simply because the FX30 isn't the best ever possible they've seen, yet in reality vs the comparable competition then the FX30's rolling shutter performances holds up very well!1 point

That and a rear tilt screen...which is why for me, the XH2S has to 'win', - it has at least 1 of my 2 'missing' features. But otherwise, I think it's pretty fabulous in terms of looks & form factor and has a zero compromise lens line up for me; Tamron; 20-40mm f2.8, 17-70mm f2.8 (or 28-75), 35-150mm f2/2.8 The above lenses at 1.5x crop factor are PERFECT for my needs. So maybe why not just go Sony you might say... As a hybrid shooter, I'm not fully convinced by Sony for stills... There's something about the colour that even with recent models, is still slightly off for me.1 point
