I tested a bunch of modes and was really impressed that the only times it cropped in were when you explicitly told it to do so (the ETC and 2x and 4x digital zooms) and everything else was downsampled. That even included things like the FHD 60p mode in 2x digital crop - it was still downsampling from an area half the width of the sensor ( ~2.5K ) down to the FHD output resolution. It made all the modes I tested really high quality. I still read about the hodge-podge of gotchas and limitations on current generations of cameras and just shake my head.3 points

I confirm, my GH5 has Open gate 3,3K downsampled 60 fps. Even my GH6 and G9II have not Open Gate 60fps. The GH5 is still the best Panasonic m43 cameras for a lot of things, including detail rendering and Open Gate 60fps.3 points

Sun is out today. A known German saying goes: Sonne lacht, Blende acht. 28mm on S35 at f8. Means I can take my LX10 out and shoot some lovely 4K at f2.8 for same Dof and great look. High shutter galore ahead.:)3 points

Just educated guesswork, but that might be because it's using the full sensor area (instead of a vertically cropped area in UHD and C4K), so the IBIS can't move the sensor as far while staying within the image circle of the lens. Assuming the horizontal field-of-view is the same in 5.7K, UHD and C4K, the corners of the frame will be closer to the image circle limit in 4:3 than in 16:9 or 17:9.2 points

I agree and most of influencers never speak about these things, they are very enthusiastic about the GH6 4K 120fps or 5,7K 60fps but at no point during their reviews they speak about the drop in detail quality or the lack of Open Gate 60fps compared to the GH5, in the same way they never speak about the drop in IBIS performance when using 5,7K.2 points

While the S5II H264/265 uses temporal noise reduction as opposed to the S5 and make the fine details worse especially in 4K/C4K. I think the GH6 being softer than the GH5 in 4K/C4K is mostly due to a more agressive IDP (Intelligent detail processing). In order to reduce moiré, it smooth fine details (making the image more organic for some people) but also reducing the level of fine details when you crop a bit. So if you want to get the same impression of sharpness of the GH5 and tries to add digital sharpening in post on the GH6 (this is rarely a good thing to do but it can help to see the differences of details between different cameras/recording mode by highlighting them), the image becomes very bad with some apparent details looking oversharpened and some very fines details looking smoothed out. The GH5 just keeps more details and even if this camera still use a good amount of sharpening in 4K, this sharpening looks less rough. In 5,7K, the GH6 is much better (and closer than the GH5), fine details looks less rough than 4K/C4K, however the IBIS takes a good hit when walking producing more "jumps". Open gate is very similar to 5,7K on the GH6, maybe the fine details are slightly better when there are not a lot of motion, but the rendering is very similar. However the GH5 in Open Gate is the best I've seen, the level of sharpening is almost the same than a raw picture file, making the image the best you can get on from a Panasonic m43 camera about detail rendering and in my opinion this mode is much better than any mode inside the GH6 or the G9II, even in Prores. Of course I don't speak about DR and colors, for me the GH6 has the best colors of any Panasonic cameras.2 points

Hmmm 🤔 I’d like to use my Time Machine to go visit that age for sure and see someone like George Melieres at work, but as a hybrid event photographer working in 2024, I suspect my tools of choice have a few advantages over his… 16fps stop motion is not something my clients book me for 😂2 points

Ace Pro 8K has remarkable low light performance BTW. The bigger is not necessarily all the time the best : ) Since GH6 as for instance, MFT is nowadays the only format of this camera industry segment I am aware to let it go with PRORES RAW 4K 120fps external recording under HDMI 2.1 when others don't even allow raw @ such high frame rate internally... ; )1 point

Some event shooters might want it, but waaaaaay too slow mo for my tastes and I have been increasingly moving away from any form of slow mo at all. It can have it’s place but I’m personally tired of it.1 point

