  1. The idea of editorial independence was enshrined in the BBC’s founding Royal Charter in 1927, which stated the corporation should be “independent in all matters of internal control.” This was a way of ensuring the BBC’s coverage was not subject to political interference or pressure from any external sources such as the government. Now the editorial independence of the BBC is at best completely neutered by the Conservative Party. Many talented journalists have left. In many respects the best news organisation in the world has taken to sourcing stories purely from Twitter and social media. https://www.eoshd.com/news/controversy-at-the-bbc-and-impartialitys-true-meaning/

    I bought a Pentax K-1

Pentax K-1 is a great underestimated camera. The only problem is slow af. But if you are lucky you can do someting like this:

  3. On a side note, I never liked the term "creator" from the start. It's pretentious. No matter how awesome a video I make is, I didn't cReAte anything. I captured something that God created, and edited it into something cool. I produced something, but I didn't create shit. Imagine an architect looking at a building he/she designed and declaring: "I created this". But it makes people who make a basic-ass video or reel feel good and important, so that's one of the reasons it's so popular IMO. /rant.

  5. When our music turns rubbish and our language ugly we know there's trouble ahead. Filmmakers and photographers seem to be on the way out, to be replaced by something altogether more homogenous - the "content creator" or simply "creator". Why specialise when you can just "create stuff"? New blog post: https://www.eoshd.com/news/creator-replaces-filmmaker-meet-thy-creator

  7. In fact it makes me pretty cross they did not because the standard model is more than enough for it’s principal market so why not make the X more pro? Oh, I know…to protect the S2H. I hope… 🙏

  8. Crossed posts. I agree 100%. I suspect most ‘filmmakers’ would agree whilst most content creators/‘shitters’ would disagree and require that selfie mode because you know it’s all about them and not the ‘content’ don’t you? 😬

  9. Update: I did it...or am at least in the process of, ie, another (used) S1H is arriving tomorrow and next week, the pair of S1R's will be off. My season is almost upon me so I'd rather start as I mean to go from the very first job which will be a pair of S1H's for hybrid work and a single S5ii for mostly pure video useage. That WILL be it for 2023 and then, having established my preferred 3 unit set up in principle, can work in the future towards an identical 3 body set up also. Why not 3x S5ii or S5iix's? Side-hinged LCD is a deal-breaker for me. Hate is a strong word, but I truly despise such things. Tilt screens are king and the one on the S1H is perfect. Real-time LUT? No, not tried it, but like it and would ideally like to work with that in principle in the future. I'm not a 'filmmaker' or a commercial videographer/photographer that has to please a client who may wish to then use their own look, but an independent hybrid wedding photo/videographer who gets booked specifically for a look. I have however been playing with a creative LUT from Gamut and tweaked it to create my own grading LUT plus have made a preset for Lightroom for my stills using Photoshop, so pretty much the same thing, just not in camera. Again, it's another reason why trading the S1R's for another S1H will help in this regard because consistent grading will be much easier, especially as I am using log (for the first time) this year. Finally, why not flip the S5ii for a third S1H and have complete uniformity and interchangeability...which would be/is my ideal? The AF tracking issue. I have a need and the slight compromise of the grading side of things will be a compromise I can live with for another year. S2H please. Three of them. And then with a career expected to be another 8 seasons, could be my last ever pro camera...

  10. I'm starting with hybrid weddings this year. Unlike you I come from a video background. I have the S1 and S5 and although they both produce the same excellent images, I find the S1 to be far better to use other than its weight. The EVF and LCD are very good which makes quick shooting much easier than on the S5. I find it to be faster when writing to the cards as well and the IBIS is better which is a real bonus in a wedding. What intrigues me about the S5 mk2 is that it has the AF for when it's needed, it has 2 UHS-II SD card slots (should mean faster write times when switching between photo and video), better EVF and LCD (and punch in to check focus) and last but not least, the realtime LUTS. I believe you could have the photos and the videos with the same look straight out of the camera which should great. Have you tried that?

