I'm not into conspiracy theories anymore really (for which I blame the chemtrails and 5G masts activating the molecular mind control devices implanted in my brain by Bill Gates through the COVID vaccine) but if I were then I'd consider whether there was any external influence to this. The Hong Kong of today is very much not the same carefree Hong Kong that is depicted in those videos so, whilst to its viewers these videos act as a time capsule of more innocent times of photography gear "reviews", there will be others viewing it as a time capsule of a far more liberal time that they would rather suppress. Of course, the videos are also a body of work for one of the presenters who fled Hong Kong for political reasons as he discusses here. The broader issue highlighted by these videos being removed from YouTube, in common with content on other streaming services, is that if you value a piece of work then get a physical copy of it. With that, I'm off to download and burn a DVD compilation of Max Yuryev's weightlifting style auto focus tests.4 points -
Prores 444 and 4444xq are really nice codecs to work with. The issue is compressed RAW is often actually smaller in terms of file size compared to Prores 444. I shoot 2k Prores 444 which is about 500mbps, which is a reasonable size. To me 12 bit is important but it doesn't matter if it in the RAW format, Prores 444 or semiraw like BRAW. For me I notice the difference in shadows and skintones compared with 10 bit recording. The differences can be subtle though. This video demonstrates some differences you can see in a real world scenario. FX6 10 bit vs REDRAW3 points

Cined lab test of the iPhone 15 is out... https://www.cined.com/iphone-15-pro-lab-test-rolling-shutter-dynamic-range-and-exposure-latitude/ Highlights: Rolling shutter is very low (4.7-5ms for rear cameras and 9.3ms for front-facing camera) DR varies across ISOs due to heavy NR and processing (testing was done in 4K Prores HQ Apple Log) and they had to adapt their testing methodology for a range of reasons DR measurements are in the 11-14stops range, depending on how you measure them, and some assume no NR but this has tonnes of it, so.... In terms of exposure latitude it has 5-6 stops of latitude, depending on ISO. In general the latitude relates to the DR, so by comparing with cameras that have 12 stops of DR and 8 stops of latitude, that would mean the iPhone has 9-10 stops of DR In the end, it's a smartphone with a tiny little sensor The article is a good read and there's lots of nuance there.2 points

I ‘traded’ (off-loaded to the wife) my M1 14” at the beginning of this year for an M2 Max with 64GB ram 16” because the old one was barely faster than my 7 year old gaming desktop PC. A good test was batch editing a typical wedding of say 700 raw files through DXO PureRaw tidying up noise and detail. Overnight on my PC, around 8-10 hours? Same thing failed every time I tried it on the M1 chip MacBook. With this year’s M2, 40 minutes maybe? It has transformed my workflow and as someone who spends a lot of time working away from home Apr-Sep, it’s been brilliant. I use it with 3 external SSD. One for photo, one for video, one (armoured) backup for both. My only wishes were it was slightly less laggy for video editing because yup, there is some (but that may be me not having it set up right?) and I wish the screen was bigger than 16”, but as an all in one, photo and editing machine, at home at the dining room table, or in the office or in the motorhome, it’s a great/essential tool for sure.2 points

Interesting video. First things first - could that guy be any cooler? I'm pretty sure there isn't a single element in that video that isn't an automatic 10/10 for hipster chic. Wow. Talk about those people whose whole life is their own art project! Secondly, his commentary is all over the place. I see the differences he's talking about in the footage, plus a great many more that he probably sees but didn't mention - there are hue shifts and gamma shifts and subtractive colour operations and all sorts of wonderful things that are different between the two cameras. However, he points to differences and says "see the difference with 10-bit?" whereas I think the differences are likely to be a mix of: FX6 sensor read-out bit-depth FX6 image processing Sony RAW-LOG profile conversion (gamma, gamut, and bit-depth) FX6 compression I built a DCTL plugin for Resolve that reduces the bit-depth of the image, and to my surprise, you can reduce the bit-depth of rec 709 footage to 6-bits (and some shots to 5bit!) before there are visible changes. I'm not saying that there aren't any differences between 16-bit and 10-bit, because there are (however subtle they might be) but the things he was pointing at were definitely NOT all bit-depth related, and I'd suggest that most of them were processing/compression related actually. If you want to understand what the differences are with one parameter, you can't change dozens of them at once and then just declare that all differences are due to the one variable you want to talk about. You could take his whole video and just replace the phrase "10-bit" with "compression" and it would make just as much sense, despite having exactly the same examples. So yeah, it's a great video to show an FX6 LOG vs Komodo X RAW comparison, but it isn't an isolated 10-bit vs 16-bit comparison.2 points

