4K 120fps on 1" sensor size going with such inconspicuous form factor is incredibly sweet... I am in love again! :- *2 points

I've seen quite a few videos from the BMCC6K now, and they all seem to shoot and edit in 3:2, which I find quite strange.... CAN doesn't mean SHOULD! This one is an 8K YT upload:2 points

Remarks on Israeli / Gaza war
Thpriest and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Last weekend was shocking. Absolute pure evil and terror. A brutal loss of life in Israel. It is understandable they are out for revenge, but it should be Hamas and terrorist groups that get wiped off the face of the earth. Not women and kids. A lot of binary views out there, with people taking sides, that's the nature of war I suppose. This isn't my war. And it isn't even many of theirs. There are so many civilians in that part of the world who want nothing to do with Hamas and just want to live peacefully in their home without the threat of Israeli bombs falling and occupation. Surely we can all agree on this - that women and children should be spared. The Israeli government doesn't seem to want to do that. Many of the young Israeli victims at the music festival who were slaughtered in the prime of their lives also sympathised with the NORMAL people in Gaza who are NOT terrorists. Most people are not in nodding-dog mode USA-government style total adoration of the Israeli government and their politics. I also think it is darkly ironic that so many on the extreme socialist left of Western politics and even many in the LGBTQ community seem to want to think of Hamas as heroic freedom fighters. Actually if these people ever came face to face in reality with Hamas they would be the FIRST in line to get beheaded. I despise the actions of both Hamas and the Israeli government. Palestinian civilians as mere collateral, the occupation of their land, it is all so wrong. Before wiping out terorism in Gaza there should have been a MASSIVE humanitarian effort to evacuate the civilian women & children population by sea. By going ahead with a ground-invasion possibly as early as this weekend, is the Israeli government comfortable to be seen in the eyes of the world to be committing genocide? Does it want the death of nearly 2 million innocent people on their hands and to lose the support of the world's public? Yes they are entitled to destroy Hamas and defend themselves so that what happened last weekend will not be repeated. No, they cannot be allowed to take senseless revenge on Palestinians by bombing kids in their beds, it is the stuff of war crimes. Hopefully people in a binary view, blindly supporting ONE SIDE against the other will be able to come to terms with the fact that no binary argument is ever valid in war. As for the West, we seem to be standing by without any plan whatsoever to get the civilian population out of Gaza to safety. We are sending the navy, warships, no rescue boats, no proper safe corridor into another country, nothing. Of course it would be a big logistical effort, with massive number of security checks, but even a few large ships could save thousands of lives, even if you just take children or those under the age of 18 and their mothers, sisters, brothers. Leave the Hamas hardcore fanatics to fight, and get the kids out of there...2 points -
Just wanted to conclude this thread. Thanks for those who championed the XS20 over the XT4. I think I will enjoy using it for the next few years to come. After about a day or two of minimal time to play and review some clips as well as setup, here are my initial thoughts. Cons first. It has taken a bit of getting used to the lack of extra buttons and dials (more on that later). SD card is back to the prosumer style over the XT3 of being buried in the battery slot. Viewfinder while quality seems usable to me, I find the actual viewfinder a bit small but also no nice eye cup and I think using a 3rd party eye cup would also cut out functionality of the few extra function buttons that for some reason is right near the EVF. I would prefer more navigational buttons over using combo of touch screen/single joystick, plus the actual menu/back buttons are physically small for someone with large hands. I need more testing but finally, I don’t like that when using my Fuji 2.8-4 kit lens, IBIS is automatically enabled when using OIS lenses. Now I’m going to assume based on what I’ve read it’s using a combination and perhaps need to test turning off OIS and using ibis, but I wish you could turn this off and JUST use OIS. The camera doesn’t come with a traditional battery charger but rather a usb c cable and wall adapter. Since my camera came with a free second OEM Fuji battery, I’ve opted to purchase the Fuji two battery charger as well. Finally, apparently shooting H265 10 bit 4:2:2, I can’t figure out a way to make those files play in QuickTime on my MacBook Pro running Catalina. I’ve been using macs for the last 10+ years so I’m used to plugging in my SD card and space bar playing through the files. Was a small bummer I had to open resolve to play the files but maybe there is something I can do to fix? Initial Pros: Some of this will contradict above, however I do love the smaller body size! The added grip fits like a glove, and I think allows more stabilization; even though I think the XT line looks better. While I miss the physical shutter speed/ISO and other functions, I’m finding so far I don’t really need them. Camera has built in ISO button and a Q button where I’ve expanded the full menu to just hit this Q button when I need to change almost anything involved in filming from frame rates, to Resolution to picture profiles to IBIS etc. Additionally, the touch screen has many useful areas from selecting items to even touch functions for turning off/on customizable things. This helps take away the above con about lack of physical buttons I feel. So far in the way I use IBIS which is not vloggy whipnpan, or running following an actor, but rather just handheld slow static shots - it seems to work great. More testing is needed, but for tripod like shots, or slow movements like I prefer to use, looks good to me. Overall I think this was a worthy upgrade from my XT3 and I’m glad I sold it and bought this to get additional shooting options, possibility of FLOG2, and while certainly not the best, at least ability to use IBIS.1 point

