  1. So one of the youtubers shares the following rumors: S5mk2 - 2000$ S5mk2X - 2200$ .. and it has 6k60 FF! If that will appear to be true (only 5 more hours till we can verify that), I say we have a big win for Panasonic. 6k60p camera with PDAF, very good IBIS and all the Panasonic goodies for only 2200$ frankly sound very tempting.

  2. I won't post the video because I know Andrew really, really doesn't like him, but Tony Northrup tested the S5II's autofocus with the Sigma EF to L adapter and it worked really well.

  3. Trying to find a flaw in trading my: S1H, S5 and pair of S1R’s for 3x S5ii’s… A. Would have preferred a tilt screen but it’s not a dealbreaker. B. Will I miss not having 47mp stills? Probably not… C. Other than the stealthy black aesthetic, does the X model (not available until May and too late for me for this year anyway) have anything over the standard model that I would want or need? Doesn’t appear so as I thought it might have a CF Express slot but the internal ProRes is limited to 1080. ‘Only’ 200 mbps (or is that mbs…but who cares) which is fine for me. I’m away at the moment but I think 3x bodies plus 2x battery grips is going to suit me… Already have: Sigma 16-28 and 28-70 f2.8 compact zooms for video plus; 20, 35 and 85 f1.4’s for stills. I also have the f4 24-105 if I do need longer. I think it’s looking healthy for L Mount 👍

  4. GH5 has a 1.4x mode as extele option, giving S16 sensor gate in 4k. It also offers a 2x Digi zoom giving a 2.5K wide image with the image circle of 2/3 inch broadcast. This is some nifty flexibility. S1 offers S35 gate in 4K as we know, but also 3.1x crop in HD, giving us the gate size of approx 16mm film. I adapted an Angie 75mm c-mount lens in S35 mode. For S16 lenses it' 3.1x crop in Hd only. It's a start but would be nice to have much more flexibility with that beautiful sensor. I have a 35mm c-mount lens which covers S35 perfectly. I need to give it more exposure for sure! Also minimizes the rolling shutter to 15ms.

    Sony vs Panny

After the powerfull S5mk2 presentation I just wanted to summarize some cons and pros for both systems from perspective of a guy who owns a Sony camera but switched from GH5 mainly cos of the reliabilty issiues with Panny AF. Now ofc we need to take into account that S5mk2 is a baseline new Panny camera with PDAF. They will defeintly introduce updates to the rest of their lineup and it would be much easier to make up your mind in the future when we see all those camers. Nevertheless I just want to lay out what I already can see at the current market position. So this comparison not gonna be very camera specific as obviosly A7S3 beats S5mk2 in terms of rolling shutter and FF resolutions cos Sony is a leader of camera sensor production and they keep their best and newest sensors for themselfs exclusively. Ok lets do it: Sony Pros: - Lens lineup. Yes, an obvious one. E-mount has the strongest lens selection, with tons of options from a plethora of manufcatures. Tamron zooms are awesome and unique. Samyang primes are tiny, awesome and affordable. Sony lenses are quite compact themselfs (compared to Pany its noticable). And they all work more or less the same on Sony cameras. - Compactness of the system. You can have a very compact kit with a Sony camera. Both their bodies and lens selection lets you build a very manageable system in terms of size and weight - Recorded gyro data. That is a pretty cool option. I am currently experimenting with it using GyroFlow which is a much better software than the infamous CatsalystBrowse, I will share my experience on the topic later. Gyroflow already has a Resolve plug-in but its not that great. Future iterations might improve significantly. - Sony will always have the latest Sony sensor tech and that is a big factor of their sucesess And I kind of ran of out pros at this moment 🙂 Cons: - FIRMWARE updates almost never happen. Thats a very big downside for me cos I hate when companies treat their customers mostly like milking moneybags . And that seems to be a strategy here. - A very limited amount of video specific tools. Maybe you want false color, waveforms, shutter angle, opengate recording? Well keep dreaming or buy a Sony higher tier "proper cinema camera" for that. I guess FX3\30 does not classify as one. - IBIS is meeh unless you are using post-gyro stabilization which works only in specific modes (doesnt work in S&Q for example or 120fps) - Body ergomonics is meeh - HDMI output feed is terribly desgined. Panasonic wins here by a mile. In general Sony makes an impression of company that is not vert keen on listenning to their customers feedback and they would prefer to milk all of them to the last drop than to make them happy giving some relevant camera updates and showing some feedback and ability to listen. And for me its an important trait that I react to. Panny boy: Pros: - the new IBIS is just FUCKING AMAZING! Bravo Panny! You took it to the next level truly. - Panny update policy is one of the best in the buisness. You can rest assured that your camera will get relivant updates for the next 2-3 years or more with some sudden surpises along the way. - Panny ergonomics is quite good - their HDMI output layout is great! - All the video orieneted features that Sony is missing, Panny is actively adding to their cameras Cons: - Lenses. The obvious one. They are big, they are expensive, they are limited in variety. But.. their quality is quite good. Focus breathing compensation build-in is very appreciated. And Sigma lenses giving the system some lighter and cheaper options in nice. So its not all that bad but Sony still wins here quite firmly. - no PDAF.. haha. Well that in the past now. Huge con elliminated finally What else? Well we need to see the all new lineup refreshed to make an adequte judgement here so the time will tell. But for now Panasonic just raised from the underdog to a strong contender in my eyes. --- Border line. For now purely as a company Panny wins in my eyes. They are just more user friendly and video oriented and innovative beyond just sensor tech innovation.