I can't speak for Z9 raw as I have never used it, but I have been shooting raw video exclusively for the past 6 years... 1080p ML Raw with a 5D Mark iii and more recently 4K cDNG with a Sigma FP... ...and I can honestly say that I will never shoot with a heavily compressed codec again... ProRes is still good, I just can't afford a camera that hasn't effed it up. ...that said, raw isn't for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of storage space, both in camera and in post, but the difference in IQ is instantly apparent. With my 5D3, you can see it on the LCD and smile, but when you get the footage into the computer... it's kinda mind blowing. And with that said, I still prefer the look of film over digital, so your mileage may vary.2 points

MacBook Pro - M2 or M3
eatstoomuchjam and one other reacted to mercer for a topic
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'm heavily invested in Mac... iPhone, FCPX, Logic, even GarageBand, various writing programs... so moving to PC is not even a conceivable notion for me. As far as needs, I probably should have mentioned that I've been using an early 2014 MacBook Air with Intel, 8gb Ram and 256gb storage (I have a few external drives) for my writing, audio dramas and for transcoding 1080p ML raw and 4K FP cDNG to ProRes HQ or 4444 for light color grading and editing in FCPX. It's always been a bit of a hassle since the MacBook Air doesn't have a 180 degree viewing angle... so there's a lot of trial and error to figure out what looks right... but I had what I had, so I made it work the best I could. That said, after 9 years, it's showing its age and I am in need of an upgrade. Filmmaking has taken a bit of a backseat over the past couple of years, but I'm still plugging away. I assume 16gb of ram and an M2 would be a luxury to what I'm used to. Thanks again for your replies!2 points -

New Insta360 action camera on 21st Nov
eatstoomuchjam and one other reacted to gt3rs for a topic
Official NDs filters https://store.insta360.com/product/ace-pro-nd-filter-set?c=2649&from=accessory For example motorsports (Cars, Buggy, etc) applications is where you want to disable digital stabilization and add ND filter. Nothing worse than stabilization correcting the car movements and lack of motion blur. Inferior DR did you see a scientific test that measure the stops, if yes can you please post it as I'm curious. You seem to be very knowledgeable but your examples that you post are not what I would call "action" so not sure that claiming that this is not an action cam feels right. In between the avalanche of useless YT review there are some pieces that show the potential of the camera. From what I could see so far: Gopro 12 + 10 bit log + MAX LENS MOD (this for POV makes a big difference) + integrated mounting + a bit lighter + replaceable lens + 2.7k 240 + a bit better stabilization Insta360 Ace Pro + overall, it seems a bit better image quality. + low light + 2x "lossless crop" + 8k 24 (wish was at least 25) + better software + stats from Apple Watch + HDR mode seems more usable. In daylight it seems to me that the RS 1inch is still the best one and is now quite old.2 points -
Other than 120fps that is 4k only, everything else I shoot in RAW so is 8k (R5c has cropped RAW too but I don't use it as I prefer to crop myself). I'm a fan of RAW as it can be graded more heavily without breaking apart, good colorists (not like me 😉 ) can do great with 10bit log material, me less so. I also like that I don't need to set the WB upfront especially when I have zero time for setup or mistakes. I take a lot of stills out both horizontal and vertical, so the resolution helps. Also with 8k I can frame it a bit more loose and have some safety or is some case adding camera movements when the camera is fix like a fake panning, I add a bit of fake camera shake in Resolve to have it more natural. I normally deliver in 4k. I do archive in 8k.1 point

Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
John Matthews reacted to kye for a topic
They've registered two new cameras in China recently: According to 43rumours: https://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-officially-registered-another-new-model-in-china-we-now-have-two-cameras-coming-soon/ How long is it normally between wild YouTuber parties and NDAs elapsing?1 point -
GH7 or S1 replacement for sure. I hope it’s the latter because it’s far more interesting. To me anyway 😉1 point

GH4 colours and dynamic range? Great musicians, and so young talent. I wish the Dji filmer put some coins in their jar. This video was a gimbal test video and a great audio witness of the musicians, good handling and showcase of the gimbal, cinema verité it was not. Image seems in GH4 territory. Interesting enough for rent and evaluating the image quality oneself if they give them away for 20 a day. Wanna share bits of your footage, Dji or, heck, just anything of beautiful Lissabon? @Emanuel1 point

I love Conan, to me the champ of all latenighters. That guy has funny bones and of course a great and funny mind and a great team and sidekick. He is a cultural treasure beyond borders. I remember people who found him to be way too goofy for a relaxed watch and preferred Leno and Letterman, who both were more suited for a broad audience. Conan got rejected when trying to enter a snobster techno club in Berlin about two or three years ago. I don't mention the name on purpose. Real Estate Pros love to grab Eastgerman trademarks and turn them into elitaer technodiscos. I imagine some technofollowers would disagree with the connotation of disco. So Conans little act gave me tears of joy and gratitude. I enjoyed Kay on Digitalrev a big deal. It could have always been bigger, badder and better but it was the best available back then. What I came to not like were some gender based jokey remarks iirc. I enjoyed to "travel" Hong Kong as a youtube tourist, with Kay as a photo guide and camera talking guy. A Conan he is not indeed. But who is in the camera world. There is only one other guy i can watch as a whole for camera entertainment and that one is a funny grumpy polarbear in his rather blank living room. Hong Kong and guests and people of Hong Kong were exiting to wander and roam around.1 point

