  1. It's not my video. However, it was shot at 35mm in APSC mode. Their written review is worth a read as well. There are a few interesting observations in there. Google Translate if you don't speak German. https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Panasonic-S5-II-mit-Phasen-Autofokus-in-der-Videopraxis--Ueberflieger-in-der-2-000-Euro-Klasse---alles-.html

  3. Despite moving on from Canon years ago I still have a hankering for a 1DC. I have absolutely no need or place for one but having used one a couple of times and still have some 4K Log footage stored, I look at it from time to time and it still impresses me. I'd still be interested to see how a Sigma 18-35mm would fair on it, I do remember once using it paired with a Speedbooster Ultra on a GH5S making it roughly 1.27x crop with a touch of vignetting in the corners. 1.3x in DCI 4K mode on the 1DC must be do-able then!

  5. Yes, if EF lenses are working well when adapted then this camera is a no brainer for a lot of people, including me.

  6. The USB-SSD recording and IP streaming are also unique to the S5iiX. If there's any chance you'll someday want the $200 raw upgrade to the regular S5ii, it's worth just ponying up at the start and getting the S5iiX for these extras IMO.

  7. 10000000% agreed! And it is not just FX6 owners, but also aspiring FX6 owners. Lots of buyers of an a7S / a7 / a6x00 / etc who get those and aspire to one day have "a pro camera", and get a mirrorless stills camera with the same mount as what they know they'll one day upgrade to. As much as I like this new S5mk2 release, and think it is awesome, it's nearly impossible for me to justify getting when a) I have a FS7 with an E Mount, and b) if/when I get another pro camera (in a few years time, no rush. I want the supply shortages to end, and for them to depreciate in cost), it will most likely be a FX6! (or maaaaaybe FX9, anyway it is definitely an E Mount!) This was the biggest issue with MFT Mount as well, when it became clear there would never ever be an AF100 replacement. At least BMD kinda sort of filled that hole (in a different way) for a while with their MFT cameras. Panasonic is seriously crippling themselves by not having an "EVA2 with a L Mount". People need to know there is an upgrade path for them well beyond the S5mk2. Also true 😞

  9. Gents! I’m most likely preordering the S5II. The videos that compare to Sony seem like Panny is the go to!

    Sony vs Panny

If we are talking in general terms of Panasonic v Sony rather than being camera specific, while the new S5II is a step in the right direction, Panasonic are not even playing in the same ballpark as Sony for anyone more than a hobbyist. Sony are dominating the market and Panasonic really need to start producing some exceptional cameras both at the FX3/FX30 end and to rival the FX6 if they want to compete in the next few years. Most professionals are not going to jump ship from a system of bodies and lenses unless they are given a very good reason to. Panasonic need to produce an FX6 which is as good or better than Sony's but at a much lower price for people to even consider changing system. Same for FX3 and FX30 level cameras. For enthusiasts or people who do their own projects then it's less of an issue to swap systems but to people who spend a fair amount of money on equipment, throwing that all away for a 1-5% improvement when pixel peeping is not going to happen. Panasonic have waited too long to get up to speed and without a proper video camera like the Fx6 I can't see them growing too quickly in markets other than hobbyists.

  14. There is plenty of need for an EVA replacement in a slightly smaller body. Firstly, it's going to be hard cramming all that in to a thin mirrorless body. Sure, you could do something like the Pocket6K Pro but if you are aiming for the next level up user, the professional, most do not like the form factor of DSLR's for video. Panasonic needs a Sony FX6 level camera in their lineup. The FX6 is hugely popular for any work where an Alexa Mini is too expensive or not required. FX6's are everywhere and easily dominate the Pro market globally. Why wouldn't Panasonic want a slice of that pie? Do you know what most Camera Operators that shoot on FX6's also buy? FX30's and FX3's as B Cameras. You know what else these operators are starting to purchase? Genuine lenses for Autofocus. Lots of shooters doing sport content (which is a huge market) are now wanting AF as the new systems are very reliable. For the best performance, they are buying genuine lenses. So, with an FX6 purchase, you will likely get an FX3 or FX30 purchase AND two or three G Master lenses. Panasonic would be absolutely crazy to not chase that market.

