  1. This is going to be my new and much smaller wireless mic/external recording solution, love it. Rode fixed everything I didn't like about the previous two and made lots of improvements. I really like everything this has to offer, my Sennheiser G2 and G3 lav and handheld systems are finally getting replaced as I'm trying to trim my kit size/weight down and just simplify my workflow. My external recorder is history too. This more than covers all my wireless mic and portable recording needs in one crazy small package. No need to mess with batteries and SD cards, you can skip the app - plug the charging case into a computer and just drag all the files to your computer, they function as standalone recorders if you're just getting audio, you can use them for streaming or zoom calls, real 32-bit float, auto safety track and so on. As for them being shiny, some 1000 grit sandpaper will take the shine off in a few seconds, but I'll use them with lav's or one of the small Rode shotgun mics, so its not an issue for me. 2. 2 deal-breakers for me, as expected. Rear LCD. Nah. Single card slot. Nah. Does make the A7RV an even more interesting option and looking ever more tempting for mainly stills, occasional B/C roll video. Compact, relatively lightweight, has the lens options I actually want, can crop considerably so do away with any/all chunky zooms such as 70-200 etc. Whether I’d go all in with Sony is another matter but the dark side has some allure with the pairing of FX3 and FX30 for video work… Patience Grasshopper. When L Mount reveal their hand, I will make my decision…but that in itself is time limited because the next ‘whatever’ needs to be in my hands end of March 2024 no delays or hiccups…

  3. Nonsense. Sony isn't clamping down on anything. E-mount protocols are open source - its precisely the reason every 3rd party AF lens maker has E-mount lenses and why there's nothing for the RF and only recently some for X-mount and such. The poor functioning lens likely needs a FW update, much the same way Sony bodies get an incremental update when certain lenses are released or lenses get FW updates when new bodies come out. Newer bodies like the a6700 with the AI functionality will certainly require some lens updates. Everyone outside of Sony is not openly sharing AF protocols so they have to be reverse engineered. Nikon seems to have something with Tamron and Fuji has allowed Sigma and Viltrox in, but as we know outside of Sony options are severely limited. Chris

  4. Now released: A7C ii - https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-a7c-ii-initial-review-not-so-small-improvements A7CR - https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-a7cr-initial-review-high-resolution-in-a-small-package Sony certainly seems keen on filling every niche they can with a camera...

  5. I really wish they'd make these less tacky/cheap looking and relax on the branding, especially on something labeled "pro." It'd be nice if they were inconspicuous.

  6. It worked out okay, but I think I would have done a better job with the Blackmagic cameras I have been using for years. The Sony did do well in low light, although I was mainly at around ISO 3200 in the darker areas, occasionally up to ISO 10,000. The lighting was very challenging; I used the Cine Meter II app on my phone to measure reflected colour temperature and dialed it in manually on the Sony to get me close. We'll see how the video turns out after I edit and do some minor color grading; i'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised. I shot it all at 4K except for the slow-motion clips, which can only be shot in 1080p, and I think I'll just do a 1080p timeline and put the 4K clips into it so I can zoom in and pan them if necessary.