Easy, easy on us, it wasn't us who did this test.😊 Alexa with Prores HQ instead of the FX and that 10bit codec will shine with that gorgeous image. But yeah, the whole image pipeline is to be accounted.1 point

Washed out export of Sony a7iv footage w/ ProColor5
kye reacted to imnotspock for a topic
Yes sorry I did mean the Apple Finder preview (i press spacebar over the mp4 in Finder). Thanks for the link – i will have a proper read. Also good suggestion re exporting a .mov. One other possible solution I thought I'd try is switch to PP11 on the A7iv which is the new(ish) Sony S-Cinetone. It's not as nice as ProColor Venice in my opinion, but maybe it is designed to be universally interpreted the same way? Not sure if that's correct thinking but worth a shot. I haven't used Resolve but my instinct is that it's not an issue with the NLE as such, but maybe other programs misinterpreting the mp4. When the edited mp4 is broadcast on TV here in Australia, it looks fine, but on YouTube it looks very dark. Thank you very much! I will read closely today.1 point -

The biggest issue I have with laptops, besides the speed issues, is screen size. My desktop PC, where I do editing, has three 34" 4K monitors. That much screen real estate really makes it easier to edit video and photoshop stills and I'm not willing to give it up just to get portability.1 point -

I never really rated it that highly TBH. The format was a good idea... Top Gear of cameras, but it wasn't really was it. Kai is no Clarkson. Half the time he was just mucking about and he couldn't shoot, didn't have the eye for it. Style over substance. Whereas if they had executed on the format in a more creative way it would have been fantastic. Some proper jokes and personalities, not just the innuendo and mucking about, would have helped. Look at Conan's capers abroad. Hilarious. (Not bad for an American!)1 point -
Quiet appealing thumbi this time and tasty writeup, dear Emanuel. Love it. But will I click it?😂 @Emanuel I still won't click the first one, even though this are the times of fugly thumbnails. Especially because of these times I won't click it.😂 Actially, I find the new Dji compelling to play with. I imagine smaller rentals having them in their lineup. Would be fun to try one out.1 point

You have read several compelling accounts about NRaw here in this thread. Slashcam tested it on several occasions with best in class latitude, bettering S1H internal which is bettering R8 Canon Raw. Color fidelity is impressive. Andrews article shows a different perspective iirc, about difficulties to work it in post for best effect iirc. Give us your summary of it, if you find time. It's been written very early after that brandnew format came out. @Jedi Master1 point

Now that! It was super enjoyable to watch Kay on DigitalRev, always quirky, fun, exiting, even whimsical, great locations and occasions, colabs, just the whole thing. To delete that treasure is not only dumb but in a way crudest cultural vandalism the way they did it.1 point

One of the weirder moves in the YouTube sphere lately. Prob some kind of lawsuit by an ex-employee or something, seeing the way the channel imploded was not amicable at all. Management, talent, producers, the new guys. It was all really embarrassing considering they were one of the premier tech channels out here. They basically deleted their history as a brand (no one really visits their site, and if they did it was thanks to the YT channel). We'll see.1 point -

MacBook Pro - M2 or M3

If you don’t need portability, then get a desktop machine. The biggest issue limiting performance on a laptop is heat dissipation, which isn’t as much an issue in a desktop. Desktops can typically use CPUs with more and faster cores and much more performant GPUs that beat anything possible in a laptop.1 point -

PannySVHS reacted to eatstoomuchjam for a topic
Equivalent in Windows-land? It doesn't really exist. 12th/13th generation Intel has much better performance per watt than 11th generation, but the built-in GPU isn't anywhere near the performance of M1 so you'd need something with a dedicated GPU which won't be low power. If I'm guessing I'd say that an i7-12700 or i7-13700 with the laptop version of an RTX 4060 should be about similar to the performance of an M1 Max while plugged into the wall, but with the caveat that the Windows laptop will pull more power and be noisier (fans to remove the heat from using so much power). However, the second you unplug the laptop from the wall, the performance and battery life of the Windows system will be substantially worse than the M1 Max. You can find Windows laptops with more raw power than even the highest-end M3 Max - and desktops even more so, but the cost is that the power usage will be a lot higher. I'm too lazy to go look now, but I'd bet that an RTX 4090 all by itself uses more power at full load than an entire M3 Max laptop, including the screen. 😃1 point -
In all seriousness though, very sad. Such an iconic piece of photography history; I loved their stuff. I just got into video right as Kye was in his last year with DigitalRev, but suffice to say I really enjoyed his content and still enjoy his independent reviews.1 point
