It looks like a pretty decent camera, and the screen is awesome, but it doesn't seem to be a vast improvement over what Sony offers. Doesn't stop the usual suspects from gushing over it, though. Watching the Gerald Undone video, and it's really a bummer to see how much of a Sony shill he has become. He will bring up negatives, but then downplays them or just outright dismisses them as not important. Meanwhile, he'll temper his compliments of other cameras. The titles of his reviews from the last year or so really sum it up, honestly. Sony a7R V Review: A Fantastic Camera! Sony a7 IV Review: The Best Hybrid Camera for the Money! Sony Alpha 1: A VERY IMPRESSIVE Camera! (Sony a1 Review) Sony FX30 Review: Good Camera. Great Value! SONY ZV-E10 Review: Sony's BEST Budget Camera The SONY a7S III: A Technical MASTERPIECE! The SONY a7C: Why THIS Camera Is IMPORTANT! vs. Canon R3 Review: 10 Things I Love/Hate Fujifilm X-H2S: A Very Nerdy Review & Technical Guide Nikon Z6 II - Video Review & Blackmagic RAW Discussion The PANASONIC S5: A STRANGE but POWERFUL Camera Sigma fp L Review: A VERY CONFUSING Camera! Kinefinity MAVO Edge 6K: An Undone Review I don't even think he does it on purpose (or maybe he does?) But it feels like we're far ways from what made him appealing to me in the first place, which was a measured analysis of a camera's capabilities.4 points -
Yeah big yawn. This camera is about 2 years too late. Canon R5 already did the high MP, 8K $4K FF hybrid camera in 2020. And with no weird crop factors, binning or horrible rolling shutter like the A7RV displays.3 points

$3900 / 4500€ The 'R' series was always a snoozer for me personally and this is no exception. The video specs are weird AF: 1.2x crop on 8K & 4K60. 4K24/30 uncropped but binned. No 4K120p. S35 mode oversampled but 30p tops. Props on the new tilt screen mechanism though, finally a best of both worlds solution.3 points

I'm also enjoying some early Simpson's Treehouse of Horror and Are You Afraid of the Dark? to relive some childhood trauma lol. I HIGHLY recommend the director's cut of Doctor Sleep since you're a Shining fan. It somehow is a great sequel to both the movie and the book. Three movies I watch every Halloween are WNUF Halloween Special, Trick r Treat, and The Guest. All worth checking out for something new.2 points -
Deciding closest modern camera to Digital Bolex look
kaylee reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It is interesting that Joe says in the video, they wanted the absolute character of the Kodak sensor to be preserved in-camera, without any noise reduction or introduction of any circuit noise. Just the natural grain from the sensor. So it got me thinking... With HVEC and modern sensors we have a squeaky clean look. It has a lot of noise reduction you can't turn off, and a lot of compression. So if we wanted the colour, character, uncompressed Cinema DNG and film grain of the Digital Bolex... We need to find a modern camera... Because the D16 on eBay now is $6K!! I think the closest I own is the Sigma Fp-L in crop mode. It has the resolution for 2x crop so works with Super 16mm lenses. But any crop from about 1.37x onward gives a very detailed texture to the uncompressed 4K raw.... as it is a 1:1 pixel readout. If you download the frame grab below, and look at the full 4K JPG conversion of my DNG, it is apparent at 1:1 that nothing is being lost and nothing is being added. Especially since this is at ISO 3200 behind a strong ND filter. At lower ISOs it looks a bit too clean to be a Digital Bolex-a-like. However at ISO 3200 it is perfectly on note. What other cameras could we wrangle (with a few tricks) to look like a Kodak CCD? GH5S? S1R 5K? Canon RAW? Nikon Z9? How about our smartphones in Motion Cam?1 point -
And puppies? Why don't we see more puppy videos??1 point

I agree. It is definitely also important to hold companies accountable for what they make. That probably sounds privileged as we are so spoiled when it comes to cameras now. They are raking in the cash though so why not keep them on their toes. I have always been a Panasonic guy as I felt they always pushed forward when it came to image quality and new features. I have felt the same with Fuji. Sony and Canon have always felt more strategic in what they put out, in a bad way. Hard to escape from their state of the art auto focus. Nikon's current in camera RAW release is exciting though and overdue. Hopefully that pushes Sony, Panasonic, and Canon to include RAW in all their models.1 point

Panasonic GH6
mercer reacted to hyalinejim for a topic
Well, it's certainly true that the GH6 has not made the same kind of splash that the GH5 did. Personally, I don't find M43 to be too much of a burden when shooting with a 0.64x Speedbooster. It's kind of a sweet spot of boosted light for exposure and manageable DOF. For me full frame has too little when shooting wide open with fast glass and I think that approximately APS-C or Super35 sensor size is pretty good. M43 is too small, but with a 0.64x speedbooster it's actually "bigger" than APS-C at 1.28x crop relative to full frame. Here are a few clips shot wide open with an Iscorama 36 on an Olympus OM 50 1.8 manual lens. Talk about making life difficult for myself with an Iscorama shooting wide open - swapping diopters between almost every single shot! A lesson in patience! Oh well, it's worth it for the bokeh and the flares I guess 😂1 point -
I guess I don't care a ton because I only really look at the technical side of his reviews. He is sometimes the first person to post dynamic range and rolling shutter tests, although he doesn't use a measurement for RS so its not super useful.1 point

BE NICE! I did, I was a backer and got the DVD a little while back! I liked it, though I wish they'd leaned into horror more like he did with the original. But the commitment to creating something like that, I have no choice but to love it. Watch it with the Trader Tony commentary on if you haven't already, it's hilarious! That's dope! Both Chris and Jimmy George seem like really cool dudes, though I don't think Jimmy worked on the sequel due to the pandemic. I've really enjoyed all their films!1 point -
The major issue with cameras these days is the cripple hammer / technical limitations they put in them which aren't in the marketing. Sure, a camera might be 8K, 240p, 10-bit, but the fact that it's not all of them at the same time is the information that isn't mentioned, and which combinations are available are hard to find out. Gerald is useful because he seems to systematically find many of those gotchas whereas other people don't go that deeply. In terms of Sony and his opinions, to put it bluntly, who gives a crap? If you're spending thousands of dollars then you should be making your own decisions rather than simply listening to other peoples conclusions. Gerald is good because his videos are full of facts about the tech details... just ignore his opinions and you're fine. Most other camera reviews are ONLY opinions. That's where we should be getting annoyed..1 point

It wouldn't shock me at all. There will always be a market for monitors and recorders, but cameras are increasingly adding features and codecs that you needed recorders for in the past. The ability to record RAW was important short term, but it's only a matter of time before these companies develop their own flavor of RAW or implement ProRes RAW or BRAW directly, leaving Atomos out in the cold. It's hard to see where the camera industry will be in 5 years, let alone the monitor/recorder industry, but I imagine the former will be in better shape than the latter, especially with so many budget monitor options out there now and in the future.1 point

Fuji X-H2 in the house
kye reacted to Attila Bakos for a topic
Here is a short demonstration of the Cr channels: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1veiqGodXKxerdNF_ksqLlAnFWbGQUtEe/view?usp=sharing 8bit is rubbish, never ever use it. 10bit is somewhat better than on the X-T3/4, but the chroma smoothing is still there, ProRes doesn't seem to help either. Interestingly the X-H2s seems to have more smoothing than the X-H2. As much as I love Fuji for stills, I think I'll stick to other brands for video as I'm very sensitive for this kind of stuff, but for 99.9% of Fuji video shooters this is still a non-issue I guess.1 point -

I'm not really into Halloween (and it's less of a thing here in Australia, although it is growing in popularity each year).... but, Alien is seriously good sci-fi cinema! I can't imagine you haven't seen it, but if not, wow are you in for a treat! My first experience with the series was Aliens, which I watched as a ~7? year old alone in the lounge room of someones big old scary house where my dad was visiting and the adults put it on to keep me entertained why they talked somewhere else in the house. I had a major jump-scare when during a particularly tense moment in the film someone suddenly stuck their head into the room to ask me what I wanted for dinner! A memorable watch! I've often wished that I could 'forget' a movie so that I would get to watch it for the first time (again). I purposefully don't watch my favourites for years so that I have forgotten at least some stuff and get some surprises and fun twists. Other fun movies that come to mind: The Forgotten 2004 with Julianne Moore (watch it without any spoilers or previews at all if you can) The Ring The Fourth Kind 2009 with Milla Jovovich (again, watch without spoilers or previews if possible) and of course, just for fun... Shawn of the Dead 🙂1 point

I've defended Gerald a lot on this forum, but when you do those analyses and then completely downplay the results or say they're not important because you're in the bag for Sony, you do more harm misleading people than the reviewers that just gush about how great every camera that is sent to them is. He built a reputation for his technical, long form reviews that were neutral and even-handed. Now that reputation is used to shill a company. It's dishonest, far more so than those that just give their opinions. And whether we like it or not, these people DO influence a lot of people's purchasing decisions. Whether you're one of those people or not, his move from being objective to significantly less so should be disappointing.0 points
