Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
eatstoomuchjam and one other reacted to John Matthews for a topic
Apparently, l-rumors.com/43rumors.com bans you if you question why, after his seeing and shooting the camera, he can't say any more information. To know any answers, you need to sign up for his BS newsletter, subscribe to his BS YouTube channel, watch his incessant ad-copy, self-promos, and BS clickbait several times a day. Those sites are clearly milking info for personal profit at all costs. I sure hope Panasonic isn't working with him as it will be a dealbreaker for me if I find out (and I'm fairly sure they are). I will no longer be going to any of that guy's websites ever again for any reason.2 points -
I second that notion, leaving these rumor sites outside the activity of Panny staff. I have been an admirer of the GX85, the usuabiltiy, the strong 8bit 4k codec in sufficient light and the great colour science for color work in Davinci Resolve. I also like the tactility. The GX8 is a pretty camera to hold and to look at, seemingly the true m43 leica whereas the GX85 is compromized by its size in that regard and in comparison. I only had a chance to play with someones camera for a few minutes but it was very enyoyable. On a sidenote, when I was checking out the classy GX7 in a store about eleven years ago, it was the prettiest of all digital cameras in my eyes but with a big design flaw. The grip heigth was too much shortened so that my fingers got easily in the way of the AF light. The succeeding GX8 solved that issue but lost some of the sheer beauty in appearance. I also love the GF1, though very slippery. The GX1, a more modern version and true successor, much more than the GF2 ever was, has the much better 16 MP sensor that's also inside the G3, GX7, GM1/5, G6/7, GH3, GH4, GX85... Still a nice sensor capable of stunning color and results. The GF1 12 MP sensor was a bit of shyte even in 2013 when I bought mine.:) Still got an Olympus EPl1 and EP2 with the same sensor. You know what, talking about sensors, I never owned a GH2. Wondering how that sensor would fare me for photography. Too bad flickr is not any fun anymore to browse through.1 point

Changed my mind. I have been playing with this for a month. Wide tracking is a significant improvement for bird videos. While having to select the subject is still a bit of a PITA with an eye to the eyecup I have come to grips with it. I have turned off touch screen and keep the tracking box in the middle of the viewfinder. Select start tracking, hit record and then compose the shot. Works well. Would be terrific if the FujiFilm would allow me to map the start tracking to another button--say the red record button. Then, I could start tracking with the red record button, then move the same finger to the shutter release to start recording the video.1 point

The Panasonic S5 for me. Better internal video quality than the S5II and not as big as the S1 and S1H. Of course the S5II has better AF, but I can't stand the internal video engine of this camera. The GH6 when using 5,7K ProRes is a good alternative too.1 point

Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
PannySVHS reacted to John Matthews for a topic
I can understand the reasons for not having an EVF, especially if there's a super-bright panel on it (there's not). I've had a fairly decent experience with the GX800 by putting a non-glare screen protector on it, but it's still not ideal. I will definitely be asking Sean of LUMIX USA the question if they are giving info to l-rumors.com or 43rumors.com. I know he's commented on those websites in the past, saying they had "wild and incorrect" information. My message: don't work with those website! Although I've never tried the GX8, there are so many people that simply love it, even after having the GX80/85, and the GX9 available with newer everything. One of these day, I'm going to have to pick one up. What exactly was the feature that you loved so much about it?1 point -
I'd imagine that the ML folks would be pretty good at getting the RAW sensor readout, so the DR of each implementation should be the same as the RAW still images, so perhaps just look those up to compare?1 point

Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
John Matthews reacted to PannySVHS for a topic
The leaked images look a bit ugly as well. Maybe the released camera is much prettier. No mechanical shutter? Yikes. That and no evf are very unappealing to me. GX8 has a great design. It should be big enough to house a full frame camera inside.1 point -

So, I guess the pancake is a 26mm f8 manual focus lens. What were they thinking? I guess I'll stick with my GX800 + 14mm f/2.5 as it's probably better in every way if the goal is "small".1 point -
This is a good video summary where they tested various aspects to see what mattered.. However, as someone who actually uses Resolve on a low-end machine where I hit the limitations of it all the time, the two biggest points were: Different parts of Resolve (Edit page, Colour page, Fusion) use different aspects of the computer (CPU, GPU, RAM) Once your machine can edit smoothly on the footage / codec / timeline settings you have, getting a better spec only improves render times but doesn't impact your experience of using it1 point

Heavens above! I am enjoying this camera (AX53) so much! The zoom is fabulous. The size and convenience coupled with the internal stabilisation and - I might be repeating myself - that zoom is a winning combination. Yes, the image isn’t up there with the best but one wouldn’t expect it to be. But as a tool to take out, have some fun and create some images to enjoy it’s fabulous. I’m glad I stumbled into this thread!1 point

If I could only have ONE CAMERA
ita149 reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
Panasonic S5 Is mirrorless full frame, can use my existing lenses Has good video and photo quality (10 bit, good DR) Lightweight enough to bring backpacking Comfortable to carry/hold for viewfinder-based photography Has pixel shift high res for specific VFX uses I'm not sure the S5 II has enough benefits to justify the price increase compared to used hand S5. The part I'd miss about the S5 II are the solid neck strap rings 😂 In fact I'm planning on getting an S5 to replace the A7RII as my photo camera, and MAYBE for some video... I'm open to other suggestions. The big pieces I would upgrade if I could are rolling shutter, and battery life. I guess that's assuming it's truly 1 camera, for photos and videos. If video, an UMP 4.6k or 12k looks pretty nice: good balance between quality, ease of use, realistically priced for me (unlike an Alexa 35), and not too annoying for solo operation.1 point -
If I could only have ONE CAMERA
PannySVHS reacted to Benjamin Hilton for a topic
Totally an FX6 for me. I'd love for it to be an Alexa 35, but I know with the crazy amounts of content I have to produce on a daily basis it would be more of a hinderance than a help.1 point -
Even if budget was no option, sadly it's the GX85 for me, and that's a very compromised option in almost every way, but is the right balance of trade-offs. In a way I'm lucky that my best camera isn't ridiculously expensive, but also, it means there is nothing I can do to work towards a better setup.1 point

I 100% can and do see that, I agree. Know quite a few people who don't do narratives any more because of those hours and grind it takes on your life, focusing instead on something else like docos or commercials. If image quality is what you want, then yeah ARRI AMIRA is "the best" ENG camera. Not so good in some other areas though (like size, weight, powering demands!). I think the big reason people would use the nanoflash recorder with it was just so they could have anything which was better than that lightweight 35mbs codec One with 2/3" & B4 mount? So you mean the Panasonic AG-HPX500 perhaps? There is one on eBay right now that just got listed for US$545: https://www.ebay.com/itm/266503459184 If you can settle for the GH4 sensor instead there is the Panasonic DVX200! 😛 Wish they'd kept on updating the DVX200 each time there was a new GH series sensor. Or even better, let you swap out the lens on the DVX200!1 point
