After taking over Minolta, Sony took over the AF, mount and IBIS technology but did kind of almost nearly make a spiritual successor to the TC-1 with the Full Frame RX1 series with its Zeiss 35mm F2 lens that is very comparable to a GX80/85 form factor. Ignore the 64% thicker figure because they obviously measure the RX1R with the fixed lens and the GX80/85 as body only. It doesn't quite get the target weight of 200g but its still not a heavyweight (again weight is measured without lens on the GX80/85). Video is only 1080p and Sony don't appear to be interested in following it up with a new model despite the fact that the camera they were going after (the Leica Q) has had two more additional iterations in the meantime. So I doubt we'll see a new one with uprated video specs, which is a pity as despite its price it was a very nice camera but I'm guessing they can get more mileage out of people buying the A7CR and developing a lens addiction.2 points

8-bit REC709 is more flexible in post than you think
John Matthews and one other reacted to PannySVHS for a topic
Well, well:) 1. 10bit Vlog on the S1 smashes Pannys S1 8bit 709 like Bruce Lee kicked Chuck "chesthair superchamp" Norris' butt in the fake Collosseum of Rome. No contest. 2. Most part of the curve of 10bit log if not all should hold much more values than linear 709. 3. Alister Chapman shown that 10bit Slog2 held no disadvantage on the FS7 compared to its linear 12bit Raw output. Always a great presenter and a good reason to grab some chocolate milk and some cookies and watch a 2.5 hour presentation. I am applying kyes neat and effective form of presenting arguments. Careful! You're starting to sound like I do when people talk all kinds of crap about what is and isn't possible and I point out that the OG BMPCC was released basically a decade ago with lots of stuff that people say can't be done... and now todays cameras are worse in many ways and yet are more expensive.1 point -
No experience of recording to them from a camera directly, but I use a 500GB T7 (non-Shield) at home for video files, and we use several T7 Shield drives at work for daily off-site backups. Performance is good (and doesn't slow down noticeably when they being worked hard and get hotter) and so far they've been reliable, They also seem well built.1 point

It was until they got into serial numbers, date of production and defining what the "early 70s" actually meant as in a show that came out in September 74 had already had 37% of the 70s behind it so couldn't count. No, really. I am printing this out for the next time my wife says I waste too much time on the internet. Wait until a Welsh speaker goes on there and tells him the translation they use for cappuccino . It will blow his mind.1 point

World's smallest DSLM that shoots 4k?
John Matthews reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I had the chance to get one about four or five years ago for a reasonable price but went the poor man's route with a 2nd hand A7Rii and Samyang 35mm f2.8 thinking I was being smart because, hey, video and interchangeable lenses and its cheaper. Yeah, that was a bad call really as particularly now I'd have welcomed the simplicity of the RX1rII for everyday use. And as you say its held its value !1 point -

Yes that would be a good niche for them. I had high hopes for them to be coming up with innovative stuff but from what they've offered so far it feels more like a management buyout/sweat the brand name affair. I think the latter was kind of expected so its a great pity really that it currently looks like that is the reality. Sigma have the background in making fixed lens APS-C compacts with f2.8 lenses in the original DP series (before they went weird with the design of the latter ones!) so even not withstanding them using Merrill they could make a very nice CMOS based fixed lens APS-C camera with good video facilities in it and an even faster lens now. They've been very quiet for a while so you never know.1 point -

My mate had one of these when they first came out and, although it was pretty useless for video, the stills it produced were lovely (and way ahead of their time). Extreme jealousy ensued as the price tag (even now, s/h) was eye-watering.1 point -
The big issue a while back was people making their first post to ask a benign question so it got through the initial moderation and then editing their post a couple of days later to insert a link to some spam nonsense. They then invariably replied to their own post with "Thanks everyone, I've found the solution" whilst inserting more spam links into that. When the edit was removed we then had a series of "Please advise me which camera to get" posts from first time posters who then disappeared never to return. The reason they never returned is they couldn't edit their posts to put the spam link in. These threads wasted a lot of good intentioned advice from regular posters. On balance, I think preventing that kind of stuff (which was rife at one point) is worth not having an edit function for, particularly as we have had some absolutely mind numbing pedantry on here of late which would be made worse if people who want to argue a point into the ground could go back and edit their bullshit in order to remove an assertion that was proved wrong. Incidentally, I saw a thread on Gearspace recently about the use of the MiniMoog in TV scoring in the early 70s and I would swear that at least one poster involved in it must be on here under different names.1 point

Yes, I use an AFX focusing system* on mine for AF-C of native and adapted electronic lenses and motor control of manual focus ones (both on BM or other cameras). The removal/inactivation of BLE in this new camera means that such control will not be possible for native and adapted lenses and will be motor only. Which is a bit silly really as if I can control a Sigma 18-35mm electronically, why would I want to have to then strap a follow focus ring on to it and bulk up the rig with a motor. * Well, technically speaking I suppose you could say its a 3rd party device for other people who use them but its a 1st party device when I'm using one as I created it.1 point

