    Shoot Film Stills?

@hansel thanks for the reply and the caffenol info. Eventually, I'll look into it more. I am still shooting some stills and I went a little crazy with cameras, but I never spent a lot on any one camera. So far my favorites are the Nikon FM, Minolta SRT 201 and XD11, and the Yashica FX-3 Super 2000... which is just a joy to shoot with. I also have a Canon Rebel G which is kinda neat, with super fast AF. And an Olympus OM2N which is a marvel of mechanics, and a half dozen other ones... but I'll probably end up keeping only a few of them. I was going to sell almost everything and buy an FM3A, but I haven't decided yet. I ended up shooting a dozen or so rolls before I sent any out to get processed/scanned. Here are a few of the ones that turned out okay...

    Shoot Film Stills?

Some people use their digital camera to "scan" negatives. If you go on the Moment website, or their YouTube channel, there are some articles/videos that explain the process. I think you can even use your phone. Going with one camera and a few lenses is the smart thing to do, but I went through a vintage lens buying phase a few years back, so I had a few old lenses from most of the major manufacturers. I made a rule that I'd only buy a camera if I had a lens for it. Needless to say, I now have too many cameras and lenses.

The two industry standards tools for dialogue clean up is iZotope RX and Cedar DNS, anybody doing this seriously professionally would have both. Brusfri is what I'd recommend in the past instead for people doing it casually with "no budget".

    Shoot Film Stills?

I just got back into film photography. Last month I did an Evil Dead inspired horror photo shoot. This is the first time I've done a conceptual photo shoot with a model. I resurrected my old 35mm Canon Rebel and bought a couple of lenses. This is shot with the Canon 28mm 1.8 (all wide open) on 35mm with Kodak Portra 800. I have some more horror themed photo shoots set up, and some pinup style shoots as well. I also recently got a Yashica Rookie TLR camera and some 120 film.

You pick one phrase and really pull it apart! What I meant was that I am happy with an APSC camera. I don't need full frame. I just wanted a great APSC camera and that is what I got. I wasn't saying that the S5 was no good in APSC mode was I? Sorry if that is what you thought I meant and got offended? It was not my intention. Is the FX30 the best APSC video camera out there? Nope. Does it suit my needs better than most other cameras out there? Yep. I have camera operated on two Netflix docs back on the FS7. Never had a complaint from Post production about it. But again, I never said the Vlog was bad did I?

Is this a camera thing? Are there forums out there with carpenters spending this much time and effort arguing about why their Makita drill is better than the others DEWALT drill? Two post in a row! 🤯

  8. I made a living shooting with two C100s and an Atomos Ninja Blade for my first five years as a freelancer. It's a nice image but I never used CLog because the limited codec, even coming from the Atomos, didn't hold up to grading very well and I often ended up with noisy footage. Also, I found that it was pretty difficult to monitor and expose properly; the newer Canon Cinema cameras let you apply a very accurate LUT on the LCD that is actually great to work with. I always shot in WideDR. Lastly, it's a bit of a noisy image compared to the newer cameras (or even my EOS-R from 2018), even at the base ISO of 850. All that being said, when exposed properly I thought that the images were really nice and good enough for professional use. They had a more neutral, less saturated look than what I am getting from my C70. Form factor was great and built-in NDs are so freeing. They will change the way you shoot. And the DPAF, even though it's only available in the center of the frame (I set a button so that I could toggle it on and off with ease), was surprisingly solid. I'd say it was even more reliable than what I have on the C70. One more thing to consider. These cameras have internal batteries that can only be changed at a Canon service center, which isn't cheap. I started hearing about other shooters having these batteries finally die on them, so they would have to re-enter all of their settings every time they turned on the camera. This hastened the departure of these two fine cameras from my collection!

  9. What about a C100II with an Atomos ninja star for 220mbps prores? Still 8 bit though but you do gain 422

I kind of cool to be able to share/scan film. I only do it analogue so cant share it, hmmm. I should figger out a way to do photos of the negatives... ...My dad had some F lenses so I kind of stuck with it.

  11. I love the C100. Still a very capable camera. I only sold it because I can't deliver FHD anymore, even 4K downsampled. The 8-bit is also a challenge and now that I'm more into grading I don't think I could go back to 8-bit. But the SOOC IQ still holds up even though it has Canons older CS which may look more dated than the more neutral CS of recent generations. For me personally, C300 mk2 would be the only older model I'd be able to do pro work with but if you're a hobbyist and looking for one of the best FHD cams, the C100mk2 or C300 would probably be near the top of that list. By the way, C100 isn't large at all, C300 has that awkward tall form factor though.

