  1. Hey friends, now with the latest built from Bilal and Dannes achievements before let´s get some Raw magic started. Thanks to our friend @ZEEK the latter are well reported, the former has been posted about here by our friend @QuickHitRecord The challenge would be up to us to make up. So what are your suggestions, what kinda challenge could that be? I think there are plenty Magic Lantern lovers and Canon owners. I got a EOS M for 75EU about a year ago and a 5D2 for 150. Still, I have not filmed anything with it yet. I feel pumped to try out my EOS M though with the latest built from Bilal, since even Danne seemed to like it. Some 50D cats here? Put some dirty fungus M42 Meyer Goerlitz on your cam and give us that Keny Ty look but not in filthy 420 8bit but in gorgeous RAW glory! 5D3 queens and kings? Mercer, you go! Some keywords for our magic fun tour: experimental, 3min narrative, video essay with photographic beauty, cinema verité exitement, locked shots parade..camer So all camera cats with the love for the some Raw image magic, let´s get our and your jazz on with magic lantern! 🙂

  2. Great idea. I'm psyched about this latest EOS-M build but I need a little push to get moving with this camera. I think the simpler the prompt, the better. I propose calling it something like the 'No More Camera Tests Magic Lantern Challenge', make the criteria that all entries be scripted, and leave the rest open to interpretation. And then we all share at the same time, perhaps at the end of May?

I meant I guess this is the reason why people complain or worry about this camera, not exactly because its low light capabilities. The crop for getting slowmotion. On the other hand, for the newer ZV-E1 FF camera people will have access to 4K 120p with a minimum restriction under a meaningless crop but the concern then will be the overheating issues from the Sony's hammer... Phew :- )

yep 24p footage will aways look more cinematic than 60p footage as far as motion no matter the camera, sensor size etc. not sure what is so hard for you to understand. No, I'm just replying to people like you that keep quoting me on the subject. It's ok btw, we don't have to agree but if this topic upsets you so much, just stop arguing about it like the other guy did. we had already moved on until you came back to it..

Well sorry to disappoint ya mate, but what isn't clickbait on YT these days? 🙃 Title aside, I think his point is fairly valid, let's face it S35 has generally been at a disadvantage when it comes to low-light vs FF so having access to these new APS-C T1.05 lenses can certainly help mitigate low-light and shallow DoF when compared to FF. Yet another solution may be to use a speed booster. Also C300ii & FS7 are fairly old cameras, even the Alexa Classic/Mini was never really considered a "lowlight cinema champ". It gets noisy above 800 despite its huge latitude. Its a camera meant for controlled environments. In this sense, the FX30 could potentially beat it at its 2500 higher base ISO. But the Alexa sensor uses DGO tech not dual base ISO so really apples and oranges. And the C70's DGO handles differently than the Alexa ALEV, cleaner shadows but harsher highlight rolloff. I'm also not sure what you mean by FX30 is one stop less than "modern FF counterpart"? Because the A7S/FX3/FX6 FF sensor surely is more than one stop better at high ISO with its 12800 higher base ISO vs 2500. Depends what value we're comparing. Now of course in the end noise tolerance is subjective and some cameras have more pleasant noise than others. NR is also a big factor. One positive thing about the FX30 is it apparently has less aggressive NR than its FF Sony counterparts.

Yeah, it's yet another example of how spoiled we are. I came from the world of camcorders, so people talking about M43 being terrible in low light made me chuckle.

That youtube video above is almost unworthy of being posted by a beloved forum member such as Django. "Biggest flaw", what clickbait nonsense. Lowlight on the FX30, as we have noted before, is about one stop less than the modern FF counterparts. So it is a lowlight achiever in S35 terms, better than C300II, than FS7. No mushyness but "grain". Great lowlight camera. No mushyness is a novelty, not many cameras offer in that price range, nor timecode, nor pro reliability and such. Now, C70 in RAWlight is the overall lowlight cinema champ after the classic Alexa Alev sensor and very close regarding quality of colour rendition, latitude and dynamic range, if I trust the judgement from german testsite slashcam and heresay from dop buddies. Same sensor as C300III. For the money, trust Ironfilm and others, FX30 is not to beat as a pro S35 B or A video cam in the Sony system.