  6. The killer IBIS is the feature of this camera that everyone will be chasing. Personally, I think e-mount will have technical limitations to match. After watching Gerald Undone, I'm guessing the AF will simply be good enough that no one will care anymore. Finally, l-mount is relatively open for all manufacturers to join... unlike the recent Canon bullshit... I see some people moving to l-mount soon. This camera is going to sell like gangbusters IMO.

  7. I think it is very much competitive with the cameras above. PDAF, fantstic IBIS and lots of pro-video tools. Really glad they have finally made such a camera. I agree with Gerald that in terms of value for money S52 is the next A7III. I hope Panasonic sells a shit tone of them and more lens mafucatures will enter L-mount alliance.

  8. hey, i am doing the same type of shoots with my a7IV and have never had a problem with overheating. I think you will be just fine with this camera. Sincerely, the only down size of a74 vs fx30 is the rolling shutter which sometimes can be annoying for panning and camera moves. Other than that, there is no real difference in the work you'll be doing. And with the a74 you'll get full frame and the photo side. Again, had no problem with overheating and was doing shots in Africa in December last year. Check out my film and if the quality suits you, go for this camera. My film here:

  9. I'm always curious about 16mm lenses as I'm always looking for new ways to use my grandfather's Bell & Howell set of lenses: 4", 1" and .7" trio, pictured here next to my GH6. I would like to get them cleaned and re-lubed, but I'm not sure about how to go about that.

  10. Keep in mind that those same YouTubers will keep saying over and over again how they aren't being paid for the review... but also that they all know that if they don't say mostly nice things about the camera, they won't get free flights/hotels in Japan, a loaner camera + $20k in loaner lenses, or have a camera to make a video before launch day the next time. The reviews are biased and are part of the Panasonic sales strategy. Wait until real users and smaller channels start receiving the camera. Right now, it's all part of a hype machine to drive preorders. Panasonic have a long history of delivering excellent hybrid cameras and there's no reason to think that this one will be any different, but NEVER trust launch day YouTube reviews for any camera.

  11. Its real - I got a newsletter from Vistek with pre-order details for S5II & S5IIX... Feb 24 delivery date. I don't know anything about AF though... nor do I know of the real differences between the first gen and second gen. Wait for the reviews I guess. Editted to add: Vistek is a camera store here in Canada, its on par to Henrys (but there are way more Henrys than Vistek). Imagine - Bestbuy only for camera equipment (photo & video).

  12. Well I just bought a 5D mkii, with a view to getting another, to relaunch myself into the wedding stills trade this year. Fairly impressed so far...

  13. I personally dont care if the current Panny AF is not 100% perfect. They will iron out all the quirks asap and release a firmware update. If that happend for Sony I would be serisouly worried though 🙂

  14. It looks like you will be able to upgrade the S5II to get some (but not all) of the features of the S5II X. Also Geeky Nerdy Tech is in Australia, where it's summer, and says there's no overheating issues, which is nice.

  16. Now someone please (Megadap?) make a good AF adapter for e-mount to l-mount 🙏 I have a feeling that the next camera release from Pana could be my perfect camera, but I dont want to switch lenses at all 🤧 I love my emount lens collection..

  17. Its kind of cool to see that Pana have sent a review copy to Camera conspiracies 🤤 The fact that new Pana AF is beating the shit out of Canon AF is kind of amazing. Did not expect that.

  18. Holy shit - looks like Panasonic have a winner, at least for the price. If only Panasonic had PDAF since the beginning of the L mount, market could be very different now. Looks like @MrSMW will be a happy camper. And, if I had the intention to move to FF, as an amateur, this could be my number one choice.

