Mobile Phone As Camera Wisdom/Advice

FYI, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra does not enable 10-bit recording through 3rd party apps like the mcpro24fps. Not a big deal for me, but if you're in the market, be aware. Best bet is to just ask the developer directly if the hardware you wanna use is compatible with 10-bit.3 points -

Ummm... all of them?? (except maybe RED Ranger???) Although the more modern ones will do better. The RED ONE of course being the worst, I was on a shoot where they draped frozen bags over it. Like I said, RED is infamous for this. Hated by the sound department, as we'll go over and ask for them to turn their fans down, and they'll whine "no we can't, otherwise it will overheat". But in you case, you'll be using the more modern-ish DSCM2 body, and you don't need to care about the sound dept, you can just happily crank up that fan to go at max noise all day long. Yup, this is why I think there is a strong argument for a Blackmagic Design, or Panasonic Varicam LT (or even EVA1 / S5 / S1H / BS1H ) or Fujifilm X-H2S or old ARRI ALEXA rather than a Sony or RED1 point

Hey @SRV1981, im interested in your posts about 15pro, but won’t check every video. So if you can just point what interested in each video it’s nice for us to decide wether to watch it.. thanks!1 point -
You can push the S5mk2 to 6400-12800. I had m4/3 before and you just can’t do that. i agree that the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 is a great option even if i miss 24mm. That being said, I recently had to shoot with the 24-105 f4 for some hand held almost macro shots of a wedding ring being made. The duaL ibis is great and i was shooting at f4 6400 in 6k (downscaled to 4k) with no problem.1 point

Panasonic G9 mk2

Pretty sure the S5ii ‘beats’ the G9ii… Not got or tried that particular 4/3rds camera or that lens, but have the FF stuff and had the 20-60 which is great I think as a wide angle 20mm f3.5…which is pretty equivalent to the wide end of the 4/3rds 10-25. This conversation is spread over 3 threads now 😂 I will stand by my opinion that the S5ii is the better option for low light. In good light, not a lot in it. For stills, the FF. Easily. APSC such as Fuji, there’s not so much in it, but 4/3 vs FF, pretty clear cut to me based on extensive use case. I could fool 99% of my clients 99% of the time…at least, but I’d know the truth. Plus I’d have to work a lot harder in that ‘fooling’ and could I be bothered? Nah. There’s a place for 4/3rds, but it’s not low light theatre photography, not when full frame options exist. In my opinion.1 point -
I think there are a lot of reasons to stick with M43 and go with the G9II, namely the stabilization and the lightweight lenses. I don't totally regret switching to the S5 (not the S5II) but I really, really miss the lower profile and smaller lenses. If you are looking to switch, though, I agree with PannySVHS. I think that the Lumix S5II (or S5IIx) is a great option particularly because of the stability. You would have great low light and versatility, with the best stabilization, along with really good auto focus.1 point

It's super nice and highly educating to read about all the different alterations of Red bodies and sensors. To read about Geoff Boyle is a very beautiful thing @IronFilm He was one major inspirations to me with his hands on attitude and to the point avdices he shared on his forum and in various interviews and videotaped:) workshops. I remember his evaluation of the Varicam. I remember him very dearly as one of the most impactful and supportive public figures of the arts and craft of cinematography. The original post of this thread has been narrowed down by og poster to be privately filming landscapes with 60min of footage per trip. A S1H will be perfect for that or a used S5. But you can of course buy a Red package for the amount of money you wanna spent and share your findings with us and maybe some of your filmed and edited material. Looking forward to it. Or get an Amira, if your hobby is worth to you a dime or two. @Jedi Master1 point

Great and the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 is a compact high performing zoom and this pairing is my go to for ALL run & gun, indoor, outdoor, after dark… I have had several 4/3 cameras and lenses including the EM5ii and the most recent OM-1 and whilst they may have marginally better stabilisation, performance-wise, beyond that, no contest, the full-frame S5ii is just better everywhere, stills and video. Even with the f1.7 lenses. Nah, weight and IBIS aside, the S5ii kicks any and all 4/3 backsides. GH6 and G9ii users may disagree. Get in a ring with the S5ii though and we would see who the real champ is 😉 My other choice would be the S1H which are now available at very decent prices on the used market, below new S5ii’s I think and you essentially trade a more compact, lighter, better AF frame for a better built (tank) unit with far better rear LCD, beautifully damped shutter and sound (for stills and important in theatres I reckon without resorting to electronic?) and a more ‘filmic’ image. Funnily enough, I have and use both… Gone over to Nikon for stills but can’t give up my Lumix for video…1 point

Sony A9III with Global Shutter
Jerome Chiu reacted to androidlad for a topic
Some of the features not mentioned during the press release but appeared in Chinese marketing material: Multi-frame RAW noise-reduction (Combining up to 32 RAW burst stills for one noise-free RAW still) Custom LUT import for video Lens breathing compensation in video mode It's expected to ship in China around end of January 2024. Early testers commented on the dynamic range to have taken a "slight but noticeable" hit due to global shutter design, hence the limited native ISO range of 250 to 25600.1 point -

The quality of posts in this thread is not necessarily equivalent to the quatity. Dropping youtube videos without any lovely written expression of soul, heart or mind is kinda wordless and to me worthless for a forum. But maybe that is just because of the shiny new product. Older tech ist dicussed with much more love and passion.1 point -

Cheaper alternative to 12S Ultra is the Xiaomi Mi 10 which can be had for about 200-300 euros used. This produces 6K RAW reliably at 24fps in Cinema DNG from a 1/1.33" sensor, same size as a top-end Galaxy and much larger than the older phones with their tiny 1/2.5" chips. Oneplus 8 Pro is the MotionCam's developers favoured device. It's reliable, fast, great sensor, good selection of lenses and does 4K/60p in RAW. McPro24fps is very handy for 10bit when you don't want the massive file sizes of RAW. By the way MotionCam can transcode to ProRes on Android phones in-app, or you can do it in post with their free app too. It's the Magic Lantern of phones basically.1 point
