They seem to be pitching the R-50 as the new EOS-M but, again, I suspect the lack of IBIS will be a big miss for the crowd that they are going after but the two kit lenses for it do have OIS so maybe not.4 points

Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced
92F and 3 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I could never dumb myself down to an Rp style body again, especially not for $1700 when stuff like X-H2 or S5 II exists. The ergonomics are like a compact camera from 20 years ago. The devil is in the detail when it comes to what they have taken out. Like aperture priority mode in video mode and stuff like that. Look at how much Panasonic are packing into the S5 II by comparison. Would much rather fish for a lightly used "as-new" S5 II on eBay for same price as a new R8!4 points -
In the short to medium term there will be plenty of opportunities for people to have careers as editors of the Ai output. None of the code that I've experimented with it generating has actually worked (or even compiled) without me finessing it and anything creative I've prompted it to do has shown a propensity to frequently - and wildly - overestimate the number of limbs/fingers humans have and the extent of their range of articulation. It has also had a bizarre and somewhat disturbing penchant for creating faces in scenes of crowds where one of them has more than a passing resemblance to the former leader of the National Socialist party.2 points

The great AI content theft debate

The great AI content theft debate
PannySVHS reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Indeed, there are quite a few troubling signs when it comes to AI and the way it will be used in the future. To me, there is a lot of promise in AI as long as it's used as merely a TOOL or aid to the person. It's disappointing, but not at all surprising, that it is being viewed as a replacement for the person completely.1 point -
True, but not for a while bcuz practically speaking, unless you're a new shooter making your first foray into buying glass, what are the actual advantages of buying into that system now? Especially with all these Canon adapters that essentially give the EF very practical advantages over the RF line.1 point

Still waiting for my S5ii to turn up replacing my original S5… Otherwise, nope.1 point

Yeah the R8 hardware isn't crazy but remember the R6 had the 1DX3 sensor and R6ii improved on it and this is what you get inside R8. I still find it pretty crazy you get one of Canons flagship sensors inside a $1500 camera. They didn't gimp it video spec wise either giving it face only detect, a feature not even present in the R5..1 point

Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced
John Matthews reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Sales make no difference to your use of the camera, unless in the case of the NX it gets discontinued of course, but that's rare. You shouldn't concern yourself with what other people are buying in large numbers! Just pick what's right for you. Actually it is an advantage to choose something different to the masses as you then have a tool and image that stands out. NX1 still stands up well today but Samsung had bigger fish to fry with their smartphone cameras. They felt the mirrorless camera market just wasn't big enough, taken as a whole, not enough growth potential compared to smartphones. I have to say they were right. It is a bit like Exxonmobil deciding to quit gasoline and going into olive oil instead. It isn't at all though is it. It doesn't have IBIS. It has pound shop ergonomics. It probably won't even let you shoot video in the PSAM modes like R6. It has a tiny battery and silly single card slot you can't get at when it's rigged up or on a tripod! The EVF is probably the size of a pinhead and the codec bitrates are probably crippled with mud. Add to that the not inconsiderable price difference between £1699 + £1699 again for a lens, and compare that to a beautiful vintage Contax Zeiss on a second hand Panasonic S1 for £1000, and you must really have to prioritise autofocus over literally everything else artistic to get an R8 instead! EF is on the way out now, it's been a good run. I can use my Sigma E-mount lenses on both Sony and Nikon cameras. Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 way to go for me. Absolutely zero appeal in the R8 even as a curiosity or a second (20th?) body. Whereas X-H2 gives me 8K ProRes!1 point -

The Fp has absolutely no competition when it comes to size and the ergonomics are well thought out. Build quality is very solid. It feels and looks like a professional tool. Can you really say the back of the R8 looks anything like a near $2000 tool in 2023? Looks like the controls you'd find on a $200 compact. 4K/60p 15ms rolling shutter with good AF does not a great film make. It will not make you into Spielberg. Taken as an all-round package it just isn't very exciting as, say the X-H2 is. The X-H2 is a proper pro and enthusiast camera with cutting edge specs. This is an upgrade for all those Instagram click weasels still holding onto the their entry level DSLRs.1 point -
Agreed, EF L glass has never been cheaper and is still great. I also have some RF STM primes and they're cheap and compact, have IS and macro. It is a bummer no more third party lenses from Sigma and such though..1 point

