I can’t speak for YouTubers but one of my previous roles was writing magazine features and product reviews. In addition, I also covered the press only product launches and the major trade shows such as IBC, NAB and AES. At no time during any of that was I provided with prostitutes by any manufacturer. And God knows I asked them enough times.5 points

Yes, I'd say that was a sign of growth. * Although growth is unsurprising with all these free prostitutes incessantly knocking on the door.4 points

The Single Most important thing, "has Gerald been invited or Not?" On a more serious note, I feel Panasonic can squeeze out another 1/2 of dynamic range (from the G9ii) by tweaking the VLog, improving heat management and improving the Sensor coating further. That's 11.8 (G9ii) + 0.5 stops. That Full Frame territory. A few flavours of ProRes, BRAW and RAW wouldn't be too bad. They could shrink that horrible YAGH attachment that they made for the GH4, to about 1/3rd it's size, and have external multiple flavour RAW in the recorder.4 points

Honestly I think sticking with the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 Lens as the "freebie / promotional lens" would have done far less harm to the S9 launch, than that f8 manual focus lens! Even though the 50mm is quite big, at least it wouldn't have generated so much negativity being bundled with the S9. (although yeah, I think ideally Panasonic should develop a 45mm f2/8 lens that's very compact, or something like that) What was wrong with the GH4?? It was revolutionary for its time!3 points
-
Would be wild if Panasonic delivers raw in the GH7 via "an external unit" But the external unit is merely a battery grip with an extra card slot.3 points

I’m guilty of getting lenses; then, selling them and buying them back. I did it with: Pany 14mm, Pany 14-42.5 PZ, Pany 45-150mm, Pany 35-100 kit lens, and I’m forgetting one or two.2 points -

And yet Biden has achieved more bipartisan legislation than any president going back for decades. The Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the PACT Act, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, plus numerous programs and EOs combatting Climate Change, protecting equal marriage, reducing racial inequality etc etc. He's actually one of the most consequential presidents in living memory. It's frankly rather astonishing that he isn't a shoo-in in an election where his opponent is a three-time loser, adjudicated rapist and convicted felon.2 points -
I think the the RED patents cover only compressed RAW in-camera recording, so using an external RAW recorder does not infringe them. Blackmagic RAW is partly de-mosaiced, color space converted and processed before compression, so is a bit 'grey area' as to whether it's really raw anyway in the file. But the point is that it's designed to provide what you might call 'raw equivalent' post-processing flexibility. From a YT video about BM RAW (the three processing blocks on the left are in-camera): A Blackmagic RAW patent - https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/71/7a/bb/ae23088049e011/US20180367775A1.pdf - and the abstract from it:2 points

June 5 looks like the video maker's holiday. Double announcement Pana and Canon. Rumors run wild. https://www.43rumors.com/ft3-panasonic-lumix-gh7-to-be-announced-soon/ https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-usa-to-launch-new-cinema-eos-product-on-june-5/ If a GH7 really comes out, I'll have to break my piggy bank. P.S. I wonder if Gerald will have had one of these machines on test 😉2 points

Varicam RAW is uncompressed DPX with an external unit. Source: https://na.panasonic.com/us/trends/raw-capture-varicam-lt-and-convergent-design-odyssey-7q They could go the FP route and just have uncompressed Cinema DNG files, but it's not particularly elegant. Panasonic and BM are both part of the L-mount alliance, and MFT is an open standard from Panasonic and Olympus, so in a way they're agreements, but Panasonic also supported external RAW with Atomos who are a competing ecosystem to BRAW / Resolve, so I would estimate that Panasonic and BM aren't secret best friends.2 points

ProRes RAW is not owned by Atomos in any way. It's Apple's codec. The biggest problem thus far is that it's raw enough that it seems to violate Red's patent. Black Magic raw, on the other hand, is apparently less raw in such a way that it skirts it (or at least, BM haven't been perceived as enough of a thread for Red to take any sort of legal action against it)2 points -
I think Samyang getting that L mount version of the 35-150mm over the line might bode well for the S9 if they can now also start bringing their compact prime lenses over to L mount too. I have their 35mm f2.8 in E mount, for example, and it would be ideal for the S9 and is available for around £220. They also have a number of others in the same range such as 24mm etc that are form factor appropriate for the S9.1 point