I try to do this. But that is not how my brain works. I only see my mistakes immediately AFTER I have pressed the "submit" button! haha Yeah, it's a pity. I feel that the timer should be longer. Say if it was an hour long. Then if you post, then someone else replies at some point in the future, and you then reply back after trying to edit it, welllll..... the hour probably has expired already? (for instance, your reply to me just now, over two hours has passed!) But if you're just taking your time to read through the thread, and you get other thoughts you want to add to your post as you read further into the thread, well it's unlikely you'll take longer than a whole hour to read to the end of the thread?1 point

Wrestling with this also… A decade ago, I had 20:20 vision and did not even consider how anything else would impact my work (shooting). These days, I need 2 pairs of specs. Readers for reading and editing plus varifocals for shooting. I can use the EVF but almost exclusively shoot with the rear LCD bouncing between video and stills all day long as I do. Which is a reason why rear LCD’s under 2000 (whatever the units are) are not great for me. Another area where I prefer S1H over S5ii for instance and why most Sony cameras to me are not great. I am looking (no pun intended) at laser this year, but we’ll see (pun intended)…1 point

With extreme wincing back in the day. When I used to live in the UK and shoot church weddings, it was very hit and miss whether you could even get permission to shoot and often it was only by pleading that you would be as stealthy as a mouse. KER LICK KER LICK KER LICK KER LICK And then electronic shutter came along. Shutter button feel is more a personal preference as in I would prefer a damped option but could live without it. Sound is non-negotiable to me these days though. I can’t be invisible and I cannot always be totally silent, but I do practice stealth as much as is practically possible and KER LICK is not part of that equation.1 point

I remember reading there was so sort of compatibility issues with BMD cameras and the newer Samsung drives? But checking it out quickly shows this post from a couple of days ago, saying T9 is all good: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=190756 This post says T7 is bad: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=165083 But now the SamsungT7 Shield Portable SSD 1TB / 2TB / 4TB is listed as supported: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59025 So they found a way?? And updated the firmware. (as the 2nd forum post was a little while ago) Thus either would be fine??? If the price difference is only small, get the T9 Edit: ahhhh... it was about the Shield vs non-Shield versions of the T7: https://www.reddit.com/r/videography/comments/17kglkn/blackmagic_ursa_mini_pro_46k_g2_samsung_t9_ssd/1 point

In recent years, there have been a few, but mainly at the long end where size REALLY matters. I think Canon made a 600mm F/11 (fixed aperture). IMO, in terms of size, it still doesn't compete well with the Panasonic 100-300mm. Fast and wide lenses on FF will probably be impossible to beat for M43. Even a 24mm f/1.8 on FF won't be beaten by a auto-focus version of the equivalent on M43. However, there are other lenses in the middle that make more sense. A very small and light-weight FF body with a tiny F/4 lens could kill M43 unless more effort is made to make a smaller M43 body. There is still a market for M43. I've seen prices on the used market go up and up. It's not as if people are really dumping M43 without more new shooters buying in. There is still demand and its high. If Panasonic developed a GM1-sized camera more pancake updates, wouldn't people buy it? Or, would people say "my FF camera is small enough; I'll just use a phone on the go".1 point -

Obviously this depends on your individual preferences, but after much playing around with controllers and setups, I found the following as a pretty good workflow: In Resolve, use the Source Tape mode in the Cut page to queue up all clips in the order shot Using the J-K-L keys you can play backwards, stop, or forwards (and holding K and pressing J or L moves one frame) Hit I to create an In Point, Hit O to create an Out Point, and I mapped P to be Insert This is literally the same process as a tape machine, just without the jog wheel. If you want the Jog Wheel then the Speed Editor wheel feels top-notch to me - weighty and smooth. More recently I found an approach that uses the "gaming" keys, and this involves putting all the clips onto a timeline, then use JKL in combination with Q as Start To Playhead, W as Split Clip, and E as End To Playhead. This is similar to setting In and Out points, but cutting away the unwanted tails on the clips. I combined that with A and S which Swap Clips left and right, to quickly move clips around, and D for deleting a clip. This setup doesn't use a jog wheel but is fast and intuitive. One thing I learned in all my editing and colour grading workflows and controllers and customisations was that I could get by just fine with just a keyboard and mouse, and that Resolve is actually setup pretty well for that. YMMV of course, but if you're able to use Resolve and not be tempted to hit all the buttons, having a workflow that only has the buttons you need can work pretty well. One thing I realised from the Olympus 15mm F8 body cap lens is that if you make a lens slower you can make it drastically smaller, but unfortunately it looks like FF lens manufacturers just don't do it for some reason. For example, the 14mm F2.5 is equivalent to a 28mm F5 lens, both in terms of DoF and light gathering (taking into account the fact that a FF sensor is 4x the size) but where are the F5.6 prime lenses for FF? Are there any at all? What about F4 primes? Any of those? We know that MFT with fast lenses becomes large very quickly, but it seems to me that FF could make very small lenses but the PR department from the Cult of Ultra-Fast Lenses seems to have prevented anyone from actually making one.1 point -
Ah, sorry.. I missed the mention of it being on a gimbal, where obviously you lose the ability to touch the camera or lens. Makes sense now, and yeah, having a wireless control of some kind where you don't need to buy new hardware would be optimal. I have a vague recollection of someone on YT saying that the BM camera app is actually a camera control app where the first camera it controls is the internal iPhone camera, but that the roadmap will be that it adds control for BM cameras. That would effectively give every BM camera a smartphone-sized touchscreen interface. I think that was just speculation, but if true would definitely be a very nice user experience. and SSD. The AF on the P2K is better than nothing but only marginally, but it seems like the M4K has a much newer sensor so I'll be keen to see how much the AF is improved. If the AF is improved and the images are compelling, this will be the closest I'll have come to buying a new camera in quite some time.1 point

