  2. I was talking to a friend this morning who started out planning to be a YouTuber but ended up doing actual paid work and losing interest in YouTube. He's a Sony user and he gave me a different perspective for why this camera sucks and it is a pretty simple one: given it's limitations it can't grow with you. His first paid jobs were because people knew he did "that YouTube stuff" and they wondered if he could film something for them. He was of course stoked about it, but ended up having a problem: his A7iii was good for his YouTube channel but the 30 minute record limit didn't cut it for the theater productions he was asked to film. Suddenly the camera that he bought because all the YouTubers he wanted to emulate were using it, and that he bought on credit (he was 20 at the time and didn't know better), wasn't the right tool for the job. He was able to get around it when he found out the trick to remove the limit, but he still found it'd overheat sometimes. His parents eventually helped him buy an A7siii once they saw the potential in what he was doing, but it was a costly lesson. Obviously his experience might not be typical, but his point was that if he was just getting started now he'd probably buy this camera but end up regretting it because of it's limitations. People's intentions/priorities change over time. People buying this camera might only intend to use it for YouTube and short takes, but what happens when your co-worker offers to pay you to film their kid's play? Or you're asked to film your cousin's wedding? Anyway, it was an interesting perspective from someone that started out as a YouTuber that I thought I'd share.

    Canon EOS R5C

Here's a more comprehensive list of the R5C updates via Barry Griffin's IG: https://www.instagram.com/barry_canonproimaging/ EOS R5 C Firmware Update: Flex Zoom & CN8x15 IAS Lens support Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x support (same lens support as EOS C70) RF-S Lens support (RF-S 18-45mm, RF-S 18-150mm, RF-S 55-210mm) EOS R5 Catchup update (adds features from R5’s July, Nov & March FW release) Dual Fisheye: Enables Left/Right switching for VR recording Improved Video/Photo mode switching Adds Power Saving Mode Enhanced Clear Scan resolution (improves compatibility with LED walls). Adds Digital-Teleconverter function (adds 1.5x / 2x / 2.5x / 3x magnification) Option to change WFM & Vectors cope size and transparency Adds Canon 709 / BT.709 / CMT 709 (same as previous CEOS FW update) Adds ‘G Gain’ White Balance option in Custom Picture settings Adds subject selection via Lens Control Ring as an assignable function === Additionally Youtuber Yusuke Osawa just released an interview he did with a Canon rep about the announced FW updates. Might be worth checking out for some: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uquTpEvgCRg Thanks to user 'sugoroku' over at DVXuser for translating some key things not mentioned by NewsShooter or Barry Griffin. Specifically the following (take everything with a grain of salt obviously!): "1) Extended battery life. It only works with XF-AVC and not for RAW recording but should extend battery life up to 30% longer. 2) Two autofocus improvements. One being detecting human head more precisely especially when facing backwards and the other being focus tracking box changing its size and shape depending on the tracking subject. (around 15min. mark on the video link below)"

    EOSHD YouTube Thread

I'm loving the videos @Andrew Reidhas been posting on YouTube lately. They're cracking me up, because he's saying a lot of the things I'm thinking, but doing it with the British humor and wit that I lack. The Matt Granger one did me in this morning! If you haven't watched them you should! Keep it up, Andrew!

  6. Times change, as does how people get into video production and videography. You're unable to see things from a perspective that isn't yours @Kisaha. If you're a 21 year old kid (that's how old he was when he got his first paid gig) that is offered $75 to film a theater performance because you happen to own a camera for a YouTube channel you're trying to get off the ground, you're not going to have the experience and knowledge of someone that has been doing it for years and years. You're also probably not going to turn that opportunity down, either, because that's a credit card payment for the camera you put on credit. I was only relaying how his path into videography began, and how he first purchased a camera that was limited and how that impacted his unexpected, but ultimately successful, transition into doing paid work. He now shoots with three A7siii bodies and is doing well for himself. His criticism of the ZV-E1 is pretty valid, because 5 years ago he would've been the target demo for this camera, probably purchased it, and found he'd spent $2200 on a camera that he couldn't use for the work he'd eventually end up doing. As he put it, there's dozens of better options that won't limit a person from following whatever path they end up taking, whether it's being a YouTuber or becoming interested in filmmaking or videography as a job. His perspective was different from mine, and obviously yours, so I figured it was worth sharing.

  7. we just wrapped a few hours ago a documentary for the National TV. The first camera was an A7sIII and the second camera was an A7iii.. for most jobs, even an A7iii is good enough, if you shoot theater productions, even a C100mkII is ideal for it, which is not for most of the other stuff.. This is just one rare case.. most youtubers do not even care for "normal" jobs, and most blue collar videographers do not even know any youtubers..

  8. BM Pocket. Either the 4k or 6k - I’d let your lens preference decide. But only if you’re looking for the best image quality at the price - if convenience is a priority then I guess any of the affordable mirrorless cameras on the market (Sony, Sigma, Panasonic, Canon etc) will do a superb job in capable hands. if the camera is fixed and you know the preferred focal length then the 6k plus a Zeiss EF would be a good combination. Or a used (and cheaper) Nikon alternative with F-EF adapter. The choice isn’t really “what camera?”, it’s how do you want/need/like to work? AF or MF etc.

