What cameras are you actually using?
Rinad Amir and 2 others reacted to kye for a topic
I'm curious to know what cameras people are actually using? By reading the forums I get the impression that everyone is using the latest and (so called) greatest cameras, but I suspect that's not the case. I haven't been posting lately because I've gotten the impression that no-one would be interested unless I was pixel-peeing a Z9 or whatever, and I've moved past that now.3 points -

I still use 2 GH2's for live 1080p 25fps stuff... English classes that I get paid for. Super happy with them and they seem good enough when used with an ATEM Mini. For personal stuff, I use the GH6 and a G100 for travel. I'll be selling my E-M1 ii this next week if I can get 400-ish Euros for it. The rest of my cameras are either film or just broken broken.3 points -

I'm loving the videos @Andrew Reidhas been posting on YouTube lately. They're cracking me up, because he's saying a lot of the things I'm thinking, but doing it with the British humor and wit that I lack. The Matt Granger one did me in this morning! If you haven't watched them you should! Keep it up, Andrew!2 points -
GH6. There is something special about V-Log with high dynamic range enabled and the Panasonic V-Log to REC709 LUT. I have never had such an easy time with color grading. I made the move up from the GH5 because I wanted better audio focus and to be able to record 4 channels of audio, which the GH6 will with the Panasonic stereo XLR audio hot shoe adapter.2 points

Sony New Camera Launch - 29th March 2023

There are good and bad things about it, I definitely get why people dread it, but it's the future. Social media is how they get their feet wet and THEN that's when their world opens up to filmmaking and videography. I mean, we're already seeing it happen. People who think my friend is a rare example aren't paying attention. You're still missing the point. No one is saying you buy one camera and that's it. Someone starting their video journey though probably shouldn't have to purchase a whole new camera in a year or two because the camera they spent $2200 on can't record for extended periods or in hot conditions without overheating. At least not in 2023, anyway. People need to stop making excuses for these companies. He's a nice enough dude, but unfortunately he's a Sony shill. I probably wouldn't take what he has to say, re: whether you should buy a camera, very seriously.2 points -
I agree, the next generation of us filmmakers will more likely have come up via a pathway of being aspiring youtubers/tiktokkers/instagrammers than because they were aspiring to be the next Richard Deakins The B Cam Op on the film I just finished was yet another example of exactly that, he was a fairly successful Instagram Influencer who has now transitioned over into the Camera Dept on film sets. I am using a Nikon Z6 with either an Atomos Ninja V or an Atomos Ninja Star. Mostly shooting oversampled 1080p out of the HDMI port. By setting the rec setting to 4k and HDMI out to 1080p. I use the ninja v when I am doing interviews or lighting stuff so I can take advantage of LUT monitoring and waveforms, etc. For run-and-fun BROLL though I usually use the Ninja Star. Keeps the setup light and small. As for lenses, to be honest I currently only have a Tamron 45mm 1.8 F-mount lens using the Nikon FTZ adapter. Looking to explains, however, and am strongly considering the Viltrox 24mm 1.8Z. Or maybe I will go with an f-mount Nikon 16-35 f4 as a nice affordable autofocus-capable ultra wide.2 points

Really? Compared with ‘The Latest Sony’, yeah, not in that league, but it’s not too shabby! But yes it’s a better image than the S5ii. In fact it’s better in every way other than AF or if size & weight are a priority. And it’s cheaper! I bought another a couple of weeks back, it’s that good. I use its AF all the time, but mainly to acquire focus in the first place and then flip to manual with the switches on the side of the lens that Sigma provides along with manual aperture control 🙌 I do have a need for reliable AF every now and again and the S5ii takes care of that, but at a pinch, even the S1H’s tracking is not bad if you use a few tricks…2 points

“Work” isn’t primarily film or video related. I make short films to illustrate the courses/lectures I teach at University - so it’s me talking at a fixed distance in front of a green screen and the P4k plus Nikon 24mm is perfect for my workflow. I have a “studio” set up and the P4k lives on the tripod. My recently acquired P6k has a Nikon 50-300mm attached (and bolted to a frame) so not easy to change. Given the price of BM’s pocket series it made sense for me to get the P6k for fun rather than dismantling the set up and using the 4k.1 point

Hey Kye, hope all is well! This is a great thread and I feel this way a lot. I haven't bought a new camera body in awhile, just been refining the packages for what I have. I haven't been filming much lately, but don't have any of the latest or greatest. Currently own/use: Nikon z5, (2) Samsung nx1's, samsung nx500, Panasonic g9, (2) black magic pocket OG's, Panasonic gx85, Nikon d800, Contax g1. The z5 and G1 have been my primary stills/fun cameras. nx1's and the nx500 are still my main video package. Been building up the pocket camera package for a bit. G9 has been awesome while I've had it. gx85 is mainly hooked up to my computer as a way overkill webcam. D800 has been kept because it still delivers the goods and can take advantage or the older/screwmount Nikon Glass I have.1 point -
A cam R5c, B cam R5, 3 insta360 (R, 1 inch and GO2) and an iPhone 13 (that I truly hate for photo and video with s..ty file system, worst workflow ever)1 point

