A lovely American robin has made her nest by my front door, so i have declared a moratorium on using that door and the stairs that lead up to it haha What if i wanted to put a lil camera there to follow her progress? I know you guys have these things – from Ring to more security type cameras. i know nothing abt them i dont care abt the image i just want to see what shes up to w/o disturbing her lol thoughts?2 points

I played with the Ptools hack but could never get it working on my GF3. Unfortunately lots of the information online seems to have been lost and the things I did find took a good deal of searching, reading entire threads and following all links etc. The GF3 would be spectacular with a bit-rate bump - 17Mbps wasn't really enough for 1080p. For anyone reading that hasn't seen them, here's a few from the mighty GF3: and here's a random comparison of JPG vs Video with a few lenses / filters: Looking back on the above, I remember the difference in detail being a lot more between the JPGs and the video - maybe the 1080p YT compression really softened it. I've done a lot more videos with it, both tests as well as real edits, and my conclusions were that: If you use it without a stabilised lens or with any lens that isn't razor sharp then it's only good for a Super-8 style final product due to the soft rendering and micro-jitters If you use it in mixed lighting or with low-CRI lighting then you're going to have a very bad time colour correcting in post If you use it in any sort of low-light situation then it might not even get up to Super-8 level of video AND you're going to have a bad time in post DAMN ITS SMALL!!!! When paired with the Olympus 15mm F8 body cap lens it is almost as pocketable as a smartphone, and if used outside when the sun is up, it'll do a great job of Super-8 style videos. It is usable with the 12-35/2.8 lens, but if you're going to have a setup that large, you may as well take the GX85 or P2K. Here's a shot of some of my collection - the GF3 is the second smallest, only larger than the mighty (pink) J20 that was what I entered into the camera challenge. It was great looking back over these GF3 videos - fun times!2 points

Hah, tasty post and read! Thank you, kye! Maybe I will give it try with the hack for the G3. But maybes are wait-bes.:) @kye We should still pull off a challenge of these small auto beasts. Darn, the GF3 is small. Thinking about getting a GM5 for the nice sensor, design, the legendary GF1 style back wheel and G6 quality manual video. That´s a maybe:)1 point

Yeah right "yeah right S1 video AF for sports". Nor about posting about sports pictures. I posted my good deal of stuff. Posted photos and a test video this month. Maybe you post some cool video for a change instead of grabs all the time. I didnt write about "S1 video AF for sports", but about general use for photos pulled from video. So, "yeah right", 10bit 420 24Mpix is not too bad for amateur use or in a pinch. Nice examples of your cameras AF for sports. Professional work. I gave it a like. I posted some photos with my GX85 two days ago in another thread. No sports, no AF. 🙂1 point

Re: Print a Photo from Video (4k 60)?

I film professional wrestling using two (now three) S5 bodies. The AF is more than adequate. The biggest obstacle to getting good stills from the footage isn't the AF but the shutter speed. I film using a 180 degree shutter angle, but I'm sure I could get good results by adjusting it if I didn't care about the impact it'd have on the footage. When there isn't a ton of movement I'll take a still to use for social media, but the motion blur during heavy action just isn't flattering. Here are some ones I've taken for social media/YouTube thumbnails. These are downloaded from Facebook since I'm on my phone but it gives you a general idea. I can post higher resolution versions tomorrow if anyone wants them.1 point -
You're right about you needing the 300/2.8 to get some background defocus for those shots, but it really depends on the subject distances involved. Your shots are of a sports ground that is absolutely enormous when compared with a lot of other very common sports grounds, like basketball, various forms of football, lacrosse, etc. My sports photography was on Australian Football fields, which seem to be significantly larger than almost any other sports field, so I struggled with lens reach and had issues manually focusing etc. This isn't always the case - if you're shooting a basketball game then it's a whole other ballgame....(sorry - couldn't resist!)1 point

@kye hmmm... interesting. no, not seeing that option on the clip above. maybe they cancelled the trial after your feedback 🤣1 point

I like FF look shallow dof so personally I would take R8 instead of an R7 also R8 4k 60 is supersampled definitely better quality…. a few here seems to prefer the R7. I’m not a Sony shooter but they have really good camera too with great AF, so does Nikon (in case of Nikon for the moment only the expensive ones have good video for sports). Ideally you want a 4k or up, 60 fps not pixel binned with really good video AF But the first question should be: do you own already any lenses?1 point

I won´t feed the spec hungry beast, that this thread is. But one thing I wanna say: For fine art stuff in my home it would be perfectly fine for me to do a large print from good 2K or HD source. 4K Alexa 35, yes please! Actually I got some cool old footage from my G6 I have always been wanting to do some stills from. I guess I´ll just do that. Not joking. Cheapest cam to fullfill video for photo wants would be a used S1 with its opengate FF goodness. 24 Mpix, 30p, 10bit 420, just like big juicy HQ 10bit Jpegs. So, gotta get outta here, freaking specs race is exhausting.:)1 point

@Evgeniy85 I got a LX15 myself but was a bit underwhelmed by its output compared to a G6, G7 or GX85. After revising the example from above I might give it a try again. I had posted it here before. I was amazed back then when I found it and I still am. The material just looks like some of the best footage I have seen from a GX85 or G7. Sensor estate in 4K on this cam is 2/3 inch only, so quarter the area of MFT. Same relation like MFT to FF. But since MFT is faring pretty good in that regard this camera should compare well to mft 8bit cams as well. It does pretty good going by the example above. Here is another one by the same artist, Rec709 8bit 420 glory, 2/3 inch prowess :)1 point

Exactly the opposite you want for sport.... shallow DoF is key as most of the background is quite distracting.... you would probably not see any pro sport shooter with m4/3... A couple of examples from today, 8k RAW 60fps 300 2.8 1/2000, imagine these at 150 5.6 they would not pop..... At the end if you want large DoF and portable why not use a phone? But if you want photo and video that pop a R8 or similar + EF adapte + used EF 70-200 2.8 Btw the new helmet AF of the new R5c firmware is really good, not perfect but really good.1 point

But there isn't a lot of glass from original and third parties. That's the problem. And since it's a mirrorless mount with a shorter flange distance than EF, the ability to implement internal NDs will be a bit more difficult. I suppose BM can get into the lens adapter business and produce adapters that have some kind of internal ND system.1 point

Blackmagic to join L Mount alliance ?
foliovision reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Out of all the mirrorless mounts it makes the most sense that they'd go with the L-mount due to its open nature. There aren't really many alternatives.1 point -
It appears to only be on videos uploaded at 1080p, not those with 1440 or 4K etc. I could also be in a test group potentially.. Wow, the option has now disappeared for me! It was on a bunch of videos I checked, but I remember specifically that it was on this one. Have a look for yourself: Maybe my feedback got me kicked out of the test group lol.1 point
