  1. I'm continually amazed at how much energy goes into pixel peeing at 4K or higher, and yet the high-end productions deliberately blur un-sharpen the footage. Compare that video with the reference footage from real projects and the difference is obvious. The visibility of 1080p vs 4K vs 6K is a debate that won't ever die, but the visibility of 6K 4:4:4 vs 6K 4:2:0 will be absolutely zero once it's been put onto a 4K timeline, un-sharpened to an aesthetically pleasing amount, exported and uploaded to a streaming service, and then heavily processed and brutally compressed before streaming to the end user. Unless people are literally doing green-screen work or VFX, putting money into lens sharpness or 6K+ resolutions is just paying to look less high-end, not more.

    Panasonic GH7

Joking aside, it will get really interesting if (and when) Pana introduces an ARRI-certified LUT in the next S1II or S2.

  3. Well I own precisely zero fast lenses as in primes such as 1.4 or 1.8’s and moved exclusively to zooms recently. I prefer primes, but the reality for my work, is I tried juggling them for far too long but the simple reality was a typical zoom covers at least 3 prime focal lengths with simple rotations. OK, other than a few exotics such as Canon’s RF 28-70 f2 monster, faster than f2.8 zooms do not exist and I am over using any lens above 1kg and most of my zooms are ball park 500g or under. AI could certainly adjust DOF to be even shallower, but you know what? I am also over ultra shallow DOF and f2.8 is just fine thanks!

    Panasonic GH7

Another GH7 + LogC and ARRI discussion.. TLDR; Brady used the combo on two narrative projects, they matched up nicely in post (but not perfectly), and he sees it as a great option for a B-cam to an Alexa if you didn't have the budget for two Alexas. There's some side-by-sides in the video, including graded to match and also not.

  5. z6 iii's achilles' heel is ibis. otherwise, I probably will pull the trigger, as it has 6k raw 6p, 20 fps for 1000 frames, z-mount shortest flange distance. af seems good.

  6. Even with the addition of PDAF in the S5II/X/S9, Panasonic FF C-AF is not what anyone should describe as 'sticky'. The S5 is even worse unfortunately. I don't think you can get much out of it in that regard, but otherwise it is a good camera. Panasonic is near/at the bottom of the pile of continuous autofocus, tracking moving objects (same as Fuji?). Only exception would be G9 and now G7, but I'd imagine OM still does better there. Sony, Canon and Nikon can sell you cameras for that.

  9. I agree, even it will maybe harder to make this AI shallow depth of field for videos. But the lenses I like the most are not the ones with the deeper bokeh. I love the Leica 35mm F2 APO Summicron SL or the PL 25-50mm f1.7. Not because of their deep bokeh but because of their rendering, the way how the light convert on the point of focus, the highlights/shadows transitions and contrast. I think it will be harder to mimic the look of some lenses than adding some blur to mimic deep bokeh.

  10. F2 is where the magic rendering starts for me, but no matter what look you are going for be it shallow or deep DOF, AI will be able to apply it all. To anything with a small sensor. Much harder to get rid of a shallow depth of field baked in by the optic, than to take a deep depth of field and make it shallower with AI!

  11. And honestly f2.8 is about the shallowest depth of field you could want for most standard work

Wide end of the Panasonic 20-60mm kit lens on an S5ii capturing some people so desperate to avoid the outlandish parking charges at British seaside town that they've decided to parachute in.

  13. I would like to add, pretty models filmed in an uninspired way make any camera look dull.😊 @Emanuel

  14. To me, reports of no overheating no less but price places it at the Z8 range, it's pricey for now IMO. It will come to the territory of $2K-2.5K soon, though... Then it will become harder to not buy it. I've just purchased the BMCC6K-FF new for €1444.54... Pretty neat and impossible to miss it! ;- )

  15. Same here. With better IBIS, I would have pulled the trigger immediatly. The in camera Proresraw, which mean almost zero noise reduction and sharpening along with the 6K 60fps are really tempting.

  16. The maker got some more StarlightEye boards in stock and I ordered one. It showed up today and I've been... sort of successful, at best, at actually getting it working. I just asked on the Discord for some pointers on what I might have done wrong. I was at least able to get a picture from my C and D mount lenses that was cut off on the edge of the screen, but that was still kind of exciting. Assuming the people on Discord can tell me what terrible mistake I made, the next step will be to design some sort of minimal body around a V-mount plate with a USB-PD output (conveniently a small V mount plate is close to the same size as the Pi 5). Using a little 50Wh mini-v-mount, I could have a tiny little camera with teensy lenses that will last all day! Could be a lot of fun!

  17. I'd love to test it out on s5iix, be interesting to compare it to the emotive color lut as well.

  18. Maybe the most accurate line produced in these boards for ages about anything you can hear directly to both this craft and technology related :- )

  19. 1st shooting session last night. What a memorable show! The Waterboys version 2024 is a terrific must. Their performance on stage is one of the best gigs I've ever seen in my life... To hear this Scottish-Irish band playing hits such as (let's only mention a couple!) 'AND A BANG ON THE EAR' or 'THE PAN WITHIN' live is simply thrilling... literally. One of the best bands ever. Mike Scott is a star of the history of folk rock in the body of a man. The older the best, as I had opportunity to personally let him know he is like Port wine, today : ) BTW I have a chance to offer to this community... To those who will be interested to locally shoot their concerts, we can launch a footage archive of their performances in the coming years. PM me as you wish on this purpose of mine launched here now. I think these boards should be more mutual cooperation of this gang's gigs than has rarely been TBH :- ) And I will tell you the only beef against the usual mirrorless toys ; ) Bulky and weight. Light glass without cumbersome adapters is a bless... ; ) Osmo Pocket : D saved us a lot of times! Incredible tool! All the rest has no challenge. Monitor, menus and BRAW have no competitor and are what a cinema camera should be.

  20. Blackmagic Design is still today what RED was not completely able to deliver at least to the wildest expectations, the true indie cinema camera is theirs. RED is nowadays mainstream and a guess, since Nikon has bought the brand. Better than any unknown hands, IMO Jim and Jarred honoured their commitment with this industry. Made a maninstream camera company anyway. And the purchase by Nikon only proves it. Hope Blackmagic will stand at our side though. Reason why I usually tend to buy any great sale signed by them. On the due course, again as of now when I write these lines. I even believe every indie should have no reason to not have one if not a few of their unique offer. Who else? No one else. - EAG :- )