  19. Saw that mention for a smaller camera, and hope that it would be another GX. But my bets are on a G100 sucessor - that`s the way that I saw Panny going with m43 - high end video (GH line) and vlogger. The 9mm (amazing lens, one that I would buy in a heartbeat if I've stayed with the format) is target for the second crowd. The revamped 12-35 is for the first (albeit good for stills too). But before these two lenses, only the f/1.7 zooms. I need an EVF - I use my cameras both for stills and video. For the same reason, like rangefinder-like cameras, because they attract much less attention. And looks like they are disspearing - no GXs from Panasonic, the Pens are dead, only have the Fujifilm X-E4 (which was the camera I was expecting most but...no IBIS and much less controls than the X-E3, it was a replacement for the X-A line, for me a big deception) and the Sony A7C (interesting size and looks, but with a terrible EVF, bigger lenses, and I doubt that will be a A7C MK II). I'm for small size too. Gone to Fuji since was the almost only way to go (other APS-C mirrorless lines are a joke - the Canon R7 is very interesting, but almost no lenses and DSLR style). Fuji zooms are very good and comparable in size with the m43 zooms in size, weight and price - but a tad larger for my tastes (that's why I never had a Oly Pro zoom in the past). Hope that more lenses like the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 appears - large aperture, smaller size, good plastics to keep the weight down. No interest in FF for the moment. Except the A7C, all bodies are "look at me I'm (pretending) to be a pro" DSLR style, and zooms are much bigger. They could get my attention if the make small zooms with f/4 or 5.6 with very good quality - which I doubt that would appear. Yeah, you can get small primes, but (specially for travel) I need zooms. WIll always love m43 - my Pen E-P1 and GH2 will never be sold, as the Panny 12-32 and the Oly 45mm f/1.8. Miss the 45-175 zoom (is exactly the kind of zoom that I'm talking about - small, light, good IQ).

  20. @Amazeballs i gave your post a lol, but because of an overflow of ridicilous infantile joy! It's a "like" of course! 2200 for that kind of goodies. I will buy that thing, if it delivers that and if it manages to keep Panasonics other high qualities regarding image quality and usuability. After purchase i will feel like a thief. Cannot be true. Rather something like 4k60 with S35 crop, same sensor as A7mk3, which the S line sensor seemingly was an alteration of and all that for no less than 2800 Euro. 2200 is ridiciously low, if without caveheats.

  21. That would be cool. I presume that to take advantage of it one would need all L mount lenses and preferably Panasonic-made lenses?

    Panasonic GH6

Good to know. I'll try to delete it and redownload it. No I was just using regular photo mode. Davinci can for sure handle DNGs, I wish they would update to handle RW2 files though ..

  23. There are plenty of cheap $10-ish c to L adapters like this one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264634742093 Specific crop modes such as the BM camera have is another matter though.

  24. I really don't get the reason why people who have FF cameras are so disturbed by the mere existence of M43. Can't we let M43 be M43 and FF be FF- it's all good. If you like the image format and size, great! Why does one have to be inferior? They both do things that the other cannot do. I think there's the inconvenience. It would seem that people want simplified answers- bigger sensor, more megapixels, high bit rate, etc. I'm not saying those thing don't matter, but there are other things too. Cameras have ergonomics, exposure tools, ports, EVF's, image fidelity, etc. None of that is "Full-Frame" or "xx megapixels" or "intra-frame compression". So many cameras produce great images these days, even good enough for Hollywood. After, it becomes the best tool for the job and needs.

  27. Forgot about the c100 mkII as well - DPAF, ND's, Clog, XLR audio, 60p and so on. When prices hit $500 or so, I'll give it a look. 1080p is plenty for social and most deliverables. But everything is just so easy with the a7sIII, I haven't given many video cameras a second look in a couple years. I'm always thinking the grass is greener with the BM Micro. So many cool options, I just don't like having a lot of gear sitting around that doesn't get used. Chris

  29. The F3 has one of the best posts vs image quality ratios on youtube. It keeps me looking for new pieces showing off the magic coming from this beauty instead of using my own F3. It´s a lazy way of enjoying this camera. It´s an easy way to do so 🙂 Is´nt it:

  30. In the US there is a 12 month grace period. You can file after something's been on the market, the patent has a filing date in 2008, but a 'priority date' in 2007. If nothing else you have time to prove that your product is viable before going through the pain and expense of a patent. RED's patent is designated with a "U" preceding the number which stands for 'utility' vs a 'design' patent. Utility patents give their owners broad protection over the use of a new and useful process and they are allowed to invent on top of existing technology which counts as 'prior art.' They disclosed a lot of prior art too referencing other video cameras on the market and stills. Visually lossless compressed raw is certainly not an unpatentable 'abstract idea' to me either because you do have options in camera to choose the amount of compression. The camera is acting on the data physically compressing it in camera. I think the problem is that RED chose to patent it in the first place, as opposed to other companies in the past getting together to form a standards group like JPEG. JPEG is also based on patents too I believe, the companies that helped form it have allowed it to exist outside of patented IP.

  31. I think your biggest challenge with the Micro would be finding SD cards that work. There are a few; the cheap Kingston ones have worked for many people but mine only lasted a year; I then spent the big bucks on two Angelbird 128 gig cards and those have been rock-solid reliable so far. I also have a stash of the original Sandisk cards that were approved for this camera but there's always the worry of what to do when cards start to fail. At that point I'd switch to an external monitor/recorder and just shoot ProRes.
