  1. Honestly I’m holding out a bit longer, until 2045. Surely there will be better options then.

    DJI Pocket 3?

I am still concerned by the audio (not relevant for this video, which is just for Happy Halloween), with the internal-mic audio sounding odd. For the internal mics, there is no control of gain. For any external mic, however, there is. And any usb-c mic will work even in stereo (I tried one), and with an external mic you see audio meter bars on the screen by which to check and set audio levels. It also seems that any usb-c to female 3.5" converter cable will also work so one can use wired standard mics with unbalanced connectors with the camera, unlike for the GoPro's. Finally, you can use two DJI wireless mic2's to record in stereo, if you can purchase a second DJI mic2. So, interviewer and interviewee mic'ed up wirelessly with 32bit float recorded on each "mic" as backup. So, the audio is actually a big focus for the camera, but I do not understand why the double standard, internal and external.

  5. As every camera, requires a shooter and director or editor or producer in charge to throw what doesn't fit directly to the basket :- )

I agree, but some are better at minimising the impact of it e.g. like the GX85/G95/GX850 you mentioned above. Moire in 1080p is more noticeable on the Oly E-M1 ii & iii than on those, despite having a higher-res sensor (and noticeably soft 1080p video).

  7. Addendum to the above. I think the shots that suffer the most are the ones with the non-main cameras. I know on my iPhone 12 Mini that the main camera has the noise performance of the GH5 in identical conditions with an F2.8 lens on it, but the wide camera on the iPhone has the same noise as the GH5 in the same conditions but at F8... that's 3 stops worse performance.

  8. This seems like a very useful video.. obviously shot in the real world, in 4K60 Apple LOG with an ND and the BM Camera App which offers the manual controls. Some shots are very clean and with nice colours, others seem a little off, some shots are noisy even though there should be lots of light, etc.. Lots of shots look like a smartphone, unsurprisingly. My take-away is that Apple LOG is great and the results look stunning, but it's very fragile and everything in the situation has to be favourable otherwise it starts looking bad quite quickly.

  9. Realistic assessment of iPhone 15 pro with Apple Log vs pro Camera in good lighting conditions. Good review and tips IMHO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SiqKfm-8kA Everybody is trying to push some LUTs but you don't need them There is an official Apple Log to REC 709 transform LUT and CST in latest Davinci Resolve that supports Apple Log and works very well

  10. It was graded like a feature film, that's why it's so dark. Here's a still from the video: Here's a still from one of the Bourne movies, shot on film: The iPhone one is a little darker in the highlights, but it's also overcast, whereas the Bourne image is in full sun on white buildings, so that makes sense. The iPhone one has a little less contrast too, which is partly appropriate due to the weather, but also likely to simply be that in modern times people seem to be afraid of contrast. People all over the internet are using the phrase "cinematic" willy-nilly but seem to have lost contact with reality in terms of what movies actually look like - most "cinematic" content looks more like video than a dad with a handcam. It seems to still have a video look - it's something about the motion that I can't put my finger on. I've been sensing this for almost a year now with various footage from a range of different cameras, but haven't worked out what it is. I might have to step things up and actively start chasing it.

I have a strange relationship with the GX85, now that I've gotten sufficiently good at colour grading - I don't feel limited by it. Of course, if they were to increase the DR, improve low-light performance, add 10-bit, etc etc, then I'd be happy, but I'm not chafing at the bit for those things. What I wouldn't mind though, is having a log profile. And not a "V-Log L" style unsupported thing, I mean a real log profile that's supported with professional specifications. Apple did it with a phone, so there's no excuses now. They might need to add 10-bit for that, but so be it. There is quite a bit of info about Panasonics future plans. For example, this says that Panasonic has registered two new cameras, likely on higher end and one lower end: https://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-officially-registered-another-new-model-in-china-we-now-have-two-cameras-coming-soon/ This article from France suggests that they're selling well there, that although the compact camera market was crushed by covid, their sales are increasing due to competitors leaving the market segment, and that expert users prefer compact cameras with interchangeable lenses instead of expert compacts: https://phototrend-fr.translate.goog/2023/10/interview-panasonic-salon-de-la-photo-2023/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp That's all hedging-our-bets marketing-speak of course, but it sounds to me like Panasonic might be keeping its eye on the compact market segment with the view to having a large share of a relatively small market. We all know that smartphones ate the point-and-shoot fixed lens market, but interchangeable lens cameras will always have a huge advantage over smartphones in this regard, so I think there will always be demand of some sort. The Resolve v18.1 manual is 4036 pages. They're up to 18.6 so I'd say that one is longer still.