  11. Yes and had it for a couple of weeks now. Had a little play but nothing more though it starts earning it’s keep in a couple of weeks. I got it specifically for 3 reasons: Reliable AF tracking for those few occasions on every job where I need that reliability. No 30 minute timer, essential for me for longer wedding ceremonies and speeches. Fan. Never had my S5 overheat, but then I used to use my S1H as my principal static unit. The new boy has been mounted on a Ronin RS3 which itself is mounted on an ultra-light tripod (a fraction under 1kg) with the APSC Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and DJI Wireless Go. This unit is purely for ceremonies, speeches, entrances, exits and couple stuff, either full length static or operating the gimbal in my hands. It’s now just a question of whether I flip my pair of S1R’s for another S1H… Pros: I prefer (love) the form factor of the S1H. It is my favourite, almost perfect camera though I would prefer it to be about 10% smaller and lighter ideally. Ideally, I would rather it had better AF, but it’s not terrible and in my use case, not really an issue. The button positioning and damper shutter are superb as is the rear LCD that I use exclusively to shoot with. It has an anti-moire filter. The pros of the S1R’s however are that I have 2 units so can use primes more easily, they were relatively cheap to buy (used) and have a higher res sensor for stills. Going from 4 to 3 bodies is better in most ways, but it does require me to lose two prime focal lengths and replace them with a zoom. The S1H counters with better low light capability. The biggest issue with the S1R’s is that because I shoot 4k 50p, I have to drop to 8 bit which is OK in most circumstances, but not all and I would rather all the sensors matched. The 5k on the S1R is superb, but there is no Vlog option, so editing mismatch issues.. Arguably the S5ii sensor is different but then so is my drone and OK, I need to do a little fiddling in areas. Conclusion = I think I am going to push the button. I might…just might, even consider trading the S5ii for a third S1H and go with that triple set up…

    I bought a Pentax K-1

Ha ha! Even 6 is enough for most uses. During lockdown, to give myself a project I bought a few 300Ds and 400Ds on eBay and sent them around the country, asking people to take self portraits which I then edited.

  13. "Sometimes it seems that..." 🙂 No one here assumed that raw video via motion app would be worse. Worse than what anyway? Take deezids comment onboard for sure. It is a great comment. All that content is hurting our planet big time, electric power, fuel, materials all wasted for more and more shitty content. 8k is power hungry, devices are energy hungry and greedy for natural resources. Production is greedy as fuck for energy and natural resoures. All that mass mobile 4K, 8k acquisition and distribution plus storage, devices for that, all that is leaving a foot stomp on our only planet. Mass production and consumption of garbage will ruin our planet, the capitalist attitude and consumer behaviour even moreso. Not against your search for image quality. But my two cents without judging you! 4K raw will look stellar on your 4k TV. 8K TVs are not even legally produced at the moment for the European market anymore.

  14. It's kind of like the old-school difference between "broadcaster" and "filmmaker". Aspects of both crafts can often be interchangeable and muddied, but there's a philosophical difference between the two. 'Broadcasting' the States has most often been about making quick, often shitty, content. News, game shows, talk shows, soap operas --just constant stuff stuff stuff. A lot of that is now being built on independent folks, rather than organized broadcasting business entities, but it's still the same low-effort-with-the-narrrative content. Decent filmmmakiing is considered and slow. There's typically a serious effort to infuse some story telling art into it. Churning out content... eh, there's some of that, but not so much.

  15. Also cameras such as the Canon R6II or Sony FX6/FX9 don't have any of these crazy NR and oversharpening issues despite using Phase AF. It's not a hardware issue but an image processing flaw.

  16. I read a few days ago that Sony changed the Imaging Edge app to Creators app, and that then connects to the Creators Cloud. Very creative indeed. It's been happening for some time but only now feels like it's happening all at once. It has certainly become a calling card of younger millennials and older gen z to present themselves as "multi-disciplined". One can't just be a photographer anymore, but a photographer, videographer, model, talent agent, etc. It's not just social media in the creative sector of the economy that has ruined us but work culture in general. In a capitalist dominant world where the few with resources ensure that the many without resources know that they are replaceable, what other outcome could you expect. Make yourself irreplaceable and you'll prosper, right? Regarding older millennials, like myself, and younger gen z I believe; millennials have grown tired of busting their ass to chase a carrot they'll never eat and gen z have seen enough from the older generations to know that the hustle is a fruitless effort. This is all coming from mine own American perspective. I know this forum spans many cultures and generations. If you embrace the hustle, more power to you and I wish you the best. As far as the "good-enough-is-good-enough" goes in the creative world, It has simply become an esthetic for the younger population and of course corporate number crunchers will happily follow suit. The current state of the arts and creative commerce tells us all we need to know. Vinyl records are outselling cds. Music is being made made in Garage Band with cheap instruments and microphones. More people will watch a Tik-Tok video that took 15 minutes to make than will watch a properly produced motion picture that took 3 years and thousands of man-hours to make. Polaroid and other film technologies are being embraced once again. As well, early digital camera technology is exploding on the secondhand market. Look at the success of the horror movie Skinamarink (2022). It was shot with an FX-6 but it looks like absolute shit . The lo-fi look is where it's at right now. Why is that? I definitely have thoughts on the subject, but I'll save everyone's eyes from continuing this rant.

