  1. I really feel fleeced by Panasonic on this. To release this so soon after the GH6 - why was this new PDAF added to the GH6?? Come onnnnn

  2. I almost did the same thing ! But I sent back the R5 and kept all my L mount lenses. The S1 (and S5) is great , yes the AF is very bad but IBIS and image quality are very good. I still have my GH6 but I'm very tempted to sell it before it loses it's value, I agree the it is somewhat overpriced and beside of very nice colours I don't like the image quality so much for some reasons. But it's the only Panasonic camera with 4K 120fps, is it why I maybe not ready to part with it. I never had the R6 or the R6II but for me the R5 had the advantages of 4K 60 and 120fps without crop compared to the S5II. The R6II has no crop in 4K 60fps but I still prefer what I've seen of the S5 II, even if the R5 and R6 were at the same price. The S5 II could be my favorite camera since my NX1. But if Panasonic adds 4K60/120fps for the S1II, it will be my perfect camera.

  3. After deciding going full Canon this summer, now this! I have already investing in RF (3 lenses, 3 adapters and an R7) and I am now split if I have to sell everything and move to Pana.. R6mkII is still 3.200€ here, so is a no go for me for a middling hybrid, pricing of the Pana cameras seem just right and I am really impressed of what I have seen already. If the EF adapter works well, I seriously don't see why not most choose these cameras and slowly built their L lenses collection. That X camera seems like an amazing deal whatsoever.. Well done Panny.. GH6 and everything else seems a bit overpriced now.. don't they? Can anyone point me at any advantages the R6mkII have at this point? The camera is not out yet and we see just some marginal differences in IBIS and AF, I am positive they will be fixed in no time.. The active cooling is incredible at this price point. It will damage Fuji sales as well I believe. I do love the color science so far. I haven't pixel peep or anything, really, but I just like what I am seeing.. ..just..WOW Panny!

  4. I think you'll be very happy with the S5II. Looks like a great hybrid camera on paper. I wonder wether Panasonic will be able to add timecode input vie the mic minijack in a firmware update like is possible on the BMD Pocket cameras? Seems like a strange omission especially in the X model considering it is obviously aimed at the more professional user. Lack of TC makes it a non option for many and seems like a fairy simple feature to implement but then I'm no engineer.

  6. The 24-105 is pretty nice. For video high resolving. Built is good. I don´t like the manual focus. When focussing manually with my S1 the lens it shows little steps during focus transition. It´s not smooth. So I feel it is of limited use for paid work. That´s why I got the 24-105 Canon L, which I plan on using via adapter and on my FS700 with a speedbooster which both I got for a great price two years ago. Could be a nice lens for AF with the S5II. Not sure if the tiny steps are still visible then. My S1 already has the ProresRaw and Braw over hdmi. S5II demands a 200 Euro update key for that. To be fair though I had to update my S1 to VLog with a paid update before I could do the Raw update later on. So for me the only reason to buy a S5II would be the great video AF and the swivel screen. I would cost me around 900 EUR after selling my S1. Too much for me. So decision taken.:)

  7. I'm happy with my 24-105 as well. Very versatile and the OIS makes the stabilization even better. Focuses really close too.

  8. I wish we had some idea of sales numbers. Even accounting for the hype, it seems like this will be a very successful camera for Pannyboy. It'd be interesting to see what the sales numbers are like vs. their other cameras, and between the II and the IIX.

  9. People are eager this announcement for too long already, I guess. Seems a winner and irresistible too... to my eyes. - EAG :- ) PS: Many people have wondered myself straight on private. Hope my link to here to this EOSHD thread and the videos you've posted may clear up current and further doubts ; )

  10. The bundled kit with the 20-60mm zoom and with the 50mm prime is insanely good value for money and a good enough starting point to get going with.