The lens options for L Mount has been my issue with them not being the all round best option for me that I had hoped for. Yes, there are a ton on lenses and some of them some of my absolute faves, mainly the Sigma Contemporary like such as 20mm f2, 65mm f2, 90mm f2.8 and 28-70mm f2.8 and I really like the latest 70-200mm f2.8…except it’s size and weight. And the latter point is my principal issue. I can give not just a pass, but a very good case for larger and heavier lenses if they offer something I need or want. The new Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 is a case in point. Squeaks in under my self-imposed 1kg limit…just…but then that is it for L Mount which for me lacks stuff such as Canon’s 28-70 f2 and their 24-105 f2.8 plus Tamron’s 35-150 f2/2.8. I really hope that Sigma are working on some other more interesting (to me) stuff and would settle for a 45-90mm f1.8 brother to this latest Sigma lens because I could build a system around those 2 lenses for sure. Or something to rival that Tamron 35-150, but less bulky and ugly like the Samyang version. I love the pairing of the 10-25 and 25-50 f1.8 zooms in M4/3 and in my ideal world, I just want to see an internal zooming full frame version of these, ie 20-50 and 50-100 because that would be just nuts for me. Or maybe the new GH7 will come out of left field for me and allow this… 🤓1 point

Gee, didn't realize the existing options for Panasonic was so bad: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/Mirrorless-Camera-Lenses/ci/17912/N/4196380428?sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH&filters=fct_brand_name%3Apanasonic%2Cfct_lens-mount_3442%3Aleica-l-mount%2Cfct_lenses-kits_7315%3Alenses-only%2Cfct_zooms-primes_5903%3Aprime-lenses $600 for a 35mm f1.8 or $800 for a 24mm f1.8 or $900 for an 18mm f1.8! They really needed to develop a cheaper lens, even if means a compromise on image quality, even if it means it is slower (but not slower than f4) to cater to the wide angle needs of S9 users. 20mm f4 would have been a fantastic lens for the selfie shooter. Throw in a mid-wide like a 35mm f2.8 at a very cheap price, and you'd have lots of happy S9 users.1 point -
From memory.... yes? (in the case specifically of the Sonys) As they use their proprietary smart shoe connection, which connects to the base of the handle. But then at the top of the handle there is another proprietary smart shoe connection which is where the audio module is attached to it.1 point

It boggles my mind that from a population of 333 million, those 2 are the ‘best’ options. I know, I know, there is more to it than that and ultimately it all comes down to how much you got and who’s backing you etc, combined with just how many skeletons you have in that back closet, but faaaaaark, to the rest of the World (and a massive chunk of the US), as above, boggles the mind!1 point -

Agree that the f8 manual lens is something of an abomination and did the launch no favours…but, this thing is being marketed as the content creators/bloggers camera so needs a wide angle. Personally, I think any tool is defined by how you use it and the S9 could be used in any number of roles except perhaps, ultimate photo camera and long take video camera. But why they didn’t develop a faster, AF lens at the same time is a bit shortsighted if not bizarre? Other brands have had for years some pancake(ish) budget options…1 point -
If you want a cinema camera that behaves close-ish to how a modern mirrorless camera is, then it sounds like you want a Sony FX30. They're on sale now: US$1,599 (waiting for them become sub $1K on eBay!)1 point

This here is both a top handle and an audio accessory. If you want to mount a mini short gun such as the Deity SMic3S or a Sanken CS1e then this is the logical way to do it, be using a top handle too. So let's ignore the top handle for a moment, as that size doesn't matter. Can the audio accessory actually be made any smaller? It really can't be, not significantly so. Not if you wish to keep full size XLR inputs plus the knobs/switches for direct control over it (vs doing menu deep diving). Which is the entire point of it!!1 point -
It seems strange to me that because a cinema camera is small that somehow it is judged like a P&S rather than a cinema camera. Many/most cinema cameras lack IBIS and reliable AF-C today, and even P&S cameras smaller than GX85 lack IBIS. It is a pity that they didn't have a bigger grip / battery though. One good way to do it would be to look at the smallest lens that would practically be used (which in this case is the 14mm F2.5 or 20mm F1.7) and then make the grip just smaller than that.1 point