  17. Sad but true..after 23 years in the business, we are too tired to compete again for the bottom! I have these conversations all the time the last couple of years. The energy and time to "educate" the customer is so tiring right now, and usually they have a photo or video on their phone which is good enough for them and their social media "campaign", or after a couple of meetings and a half a dozen phone calls everything concludes "just do some drone shots"! No, thank you..

  18. The gig economy is the future economy. As a freelancer my whole life I ironically find it kinda sad, actually. It's yet another corporate race to the bottom.

  19. My vote is to formally change the term ‘creator’ to that of ‘shitter’ from this point onwards. But being serious for a moment and playing devils advocate, I think there is room…a need even, for ‘content creators’ alongside the more traditional titles of photographer, videographer, filmmaker etc. Ultimately, we are defined by what we do/produce rather than the titles we give ourselves. Now I do have 2 creators that need to go for their morning walk in the woods…

  20. I have gotten to where I shoot almost exclusively with the R7 for events and hybrid photo/video work. For talking heads, long form content, concerts, etc. where the camera can be locked down and audio is more important then I use the C70. For commercial shoots and things like music videos I typically combine the C70 with the R7 as the b-cam. For audio when running and gunning I typically use just a shotgun mic, the Canon EF 24-105mm F4.0 lens and get pretty close to the subject to try to reduce background noise. When I am working with an onscreen personality doing impromptu interviews at events then I use a Sennheiser handheld mic and G4 receiver. For talking head work I use a Sennheiser G4 transmitter and receiver combined with a mini-XLR shotgun mic into the C70. Some of it is depending on budget as well. If the budget is pretty low I will just use the R7 simply because I don't see the point in bringing the C70 to a lower budget shoot unless it will drastically improve my workflow. If the budget is high enough then I will use the C70 even for shots that I would typically shoot with the R7 (i.e. I will rig up the C70 on a gimbal if the budget is high enough, and forgo the R7's IBIS for the C70's improved DR/IQ when shooting handheld). At the end of the day I definitely make my camera selections based on the project type. If the project is 90% photography and 10% video then I will probably use the R5. If its 50/50 photography/video then I will use the R7, if I need two cameras then I will pair the R7 with the C70, if its 100% video then the budget and audio requirements will make me choose the C70 or R7, etc. etc. The great thing about the R7, R5, and C70 is that none of them need much rigging to work and all of them will produce great quality with or without rigging/lighting. I know BM cameras tend to need more rigging/lighting to get the best results which is why with my setup I can use any camera for anything from run and gun to studio work.

  21. I’m not sure that really matters. What we really should fear is when humanity is bereft of the ability to distinguish between propaganda - irrespective of the source - and useful, factual information. And, possibly worse, lacking in any apparent desire to be able to differentiate between the two.

  24. So, I asked it the same questions about you being involved in controversies, hoping that maybe you calling it a lying prick might have had some effect. And...well. So, it seems to have dropped the 1DC theft allegation but when pressed further for other controversies, it replied with this.. So you are apparently a fraudster, a racist and a sex pest. I honestly don't know where you get the time 😉 Pressed further for sources, it came up with the same bogus link shit. I then asked it what role EOSHD had in the R5 controversy and it came back with a decent summation. When pressed further though about whether an app was created in pursuit of the testing, it confirmed it was but then went off into fantasy land about what it did and it being sold on here I've got to say that this is horrendous. It blatantly makes stuff up about someone then when the subject of those accusations corrects the record (which should make it smarter) it then immediately pivots and starts making up totally different shit about them. Who the fuck is this "intelligence" actually modelled on? Boris Johnson by the looks of it. The 2020 allegation is interesting as it clearly just randomly tying anything controversial in the camera industry with you as I think we can both guess what that one is about based on a recent settlement. I'm surprised it didn't blame you for the M8 sensor debacle... "Reid is well known for pouring cold water on camera manufacturer's hype and it is believed that the sensors in the Leica M8 began to rust due to this ingress of liquid from Reid."
