  1. A new blog post: https://www.eoshd.com/news/oppenheimer-why-christopher-nolan-uses-a-flip-phone/ It is interesting that the same technology that enables modern life, also at the same time destroys us.

  2. But if you are Christopher Nolan, you don’t have to be on social media to tout your wares because everyone in the industry knows your résumé. And you can afford to fly to Ireland in your private jet to hand deliver the script to Tommy Shelby in person. I was asked last week if I could drop in to Bordeaux next week to meet a couple who might be interested in using my services. Yeah, 15 hour round trip driving so 2 days for a zero commitment chat. If they even turned up… 🤪 But otherwise no fan of social media myself, other than for 2 purposes. A. Not having the status of Nolan, touting my wares to prospective punters. B. Sharing pics with friends & family. But I could happily live in a world where social media did not exist.

  3. Yeah I had the same concern watching YT reviews before I bought an R7, I think it's mainly the users though, not the camera. I have both the R7 and the Lumix S1 plus som GH5s. Definitely a bit lower DR on the Canon compared to the S1, but not a big deal overall. Watching where you put your exposure and doing a good rolloff curve in post is much more important than actual numbers in my opinion when it comes to DR though. Seems pretty close to the GH5s IMO

  5. Yes that would be interesting… I’m doing a job this next weekend mostly using 6k 30p log with a 1975 Carl Zeiss 40-80mm f3.5 lens as a test to: A. See if it works for me in principle which I think it should as I like very much the test results so far…but nothing but a real world job will really answer that one. B. To see the potential for how it then might work going forward to any S1H replacement, but if that camera does not come or meet my spec requirements, then… C. A flip to a Nikon Z9 + Z8 pairing as currently they are the only available cameras that meet my ‘next gen’ spec, plus along with Sony, the only one’s that have the lenses that suit my needs most. All things considered, Nikon are currently ahead of the rest for me, but we’ll see.

    Canon Highlights?

I haven't reviewed the current batch of cameras so not really. Realistically unless you have the cameras yourself then you need to find a source online where someone has done latitude tests. CineD.com does good ones, so that's a good place to start. For example, here are a few cameras under exposed and pushed back: But when reviewing these you have to also compare how far over each camera can do as well, as different cameras put middle grey in different places. You'll also note that the Sigma FP uses different notation ("ETTR" vs "stops under") because they didn't know where to put middle grey and so compared to a different scale. Like many things in cameras - it can't be reduced to a single number so you have to do the analysis and comparison yourself because half the benefit of the information is the understanding that you get in figuring out how to compare them yourself.

  8. Peter Doyle (colourist on Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc) speaks about how closely we can reproduce the colours in the real world. Spoiler: no. (linked to the relevant timestamp)

    Canon Highlights?

I have also swapped from reviewing DR figures to looking at latitude testing, and even did some latitude tests of my own cameras as they were not performed by CineD. Sure, you might have one or two more stops in outright DR, but if those extra stops are bright purple or leafy green then they don't count as much as ones where the colours are neutral and the only issue is noise. This is especially relevant when shooting in high DR environments I think, as one of two things can happen: You're shooting with proper exposures and the right ratios, in which the extra stops of DR will only be included deep into the highlight and shadow shoulder/knee rolloffs, so are providing a relatively minor improvement to the image You're not shooting with the right exposure and ratios and you need the extra DR in order to bring up relevant details from the shadows or pulling down the highlights to bring out relevant details from there - which in either case is heavily dependent on how good those areas look When you start evaluating cameras on that basis, the rankings get shuffled significantly with some "high DR" cameras taking a pretty awful fall from grace, whereas others with more modest DR numbers climb up that ranking because all those stops are neutral and very usable.

  10. One poster- you must be talking about me. @markr041 I meant "thin and not overly attractive". Typo in the last word. 😂 With thin colour I mean a look like a crayon sketch on paper, as opposed to thick as oil paint on a canvas, rich, subtle, involving, like in a Rembrandt painting. But that is just due to the neutral palette left as is after the CST, or Lut, if that is preferred. I have seen some awesome colour coming from the 12 bit NRaw on youtube. It´s just a matter of colour grading and what one is aiming for with powerhouse cameras such as a modern Panasonycanikon. Would love to test an Z8 or Z9s NRaw. 12+ stops of dynamic range are plenty to work with for me. Would love to hear from deezid about his findings with the Lumix S5 II and Braw. @deezid

  11. All manufacturers LUTs are pretty bad but Nikon is on a different level of bad. I'm using Cinema Tools for both Nikon and Sony and quite happy with them.

    Vintage Zoom Lenses with IBIS

And just like, the vintage game is back on. It was indeed a firmware issue with the Fotodiox EF-L Mount adapter requiring an update and dummy here not realizing there was a difference between the 2 types of cable 🤪 Still need to see if I can get around that start up Q re. focal length, but sure I did with the S1H last year, and not a deal-breaker otherwise this combo is going to get a full run out on a 3 day job at the end of this week. It should work…or I would not be trying it, but final decision reserved whether this is going to be the final set up for the rest of this year after the weekend.

  14. The most recent official LUT is plain awful. Someone on a Z9 facebook group posted one which is much better, smoother and with more dynamic range. In general terms the camera has average dynamic range, it's OK and gets the job done, shadow recovery is pretty good. The camera ergos, screen and evf are really nice though, I like shooting with it and the Nikon Z 24-70 f2.8 is a really nice lens.

  15. The Z8 as an APS-C video camera. You can shoot RAW in DX mode, which crops the sensor and gives you 5405x3040 clips, better than 5K and much better than 4K. You can shoot RAW at the highest quality (HIGH), with the bitrates 1/4th those for 8K - so you can shoot 48 minutes at HIGH RAW on a 1TB card, as opposed to 12 minutes for 8K! You can of course us DX (APS-C) lenses in those mode. For this video I used the FF Nikon Z 24-70 f4 lens. An advantage of the crop is that mostly one is using the center of the lens, so corner drop-off is irrelevant - most lenses from Nikon are really good in the center. So, how does it look: Think meerkats - habitat and inhabitants in their activities. 5K (5120x2880) frame grabs:
