    Shoot Film Stills?

These horror pics are insane. Just to keep this going. I shoot with an F2 and a F100 both Nikon in BW with Hp5 from a big roll or any Colour film I can find thst is cheap. I alternate between the two cameras and basically only use them when I am on vacation. @mercer because you asked about caffenol. Thats how I do it. It works pretty well and you can just dump it. you can also push two stops without much trouble depending on what you are after. Colour film has become crazy expensive and my fridge stock is nearly dried up. Apparently its because china is hardly doing the chemicals anymore or something. 14,-€ Colour film my ass...

    Sony FX30 (S35 FX3)

Not necessary to compare the FX30 to a S5, as the S5 is a full grown hybrid offering Full Frame goodness in 10bit video and for photography as well, also offering a variety of features like anamporhpic modes, which the FX30 does not offer. The S5 offers Full Frame and you can go down to Super 35 as well, cropping to the sensor size of the Sony FX30. The sensor of the S5 is more than twice the size of the FX30, still it only being almost half the price of it. For people who don´t need AF and timecode, the S5 is the better option imo. Best bang for buck! Better image quality, cheaper wide angle options, full frame and full image cirlce on cheap wide angle lenses, cheap adapters for taking advantage of it, same rolling shutter in its optional Super 35 crop mode. No brainer. Back to you FX30 fans, I will hold on to myself and stay calm. FX30 looks appealing due to AF and full HDMI. 🙂

  6. I just did a test with fast moving water from a fountain in AVCHD(24fps) vs. MP4(25fps) on a GX800. The MP4 blew away the AVCHD in this unrealistic situation. I filmed a wide scene of the river and neither failed, but the fountain on a 14mm up close was WAY to much for the AVCHD. I wonder if my hacked (moon T7) would have handled it because that's also AVCHD but a way higher bitrate? Here's a screen shot of FCPX of the worst frame:

    Will Twitter be Twitter?

Absolutely. One of the privacy challenges of data is when you are able to combine different types of data. Almost every useful (and private) thing that can be known about a person depends on being able to combine different types of data. Knowing if someone is rich or poor only tells you about their wealth. Knowing if someone buys lots of camera equipment only tells you about their interest in cameras. BUT, if you know both, then you can find the people who are poor and also buy lots of camera equipment, and now you can now know that not only are they poor and interested in cameras, but you can also deduce that they're probably mentally challenged in some way 😉 The more you know about a person the more that you can exploit their psychological weak points, which is why governments and big business love this stuff, because it gives them more power over us.

    Will Twitter be Twitter?

You're excused for not knowing about WeChat - it's not really known much outside China. Calling WeChat a "messaging app" is kind of like calling a smartphone a "portable telephone" - it's not technically incorrect and that's what it was at the start but it's so far from the truth as to be so misleading that it's worse than useless as a description. Here's the first paragraph from Wikipedia: It also does a bunch of other things too, like payments, booking restaurants / movie tickets, calling taxis, ordering food, etc. Workplaces use it to communicate with staff. It's used in China as the official vaccine passport. WeChat is kind of like Twitter + Facebook + Instagram + SMS + Apple Messages + Skype + YT + ApplePay / your credit card / cash + Uber + Uber Eats + lots of things that are done manually (aren't apps) outside China. The Chinese government loves it because it's highly censored and a valuable piece of their massive surveillance apparatus. I read a long article about it some years ago now that a foreigner living in China wrote about their life before and after getting their WeChat account. The account is hard to get I think because it has to link to bank accounts and other offical things, so they'd been living there without one for some time. Essentially they'd struggled to do day-to-day things in China without a WeChat account, and when they got it they tried doing everything with it and found that they could do almost everything they wanted to do just in the single app. Apparently lots of users kind of use WeChat like it's the operating system on their phone - they use their phones just like we do only they do everything inside WeChat rather than from lots of apps all written by different companies. If Musk can make Twitter into anything that even remotely compares to WeChat then $44B will look like the money spent buying a winning lottery ticket compared to collecting the prize. Assuming he doesn't screw it up of course. But either way he's guaranteed to piss off the people who like the status quo, which is what we're seeing. Silicone Valley types like to go fast and break stuff, and while they mostly get things wrong, they've also built almost all the cool stuff too, so we'll see.

    Canon R6 Mark II Announced

I think it's highly dependent on the situation. This article details the process to get the below shot - apparently these birds dive at around 25mph and even when using 10fps burst mode on a D4 most frames didn't even include the bird at all so it took about 720,000 photos to get a perfect one: In terms of if it matters or not, I find that in my own personal work my experience of shooting is highly dependent on if I feel that I'm getting footage I like. That might be different if I was merely trying to please a client in order to put food on the table and new lenses in the collection, but who knows - we're all different and keeping up morale and creativity is a personal thing.

  11. Here's a video showing some ARRI Alexa Classic footage upscaled to 8K with Topaz. It's in bits throughout the second half of the video. https://youtu.be/YJpQCSFZMTM (link won't expand, not sure why) TBH I thought the results looked quite mixed - some shots looked much higher resolution but other shots just looked the same (had the same 2K film-like rendering and noise) so I guess it depends on your tastes and input footage. This might be a better real-world test as it doesn't seem to be only the cherry-picked footage that gives great results.

  12. I agree that’s a great system. There is an adapter for EF to L mount that has a vnd but I’m not sure how it affects af. I use Xume magnetic filter rings for my vnds. They are very useful. I don’t know why they stopped making them.