I guess that Sony sponsored the Creator movie, and requested to use Sony cameras. DP decided to use FX3 to have fun. And it is the best marketing strategy for FX line cameras.1 point

Great video and looks like a good channel to follow in future - people doing controlled and straight-forward tests are rare unfortunately! This result is what I was hoping for and good to see. When I did the image quality tests comparing different codecs and then doing the mathematical comparison with the original file it showed how much more efficient the newer codecs were over Prores, which is a now getting quite old. There are situations where I would still prefer Prores over a h26x codec, but those are getting less common as resolution increases (and the pixel-level compression artefacts get smaller). I wonder, can it shoot lower resolution Prores internally.. for example, Prores 4444 1080p? Imagine if we could independently choose the options like in BM cameras: profile (SDR, LOG), codec (H265, Prores LT/422/HQ/4444/4444XQ), Resolution (2K, 3K, 4K), Framerate (23.976, 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60, 120, 180, 240), and destination (internal, SSD). That would be a dream! I'd set it to LOG / Prores 4444 / 3K / 48p / Internal and just leave it there. Yes, for ease-of-use it's definitely becoming a powerful option. I've used my smartphone as a second camera for a while, and on my recent trips my smartphone replaced my action camera as the second camera with super-wide angle.1 point

Finally! Lets hope you can turn sharpening and noise reduction all they way off! I also wounder what 1 inch sensor are they using? Is it imx989? 4k120 in such a small body over 1inch sensor would be a challenge.1 point -

Little update! Thank goodness for Notion! I was able to import all my "interview" questions and responses into a few columns and then organize the shots and B-roll around each "block". It made my ideas and thoughts so organized that I am so excited to start rolling! My partner leaves for vacation tonight, and she is my interviewer, and camera op for the shots at the observatory and coffee shop so I will hold off most filming until then.1 point -
iPhone 15 Camera Update - Released

I found a good test video of h265/LOG vs ProRes/LOG with the Blackmagic App.... for most cases you probably can get away with h265/LOG saving the clumsy SSD that defats a bit the concept of using a phone. Files are much smaller and you can do 4k 60p LOG internally.... good to have options https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpO06mdN7mk1 point -

