Thanks largely to Andrew's original post, many people here already know that Shane Carruth shot 2013's excellent indie feature Upstream Color with a pair of hacked GH2s. At the time, aspiring filmmakers everywhere found inspiration that such a masterful film was created with such an accessible consumer camera. It still stands up today as a beautiful, challenging, thought-provoking film: I just happened across some behind the scenes photos on Reddit posted almost a decade after the film's release. I've always wondered about the technical particulars of how this film was made and even though what was posted is pretty low-res and deteriorated further with early Instagram filters, it does show some pretty bare-bones camera rigs and a lot of natural light. As I enter my forties and the dream of creating a meaningful narrative film in my lifetime seems to slip further and further out of reach, this is just the kind of inspirational kick in the pants that I needed. If 8-bit, 4:2:0 AVCHD from a Micro Four Thirds sensor was enough to create an immersive story like this in 2013, then the never-ending pursuit of marginally improved gear and software really is just a giant, capitalism-fueled distraction -- one that I know that I use to put off the very real possibility that when I buckle down to make something deeply personal, I might not have anything to say. But I also know that it will be my deepest regret if I never even try. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that my own thoughts and ideas aren't particularly novel or unique, so maybe others on this board will connect with this too.

The relationship between a cameras image and the emotional experience of the viewer are connected, but a compelling story will completely overwhelm the image quality. I know there is no discussion on here about what happens to images once they're captured (and much discussion is relevant to only single images) but I think that the image quality is part of the last 10% of polish on top of a finished piece. Love is still love, even if it's in SD Heartbreak is still devastating even if shot on Alexa Betrayal is still ugly even if using Canon colour science Emotions are still colourful even if filmed in B&W If you want to make a feature then go ahead and make one. You are probably already familiar with Noam Kroll and the principles of writing the film you can make, starting with what you have access to and working backwards. I think that probably everyone is capable of making a feature film of significance if they were able to look within and tell a story inspired by their own struggles. Until recently all of TV was in worse quality than every FHD camera on the planet, and millions or billions of stories were told. Don't let colour subsampling and DR distract you from the fact that the human experience is universal, and that what separates a good film from a bad one is how much the audience can relate emotionally to what they see.

Compact travel definitely rx100vii or vi hands down, 2 of my friends went to compact big zoom DC for travel and leave their mirrorlees behind at home. One guy sold his Tamron 28-200mm too cause even that is big for him. For me I probably get osmo pocket 3 for my compact travel gimbal camera.. can't assed bring an actual gimbal.

Has anyone invested time into thinking about this? - not me. but you have several times before over the course of last year. The iPhone 15 with log may be the win for ultimate travel ease - good pair of shoes is. Phone without log is lighter though. but curious about the quality bump and portability of these two bad boys. - watch markuspix and save big money. who needs bad boys. The smaller the footprint the less barrier to entry and more desirability to create - not at all. joy of using is. Buy any 3 of these you keep on mentioning. I think you really want to, considering your posts of the last one or two years. Meanwhile with a grain of salt but very entertaining and informative.

No, not invested any time thinking about it, but cost aside, hands down the A7C II (for me) because of the ability to crop much more than the APSC camera based on both sensor size and mp, regardless of lens type or focal length. I did look at this camera a few months back and if my memory serves, in 2 areas it was a hard no for me: Relatively low res LCD. Single card slot. Actually I looked at the A7CR with even greater capacity to crop…but then decided I’d rather have (if I was hypothetically going to go on this direction) the A7VR which is actually my favourite ‘compact’ mirrorless of the moment. But budgets and sizes creeping up here…

That's more like the performance I remember from previous models. Field curvature is a thing, which he doesn't test in the video, so that might be the cause of some edge softness. For example here is an article with graphs: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/11/practical-use-of-field-curvature-graphs-the-50mm-primes/ It is odd that such a setup would have these issues more than the lens itself, considering that I thought the setup was just the lens projecting onto ground glass that the phone focused on. Or are there additional optics inside the mechanism? If so, that's probably the cause. The focus peaking not showing up is just because the setup is very soft, this is a common problem when using vintage lenses.