  15. Exactly!! These early first "reviews" all say that AF performance is very very close, with Sony only marginally ahead. (and with Sony being by far a bigger sponsor overall, you have to wonder how much unconscious bias might be going on....) And we all know it often takes a lot of time to get the most out of an AF system, to know all its quirks and settings. Thousands of people have been spending hundreds of thousands of hours using and figuring out Sony AF over the last few years. While the S5mk2 isn't even shipping yet. Wouldn't shock me if after a year of people using the S5mk2, learning and understanding it, that perhaps Panasonic AF comes out on top as #1 now. But anyway... why even care, we're arguing over the last 0.1% of AF performance? We're splitting hairs. I think it is time to agree there are now more important things to consider about a camera than the AF! Yup, Canon made a move for their short term benefit that will long term harm them. Bingo! When Panasonic's AF is beating what was just a few short years ago the "amazingly best AF" from Canon, then we know these AF debates can be over. Who cares who exactly has the number one spot in this exact moment in time, be it Sony/Canon/Nikon/Panasonic/whoever? It's like caring if the Nikon D4 or Canon 1D X has the better AF for photography?? That kind of debate between photographers ceased to be relevant to 99% of us! And now it looks like we're reaching that point in autofocus for videographers as well?

    Sony vs Panny

Panasonic (or at least their partner: Sigma) need to play this same game. Bring out an absurdly cheap couple of lenses. Don't care what they are, just make them cheap and preferably more than one. Could be a 40mm f4 pancake for $199. Could be a 35mm to 105mm variable f-stop zoom for $250 Could be a 50mm f2 for $199 Could be a 35mm f2.8 for $299 Whatever, just make a couple of them asap! To draw people into their L Mount ecosystem. As they have to play the same game the other companies are playing. Nikon/Canon/Sony/Fujifilm/Pentax all do this. (yes, even Pentax!) Pentax 50mm f1.8 = $97 Pentax 35mm f/2.4 = $117 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 = $125 Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens = $129 Nikon 50mm f/1.8D = $132 Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8G = $180 Pentax 40mm f/2.8 (it's an amazing pancake lens!!!) = $230 Nikon DX Macro Lens 40mm f/2.8G = $280 Nikon 28mm f/2.8D = $287 Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 = $149 Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 = $179 Fujifilm 35mm f/2 = $199 Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 = $248 Sony E 16mm f/2.8 (pancake!) = $248 Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 = $249 Nikon Z 40mm f/2 = $277 Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8 = $277 They need to do the same too for camera bodies, how else can they compete with the gateway drugs of: Nikon Z5, Canon EOS RP, Sony a7C / a7mk3 ?? Let alone the other gateway drugs they all have of APS-C cameras for dirt dirt cheap: Nikon Z30, Canon R10, Sony a6x00 Because as fantastically great as Panasonic MFT cameras are, they're unfortunately not a smooth pathway into the L Mount Ecosystem. Am glad to hear that Panasonic will keep around the S5mk1, as that's a smart move. Because as I'll say over and over again, Panasonic (and Sigma & Lecia) **NEED** a gateway drug (camera) into the L Mount system. Sony does this by keeping around their older a7mk3 (and even a7mk2!!) at cheaper prices. If Panasonic had the S5mk1 available for US$1.7K , then dropping down in the second half of this year to US$1.5K, then the S5 would do well at serving that critical niche point. (and just keep on dropping it down by another $100 each year, until five years from now it's being sold for US$1.1K brand new)

  17. Looks like a really excellent camera. A nice new feature is ability to burn in up to 10 user LUTs in both JPEG stills and video.

  18. Again, I won't post the video cause I know Andrew isn't fond of him, but Kai W. also did tests with the Sigma adapter and Canon EF lenses and the results were excellent. It's at about the 22 minute mark in his video. Quite impressive.

Image quality is FX6 territory on Pannyboy, except rolling shutter. For image lovers with the willingnes to color grade, Pannyboy is fantastic. For ff 4k60 and 120 the Sonys are the way to go.

  20. Keep in mind that those same YouTubers will keep saying over and over again how they aren't being paid for the review... but also that they all know that if they don't say mostly nice things about the camera, they won't get free flights/hotels in Japan, a loaner camera + $20k in loaner lenses, or have a camera to make a video before launch day the next time. The reviews are biased and are part of the Panasonic sales strategy. Wait until real users and smaller channels start receiving the camera. Right now, it's all part of a hype machine to drive preorders. Panasonic have a long history of delivering excellent hybrid cameras and there's no reason to think that this one will be any different, but NEVER trust launch day YouTube reviews for any camera.