  12. Are you asking why there isn't an RF to RF adapter with a vND in it? That would be a bit of a challenge, because either it has no glass in it and therefore has to be zero thickness and can't fit an ND, or it isn't zero thickness and therefore needs glass in it to keep infinity focus and can't fit an ND as the glass would be in the way. The EF-RF adapter works because the adapter must have some thickness to align with the right distances for those mounts.

I bought my S1 with Vlog for 1100€ a year ago. A fantastic but slightly heavy camera. Best value I think.

  14. Yep tried it and it works, but it looks ugly! Internal or between the lens and body still best though, especially if changing lenses and they have different filter sizes. Sure you can use step up rings but there is also the lens hood issue and lens hood exist for a reason. At some focal lengths and with some filters, you can still use either the original or attach something aftermarket and some of my larger diameter VND’s have one ‘welded’ on and you rotate the entire hood/VND as a single entity. I’m not really sure why there are not more options for ‘between’ but I guess it’s more because of the electronic side than the mechanical one? I don’t really understand why Canon for instance make their RF Mount to EF lens only and don’t have an RF-RF because if I ever went to Canon, I would mostly like to use RF lenses. Just one more mystery in CameraLand! On another note, there is beginning to be a lot more chatter & speculation about something S line coming in the early Spring of ‘23 and it seems that Panasonic have officially confirmed this…

I actually recorded a ton of ADR for it, and I dumped it. Ive always loathed it ever since I made my first feature film, which also has a lot of ADR. You lose so much of the performance with ADR. I don't like bad location sound, but I'll take that over ADR. It's really more like prioritizing performance over technical perfection. I've been thinking for some time about remastering the soundtrack of my feature to include the original location sound. I've had much better success just doing the sound myself, even if it is kinda difficult juggling many tasks. Here's a short where I had zero help besides two actors (who are both in Chicken): There's even an exterior tracking dialog scene where I was having to hand hold the blimp below frame. I would use lavs for a scene/shot like that now, but I didn't have a wireless system at the time. There's one little audio goof that bothers me a bit, but I again had chosen the best performance take over the best sound take.

With the S5 you can record with no limit with 4K 25 8bit and 1080 10 bit. I do long form streaming with one. 2-3 hours non stop. I have the XLR unit with pro audio. It's the same price as the FX30 XLR unit. Anyway, great to have so many choices. just make sure you don't take Youtube influencers as gospel.

In Spain the S5 is 1835€ with 200€ cash back, so 1635€. The FX30 without the XLR adaptor is 2300€ which is quite a lot. Enough to buy a quality lens.

THIS! Twitter has been very stagnant for many years. So much missed opportunity! That other social media platforms have been exploiting. I do see Elon pushing hard to bring in lots of new innovations to evolve Twitter into something else new, a "Twitter 2.0"

These horror pics are insane. Just to keep this going. I shoot with an F2 and a F100 both Nikon in BW with Hp5 from a big roll or any Colour film I can find thst is cheap. I alternate between the two cameras and basically only use them when I am on vacation. @mercer because you asked about caffenol. Thats how I do it. It works pretty well and you can just dump it. you can also push two stops without much trouble depending on what you are after. Colour film has become crazy expensive and my fridge stock is nearly dried up. Apparently its because china is hardly doing the chemicals anymore or something. 14,-€ Colour film my ass...

  20. Yes. I think I need to redo the test. Also, I think I need to transcode to Prores first because FCPX is not liking AVCHD on my M1... not the first time, but it looks bad.
    1 point
  21. Terribly sorry. Too late to edit the previous post. I accidentally set mislabeled the image... the image on the right should be 59.98fps not 25fps. I might have to do the test again. Sorry.

  22. I just did a test with fast moving water from a fountain in AVCHD(24fps) vs. MP4(25fps) on a GX800. The MP4 blew away the AVCHD in this unrealistic situation. I filmed a wide scene of the river and neither failed, but the fountain on a 14mm up close was WAY to much for the AVCHD. I wonder if my hacked (moon T7) would have handled it because that's also AVCHD but a way higher bitrate? Here's a screen shot of FCPX of the worst frame:

  23. That's an incredible shot and even more interesting backstory. 4200hrs and 720K photos. I am definitely not shooting anything that requires that kind of dedication or precision. For me its really just a matter of being my own worst critic, even though it is for a client shoot, I still know when I am not getting the shots I was getting with an OVF. Now these are definitely great examples of where timing was key and where you couldn't use burst mode to create the shot due to the flash recycle limitations. Maybe it is like you and @kye are saying; I only have a few thousand images with the R5 so far and most of them don't require precision or timing so it might just be a matter of getting used to it. Shutter lag didn't even cross my mind, it could be a combination of EVF and shutter lag for my R5. Or it is still possible my R5 simply has more lag than it is supposed to; my brief R7 tests show a big improvement. CPS didn't seem to have an official test for this, in the ticket notes all they said was that they compared it to another R5.....no help at all if the second R5 they compared it to had the same problem. I definitely don't need a 1DXIII for the things I shoot, my 5DIV was more than adequate for everything I threw at it.