    Canon EOS R5C

Oh man, these are pretty much all the FW updates I had hoped for! "Improvements to the EOS R5 C include support for the EF-EOS R 0.71x Mount Adapter, faster switching time between photo and video modes, a power saving mode, 2x magnification during 8K MP4 recording and a digital-teleconverter option, maximizing flexibility by providing a quick way to increase the telephoto capability of the lens used." https://www.newsshooter.com/2023/04/02/canon-cinema-eos-firmware-updates/?fbclid=IwAR3gafIkHuTszqC19mYmhmtG9l7H3i8U2hXb_tAwIx7NVgjY-QYm_vt9TgQ&mibextid=Zxz2cZ

  11. Yeah, it's amazing the difference that app makes. But the developer and others acknowledge the limited glass on the phones. Maybe someone will bring out a more affordable version of the Xiaomi Leica concept phone where you can use Leica lenses with their latest flagship. Would love that with Fuji or Sony APSC mount or even M43. Obviously ergonomically bad, but these devices are little powerhouses that could be very useful with decent lenses. If using a tripod the ergonomics don't matter too much and they have great screens. Would be awesome to be able to pick up something like this used after it has been out 2 years for the fraction of the price of a Fuji XH2.

60p output will always have the dreaded soap opera camcorder look. Just convert the file in a 24p timeline if you want it to look "cinematic". Even the ZV-E1 knows this and switches to 23.98p when you enter cinematic mode.

  13. I'd also argue that they've already got people's money, so they don't care. They want you to buy the next camera, not increase the value of the camera you've already bought. And it works, because more than a couple notable YouTubers ended up getting the A1 and the A7RV after selling the A7SIII, which I'm sure then influenced others to do the same since that's how it works. I just wish more people cared about this shitty behavior.

  14. The regular S23 4K cDNG in Motioncam blew me away. Looks better than anything than I've ever seen from any phone, crappy and heavily processed "8K" phone included.

  15. The a7siii is a hybrid camera that takes great video. But, it is not a video camera - most importantly, it overheats at high video frame rates especially. Its ergonomics are exactly the same as Sony stills cameras. If you want a video camera from Sony with the same innards, you have the fx3, which does not overheat and which has ergonomics - hardware - better suited to video. Is this unfair to abandon the hybrid camera in terms of video upgrades? Maybe. But what are you really missing out on? The a7siii video image is fine, same as the fx3 even post updates. The missed upgrades really do not matter that much for image quality - do you really need synched time code? Do you really care about menu configurations? Is adding LUTs beyond the REC709 viewing LUT for Slog3 important? And, I believe the fx3 updates did NOT add built-in breathing correction; but, the fx30 has that out of the box. So, again, the fx3 and the a7siii have the same video capability. You cannot fix the overheating of the a7siii with a firmware upgrade, or give it tally lights, or a zoom rocker, or eliminate the viewfinder hump. An no firmware update made the fx3 image better than the a7siii image either. And most if not all of the new features of the ZV E1 are laughable for serious videographers. Do you really want severely cropped auto framing? Product mode. Seriously.

  16. Leadership position syndrome. Sony have become the new Canon. Little to No firmware upgrades. Heavy segmentation. Paper spec cameras that overheat. Zero regards towards criticism. That being I always tell people, buy a camera (or any digital product) for what it can do today. Don't expect added specs down the line, you're most likely setting yourself up for disappointment.

  17. On their Discord. He said this: "if i remeber well, Asus Zenfone 6 had exposed the 8k resolution native". Then he brought up the old LG V35 and said that would be better with it's 16MP sensor, doing 4K raw. I will probably just stick with my 6K phone doing motioncam raw and upscale to 8k, as it sounds like the ZenFone 6 may not be very good. I will see how much they cost. But he seemed to agree that sticking with the 108MP sensor in my Xiaomi would be best. Maybe the ZenFone is weaker and skips frames or something. He also said: "As said before if you want the most details capture in daylight use an LG V35 w 256gb version. That sensor and optics mix gives the most definition i had ever seen in a smartphone. Again 1 minute of 8k more then 40GB (plus is more sensitive in terms of capturing, easily you can get frame drops) On newer phones i am sure this wont be an issue." BTW LG V phones are great for audiophiles like me, who use wired earphones. Much better sound quality than other phones as they have a built in AMP DAC.

  18. Honestly, I don't even know what we're talking about anymore. I am just a hobbyist who has been using a 5D Mark III with 1080p ML Raw for the past 5-6 years as I attempt to make a few short films in my spare time. I'm hardly chasing cameras. I picked up a Sigma FP a few months ago, on a whim, and I like it. It has a nice image, I can't say for sure that it's a better image than the 5D though. I assumed the 14bit color from the 5D may be evening out the playing field, but what do I know... as I said... I'm not a professional like you guys are. I've always been a writer first, so story is the most important thing to me, but I'm not delusional enough to think I am going to sell a screenplay or make a film that will have any impact on anything. I enjoy doing it, though and I suppose there are worse things I could spend my money on. Next year I may buy a camcorder, making movies was a lot more fun back when camcorders were the only option for zero budget filmmakers. I will end with this, though. Since we're all being so brutally honest... none of these cameras look that good. If you're shooting with a P4K and a Sigma zoom, or a 5D3 with ML Raw... they all look amateurish. So when you guys attack other people for their choices... remember your choices probably look questionable as well. Then again, I've never seen any of your work, so maybe you guy's are artistic geniuses, but how could anyone know... only a few people share any of their work on this forum and when they do, the posts about the next best camera gets way more attention... Good luck to you.

    Fuji X-H2S

I analyzed the raw data in the DNG converted from ProRes RAW and now I know exactly how it's messed up. I adjusted my tool and I think I have a working fix now. It fixes the raw data itself, so the result will be perfect in every software that reads DNG. Before (see the broken line in the middle): After: I'm still testing my tool, it can read 12/16bit DNG, uncompressed, or lossless compressed, the lossy formats are not supported. It uses multiple threads, on my recent i7 laptop it converts with 25-35fps. It's a pain to convert twice but at least I got it working, and learned a bit of C++ on the way. If only I could fix the framerate issue as well, but no chance for that.