It is. Around a decade or so back, I was what is known as skinny fat, ie, very little muscle tone but a surplus of fat around my middle. I never exercised, had developed asthma, smoked and drank (but not heavily) and it was a gradual erosion/accumulation more than anything. I decided to do something about it around the time of my 40th birthday. I’m 53 in a few weeks and never been in better condition and actually have a fitness competition (Hyrox) that I have traveled to Ireland for from France, in a couple of hours. Why mention this? Fatigue, or reduction of from being in shape. And not just the physical, but the mental which is unseen but contributes. But I still have trouble getting to sleep after an intense 15+ hour day because despite downing tools, I’m still buzzing. The next day though…and I can never lie in and catch up no matter how late I went to bed or how tired I am, by lunchtime, wiped out and can easily grab another 1-2 hours early afternoon, but it’s not until the day after the day after I feel recovered, so never take back to back jobs anymore. No way I could be working the way I have been for the last few years one to two decades ago and I guess another factor why when other photographers or videographers ask me how I do what I do, part of that answer is level of fitness. But as with all these things, it is only a part of a greater whole. 2.8kg unsupported in and out of your hands all day though is a bit nuts which is why it has to go!

I don't see your problem, just build strength by carrying around a brick all day when you're at home or running errands. It's a standard industry strength training practice. This photo shows a steadicam operator popping down to the shops on his day off:

Speaking of weight, one of the principle reasons I am shifting some of my kit, - my main unit clocks in at just over 2.8kg 🤪 My targets now are 2 units 1-1.5kg each. I don’t mind a bit of chunk and heft, but anything over 2.5kg…as just one of 3 units is a bit much on 12+ hour shoots!

If I had to choose just one lens to keep out of my collection, it would be the Pana 14-140mm F3.5-F5.6 - for the range it provides it's relatively small (75mm long) and light (265g), it supports dual-IS2, focus breathing isn't noticeable and on my copy at least the zoom ring is reasonably smooth. It's been my most-used lens ever since I got it as a bundle with a G6 years ago. If I could keep a few more, then... The Oly 12-40mm F2.8 - just a great all-round, reasonably bright, moderate wide to moderate telephoto, no noticeable focus breathing, 85mm long and 382g. (The Pana 12-35mm F2.8 is a bit smaller and lighter and gets you dual-IS - I was considering both a while ago and then a really good used deal on the Oly came up so I went for that). The Oly 75-300mm F4.8-F6.7 - what I use most often for wildlife, pretty small (117mm long) and light (423g) for the focal range, and decently sharp for something that small/light/cheap. Low light? usually just chuck the Pana 25mm F1.7 into the camera bag or pocket in case I need it - cheap/small/only 125g. I also own the old Pana 20mm F1.7, but that's noisy when focusing, so I might swap it for a 17mm or 15mm fast AF prime at some point (Oly or Pana Leica probably). I've recently acquired a used Pana 35-100mm F2.8 (to complement the Oly 12-40mm F2.8). Decent lens and not too large/heavy for a 'pro' lens, but it's got noticeable focus breathing so not ideal for video C-AF use. (and yes, the Pana 12-32mm pancake is great when you want to keep things as small as possible, especially if you're taking two cameras on a trip, so that would be a 'keeper' too).