  25. Not sure specially. I flit between ‘The Rule’ and overcrank it other times… Ideally, I’d stick to using it but with internal ND or something between the lens and body, anything else is a faff! Magnetic VND’s? PITA for my use case 🤪

  27. I agree that’s a great system. There is an adapter for EF to L mount that has a vnd but I’m not sure how it affects af. I use Xume magnetic filter rings for my vnds. They are very useful. I don’t know why they stopped making them.

  28. It's not that I think Twitter was perfect before, or that there isn't room to innovate, it's that I think Elon Musk is an idiot that is obsessed with the platform and shitposting. When you are among the wealthiest people in the world you can afford to hire geniuses to build companies like Tesla and SpaceX. Elon is not an engineer, he's not deep in the bowels of those companies leading the charge in innovation and development. He's just a guy that comes from a rich family that used his money to facilitate it. He was smart enough to understand his limitations when it came to these things, but when it comes to Twitter the same can't be said. It seems clear that he is deeply hands-on with everything going on with Twitter right now, which has resulted in internal chaos, plummeting ad revenue, and embarrassing public outbursts. Being an erratic asshole that antagonizes a large part of the user base and its advertisers isn't an intelligent thing to do, particularly when you've spent 44 BILLION DOLLARS on a company that wasn't profitable. He can pretend it is advertisers wanting to silence "free speech" (no Elon, you're just an asshole and brands don't want to be associated with a site that seems poised to let a bunch of racists and fascists back on it) and whatever other excuse he wants to make, but ultimately the dude just isn't nearly as smart as he (and millions of others) think he is. When you are that obscenely wealthy it is pretty easy to accumulate more wealth by leveraging your assets regardless of your business acumen or intelligence. Elon is just the latest example of that. It's time for society to stop putting these people on a pedestal and thinking they're smart.

I think this is an aspect that gets overlooked by people that aren't out filming on their feet all day. My own equivalent is that I have to be able to hold my camera in-hand for a whole day, only resting during breaks for food and bathrooms etc. If it's not in my hand then it's not ready to film and so I miss shots and we all know that even barely usable footage is still better than the shot you didn't get. This is one of the reasons I sold my Sigma 18-35, it was just too heavy.

@mercer fun fun fun! I took analog photography in highschool and have enjoyed the process ever since. I started on the Olympus Trip 35 and still mostly use that one even though I've got more advanced SLRs today. These old selenium light metered point-and-shoots are just too much fun. I just use the 4 focus zones; one guy, two guys, three guys and mountain. I guess the technical terms are; headshot (1m/3'), twoshot (1.5m/5'), group shot (3m/10') and infinity. 🤷‍♂️ If I need to, I snap out of automatic iris and shoot aperture priority. As far as I know, the camera choses either a 1/40 or 1/200 shutter. Limiting, but fun and simple. I almost exclusively shoot B&W, that is enough colors for me. I've been mostly using Kodak TMAX 400, although I prefer Tri-X. Ilford Delta or HP5 are solid, cheaper options. All readily available, at least where I am at. And if u ever use filmstock emulations on your digital footage, why not try out your favorite on analog? 🙂 I develop at home, with a Paterson Changing Bag and Developer Tank. I either use Kodak D-76 or Cinestill DF96 Monobath, the latter which is one bath for both developing and fix, although because of the grain structure, TMAX film needs double the bath time in that chemical. I use an Epson V600 flatbed scanner. If I had the space for a dark room I'd probably enlarge as well. I'll provide some samples from Kodak TMAX 400 in the Olympus Trip 35. Scratches and dust included.

I’ve been waiting years for a good Stereo 3D DSLR or mirrorless. My grandfather gave me this Zeiss pocket viewer for 35mm transparencies from the 1960’s: So I started shooting stereo pairs in the 1970’s, static scenes with one camera. The results with Kodachrome & Ektachrome in this viewer are amazing! It also works well with slides in plastic pages on a light box: I often shoot 3D pairs on the Fuji X-T3, static scenes, hand-held or on a slider. I use StereoPhoto Maker (free, Windows) to automatically align the left & right shots, and save to a stereo file. Many video projectors will display 3D MPO stills with glasses, and my Sony works passably well on a big 10 ft wide screen. But it’s still not as good as 35mm slides in my Zeiss viewer!