GH4 was the second dslm/r camera with 4K after the Canon 1DC afaik. And it was the first affordable one and approachable one with its 4K 100mbit codec. First 4k dslr from Nikon must have been the D500 i think. @sanveer1 point

Remote focus control doesn’t mean it needs to be auto focus. They are not the same thing. It is precisely because BM cameras don’t have continuous autofocus (well mine do actually) that a remote follow focus is required. Claiming that people don’t use current BM cameras on gimbals because they don’t have continuous autofocus is a complete nonsense. The box nature of this new one makes it even more applicable as it is easier to balance.1 point

12g sdi in and out, hdmi out, usb-c. these are great to rig up the camera using 15mm rail system. hope the bottom has an additional locking pin socket in addition to the apparent 1/4 or 3/8 socket. i experience a lot that the rails rotate due to only one socket at the bottom of the camera (mostly dslr or mirrorless, not the camcorder type body) i think this one can pair with a ninja v or v+ or a bmva 12g 5 inch, a t5/7/9 ssd, some smallrig cage specifically designed for this. at $2000, this can be very useful and low profile, good for traveling or street shooting. also importantly, u43 sensor means a lot of 43 or u43 lenses can have latest 4k raw recording capability. this one bmcc4k g2 vs g9 ii, or paired with g9 ii, can be a powerful setup for being small and nimble, yet modern and high res.1 point

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but glad your wife seems to be on the other end of her cancer! Well, your loss of work cannot be do to your skill set! That is some of the nicest work I've seen posted on this site! Really top notch! I love the Super 8 film/emulations and the B&W baseball footage! Is the C70 your workhorse? I'd love to know every camera used for every shot because we all know it's all about the camera... Btw, I'm pretty sure I still owe you a c-mount test. It's been a rough year for me and I have considered giving up on filmmaking altogether. I've definitely shifted a lot of my effort back to writing and I've been working on some audio dramas. With that said, I did get a chance to go out and shoot a little over the holidays and I am getting the bug back, so we'll see. I have a bunch of stuff to sell... cameras and lenses but I'd like to do that c-mount test with the BMMCC before I sell it. Does the C70 have a S16 crop mode? Also how do you like the Scarlet?1 point

Mid-budget, mid-talent, mid-serious recommendations.
IronFilm reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
An option I've embraced that really keeps things simple is to forgo AF in video production. How I shoot is exactly how you say you'd like to shoot. It keeps it simple and once you train yourself how to be adept at manually focusing you'll find their are numerous techniques that'll carry the day. Also, there's something wonderfully organic about getting shots that float in and out of focus and then have a human hand pull it sharp. Now, to be fair, I am extremely short sighted, so it's actually a bit of a camera-operator super power I have. I can look at a LCD monitor 2 inches from my face and really see what's going on in perfect vision comfort. When I'm wearing my contact lenses and have to use "readers" eye-glasses to see things close the vision gets more challenging. Anyway. Manual focus. Something to consider anyway.1 point -

Leaving Bluetooth control out of it is a ridiculous decision. There are of course different ways to control it and yes it is primarily for broadcast but they must know full well that this camera is going to find its way into a lot of filmmaker's hands (hence why they've included the recording features) and in particular onto a lot of gimbals. Leaving out the option to control it without those other pieces of interfacing gear is real cripple hammer territory. If its in there but just disabled then they really should enable it toot suite. At least the original micro had the expansion port connector to enable controllers to be made for it.1 point

Classic BTM... haha! I must admit, I'd really like a ZF but I'll have to wait a couple years for that one. You're right, though about Panasonic... they used to be punk rock, now they're Rick Roll. He really is making a lot of videos. Camera Conspiracy can be a bit much, but I appreciate the shorter videos compared to others that force a 20 minute video out of a 10 minute subject. With that said, I'm probably going to buy another GH6. I didn't love it the first time around m, but I think I was being too picky and I have a different... use-case for it now. Honestly, I'm kinda tired of all cameras right now.1 point
