Sony Burano : a groundbreaking cinema camera
solovetski and 2 others reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
The a1 has by and large flown under the radar so its diminishing price on the used market does make it an interesting proposition a bit down the road to do a poor man's 10% of the price / 90% of the image version of the Burano with one. Need a name though. Base it on the Venice* obviously, so it has to be something with lots of canals. But a bit more rough and ready to reflect the price. And a bit more northern for the dourness and attitude. Right, the Birmingham it is then. * Fun fact is that Birmingham is one of the gazillion places referred to as the Venice of the North but in actual fact it should be that Venice is called the Birmingham of the South as Birmingham actually has more miles of canals. All built by order of The Peaky Fucking Blinders presumably.3 points -
The reworked Micro Studio Camera then... looks with the new additions that they've accidentally created the box P4K that everyone has been asking for. A nod to Panasonic there that its possible to bring out a new MFT camera that isn't the size of a brick. However...... Unless I missed it, does that new 6K not have the ND filters ? It wasn't mentioned and looking at the rear panel the +/- buttons to control it that the P6K Pro has were not there. The AF looks like the familiar standard too though and I'm guessing much would have been made if it had something new in that department * Full frame, L mount and CDAF..... Its pretty much a BRAW shooting version of the original S5 without the IBIS then 😉 Looks pretty good but not the complete revolution many were predicting/expecting/hoping for. *yes, yes real cinema cameras have no AF anyway etc but don't say that you wouldn't love it if it had it..2 points

My wild speculation is that it will be a groundbreaking stereo 360VR camera using 16K braw files, with built in 3rd order ambisonics audio (in 32bit of course) Come on man, be realistic! That's totally unreasonably wild speculations, that BMD would never do. You should stick with more serious speculations that are actually possible in this world we live in, such as the perfectly possible camera I just suggested BMD might release.2 points

I think that is about the sum of it Kye. If you can keep your authenticity and not sell out to the mass market or simply for the sake of conforming, I think a few can keep their ball rolling. I like to think in my own industry, it's how I am still standing and with most of my integrity still intact. Because I didn't follow every fad or chase recognition by my peers, but rather by mostly ever doing what I wanted to do. I've always said...and stand by it now and will stand by it until the day I choose to quit and that is my client first and foremost is me. I shoot for myself and if others wish to pay me to do that, then we have a deal. I guess if you are being bankrolled by big studios, very few have the luxury of saying "fcuk you" and take the dollars when offered. I'm also quite reclusive; part black sheep, part lone wolf 😉2 points

I'm not sure who's more excited about this really. You for receiving your new camera or the rest of this forum that a new member started a thread asking for camera buying advice and then didn't disappear never to be heard from again. Well done on both fronts !2 points

Sony Burano : a groundbreaking cinema camera
solovetski and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
As you can see here with this Sony rep and his Zeiss CZ.2 lens, shaving those precious millimetres off the camera has revolutionised the way he shoots. And that is before you even get to the main raison d'être of a 1.4kg weight saving vs VENICE 2. That 1.4kg is crucial and a game changer when you have 35kg of tripod head, rails, cages, matte box, monitors, EVF and lens attached. He must really feel the difference in his back all day long. Here is one of our most adventurous and creative shooters, Nino. As you can see the size of the BURRITO is once again a total game changer here as it allows the lovely new Cooke to move back a few cm making it necessary to break your wrist to reach it. The added advantage here is that your hand forms a lens hood, reducing that nasty flare from the single coating! And as we can see, the ENG style rig high up on the body definitely isn't unbalanced with a high centre of gravity from all the shit mounted on the top handle! Finally we have the more minimal rig here. The 2.8kg BURRITO clearly needs the 68 rods under it and a tripod head the size of a bus. Otherwise the whole thing would collapse, giving an unprofessional aura to the shoot. I think that is an absolute brick of a battery on the back which is all part of the absolute game changing form factor as a cinema camera. Have you EVER seen a rig like this before!? REVOLUTIONARY!!! Yours for only $25,000! *Or just get a Sony a1 with same sensor from cash converters2 points -