Very awesome kit! The GH2's are so killer for the price! GH1's as well, you can get them for under $100 if you look hard enough! Such a nice 1080p image from those older Lumix MFT cams, back when I used a Panasonic G7 as my main camera I always liked the mojo I got from the 1080p image, despite it being pixel binned and a low bitrate it had surprisingly good detail and held up well all things considered. Would often use it instead of 4k to save filespace, and I always was happy with the results!1 point

Fuji X-H2S
Sharathc47 reacted to Attila Bakos for a topic
I could only download one example which did not have it but I don't want to base my opinion on one example only. Does anyone have downloadable 6.2k BRAW from the X-H2s? However people already confirmed to me that BRAW also has the stuttering issue so it's definitely a Fuji problem. In general I would prefer ProRes RAW since it's true raw in a sense that it's needs the same processing as a common raw file after it's decompressed. BRAW seems to be more processed with slightly less color detail, but I believe you'll only see it when pixel peeping. The obvious difference is that BRAW works in Resolve, which is a big plus given how large these files are, it can be a pain to convert ProRes RAW. But anyway both of them are unusable at the moment, I have a feeling that we only have raw for marketing reasons in this body. With the current issues and less DR it's garbage.1 point -

Times change, as does how people get into video production and videography. You're unable to see things from a perspective that isn't yours @Kisaha. If you're a 21 year old kid (that's how old he was when he got his first paid gig) that is offered $75 to film a theater performance because you happen to own a camera for a YouTube channel you're trying to get off the ground, you're not going to have the experience and knowledge of someone that has been doing it for years and years. You're also probably not going to turn that opportunity down, either, because that's a credit card payment for the camera you put on credit. I was only relaying how his path into videography began, and how he first purchased a camera that was limited and how that impacted his unexpected, but ultimately successful, transition into doing paid work. He now shoots with three A7siii bodies and is doing well for himself. His criticism of the ZV-E1 is pretty valid, because 5 years ago he would've been the target demo for this camera, probably purchased it, and found he'd spent $2200 on a camera that he couldn't use for the work he'd eventually end up doing. As he put it, there's dozens of better options that won't limit a person from following whatever path they end up taking, whether it's being a YouTuber or becoming interested in filmmaking or videography as a job. His perspective was different from mine, and obviously yours, so I figured it was worth sharing.1 point -

Sony New Camera Launch - 29th March 2023
IronFilm reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
As I said it might not be typical, but I don't think it's one rare case at all. I think quite a few YouTubers end up producing video work for others, whether it's a friend asking to film their kid's recital or a family member asking if they'd film their wedding. Once the ball gets rolling it can lead into something else. Many of us "blue collar videographers" started out as hobbyist and got our first paid gigs because we were known as "the video person" or "the person with the video camera." My first paid work was because as a 13 year old I'd bring my video camera to pro-wrestling shows to film for my own enjoyment and one time I was offered money in exchange for the footage. In many ways the aspiring YouTuber is the modern equivalent of that. To say that it's rare I just don't think is correct.1 point -

I was talking to a friend this morning who started out planning to be a YouTuber but ended up doing actual paid work and losing interest in YouTube. He's a Sony user and he gave me a different perspective for why this camera sucks and it is a pretty simple one: given it's limitations it can't grow with you. His first paid jobs were because people knew he did "that YouTube stuff" and they wondered if he could film something for them. He was of course stoked about it, but ended up having a problem: his A7iii was good for his YouTube channel but the 30 minute record limit didn't cut it for the theater productions he was asked to film. Suddenly the camera that he bought because all the YouTubers he wanted to emulate were using it, and that he bought on credit (he was 20 at the time and didn't know better), wasn't the right tool for the job. He was able to get around it when he found out the trick to remove the limit, but he still found it'd overheat sometimes. His parents eventually helped him buy an A7siii once they saw the potential in what he was doing, but it was a costly lesson. Obviously his experience might not be typical, but his point was that if he was just getting started now he'd probably buy this camera but end up regretting it because of it's limitations. People's intentions/priorities change over time. People buying this camera might only intend to use it for YouTube and short takes, but what happens when your co-worker offers to pay you to film their kid's play? Or you're asked to film your cousin's wedding? Anyway, it was an interesting perspective from someone that started out as a YouTuber that I thought I'd share.1 point -

archaic motion? 24p is still the current cine standard. double frame rate output is literally what is called the soap opera effect: Creating frames in-between the 24 original frames makes the movie (24FPS) look like a soap opera (30/60FPS), and this is something that many viewers don't like. Why does 60fps look like a soap opera? It's due to motion. Soap Operas use cheaper cameras that shoot in 60 FPS rather than film that is 24 FPS. Basically, you've become accustomed to the dreamlike motion of 24 FPS being interpolated for 60 Hz TVs and now attribute higher frame-rates like 48 FPS to that of a lower quality production. haven't we been through this before? not sure why you're getting so offended, you're the one throwing the word "cinematic" around. Sure takes more than a LUT to achieve the look. correct fps is a good place to start but hey keep ignoring this advice and do as you please. just don't get mad if people call out the videoish look of such motion, I'm far from being alone on this. in fact you are probably the only person I know around here or even on YT who consistently outputs 60p on a cine cam.1 point -
