Whenever I'm doing interviews I check to see what direction the light is going in and therefor what directions the camera might point. Then I find a background I like and frame that up with the camera at the height of the interviewee's head and at around 70-135mm full frame equivalent. Then I place the person within the frame, moving them forward or back, left and right until I get the composition I want. If it's an off-centre framing then I'll get them to angle their hips and shoulders towards the other side of the frame slightly. And I always try to shoot people standing as I think it looks better - they're less likely to slump or slouch than when sitting. This works well until I get someone who hops and jumps about and gradually crawls closer to the camera. One thing I've learned is that there's no perfect interview location. But good enough is good enough! Available light, S5II, EF 70-200 f4.

  2. I have shot many videos with both cameras (not borrowed for one week from Sony). I thought I would like the fx30 better, since I am a bit of a stickler on resolution, and the fx30 oversamples 4K from the full sensor. But, what I found is I just like the look of the full-frame 4K from the fx3. And the fx3 4K 120p is uncompromised, while that from the fx30 is clearly noisier and has a big extra crop. With the fx3 one can mix together slow motion (from 4K 120p) with any regular-motion frames (in my case, the dreaded 4K 60p). The "big" fx3 disadvantage for me is that the lenses for the full-frame fx3 are so much bigger. I need to travel light, and also cannot poke big rigs into crowds or in some travel spots. Thus, I tried out the fx3 with the smallest zoom lens there is the "kit" 28-60 collapsible lens. It is slow and has limited range. So, can you get shot variety from it? - Clear Image Zoom though helps it get to 90mm essentially losslessy. Do you sacrifice image quality from this cheap lens, including subject isolation from shallow DOF? I took this combo to Bryant Park to capture the Spring blooms and the activities. The video mixes slow motion and regular motion (some bocce and pingpong clips are in slow motion 2X). I was pleased with the results. The one issue is that I cannot smoothly manually zoom the kit lens, and I am normally very good at manually zooming. Clear Image Zoom gives me smooth variable-speed zooms, though, but only up to 1.5X. Note this video does not use any of the new firmware features - this video could have been shot with the a7siii.

  3. OK, so I think I've decided that I'm going to stick with my Rode stereo omni mic as I really like the sound from that. I just ordered myself a nice vintage camera bag that the whole setup can go in and out of nice and easily. So I didn't have to spend €300 in the end and I can still get sound that I like. Today has been an education for me. Many hours spent on YouTube with my headphones on. The best test video I watched was this one. Ignore the thumbnail, it's a slow paced, contemplative, walking video (is that a genre now?) with lots of nice ambient sound.

  4. I didn't film the above examples, but I assume they're better than what I can provide! All my online examples feature heavily mixed audio from multiple cameras (one of which is a shotgun mic) with commentary/voice overs and music. I will go through my raw footage and see if I can get some good examples though! The Sennheiser I'm sure produces a better sound overall sound but for under $100 these blew away the internal microphones, and accomplished what I needed them to!

  5. I've found it's pretty decent personally! I was scared because all the reviews for it were OLD and on DSLRs with crappy preamps, or featured people trying to use it as a vlogging mic, but I used it on my GH5 and now one of my S5s and I think it does a pretty good job. I've found it translates the arena sound pretty well, which is what I wanted.

  6. You should be able to find one for cheap! I stole that idea from @Mattias Burling when I was filming with the OG Pocket!

Working on it! Last year, I shot and produced 32 (all weddings by the way so if that bores you, look away now!) and I was a little sporadic in my use of lighting for all kinds of reasons* Early, but slow start this year and kicking myself I did not start as I meant to go, ie, again, not full use as intended. Next job, next week, I am going to light light light it and keep on doing so for the future. This is the way. *Mainly long lay off over Winter and first couple of jobs always a bit rusty. That’s my excuse anyway… 🤨

I think these are really good too, but i think they would look even better if you had the darker side of the face towards the camera. You’re looking for natural contrast in light which is what it’s all about, but if you put the person from still 1 in the same position as the lady from still 2 with the same background and lighting condition as you had before, that would be something i would prefer myself. The same with still 2, if you just put her in the right side of the frame, and rotate her 180 degrees.

you guys are getting a monitor pic from me since i’m not grading the last project i dp’d. i think lighting wise this looks nice, but framing wise i would set up the camera a bit higher, and then angle it down slightly to make this man look a bit better. I personally wouldnt center frame interviews, but i don’t necessarily mind it either. Ideally i also wouldn’t show anything beneath the logo of the football team to get a proper medium close up. I think most of your work looks good, and this is personal preference, i think you should consider stopping down more. I think you would benefit from having to shoot at f/5.6 on that big of a sensor and getting to see your background a bit more.