  14. I've come to the same conclusion for now. I can't find better value than L Mount. What I would say is that if you haven't tried the Panasonic 1.8 lenses then you should. I really like them and they work well for both photo and video.

  15. This is a large reason I like the DJI wireless mic. I can have the wireless signal embedded in my video files, but the transmitter is constantly recording even while the camera isn't recording. So, I'll always have audio. It's been a manageable setup for my small 2-3 minute doco shoots. I can see it getting very unwieldy on longer pieces. It doesn't replace a timecode setup, but functionally speaking it accomplishes some of the same goals.

  16. I know a lot of buyers of the EOS R really complained about the lag. They had one on display in a store once and I picked it up and just panned from side to side while looking through the viewfinder; the lag was so bad it was the final nail in the coffin for the EOS R for me. I was truly in disbelief that anyone was willing to put up with it. I think at the end of the day I am probably the only one that notices the shots I missed or didn't get perfect while knowing the lag caused it. The only time when the client noticed as well was the ballerina shoot. She was giving me looks that made it clear she didn't know why I wasn't nailing her leg and arm placement mid leap. Honestly, I am probably just making it more than it is. If I did not rely on flash so heavily or shoot so many specific situations that require both flash lighting as well as precision then the lag wouldn't bother me as much. With sports you can just hold down the shutter so mirrorless is definitely capable of capturing peak action even with the lag. At events people are used to redos over someone blinking so that's not a big deal either. For 99% of my work, only I will know when I missed the exact moment I wanted due to the EVF lag so I can live with that.

  17. I just received today the CL60R. So far I was impressed by the build quality, the output, the very friendly buttons placement (and existance!), the app, the size, the weight, the price, the original design and also the silly box/case that came with. Seems like a company that's serious about their stuff. I also read that they have an EU office and check "locally" warranty claims.. Unfortunately it didn't work with a power bank I have. It turns on, but switches after half a second with a 65w. Maybe it needs an 80w.. First impressions positive. Still have to pass the test of time. I got it as a hair light and for the effects, in case I need them, so I wanted it extra portable.

    Will Twitter be Twitter?

I've heard he wants to take it in the direction of WeChat. If that's true, and he pulls it off, he'll make an absolute killing. There is definitely demand for many of the extra features that WeChat has that twitter doesn't, so it'll be a matter of implementation. Twitter seems to have been devoid of any serious innovation for quite a long time now.

  20. I've found that adjusting diopters can be really tricky because if you adjust them then your eye just adjusts to compensate, so your eyes kind of don't tell you when the diopter is adjusted wrong - you just end up with eye strain after a while and you don't really know why.

  21. I would not take the R5 on sales as a metric as I would guess that the R5 is the most sold R series model, so you get more on the used marked. Regarding the EVF latency I'm really not sure what to say and it is probably that some people adapt better than the others. One thing is for sure my two R5 and my one R5C behave exactly the same, but they are also configured the same. I was surprised how quickly I adjusted from 1Dx III OVS/mirror blackout to R5 EVF 20 fps (I use 90% ES). I have more keepers while tracking & panning with the R5 than the 1Dx III and this it is what it counts for me. This is why I never moved to the R3 as I prefer to have the 45mpix than the better EVF....

Better sound. It was a no-budget movie and while we had good equipment, we didn't have people who knew what they were doing. I don't fault them for messed up sound since they are just friends we handed the gear off to. I've been paid to do sound on other people's projects so I know what I'm doing there, but I was focused on directing and shooting. The best sound was from the times where I just put the mic on a stand and monitored the audio myself. I should have just done that the entire time. Script-wise there were things I wish I had kept in the script, but what's int he final film isn't bad. The original ending was more climactic and scary I think. There are a lot of little things that annoy me, like some of the sign replacement VFX shots, but they were done for free, so I can't complain too much, and it's better than what I could have done myself.

    Shoot Film Stills?

I just got back into film photography. Last month I did an Evil Dead inspired horror photo shoot. This is the first time I've done a conceptual photo shoot with a model. I resurrected my old 35mm Canon Rebel and bought a couple of lenses. This is shot with the Canon 28mm 1.8 (all wide open) on 35mm with Kodak Portra 800. I have some more horror themed photo shoots set up, and some pinup style shoots as well. I also recently got a Yashica Rookie TLR camera and some 120 film.

  24. @PannySVHS @John Matthews @canonlyme I've been meaning to do a codec test on my GX85, so might use this thread to motivate me to do it. Any suggestions for how / what to shoot? I'm thinking a prime lens stopped down so it's nice and sharp, potentially with a moving subject (assuming I can find a time when there's a bit of wind to make the trees nearby move a bit).

  25. I'm finding the GM1 in AVCHD 24p to perform better than the GX850 (very similar to the GX85) in terms of 1080p in MP4 or AVCHD. Of course my E-M1 ii down-sampled C4K blows them all away- no moiré, no aliasing as far as I can tell. I think it's worth the extra effort. If I add just the slightest bit of sharpening to the down-sampled h.265 image, it's practically indistinguishable side-by-side on my 4.5k iMac monitor, yet the files will be WAY smaller.

Great work, Tim. Some of your shots seem familiar. Do you have a Canonet QL17 Giii and have posted some of your shots on Flickr? I love the idea of processing my own film, but I don't have the space to do it. Have you ever used the Cafenol processing?