  11. Awesome! So what's your lens of choice?

  12. There is plenty of need for an EVA replacement in a slightly smaller body. Firstly, it's going to be hard cramming all that in to a thin mirrorless body. Sure, you could do something like the Pocket6K Pro but if you are aiming for the next level up user, the professional, most do not like the form factor of DSLR's for video. Panasonic needs a Sony FX6 level camera in their lineup. The FX6 is hugely popular for any work where an Alexa Mini is too expensive or not required. FX6's are everywhere and easily dominate the Pro market globally. Why wouldn't Panasonic want a slice of that pie? Do you know what most Camera Operators that shoot on FX6's also buy? FX30's and FX3's as B Cameras. You know what else these operators are starting to purchase? Genuine lenses for Autofocus. Lots of shooters doing sport content (which is a huge market) are now wanting AF as the new systems are very reliable. For the best performance, they are buying genuine lenses. So, with an FX6 purchase, you will likely get an FX3 or FX30 purchase AND two or three G Master lenses. Panasonic would be absolutely crazy to not chase that market.

  13. While on the topic of raw & codecs, I stumbled across a pretty good article that gives an overview of video codecs and even gives a demo of making one in Rust: https://blog.tempus-ex.com/hello-video-codec/

  14. Exactly!! These early first "reviews" all say that AF performance is very very close, with Sony only marginally ahead. (and with Sony being by far a bigger sponsor overall, you have to wonder how much unconscious bias might be going on....) And we all know it often takes a lot of time to get the most out of an AF system, to know all its quirks and settings. Thousands of people have been spending hundreds of thousands of hours using and figuring out Sony AF over the last few years. While the S5mk2 isn't even shipping yet. Wouldn't shock me if after a year of people using the S5mk2, learning and understanding it, that perhaps Panasonic AF comes out on top as #1 now. But anyway... why even care, we're arguing over the last 0.1% of AF performance? We're splitting hairs. I think it is time to agree there are now more important things to consider about a camera than the AF! Yup, Canon made a move for their short term benefit that will long term harm them. Bingo! When Panasonic's AF is beating what was just a few short years ago the "amazingly best AF" from Canon, then we know these AF debates can be over. Who cares who exactly has the number one spot in this exact moment in time, be it Sony/Canon/Nikon/Panasonic/whoever? It's like caring if the Nikon D4 or Canon 1D X has the better AF for photography?? That kind of debate between photographers ceased to be relevant to 99% of us! And now it looks like we're reaching that point in autofocus for videographers as well?

  15. I must say... I do really love this camera. Disclaimer being Panasonic is loaning me the camera and lenses and paid for an entire Tokyo trip. I'm trying to be as objective as possible, but the AF performance has been surprisingly good. I love the IBIS and the color science is great. It doesn't feel as premium as my OM-1 or even an R5... but this isn't in that price bracket. The fact that this camera is this good, all while being under $2k is actually a big deal. Makes me excited for an S2H... or other flagships. I still love micro 4/3 and think the 10-25 panny/leica is one of the best lenses ever. I can't wait for a GH version of this camera with phase detect!

  16. Unfortunately the S5 IIX only does 1080 ProRes internal recordings. I hope they add 2K ProRes as well! Because that's a very common resolution with ProRes. And SD cards can handle 2K. (and the SD cards is why it doesn't have 4K ProRes, and records to an external USB drive instead)

  17. The other big problem for Panasonic is there no upwards path to progress with the L Mount. Desperately there is an EVA2 with an L Mount that is needed! (so very sad that a EVA1 MFT never happened 😕 ) Seems the cinema camera division at Panasonic has been gutted, so I guess an EVA2 (of any sorts) won't be happening? If a future EVA1 sequel will never happen, and the LUMIX team have to step up to the plate, then perhaps a "Panasonic BS2H" is what is needed?? (an updated BS1H!) Apparently the boss of the cinema division now works in the LUMIX division, and I'd say that is very very very good news indeed! Gives me hope for a future "Panasonic BS2H" This BS2H could have dual SDI outputs (with zero delay, and independent), plus internal NDs, and that would make everyone very very happy. (plus of course keep everything good about the BS1H, and bring over all the goodness of the S5mk2)