For what and to whom? The Z6ii is not out of date for me. I would not get one myself for video work but for photo, meets ALL my needs. Ideally, I would not mind having 45mp, but 1250 (used Z6ii) vs 4000 (used Z8) euros, err, no. And the Z6ii has slightly better DR, lower noise and better battery life plus is a more compact unit (without additional grip). So maybe you have some reasoning in that you have not explained, but perfectly 'in date' for many users?!

I don’t know. I mean, I really do not know. I am pretty happy with the video side of these. And the stills. I like the ergos, mostly. I don’t like the clunky shutter mechanism. It’s not an issue for video and some stills users are OK with it. I am not. My other issue is the lenses. Great glass, pretty much all of it, but the Lumix zooms are big and heavy and the 1.8’s plasticky and boring. I mostly prefer the Sigma lenses, the primes and the smaller zooms but the issue for me (and I did not work out the issue until I was quite heavily invested) was the lack of the lenses I was looking for; fast ‘my use case/need’ zooms such as: Canon 28-70mm f2 Canon 24-105mm f2.8 Tamron 35-150mm f2/2.8 Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 I can’t justify the cost of switching to Canon as the cost is crazy money. I could make a case for Sony, but I would rather not. Nikon for me is the best all-round option for me right now as the relatively affordable Tamron lenses can be easily adapted with essentially native performing AF plus have great image quality for stills. Arguably they all do if you know what you are doing, ie, capture well, shoot raw and edit/grade at a decent level. Great IBIS in the most recent models such as the Z9, Z8 and now Zf. Great AF and speed. I’d love a Z9 for the use case I intend, but at over 5k, I’ve asked myself whether that is worth it to me and my business and my financial brain says not. I kind of like the Z8, but prefer the Z9 and the fact it’s 1k less does not swing it for me. I can’t make a decision on a Z6iii because it does not yet exist and may not in time for me. So the Z6ii, inc. battery grip, readily available on the used market in ‘like new’ condition at 1600 euros? As I said before, a bit of a no-brainer and the most likely option for me. Happy with the S1H on static duty with the S5ii roaming run & gun on the video side of things with the Zf doing candid stills and most likely, a Z6ii on the shoulder for everything else. 4 bodies is something I hoped to move away from, never mind 4 non-identical bodies…but here I am. There will be one or two detractors who will say, “but you will change it out by the end of the year” and maybe I will, but as long as I turned over €XX,000, that’s cool. Bottom line is I think Nikon are pretty strong right now, especially when you factor in the adapted e Mount options. Possibly slightly less so on a pure video POV, but for hybrid and stills, right up there. But then, none of this stuff is really weak and our skill sets are probably always going to be our weakest element.

I try to do this. But that is not how my brain works. I only see my mistakes immediately AFTER I have pressed the "submit" button! haha Yeah, it's a pity. I feel that the timer should be longer. Say if it was an hour long. Then if you post, then someone else replies at some point in the future, and you then reply back after trying to edit it, welllll..... the hour probably has expired already? (for instance, your reply to me just now, over two hours has passed!) But if you're just taking your time to read through the thread, and you get other thoughts you want to add to your post as you read further into the thread, well it's unlikely you'll take longer than a whole hour to read to the end of the thread?

Ah, sorry.. I missed the mention of it being on a gimbal, where obviously you lose the ability to touch the camera or lens. Makes sense now, and yeah, having a wireless control of some kind where you don't need to buy new hardware would be optimal. I have a vague recollection of someone on YT saying that the BM camera app is actually a camera control app where the first camera it controls is the internal iPhone camera, but that the roadmap will be that it adds control for BM cameras. That would effectively give every BM camera a smartphone-sized touchscreen interface. I think that was just speculation, but if true would definitely be a very nice user experience. and SSD. The AF on the P2K is better than nothing but only marginally, but it seems like the M4K has a much newer sensor so I'll be keen to see how much the AF is improved. If the AF is improved and the images are compelling, this will be the closest I'll have come to buying a new camera in quite some time.

Remote focus control doesn’t mean it needs to be auto focus. They are not the same thing. It is precisely because BM cameras don’t have continuous autofocus (well mine do actually) that a remote follow focus is required. Claiming that people don’t use current BM cameras on gimbals because they don’t have continuous autofocus is a complete nonsense. The box nature of this new one makes it even more applicable as it is easier to balance.
