  2. If you convert the log gamma to ACES CC gamma, which is straight, you can use a master color wheel or master offset control to make accurate changes to WB. Another (unrelated) interesting thing to note is that photos tend to be more contrasty than video. Historically, this is probably due to its intended output mediums: print versus TV screen. Even nowadays the default ACR/Lightroom curve is way contrastier than what most video people grade to. Worth bearing in mind for sending photos extracted from videos to a client. And for making prints.

  3. Shot from 8K 60P (N)RAW video frame. 1/125th second shutter, which is ok for video motion at this frame rate and enough speed for portraits (people micro move). "Developed" in DaVinci Resolve Studio. RAW video then gives the best of both worlds?

  4. My Connect and AtomX Cast bundle has shown up so I'm going to have a play with it over the next couple of days with a couple of Zoom products. It only supporting two BLE devices (via a new firmware update no less!) is a bit of a nonsense though. If they are going to move forward with it then they could definitely do with a new version of either the Blue or the One that has both BLE and LTC and I'm also hoping Atomos can persuade the likes of Panasonic to add support for the BLE timecode into their cameras as Nikon have done.

  5. There are a few cat fights from time to time and a bit of bitch slapping, but generally there isn’t too much BS here. Lumix BS1H aside. They really did not think that one through…

  6. Its more Raw Patrol than Paw Patrol here.

  7. The only difference raw would make is the ability to grade the image. The rest is the same. But this was why I was interested in the Nikon Z9 with it’s ability to shoot stills and shoot less storage heavy video, but when I needed both photo and video at the same time, shoot 8k raw for both. 6k 50/60p would do it for me however. I think… I need to rest later this year when I have the time.

    An end of an era...

If it had a mic input I wouldn't have sold it because then I could've used it in most of my work. I really do miss it, but it was hard to justify keeping for the couple times a year when I needed to be able to have a more discreet set up, whether it was because I was filming somewhere I wasn't supposed to or because I just wanted to keep a low profile. In most cases the GH5 without the cage and stuff was discreet enough.

    An end of an era...

"The best camera is the one you have with you" is often translated as "the best camera is the one that doesn't get confiscated by security for looking too professional" 🙂 As I've mentioned previously, on my trip to South Korea earlier this year I favoured the GX85 + 14mm F2.5 pancake lens combo over the GH5, simply due to the size while filming in public and private spaces (like museums, etc). I would have liked more flexibility and since then have worked out that the best two lenses for my purposes are the 12-32mm pancake and the 45-150mm tele - the two kit zooms that were originally paired with the GX85. In terms of the quality of the files, it's adequate for my purposes, but I can understand if it doesn't meet the needs of others. Certainly I would appreciate a few added features if I was given a magic wand, but I'm ok with it how it is, and I certainly wouldn't make it any larger to accommodate any of the additional things I'd ask for.

  10. Also from that thread, a nice mod of the Blackmagic Pocket: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=173840&sid=d607770c079289f57c9615ae7e34fa1c&start=500#p957558

  11. From John Brawley: "No. Canon, like Sony won't license their mount. It's an open secret that Red did an IP swap for the ability to use RF mount on some of their cameras and in exchange, Canon can make their own internal raw codec that can be used in-camera. It's easy to test the theory. Name a single camera (not lens) with E mount that isn't made by Sony? Same for Canon with RF (excluding Red)?" https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=173840&start=450#p956719

Sigma 16-28mm f2.8 L mount I haven't really had much time to do anything with it but these are example grabs from 4K footage with the new to me Panasonic S5ii from the first couple of days after I picked it up. Initial impressions are that it is fast focusing, sharp and although it is absolutely not distortion free (particularly on the wide end) but should definitely be considered by anyone with an E/L mount camera that needs a fast, constant aperture, very wide zoom.

I tested quite extensively over the weekend, let’s start with the good: “Enables to detect heads facing sideways or backwards, or in situations such as when wearing a helmet” This one is not perfect but really good and for the type of filming that I do it makes a difference, first it does not lose the head when moving away but more important it works with helmets. These in the past I would have to stop down to 5.6 to keep the face in focus, now with the face tracking with helmet I can shoot at 2.8. Screen grab, this one was almost impossible before as the focus would have been on the horse head instead of her. this one before it would have simply lose the focus “Improves switching time between Video/Photo mode” This one is much faster now, was not a big issue for me but now it should not be an issue for most people. “Enables to change WFM size” and “Enables to change WFM/Vector scope opacity”. This is very practical, especially on the tiny screen. Just tap the WFM and it becomes bigger, tap it again goes smaller. Now the not so good: Face/Helmet does not work on S&F mode so no 100/120 fps face tracking…. R5 can… “Adds Power Saving Mode” this comes with some limitations so only 4k XAVC, but works 24 to 60fps…. and indeed it extends quite a bit the battery. So seems all good but the implementation is a bit cumbersome as you can turn it on only when all settings matches and if you want to let say go to S&F mode 120 you cannot you need first to disable it…. T his camera needs absolutely customs shooting modes it would make all of this so easier to go from 8K RAW 24, to XAVC save mode 24 to then XAV S&F 120 and so on…. You need to change many menu items that is insane…. For example, for this scene I wanted to quickly change to 120fps for a few seconds and then back to 24 and with power saving you cannot do it quickly.... Overall not much to complain Canon added quite a few of very useful features. I hope they will further improve the camera. My wishes for the next one are customs shooting modes and face tracking in S&F 120, even better if you could select the area of the frame where face tracking is active similar to the R3.

  14. Right, so I've unpacked it, connected it and had a go at syncing a Zoom F2-BT and a Zoom H3-VR to it. Absolutely nothing happening with either of them. Updated the firmware on my Ninja V which in turn updated the firmware on the Connect. Updated the firmware on both Zoom devices then verified that BLE works correctly on both of them with their respective Zoom Bluetooth control apps. Still nothing. Then came across this comment on Atomos's YouTube channel under a promo for the Connect. That was from 10 months ago so you'd imagine that if there was an issue that Atomos would have addressed it by now, particularly as the new firmware update that I put on the Ninja V for it was from only a week ago... I then found this absolute bombshell on Atomos FAQ section, also, you will note, from a week ago. Unbelievable. They had been pimping the fuck out of the Connect with AtomX Switcher module bundle for the whole of May and have casually forgotten to point out until last week (the deal ended at the end of May) that it doesn't work with any Zoom recorders despite it being known from that YouTube comment for ten months. That will only be the recorders that the vast majority of people (myself included) have bought this thing to work with then. This incompatibility thing is a bit fishy as well considering that the Zoom products do work with Atomos' own UltraSync Blue and AtomX Sync modules which of course themselves also work with the Connect. What the fuck is up with that company ? As I said in a previous post, there is always something with them isn't there? In this case, it looks like you have to buy an UltraSync Blue to act as a bridge if you want to use Zoom products or wait for some vague possible maybe firmware update from Zoom.