Probably… Plenty of cameras only have one card slot. There was no back up at all when we shot film (other than it was maybe 10 rolls of film over a day). I just stuck my current S1H rig including VND and Spider Holster plate and it came in at 1.75kg so slightly higher than I thought. S9 with cage and same lens will be just under 1kg so quite a big difference and the size/weight combo above a certain output quality (that the S1H and S9 are both well above) is a priority for me. Plus the better AF. Convinced myself, I’ll at least give the S9 a chance.1 point

I decided on the S9 with Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 as my compact ‘compromise’, but the GH7 with the pairing of 10-25 (indoors) and 25-50 (outdoors) would actually be a preference other than for 2 factors. Size & weight of each combo, the M4/3 option being approx 1.5x the size & weight, plus having to carry that option lens and Cost. The S9 I think is €1600 and I already have the lens but 3 M4/3 items, even used for the lenses, would run me pushing €6k. Somewhat reluctantly, I had to say no to that option, but hey ho. Now slightly on the fence whether I should even change my S1H for the S9… The S9 is the smaller & lighter option paired with the Sigma 28-70, but the single card slot is a slight concern. Only ever had one SD card have a problem and that was at least 12+ years, but it’s something every pro needs to consider. The S1H package compared with the GH7 + 10-25 or 25-50 is around the same weight, but not as wide or as long, but flipping to S35 mode takes it up to an equivalent 105mm. The other factor to consider is the S1H is bullet proof, I have 4 batteries for it. And I own it, so costs exactly €0 🤑 But all that said and done, if it wasn’t for the financial part of the equation, O think I’d go for the GH7 and that pair of fast zooms.1 point

50/60p versus 96/100/120fps are two different worlds apart indeed ; ) Pity that Z8 8K 50p/60p is not reliable 'cause of overheating or as of now, I wouldn't be checking glass for E mount very likely... ;- )1 point

from another thread Another little gem form Filippo Chiesa. Reading the comments: Quote Excellent work. Congratulations. Given the absence of camera movement, I ask you why you decided to use the light and handy GH5s despite having the EVA1, which would have at least benefited from a native iso of 2500. His reply: Quote Thank you Giancarmine! I didn't go above 800 ISO in this video. I own the VariCam LT which even has a dual ISO system at 800 ISO and 5000 ISO. The GH5S also has a dual ISO system at 400 ISO and 2500 ISO (almost the same as the EVA1). I didn't use the GH5S for the handling, but because it is a big, small MDP that has a beautiful sensor and has colour science from a higher-ranking camera. They deliberately limited it to 12 stops of DR because, unlike its sister GH5, it would be able to go up to 14 stops of DR. The GH5 was already a beautiful and affordable camera; with the GH5S they have outdone themselves (and I am not referring to ISO). I am happy because, in so many situations, I will be able to use the GH5S alongside my VariCam (as a B camera) without the worry of the usual compromises. seems gh5s is the best? if don't mind the gh7' af, which one has the best video iq, gh5, gh5ii,gh5s,gh6,gh7?1 point

How odd, I just checked and the GH5 3.3K 4:3 mode and it's the same horizontal FOV as the 16:9 modes, so downsampled not cropped.1 point

Just fired up my GH5 and it has 3328x2496 at 59.94p, so I'd be surprised if the GH5ii, GH5S, GH6 and GH7 didn't have at least one >30p mode in open gate..1 point

The GH5II has been tested for displaying the best detail rendering of the whole bunch from what I read, high resolving but gentle. @Beritar Thank you for testing the Gh6 and S-line cameras and for sharing. So far GH5II looks even more interesting to me. None of the bunch does open gate 60p, right?1 point

Cinema cameras are better than mirrorless cameras?
zlfan reacted to Mr. Freeze for a topic
Especially since I´ve saw a couple of demos not only by him but by other YT-Creators, and the results were questionable at best. Sure, the premise sounds great, but the results were soft, bloomy and weakened the quality of the footage so much, that most of it would be unusable for the stuff I make. I do like my vintage lenses and they have character, but some of these adapters weaken the imagequality to an extend, that even vintage lenses don´t do. this as well as the price is a strange item to push towards the audience, He is usually on the more rational side, when it comes to endorsements with certain companies and their items/devices.1 point -