Richard Wong tested better lowlight capabilities than R7 and XH2. No big treat? Like anything else on this camera? I think it is, just like the ne Ibis, AF, Dual Gain and heck what not, possibly even a creamier image for video. Richard Wong did a 2hour+ review! I like the body of the G9II. The S5, S5II bodies are the best looking FF cameras to my eye. Now, you have been, are and will keep being entitled to your opinions and underlining them from different angles. I understand what you mean but I prefer Richard Wongs input compared to the repeated statements regarding body too big, etc. I think it's perfect size. I see it as a cinema and cinema verité camera par exellence. Whereas the Sony A6xxx series is not a pretty sight to look at and the A7C has just the same kinda body. Scandalous, isn't it! I am astonished about the G9 II, this new video beast. The unconvinced ones among us, they can repeat their complaints again just like been done before. It will leave me shaking my head due to that lack of appreciation. This thread surely needs some more overheated love for Sony brick cams. Some fresh Sahara winds from freshly fried brick cam sensors. Some ever searching future Sony camera buyers with the same psalms and unwillingnes of purchase need to chim in more! Big time! Feels good to adapt to the overly cheek in tongue tone of this thread. We all sound like the mighty 30 to 60 year old dudes ruling this world, universe, cultures and greatest of manners, with an appetite and naughtiest of greatest plaisir of judgement. Seen that, done that, been there and all that tasty confidence. Gee, I need a break from some of the lesser intriguing "insights". I'll give you a longer one. I read the word wankers in one thread. Gimme a break. Missing @mercer and many more of the friends of the past. I am sure you do too. The tone in this forum has been lacking for quiete a while now. I'll give myself a break in the sight of overconfidential antics of the latest weeks on Eoshd. I think it's a great last word of this post. I appreciate this new camera and our lovely and dear Eoshd.1 point

What excites me is them moving to the L-mount and also what their future plans could be. I could definitely see myself picking up a Blackmagic camera for my non-event work now that it's using the L-mount. Their price of entry is low enough as it is that I could easily justify it since I'd be able to use all my lenses I've gotten since switching completely to the L-mount.1 point -
It is and it isn't really as It was going to the point of what is possible without having to put it in the size of body that the G9ii is in. A7cii is under 50% of overall additional volume of the camera body and a 19% increase in weight for an additional 290% in the sensor surface area with its associated IBIS mechanism and processing. Versus the 220% of overall additional volume of the camera body and a 54% increase in weight for an additional 0% in the sensor surface area that they Panasonic have given us with the G9ii 🙂 In terms of the discretion aspect, I'd always maintain that it is the width and particularly the height of the camera body that attracts the attention rather than the depth so the much of a muchness in the height and width means the A7cii will fly under the same radar as the GX80. Well, yeah, its all equal in the discretion in museums department for the A7cii until it bursts into flames and sets fire to the Bayeux Tapestry 🙂1 point

Agreed. Aside from just being ugly, it's just not a very practical design for a video centric camera. My guess though is that's how they save money on development and manufacturing costs.1 point -

The internals are all fantastic, but I don't understand why they've muddied the waters so much by using the Pocket 6K Pro body. The whole philosophy Grant talked about just screams for it to be a traditional video camera form factor. ...the app seems really cool though!1 point -

I'm wondering if they may trickle some of that 12K sensor tech into a cheaper body. Pocket 12K? Or maybe a full frame sensor? Just 4 hours until we find out.1 point -
Or maybe "Oh shit, who added the two extra zeroes to that order for the S5ii body shells ?"1 point

Unfortunately, I think that is what is going to happen and we won't see any more of the compact ranges. In this case my question was if they were going to go big what else could they have fitted in there. Specifically, ND filters. Unfortunately for Panasonic - and the rest of us - the 0.75mm difference in flange focal distance between MFT and L mount is in the wrong direction for them to offer an adapter, because that would justify the transition in at least providing an option for current MFT users to move up. As we know from the LS-300, the majority of MFT lenses cover APS-C (and those that don't can use a 10-12% additional crop) so they could have made a very attractive APS-C L mount camera with appeal to both sides of the fence.1 point

IMHO, if Blackmagic gets PDAF and IBIS (and, better ergonomics, better battery and ease of use) they will pose serious competition to everyone else. Also, true cinematography cameras will trickle down to a much larger crowd. Something that should have happened after the original pocket cinema camera. Which has superb image quality. But was s nuisance to use 🤣🤣🤣1 point