iPhone 15 Camera Update - Released

The disappointing but absolutely not surprising part is, that this feature doesn't come to the older iPhone Pro (Max) models. It would probably be technically possible to implement the log profile via an update on e.g., iPhone 14 Pro as it already has a 48mp sensor with HDR, but that's not helping the sales cycle from Apple's perspective. I don't think it's impossible from the hardware side to skip some of the (over)processing of the image.1 point -
Same here and as someone who has had a lot of cameras over the years, that is a rare experience. No DSLR did it for me. My various Nikons were just bulky blobby tools other than perhaps the D700, but at the time I was transitioning to mirrorless Fuji. The first and most impactful camera that I really felt a connection with, I felt was ‘just right’ for me, was the original X100. I bought and sold 3 or 4 of those things, mostly because the reality was it couldn’t actually do what I needed it to do as a working tool. The original X Pro1’s were equally frustrating as enjoyable playing off speed (crap) with image output (if you didn’t miss anything too fast paced). The X Pro2’s had ‘it’, ‘it’ being not what I’d call soul, but character. The XH1 had it for me and so did the XT3 but both were flawed for my needs, the former not having the video spec I wanted and the latter lacking IBIS. Might any later and more recent Fuji have had ‘it’ for me? Maybe… Came close with either XH2 or XH2s and maybe the XT5 as with any of these we have the spec I need to do my job, but too late on my case as I’d taken a punt on switching to L Mount starting with the S5. And it’s been mixed… I’ve gained in outright video quality output and marginally also in stills, both of which enhanced due to year on year experience both at the capture stage and in the edit, but something has been missing and that has been outright enjoyment. The tools have equally aided me and at the same time, got in the way. I can’t really fault the output, as in got there in the end, but the process to do so has been somewhat strained. The original S5 was pretty much a step sideways from the XT3. Other than the lack of IBIS, I preferred the XT3. I never had an S1 so cannot comment but nothing about it inspired me to ever try one. The sensor in the S1R did inspire me. There was and is magic in that thing for both stills and video, but not quite the video spec I wanted at the time and I just could not get on with the ergos of the thing because… …because S1H. After the X100, the next in line for the crown of ‘character’. It’s impossible to point at any one single thing and say, “it’s because of that” 👉 because as is usually the case with these things, it’s the sum of it’s parts. It’s only flaw for me…though it is not really a flaw as such, is I wish it was 10% smaller and 20% lighter which is about what the Leica pairing of SL2/SL-S are, albeit without any kind of tilting screen or I would have gone there 100%. And the S5ii…? As already mentioned, a lot of hope, but less reality. A solid workhorse, but falling short in various areas, principally how it is to use in reality and the simple fact is, I just don’t enjoy it. It’s close, but no where near the cigar. So I am going to try something now that on paper is in most regards, pretty much equal. Slightly better in some specs, equal in most, behind in others, but will almost certainly have that X Factor that is missing from the S5ii. But I am not going to rush headlong into it burning all my Lumix bridges without confirming my beliefs, but do it in stages. Mostly because I am sick to death of chasing something that is now attainable from any of the brands re. specs, re. my needs, so it’s a case of ensuring I now make choices that will tick the box of enjoyment at the same time and ‘enjoyment’ for me is the spirit of that original X100. A small(ish), compact little box, most of the time with a single fixed focal length, albeit this time as fast as I need and with all the specs/ability I want. I’m going back to my future.1 point

The more I learn about colour grading and human vision, the more I understand why such a thing might exist. Human visual perception doesn't see in even remotely the same way that cameras and displays work. It is both infinitely more sophisticated than the current state of the art in tools we have now, and also very flawed and easily duped with optical illusions of almost infinite number. Cameras and monitors/projectors are also radically less capable than it (although HDR is partly closing that gap) and so almost all the images we view are enormously processed (the sun is 16,000,000 times brighter than white in rec709) and in colour grading we rely on various tricks to make things feel less artificial. Humans are wired to stay alive and the human visual system plays a large part in this, detecting movement in our periphery so we react to predators/prey, and even motion sickness (which compares our inner ear movement to what our eyes see) makes us feel ill when it thinks we have been poisoned and are hallucinating, etc etc. Our vision is for much more than just walking around - all these incredible distortions in video are all bound to have a feeling of some kind, some sort of aesthetic quanta that go with them. How could they be a completely pristine experience when we sit and watch a 2D pattern of dancing lights impersonate a 3D environment, where it jumps from place-to-place, it moves and the perspective changes when the whole time our body is continually aware we're sitting down and motionless, it takes us to places that are warm and cold and where the wind is blowing and our body tells us we're on a couch eating snacks, etc etc, there is infinitely more. We can do this because we evolved the ability to look at a scene through a window / gap / mouth of a cave, and understand that what we see out the window might be a different white-balance / brightness / etc than the environment we are currently in. If we hadn't evolved this ability then TV would just look like a glowing object in a room and would make no sense at all.1 point