I am super sure that you are not Ebrahim Saalawi. He never talked like you at all. People are familiar with their private parts- pussy and dick are common words, no need to try to put them into a supposely hurting context. Narcist, you really believe that? I have a hard time to believe that you really think that, but that you are rather using it as a cussing word. Mofo is a pretty aggressive term. Let's calm down again, I'd like to suggest. About the GH7, if it doesn't display the temporal noise reduction of the GH6, which @Beritarhas been exposing to us, then it could be a winner for me. I am still curious to test the GH5 II for its higher end way of rendering detail, highly resolving but without artificial sharpness. Has anyone discovered any news regarding the rendering of textures? Also, I still have some questionmarks regarding highlights and rolloff.1 point

Look at your statements and compare to what you would like to consider an insult from others. Sanveer might not like it getting mixed up with me though.:) @sanveer I am a pretty nice person btw.:) You don't need to prove anything. I believe you having a youtube channel. Even if you would stop your youtube business, your opinions relevance does not depend on that. They either speak to people or maybe sometimes they don't. Very simple. Why not stopping getting angry and insulting people. Have a good laugh about one of forums running gags and say something like to me f.i.: "Ebrahim who? I am Zlfan, a unique cat but no copycat. I might be all wordy but still spitting out some spiffy stuff." And you are. Cool Oly OM1 thread btw. All good.1 point

1st shooting session last night. What a memorable show! The Waterboys version 2024 is a terrific must. Their performance on stage is one of the best gigs I've ever seen in my life... To hear this Scottish-Irish band playing hits such as (let's only mention a couple!) 'AND A BANG ON THE EAR' or 'THE PAN WITHIN' live is simply thrilling... literally. One of the best bands ever. Mike Scott is a star of the history of folk rock in the body of a man. The older the best, as I had opportunity to personally let him know he is like Port wine, today : ) BTW I have a chance to offer to this community... To those who will be interested to locally shoot their concerts, we can launch a footage archive of their performances in the coming years. PM me as you wish on this purpose of mine launched here now. I think these boards should be more mutual cooperation of this gang's gigs than has rarely been TBH :- ) And I will tell you the only beef against the usual mirrorless toys ; ) Bulky and weight. Light glass without cumbersome adapters is a bless... ; ) Osmo Pocket : D saved us a lot of times! Incredible tool! All the rest has no challenge. Monitor, menus and BRAW have no competitor and are what a cinema camera should be.1 point

As 2/3" sensors cameras like the F23 were mentioned. It is possible to optically adapted B4 lens with a B4 to PL mount adapter like the Abakus 321 adapter to cover the super 16 sensor crop 4k mode of GH5, GH6, GH7 (you would use a PL to m4/3 to mount it on the GH). You could also shoot on a number of Blackmagic cameras with a Blackmagic B4 Optical Adapter... there was a company who was using the optics of the Blackmagic B4 mount as the optics of their B4 to m4/3 adapter. Or you could make one of your own out of the Blackmagic B4 mount a m4/3 adapter and spacers and step rings and drill press and screws, nut and washers are required. The thing about 2/3 zoom lenses is because of the typical 10x to 12x zoom range you can have a dramatic depth of field decrease when zooming in with a constant aperture B4 lens. The following video has a mix of a Broadcast zoom lens, Sony full frame and Canon aps-c shots. All of the slow motion and zooming is via a B4 broadcast zoom lens (I don't think I had the 2x internal extender engaged on the B4 lens on the USRA 12k in Super 16 crop mode.) Sometimes you can see the vignetting, which I chose over less light as the 240fps really cuts the available light... and the 2x extender would have cut it in half again. Thanks! Mark1 point

Best practice to setting the white balance?

You can. But you need to do it in linear color space for accurate results. Shoot a clip in a log format, download Da Vinci Resolve, and try it out!1 point -