There doesn't necessarily have to be a size relationship with the additional power though - and certainly not the disproportional one that we are seeing with Panasonic's latter cameras. To add some real world perspective to both of your points, this is what is possible if the will is there and would mean you could have your cake and eat it too if they had a different policy.. The a7Cii on the right is full frame, 10 bit 4:2:2, IBIS, AI PDAF, Slog3, S-cinetone etc etc etc and is only marginally bigger than the GX80. That was a route they could've gone down but their idea on how to bring comparable features to a smaller sensor camera was this : So for you to have discretion while you are inside the museum and all the power boost in features for when you aren't whilst keeping the same lens mount, that is the setup you are forced to have to have in MFT now. Its faintly ridiculous when you look at the a7Cii in particular as you only need the one camera as you have all the power you need in either scenario and staff are unlikely to kick you out of the museum when they see you using such a discreet camera. Unless, of course, they think you are from the British Museum and are trying to steal the exhibits. I think AI will sort this problem in the very near future. BM have had the gyros in the camera from day 1 but never activated them until recently whilst they made the data operable so I'd expect to see rapid growth in that area. The lens data is obviously also recorded in the metadata of your video files. You never know, there might be something funky in that new camera they are supposed to be launching later today 🙂1 point

Go motorhome/camper shopping with my wife. The layout deliberations makes my pre-purchase machinations over cameras (where they are almost always superseded before I finish my deliberations) look like impulse purchases. I'm hoping that we reach a conclusion about which one to buy before I am too decrepit to actually drive the thing. I think it might be a bit more prosaic and related to the authorisation period where their first post won't appear until they've been approved which can take a couple of days. So they are likely just too impatient in this attention span of a goldfish with a markedly short attention span even for a goldfish era. As well as being wankers.1 point

Absolutely. Thanks for your kind response. You're right: those who harm others are typically adept at maintaining a public-persona that disguises the monster within. This is very freaky to witness at close-quarters. On a positive note: I am returning to the movie-industry, determined to challenge it through my film-making. This time I know the behavior-patterns of the 'vampires', and have even become a 'vampire hunter' of sorts. I have studied them carefully. To return to Nolan's work, I was pleased to read that he refuses to carry a 'smart'-phone, and writes his scripts on a computer that is not connected to the internet. Nolan also does not use social media (more specifically, we could say that social media does not use him.) I'm not sure how long Nolan has been doing this, but if it's a new policy, perhaps the Nolan of Memento and The Prestige will be slowly returning. It could take several years of concentrated work though. Definitely on the right track. The future looks bright.1 point

Yes I was too dramatic and I know you like to play devil's advocate 😉 but the substance of the argument does not change: what is the point of having an M43 sensor inside a full frame body? Certainly a huge saving in design and production costs (which unfortunately will not be passed on to the end customer). But what many are saying is that the route taken so far takes away a lot of the appeal of the M43 system.1 point

I continue to participate in those discussions because I figure that there are enough people lurking who have the same question that it's worth answering it anyway. In terms of them being wankers, I think one thing that we often forget is how completely overwhelming video can be. I came to video from stills, and I'm a technical person who reads a lot, but even I completely underestimated the sheer number of topics involved and the depth of each topic. Also, cameras are so compromised when it comes to video that simple questions like "what camera should I buy" involve considering literally dozens of trade-offs per camera, and that's before you talk about the wider ecosystem like lenses and accessories etc. I can't think of any other product that is as complicated to buy as a video camera, where the tiny details make so much of an impact on real-world use. I think a lot of those people asked a simple question and are simply overwhelmed by the replies they get.1 point