  21. It looks like you will be able to upgrade the S5II to get some (but not all) of the features of the S5II X. Also Geeky Nerdy Tech is in Australia, where it's summer, and says there's no overheating issues, which is nice.

  22. Yep, that is the only consideration to make. For just 200 more, the S5 II X seems to be the best way to go. I honestly would have expected them to have external raw options in the S5 II since the s5 already has prores and b-raw support.

  24. It is a pitty that because of these brand fanatics, such as Fuji fan boys, Canons fan boys, Sony, Black MAgic, cinematic extremists and such, inovative camera manufactors such as Samsung, for a period, dont achive success. Despite all the money they invest, and their products being so superior. Now Samsung NX owners are stucked 😞 , because they cannot adapt their gear to any new camera body to come, from other brands. Dont forget this video: If i owned a Pro BMC 6K I would be ashamed 😞 1080p crushing 6k?!?!?! Crazy world

  26. But my problems with the "alliance" actually does not apply to every other camera manufacturer. When you buy a camera body and native lenses from that camera maker you will get the best user experience; I think we both agree on that. I think we also both agree that both Sony and Canon produce every lens you could possibly need in your collection. Notice I said "need" not want. My problem with the alliance is that if you buy an L mount camera each individual vendor has a limited lens selection meaning you will have a higher chance of needing something from another vendor which may not perform as well as the native lens you need that doesn't exist. If you take the marketing hype from the alliance at face value then it is easy to assume that you will get a native lens experience from any lens maker in the alliance. This is in contrast to buying a Canon or Sony body then buying a 3rd party lens. Most people I know who bought 3rd party lenses for their Canon/Sony bodies were due to cost not due to lens availability from their chosen vendor. I see the alliance the same way I saw the Canon R5 overheating fiasco; Canon heavily marketed the R5 as a very capable video camera when in reality it was not fit for purpose due to overheating. The alliance still markets heavily to consumers that any lens in the alliance will meet the user's expectations when mounted to any L mount camera body. It is easy to extrapolate that into thinking any lens in the alliance will perform the same as native lenses from the individual makers. The thing is my purchasing decision was far from the minority here when you look at market share; for 2021 all of the alliance members combined market share was less than 11% with Panasonic taking 4.4% of that. When you take out non alliance members, DSLRs, MFTs, etc. the total L mount market share is probably less than 5% and it is only that high thanks to Panasonic's 4.4% contribution and that is assuming Panny owners are buying L mount lenses vs adapters and taking an educated guess at Panny's Point and Shoot numbers. Of course, I wish the alliance well, I am a consumer just like everyone else and more choice is always a good thing but an alliance whose members are competing with each other and impacting the user experience for the purpose of advancing their own brand is a dead alliance in my book. IMO a real alliance would have been one where they all collaborated on lenses and released non vendor branded lenses where every member made a percentage of the profit from lens sales. That would have ensured maximum compatibility regardless of camera body manufacturer and given them all incentive to provide strict adherence to the specs. Of course, that type of alliance only exists alongside fairy tales and unicorns when you are talking about for profit corporations. But you are just proving my point, Canon has literally every lens I need and adapted EF lenses including 3rd party EF lenses work just as flawlessly for me as native RF lenses. With that said, the one impact it did have on me was I decided not to get the Viltrox speedbooster for the R7. Even if I got my hands on one there was a risk that a future FW update would disable it so I didn't want to take the risk. So was it an annoyance; absolutely, but it was a nice to have not a necessity. All of this is strictly my opinion, I don't expect it to be shared by anyone else (although the market share numbers show it is shared by nearly everyone else 😄) but I did feel I should provide context behind how I reached my conclusions. Anyway, it definitely was not my intention to hijack this thread 🤣, I did forget two entries on my wish list for the R7 and R6II that would help make them the perfect cameras: Dual Native ISO - The S5's second native ISO is 4000 and I found that incredibly useful in low light. The R7 doesn't have dual native ISO and I don't think the R6II does either Global Shutter - While we are dreaming I might as well add this one to my list. I agree with you if you do not already own tons of Canon EF glass, but for those of us that do, its great to just have to buy one of Canon's recent bodies and every EF and EF-S lens you already own work just like it did with the EF mount. With that said, it would be very mentally difficult for me to go buy a brand new EF lens today knowing the mount has reached its end of life, but the adapters are a great stopgap for lenses that are still optically excellent and still perform like the day I got them. EF lenses even have some advantages over the RF lenses such as speedboosters, drop in ND filters, etc.