I have the GH5 and GX85. The GH5 was my default body, and I used it with the Laowa 7.5mm F2, the Voigtlander 17.5mm F0.95 and the Voigtlander 42.5mm F0.95. Occasionally I'd use a longer lens for wildlife etc, like the FD 70-210mm F4, or the Tokina 400mm F5.6. I would carry the 12-35mm F2.8 for difficult situations where I need very fast zooming or extra IS. That was up until a recent trip when I discovered the GX85 with the 14mm F2.5 pancake lens combo. Not only did I fall in love with the size of the setup, and the lack of attention it raised, but I also discovered that the AF-S was extremely useful and the DoF was adequate. I've since come upon the idea that there are three setups that I think I will pursue: GX85 with 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 zoom lens Having a 10X zoom lens will be liberating because I'll be able to shoot whatever compositions I can see, the AF-S will allow me to work really quickly, and (after spending a lot of time with a DoF calculator) I realised that the DoF should be sufficient for the work I do. This is a day-time setup. Interestingly, this lens is the same size as the 12-35mm F2.8 lens, so not too bad in practice. GX85 with 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 pancake lens Compact walk-around setup when size really matters, and still gives a good zoom range. Similar use-case to the above. GX85 with 7.5mm F2, TTartisan 17mm F1.4, and TTartisan 50mm F1.2 lenses This is the low-light setup. All that is in combination with iPhone, and especially the wide camera, which acts as a second body and gives quick access to a super-wide angle. If I was going somewhere that camera size didn't really matter, like doing a tour with a busload of tourists, then I'd consider taking the GH5 instead, but I'm struggling to put my finger on why it would be that much better. I know it has various better specs, but in reality I'm only doing home video stuff, so the shooting experience and the reaction of people in-frame matters more than DR etc. My philosophy is to think hard about how I shoot and what I am trying to achieve and to challenge my assumptions. Hope this is useful 🙂

I don't think it works that way though. A 12K sensor would be sensitive to moire if there were repeating patterns that happened to align with the gaps between the pixels, just like a 4K sensor. It might be that common causes of moire are around a certain size and therefore impact one combination of sensor resolution / sensor size / and focal length more than other combinations. Also, lower resolution sensors might be more prone to moire as they're typically older and there were larger gaps between the pixels than there are now. Lower resolutions are likely to have issues on cheaper cameras too, due to the camera line skipping and therefore effectively creating very large gaps between the active pixels. Sadly, there's lots of different ways to create moire, and many of them tend to come from strategies to make the product more affordable!

  19. I found a good test video of h265/LOG vs ProRes/LOG with the Blackmagic App.... for most cases you probably can get away with h265/LOG saving the clumsy SSD that defats a bit the concept of using a phone. Files are much smaller and you can do 4k 60p LOG internally.... good to have options https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpO06mdN7mk

  20. The disappointing but absolutely not surprising part is, that this feature doesn't come to the older iPhone Pro (Max) models. It would probably be technically possible to implement the log profile via an update on e.g., iPhone 14 Pro as it already has a 48mp sensor with HDR, but that's not helping the sales cycle from Apple's perspective. I don't think it's impossible from the hardware side to skip some of the (over)processing of the image.

  21. 🙂 @Emanuel My personal gamechanger would still be as stated a GH5II-ish LX15 with a clutch mechanism for manual focus and full HDMI. 10bit S16 pocket cinecam heaven. The comment section under Gerald Undones test gives away quiet a few details about not so pleasant processing even in log, such as noise reduction and color clipping in the highlights. Apple fans will buy it anyway. Action mode, overall impressive image quality in log and tele lens are pretty cool, of course. I don´t dig the videos of people sneaking into awesome locations and filming girls for lookin pretty and doing endless and brainless gimble like pushins- and outs, selling luts and pushing their affiliate links as well. Commenting youtube fan herds scream their amazement. I don´t like that noise and buzz and hysteria. A GH4 with its 9 year old sensor would look just as good if it had internal 10bit or via mini hdmi out. That phone is an achievement of technological developement. The fancrowd seems to develop back into infantile states of hysteric consumerism. Slashcam results and test is looking very good. One of the coolest test sites. They are the only site which hinted me to the creamy high resolving image of the GH5II and its cinematic textures without oversharpening. Thanks for posting their findings and test of the iphone 15! @kye

  22. Finally, a proper test... Let's try this again @gt3rs 🙂 To be honest, the differences between the SDR (processed) and Apple Log modes is quite staggering.