Yes FF oversampled 4K60p uncropped. 15ms RS. DPAF2. Those specs are higher than anything the competition offers. You have to step up to 4000€ A7SIII for uncropped 4K60p (and its not oversampled). No IBIS and lightweight body could be an advantage to some shooters. By the way, I love how R8's body gets slammed for not being "ergonomic" yet the Sigma FP gets a pass. Double standards.1 point

Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced
John Matthews reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Sales have never really been a very good indicator of quality. When GH2 was out everyone was buying a DSLR or 70D for video instead. Fact is RF lenses are very shit indeed. Massively overpriced, massive, huge, enormous, and build quality varies from office inkjet cartridge to office photocopier machine if you're lucky. Give me Sigma L-mount or E-mount lenses over RF any day!1 point -
Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced
PannySVHS reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It exists mainly as an upgrade path into more expensive lenses for EOS R7 APS-C users. So a full frame R7 basically. You really have to want to invest in the RF full frame lenses to make the most of it. Therefore the price of £1699 is a bit of a misnomer. Pretty much any 4K FF camera from last 5 years currently over £1000 on eBay would be better choice for manual focus glass... Pana S1, S5, Nikon Z6, Sony A7 III, A7C, Sigma Fp, etc.1 point -
Canon EOS-R8, EOS-R50 And New Lenses Announced

This camera illustrates the significant difference between Canon and everyone else. Even when putting out a compelling package, and for some folks this is a compelling package, they can't help themselves from holding back something significant like IBIS. Meanwhile, others are putting everything they can into even their entry level options. To me this feels like a stop gap more than anything. It's not compelling enough for most serious users, but might provide an upgrade path for RP or R users who might be eying the exit as other companies offer better value and those cameras continue to become long in the tooth.1 point -
It’s definitely a good option for existing rf lens owners that want a b-cam but for 100% video users, I would pony the $500 extra dollars for the S5ii.1 point
-
There are cost saving measures for sure and of course FF 4K60p will surely overheat under long shooting. But at least is has FF4K60p which neither S5II or even A7IV offer. DPAF2 will also be way superior to S5II AF. Another strong benefit is the fairly low RS (15.2ms in FF / 9.5ms in S35). So for $1500 its imo a great offering. Competition is healthy for us consumers no matter what system you're on.1 point
-
Battery life is a bit short, single card and potential overheating in 4k 60p but imo is a super value for the price. Overall I think is a better value proposition than then R6 II.1 point
-
Yeah some people will probably prefer the absence of IBIS. Lok's channel shows some pretty convincing handheld Vlog footage with lens IS and EIS. No wobble. He also does an overheating test in his oven (!) and the R8 never overheated after an hour so that's also pretty convincing. I was also worried about battery life with the smaller battery but his test shows an hour of recording time in 4K25p which isn't too bad I guess.. plus it has USB-C charging for longer tripod use. Overall this might be the best value FF camera..1 point
-
Wow the R8 has the same sensor and specs as the R6II including FF uncropped 4K60p in 10-bit Clog3 as well as DPAF2 with subject detect only. It even keeps the handy photo/stills switch. Only thing missing is IBIS. But for a whopping $1K less. That's quite a deal if you can forego IBIS or maybe need a B-cam for your Canon setup. Oh yeah and recording time is supposed to be 2 hours instead of unlimited which is imo a pretty ok compromise. Let's find out about overheating..1 point

What OG cams you got your eyes on going into 2023?
IronFilm reacted to QuickHitRecord for a topic
This was my main work camera for two years. I struggled with it. Coming from the C100, I thought that it would be a home run but I found myself missing the C100 a lot. The C100 was easier to handhold, had more reliable DPAF (even though it was center-weighted), and monitoring wasn't as confusing. I was unimpressed with the H264 and only used CRL, recorded to a Solidpod that I mounted externally. Other C200 shooters have told me that they are okay with the noise levels, but to me the CRL footage was noisier than I was comfortable for client work at ISO 400 or above. After almost every shoot I would run NeatVideo on all of my footage, apply a LUT (unless they wanted CLOG2), and export ProRes files before handing it off to my clients. The resulting footage was really nice, but it took a lot to get there. The day that I shipped the C200 out, I breathed a sigh of relief. I now have a C70, which addresses all of my problems with the C200.1 point -