I'm sorry to hear about what you experienced. I take a pretty pessimistic view (I think of it as realistic, but others might not) that power corrupts, and because those in power are able to avoid consequences, are prone to behaving the way they want to. Some estimates are that 4% of people are sociopaths and 1% are psychopaths, which puts a lot of people in the situation that if they gain power they will use it to take advantage of others, and to maintain that power they have. Priority #1 of people who do things that society rejects is to hide that from the world, and priority #1 of powerful people is to keep that power. We are animals after all, and further to that, we are the descendants of those that "won" at the reproducing game, which doesn't only incentivise being nice and considerate. In terms of if fame kills creativity, I think that it would if you lose touch with the parts of the human experience we all share. It's well known that rich / powerful people still suffer from mental illness and commit suicide so those things don't separate you from the human experience, but if you get caught up in ego and trying to act like you're better than everyone else or that your life is somehow better then your work will no longer include the things that we all share.. it takes courage to reach into yourself and connect with the uncomfortable feelings that we would prefer weren't there. I think it also includes staying connected to why you do something in the first place. I see lots of good YT people get into YT to be creative and then get caught up in the algorithm or in product reviews and the commercial aspects of it, and because they're not motivated by those things they get burnt out. I used to think that in life you got energy from sleeping and then doing things during the day would make you tired. Now I realise that this is true physically, but mental energy comes from doing what you are inspired to do, so if you're mentally tired it's because you're not doing things in accordance with your own values and preferences. Of course, if you're a creative person running their own business then practical considerations mean that you might have to talk to clients, do the finances, etc, but if you're inspired by the business enough creatively then that motivation should power you through those "required" tasks. As soon as those things are seriously getting you down, it's because you're not getting mentally inspired elsewhere enough to carry you through those things.1 point

One of your pet peeves also? I have a new rule in that if they don't pop back into the conversation several times, I don't join the thread and expound my great opinion until such time as they do. Wankers, the lot of them. Good for you. Always fancied a bit of FX3 action myself but as a fully paid up member (at this time) of the L Mount Alliance and no hands on or rental opportunities where I live, only been able to live my FX3 fantasies vicariously. I could of course have bought one off Amazon, played with it and sent it back for full refund. But I'm not a complete twat. I did do that with an XH2 and before that, an OM-1, but in both cases I genuinely intended to keep each unit at that time. But anyway, enjoy your FX3.1 point

I have an iPhone 13 pro max and I some time use video that I intercut with my R5c and R5, is better than gopro and co imo but I really hate the shooting experience due to the internal storage and slow transfer speed and hard to manage file system..... also it does not keep the focal length selected e.g. 3x. I used iFilmic in the past, imo also not relly great, but now with the new subscription is a robbery. The new on is intriguing if you can really shoot to an external SSD or maybe even a CFexpress or SD reader... this would be good. I also hope that with the USB-C transferring video to a pc will be much faster and reliable. When I shoot athletes with long lenses I mount the iPhone on top of the flash shoe so I have a "safety always in focus version" and a more wide shot too, but the 77mm is still too short, I feel that 120mm is a good focal length for this. So in one pass I get 400mm/500mm and 120mm.1 point

Absolutely agree with this. The question, then, is: Do these directors become emotionally-disconnected from themselves because commercial-success is inherently disconnecting? Or, is something more specific happening in Hollywood? I ask this question from personal experience at the highest-levels of Hollywood. As a former-producer, I was assaulted by a person that most would recognize. The objective of this assault was to stop me making a film that threatened establishment interests; and to displace me from the industry as a whole. Without going into details, I have spoken with others who are also aware that a (it's hard to find a more appropriate word for it) vampire-class roam Hollywood and will target some filmmakers. Those they cannot control, they try to destroy. Fortunately, some they cannot reach. Personally, I was led into the situation where I was attacked by a 'friend'. I was definitely not the only person they did this to. This is why I'm very curious about Hollywood directors who quickly went from high-art to barely-competent. Naturally, I cannot know if these directors simply got, suddenly and extraordinarily, very bad at an art-form they were previously excellent at. Perhaps that is it. My experience suggests that there is another way that this descent occurs: Artists who challenge and confront society through their filmmaking are targeted for harassment / traumatization. It's only now, years later, that I am returning to film-making. This time as an 'emerging'-cinematographer, and entirely outside the Hollywood system.1 point

Thanks for everyone's advice. I bought the FX3 in the end and so far so good. Now spending a small fortune on SD cards, spare batteries, Metabones adapter and new SSDs for my Atomos Ninja so I can work in ProRes Raw. I've been looking into file formats for recording on the FX3 and considering XAVC S-I 4K or XAVC S-I DCI 4K but it seems that DCI is locked to 24P. Am I right? I will probably work mainly in 25P or 50P with some 120P shooting. Thank you.1 point