Pro or non-pro, reconsider it. For years I went naked priding myself on being a ‘natural light shooter’, but recently I have seen the light. Literally. At all times indoors and low light, I use at least one LED light and quite often a second. I use one super lightweight light stand plus a table top tripod. Neither the Rotolight Neo 3 or Falconeyes are exactly THE last word in lighting, but they do the job I need them to do which is most fill lighting for naturally back lit subjects. They take seconds to put up and I rarely move them once set. On camera, video or stills, I have a pair of tiny 4x AA powered LED’s off Amazon that cost about 30 each. So even if the former is too much for you, I would at least consider the latter and use it on camera or off plonked on a piece of furniture or something. Even simple things like a plate of food are transformed by a tiny light sitting on the table pointing at it on a flat plane angle. Takes seconds, costs peanuts.

  12. A few thoughts... The Rode Video Micro or V-Mic D4 Mini etc can be good options - watch comparison videos to get real-life examples of how they compare, especially their relative output levels (as you want to get the most signal out of the mic so you can turn down the internal preamps) The shock mounts are usually bulky and fragile, especially for putting into a camera bag, but I've seen alternative mountings (for example using adhesive velcro) but there might be a compact solution that fits into the hotshoe You should test the internal mics as they're often higher quality than you think People seem to think that the EQ of a microphone is what defines its quality - just listen to how people talk when comparing mics, but it's one of the easiest things to change in post so don't fall for that Be aware that AI can now clean-up audio sources to basically eliminate all the background noise and retain only the voice (Resolve now has this built-in) One thing you can't fix in post is directionality - early in my journey in video I recorded the kids riding go-karts around the track and while I was recording I thought the video would contain audio of their karts going around the track but when I got home I found it mostly contained the person sitting behind me in the stand talking about how her hairdresser had broken up with her boyfriend or whatever The dead-cat can be swapped for a trimmed down foam microphone cover designed for a large shotgun mics from eBay to create a much more slimline profile Happy to elaborate on any of these so just ask 🙂

  13. I'd of course want to suggest the Sanken CSM1 😉 But more seriously, I would suggest the Deity V Mic D4 https://deitymic.com/products/v-mic-d4/

This maybe the case, and it helps marketing as well. Putting a professional sensor into a consumer (or prosumer) model makes the camera much easier to sell. But yeah, for those vloggers who often shoot at environments where absolutely no lighting is allowed and whose work doesn't require a good image, rather it's more important to get the shot, good ISO performance can be a big plus. I think enthusiasts who just want to film their family or daily lives will also appreicate the extra lowlight capability. Though back to the topic, I don't think the FX30, FX3 or the A7S3 is necessarily a perfect choice for those users. Unless they want a camera that they can grow their videography and filmmaking skills with.

  15. Ditto. Only difference to the standard set up is I swapped out the dead cat for a foam windshield instead. Just as with the Rode Wireless Go, I don’t use the result from it as anything but a base line for my lav mics. Actually, having said that, I do sometimes use the direct result from the Go if I have attached it to a speaking mic and it’s good enough, but it’s not meant for the best quality audio. I do like the Micro though because it’s very small and you can never forget to charge it!

  17. For such occasions I actually just use the built in microphone of my S5 with a self-made mini wind-muff stuck on it using double-sided tape. For capturing ambient sound it is good enough and not much worse than an external omnidirectional microphone. I'm actually always a bit surprised by the quality of the microphones Panasonic puts in their cameras. This has also been true for their camcorders. You may tweak the frequency response to taste in post. Using a fairly low recording level so the auto-limiter doesn't need to kick in also helps. In my experience, when you want to capture some specific sound like someone talking to camera, having a directional microphone on top of the camera is not helping much due to poor placement of the microphone. But if someone else has positive experiences I'm curious to know as well.

  18. Just got the R8 today and use it for an Indian Ceremony, shot most of it in 4K50P and the heating indicator only goes up to 1 bar so that is not bad. So much lighter vs the R5 on gimbal, I can felt the weight saving!

  19. Hey friends, now with the latest built from Bilal and Dannes achievements before let´s get some Raw magic started. Thanks to our friend @ZEEK the latter are well reported, the former has been posted about here by our friend @QuickHitRecord The challenge would be up to us to make up. So what are your suggestions, what kinda challenge could that be? I think there are plenty Magic Lantern lovers and Canon owners. I got a EOS M for 75EU about a year ago and a 5D2 for 150. Still, I have not filmed anything with it yet. I feel pumped to try out my EOS M though with the latest built from Bilal, since even Danne seemed to like it. Some 50D cats here? Put some dirty fungus M42 Meyer Goerlitz on your cam and give us that Keny Ty look but not in filthy 420 8bit but in gorgeous RAW glory! 5D3 queens and kings? Mercer, you go! Some keywords for our magic fun tour: experimental, 3min narrative, video essay with photographic beauty, cinema verité exitement, locked shots parade..camer So all camera cats with the love for the some Raw image magic, let´s get our and your jazz on with magic lantern! 🙂