well the BMPCC for its niche as a very low budget "cinema camera" I think can kinda hold up and live without IBIS, HFR (still has 60fps, enough for most purposes), great audio, or great AF. Because that's the type of camera it is (of course, it was aimed at bird photographers, then yeah, you need a totally different feature set!) It's only in the last couple of years or so do I think the lack of 4K is becoming more of an issue as it ages. But yes, sadly the battery situation of the BMPCC has always been its biggest weakness, they should have just used a slightly bigger grip and gone with perhaps a NP-F550 or similar battery.1 point

The world's first F1.8 full-frame mirrorless zoom has arrived...
IronFilm reacted to KnightsFan for a topic
Awesome lens. Sigma is definitely one of my favorite companies in the camera and lens world. It's not a huge zoom range, but 28 and 50 are basically the only two primes I use regularly. 45 isn't quite 50, but if you're looking to cover a LOT of scenarios without compromising on speed or sharpness, it looks like a great choice. Too bad they couldn't put a linear focus ring on it. It's so difficult to use something like this with a wireless follow focus. Maybe they'll eventually make a cine version, like their 24-35.1 point -

We're all aware of the exploitation of people and countries resources... But you're gonna have a hard time convincing anyone that Panasonic has honey potted a bunch of camera nerds with prostitutes so that they'll shill their cameras. I assure you, 98% of them only need a free trip and free swag to do it. Hell, half of them will do it if they get a nice email from some PR person pretending they're interested in their opinions and feedback.1 point -

If I could have only one camera... After going out filming with the Bmpcc 6 days in a row I must say, Wow factor and big-to-small Fail factor have been provided generously by this little camera. I had mentioned the S1H as my cam of choice but here we go, Bmpcc won me over, S1H has not even been looked at for my week of golden hour roaming and filming. Still, "that one camera" has not been made for me yet. Bmpcc with reliable power monitoring, 1h recording time and focus zoom assist would make it such a much better camera. 2.5K 60p and full Hdmi, now that's "that one camera" category for me. A 4K M43 fairchild sensor with additional S16 mode and various aspect ratios would make it my "perfect camera". I'd sing that silly song like the camera conspiracies guy with all of the verses, but only once.:) I don't need super low light, nor Ibis nor what not. It's amazing how close manufacturers get but yet how long they keep resisting to deliver the essential pocketable camera. The og pocket and the bmmcc have the best image quality for the painterly look and for small pockets and for small pockets worth of money. All these cameras, so close yet so far.1 point

I think that too, but I suspect Panasonic decided that it was more important to launch the S9 now (to some extent to ride the X100VI wave and pick up some sales from people who can't wait for one of those). The 26mm pancake feels to me like a 'we gotta have a really small lens, in a hurry, to sell or give away with the S9' rushed product - otherwise why would it be manual focus, given the target market? If it had been maybe F4 with AF, even if that meant it was a bit longer, I suspect the S9 launch YT videos might have been generally much more positive.1 point

I think we are probably a few days away from discovering that S9-gate was really GH7-gate all along. At the time the rest of them started gathering in Osaka, I commented that there were quite a few MFT oriented channels there. My speculation about that was that the S9 was being introduced as the “new” MFT camera to transition to FF. When the “there was another camera they were going to launch but didn’t” stuff started up and then Undone wet his pants, I felt that I was wrong about that speculation and that they were sent back from the trip with an MFT camera as well to “review” when they got home. The extent of his (likely bridge burning) reaction seemed too much for missing out on an interesting but not ground breaking camera so I think it’s because he’s missed out on a much more significant release. With his response to the GH6 he could probably have expected to get a lot of views for his take on the GH7. Incidentally, there is another Canadian YouTuber that received the exact same treatment in not being invited to Japan for the S9 (which he expected because he turns down all such trips) but, significantly, for the first time not being sent the camera. Im sure he has his own views about that, erm, conspiracy. So, Undone was not as singled out for “special” treatment from Panasonic as widely believed.1 point
