  1. Just saying there exists proper Panasonic cine cameras with V-Log etc. An L-mount BMD cam would have different log and color science so not really an upgrade path to Panny users imo. I do wish/hope Panny comes out with an (L-mount) EVA-2 or something..

  2. If I was Blackmagic, I’d skip the L mount and be beating a path to Nikon’s door to use the Z mount. Natively, you can get fast Z primes up to 800mm so there is a much broader range there whereas L mount tops out at 135mm but it’s the adaptability where it scores. Adapters for EF with autofocus, E mount with autofocus, even any manual focus lens with M mount and deeper mount can have autofocus too and even PL mount with integral variable ND filter. Last but by no means least F mount with full autofocus, something which no other mount can offer. Between these adapters a customer for this speculated BM camera could use pretty much any lens they’ve acquired over the years with full autofocus. Minus X mount and of course L mount itself but weirdly with the MFT to E mount you can even use those lenses too. Z mount is hands down the most versatile mount around* with the added bonus of BM not having to deal with Leica who, let’s not forget, wouldn’t do firmware to make their cameras compatible with an adapter from one of the actual members of the alliance. My MC-21 still isn’t and won’t ever be compatible with my Leica T or SL. Nikon are unlikely to get into the true cinema camera market so there is less perceived challenge versus Panasonic who are very likely to want to do so with an L mount cinema offering in the near future. *This amazing and comprehensive compatibility didn’t of course stop me somewhat hypocritically not buying into Z mount and spending all my money that I’d intended to use on increasing my L mount collection of lenses instead 🙂

  3. S1H’s are becoming ever more affordable. I just checked the current trade in on mine vs a new S5iix and it’s dropped about 600 euros in the last 3 months! Very robust and capable though.

  4. For the record, I know Panasonic makes great cinema cameras. None of them except one box camera are within the L mount ecosystem. The lens ecosystem is in my opinion way more important to a buying decision than the the type of log it shoots, especially when Blackmagic and current Panasonic color science are super similar, especially if you use Resolve CSTs.

  6. Time for us to ditch Sound Mixing etc and become "social media influencers"???

  7. This is the exact reason they made the GH5S. It was a non-IBIS companion to the GH5, designed to be used on gimbals and other mounts.

  8. Well now here’s a curve ball… So back whenever it was that the X was officially announced, I preordered a pair. The wait time for France was long so I cancelled and bought another used S5ii. But I just received notification that my new X came into stock, they took the funds and arrives tomorrow. I thought I had cancelled both but what with them being French and all… Aaaaaaargh… I could send it straight back, or keep it, order a battery grip (needs it for the 70-200 f4) and sell the S1H with its battery grip. Financially, it’s little difference, just the cost of the grip really. The pros are; smaller, lighter, faster, newer camera plus all 3 bodies identical (except aesthetically) and I can bake in my preferred LUT. Cons; can’t think of any actually other than it would mean saying sayonara to my S1H.

  9. I think one very important bonus of this alliance would be the fact that it gives Panasonic a very important missing piece in their ecosystem: a truly professional cinema/ENG camera with 12-bit, XLRs, docu-style body etc. If you're buying into an ecosystem for the first time Sony offers such a great upgrade path for starting one-man bands with the A7-IV, FX3, 6, 9, Venice. No matter what level you start at you can always upgrade while keeping your lenses. Same goes for Canon. Panasonic really misses that at the moment. Panasonic currently offers some of the best hybrid camera's on the market and then after that there's nothing.

  10. I’d argue modern hybrid cameras are noisy too unless using heavy internal noise reduction. Shadows are always noisy at base iso. You gotta over expose to negate that. for example on my pana S1, for a noise free image, I would overexpose by 2 stops. Pretty much the same thing on my Alexa, I’ll shoot at 200 iso if I want it completely clean.

  12. Sony missed a huge opportunity here - could've added some front facing cooling fans for that sexy "hair in the wind" look for vloggers and solved the overheating issue.