  18. In ALL of the direct heads to heads it looked better as did the SOOC colour science and as for the IBIS…

  19. Truly incredible camera, they took what was already my favorite camera and made it perfect by fixing the AF. I do hope its not too little too late. If that AF system had shipped with the original S5 there is a strong possibility I would be all in on Panasonic right now for both photos and video. I am still not sure though if CAF works with the Canon EF adapter, if not then EF lens owners would still need to buy L mount lenses to really take advantage of the AF. I watched Gerald Undone's review of the S5II, the one big thing I wish he had tested was the additional stability option which was Boot IS option which I believe uses AI and additional processing for stability. I really wanted to see if it was anywhere near GoPro's level of stability. I think the perfect hybrid might finally exist and it is the S5II, my absolute only gripe would be having to buy L mount lenses and for me having already gone all in on Canon its too late for me to turn around. It is definitely a great time to be a photographer and/or videographer no matter what system you choose.

  20. It's a comedy channel where the host does wildlife photography which almost entirely consists of the squirrels in his neighborhood and where he renamed "bokeh" to "toneh" to make fun of Mr. Northrup going too far with shallow DOF. If you're upset that he goes light on the technical details and doesn't produce Roger Deakins-level cinematography, I think you've missed the point. (And I definitely enjoyed Kasey's video as a standout in a sea of people reading spec sheets and basically shooting the exact same video as every other channel who got invited to Japan)

  21. The USB-SSD recording and IP streaming are also unique to the S5iiX. If there's any chance you'll someday want the $200 raw upgrade to the regular S5ii, it's worth just ponying up at the start and getting the S5iiX for these extras IMO.

  22. It's believed red and Canon traded tech as the Komodo has a Canon RF mount, so Canon can have compressed raw. So Canon raw LT does infringe, but they have a pass.

  24. I really don't get the reason why people who have FF cameras are so disturbed by the mere existence of M43. Can't we let M43 be M43 and FF be FF- it's all good. If you like the image format and size, great! Why does one have to be inferior? They both do things that the other cannot do. I think there's the inconvenience. It would seem that people want simplified answers- bigger sensor, more megapixels, high bit rate, etc. I'm not saying those thing don't matter, but there are other things too. Cameras have ergonomics, exposure tools, ports, EVF's, image fidelity, etc. None of that is "Full-Frame" or "xx megapixels" or "intra-frame compression". So many cameras produce great images these days, even good enough for Hollywood. After, it becomes the best tool for the job and needs.

  25. I wouldn’t say they ruin the quality of the light but they do indeed change the characteristics a bit. Consider this - when you’re looking into the source from a slight angle there will be less surface area visible witch leads to a “harder” feel of the light hitting your subject. Not always bad though, and I don’t see any hotspots (except what to expect from an harder light) only slightly more defined shadow areas. This is where makeup can help a lot of you want a look that’s a bit more punchy but stay out of trouble with shiny areas. So - consider it’s a tool to both reduce spill in a quick and easy way with the slight change in characteristics and then use the knowledge to create the moods you’re aiming for. And like PPNS says - if you want to keep the softness use good old cutters and flags. Happy new year!

    Indie Christmas Movie

Amazing work, maybe a bit less jitter next time and actors should be more theatrical in their performance and scream their lines as was the norm in the 1930s, their microphones were shoddy which is why people spoke so loud in old movies LOL Loved the old timey dolly movements though and those classic zoom in.

  27. I tried to find a list of 10-bit capable FF'ish cameras and this thread came up. I'm surprised. 10-bit colors are not for #1 increase dynamic range or #2 make underexposed footage look better. Idea is to but more colors (hues) in to the same color space. The advance is gain in color grading. Simple test would be to shoot in tungsten WB with daylight lights. Then you should see difference between 8bit and 10bit. Remember that grading is not about correcting. It's about creating.

    Canon R6 Mark II Announced

The two quick fixes that they should do is offering a battery grip that allows 8k 50/60 basically solving the battery issue and re-enable video in photo mode (why not give user the choice? They could even have a custom function that you can enable and disable video mode in photo). If you don't use 8k50/60 the battery grip makes it more useable, I use mine a lot in 8k 50 RAW so I have the V-Mount battery with USB-PD mounted over the cage. Not great but the only other camera than can do 8k RAW 50/60 is the Nikon Z9 or REDs... But we are really off topic this should belong on the R5c thread and not the R6 II one.