The FX30 has low light performance people would have given their kidney for a decade or two ago. The fault is with the user, not the camera, if you can't get good images out of it.

  10. To me it seems the new build works almost flawlessly, atleast for my use. Supposedly there have been some issues in photo mode, and with AF, but I never use those things on the Eos M (I think it is one of the worst cameras for photography ever made, especially when using af). I get continuous recording in 2.8k raw (2.9 crop as the bmpcc original), 11bit 25fps, 2.39:1. In overexposed areas the timer turns orange (indicating that it can not go on forever), but when going back to normal exposure it goes back to green (continuous). If I would use 24fps I guess I could maybe go up to 12 bit. In 10bit it is always clean. Haven't tried it though, and probably won't do any extensive testing, as I have what I need now. The same settings as above are ok for continuous recording at 5.2k raw for me. Haven't tried dual ISO as I see no need for it. The preview is full screen and real time for both modes. Rolling shutter is an obvious issue in 5.2k mode (which is a 1.6 crop from full frame), a bit less so in the 2.8k raw mode. Good rolling shutter in the standard, almost fhd, raw mode, but that mode has a lot of aliasing. I would say the eos m is perfectly useable now, especially as a super-16 camera. I also really like the mlvapp. You could look at it as a cheaper alternative to the BMPCC original, but with better battery life and manual focus aids. Watch the build walkthrough if you are interested in trying it out:

Ditto. And only to testify it, at home, ALL members of the family notice it and complain against the Xiaomi's 'smart ' : D TV which is unable to know what realm of motion pictures fill the cup of educated people used to more than a century of such universe. The interesting part of the story is people truly need history of cinema to understand something while they don't need to appreciate classic movies to reject what looks like crappy dictatorship for real in turn. That's what I am supposed to realize from what I am used to hear back home without needing to be the first one to protest when the display misbehaves set from default. Stop the bloody automation. All made without scrutiny of an educated guess rather than humans invariably refusing to see themselves as stupid and claiming the need not necessarily just for once instead. No idea what each of both is more critical. :- )

  13. I own two C70s, a Red One MX, and even a 5D iii that also runs ML with more stability and at higher resolutions. I keep asking myself why I even care about this cheap little camera that I have never shot an actual project with, and why I haven't sold it yet. On the surface, it's because I think that once the ML firmware gets straightened out, the EOS-M has the potential to be one of the few raw-capturing cameras that can work with 16mm lenses. But it's dawned on me that it's not so much the camera as it is the community collaboration around this camera. The "movement" (mostly happening in the FB group) is reminiscent of the early days of DSLR and mirrorless video, when people were all trying to squeeze every inch of quality out of these cameras that were never intended for cinematography. Nowadays, every camera has great IQ and a pleothera of custom-fitted accessories and perfected workflows. But 10-15 years ago, there were no dedicated cages or practical battery solutions and the cameras were full of quirks. You had to lean on the community for workarounds if you wanted to have a chance of creating anything worthwhile with these difficult cameras. Despite all of the hurdles, some people were able to do it and it always felt like a team victory. I think what's going on with the EOS-M reflects the evolving hacks for the GH1 and GH2 in lot of ways. There is no dedicated cage for this camera either. Plug it into a battery and you have to find a place to hide the unruly adapter cable. Moire and aliasing abound in the lower resolutions. Rolling shutter is horrendous in the higher ones. The ergonomics make the GH cameras look like a dream. And it just doesn't make sense to throw a lot of money at a defunct $150 camera, which really ups the ante for DIY solutions. People share their rigging experiments freely (with lots of 3D printed parts), as well as their footage since the software is constantly being tweaked and improved. That group is experimenting, tinkering, and collaborating like it's 2011. It's the fun side of camera geekery all over again.

  14. I am speechless... this is ML cinema camera series 2.0. Yes indeed, this deserves every single donation they can raise. It is the very least decent thing we all users can do. - EAG :- )
