  1. I like and use their cameras, but I think unless OMDS gets its R&D really motoring I suspect it won't be around long-term in it's current form - re-cycling older camera tech and doing mostly cosmetic makeovers of existing lenses isn't really a sustainable strategy if you're competing with giant corporations like Sony and Canon. It's been 3 1/2 years since JIP took 95% ownership of OMDS and we've had one new camera with 'new tech' inside it - the OM-1 (which was mostly developed before the takeover), a 'mark 2' warm-over of that, and one re-packaging of the E-M1 iii tech into a smaller body - the OM-5. This seems slow progress for a company with 1850 employees and a 'Share Capital and Capital Surplus' of 41.7 billion yen (USD 258 million) in March 2023. As for Panasonic M43 - it might surprise us, but I'm not hoping for much more than maybe a GX9 equivalent based on the S9 body with an EVF added. The G9ii/GH7 sensor would be great, but it might push the price too high - on the other hand that would be re-using the sensor and tech from those cameras so maybe not...

  2. Good day to all! Very hot in Greece guys!! So I flew to Thassos isand with Tenere 700 & a7iv & gopro 12 for 2 days and I stayed on its beaches, close to the sea that is. I stayed for the first time in 2 very nice hotels and I noticed that there were no Greeks at all, like tourists that is. I was very impressed by this event and I say a few words at the end of the video. Nevertheless, it was very nice! Enjoy the video! (a7iv shoots are handle hand)

  3. $500 is a lot of money. ---- I think the hype for this is (as usual) overblown BUT there aren't a ton of options at this price point, making it enticing for a very specific audience. I do feel as though we are moving backwards and heading towards Canon cripple hammer territory taking things like IBIS away (not that Sony IBIS is very good to begin with.) What I really wish Lumix would take from this release is THE POWER ZOOM. GIVE US SOME, PLZ.

  4. I don’t know about ‘always’ because 5 years vs 50 years vs 5000 years… But for the foreseeable future as in our lifespans, changes because there is always change, but probably not to the extent that some think. I believe this to be the case because although ‘progress’ continues to accelerate, there is only so much we can take, ie, it cannot simply increase exponentially. And then there is retro/analogue or whatever we wish to call it, but even that gets updated because to some, ‘retro’ is stuff from just a few years back which others of us, might think of as not far off being current. So AI I think will continue to play a part and increasingly so, but at the same time, I don’t think the sky is falling in. Well not completely. Or at least for some time yet… Please not if there is a god, until I’m done. Thanks. If you exist and are listening/read comments on this forum. And if you truly are omnipotent, you surely do? Or have someone do? Because you must because just reading that volume of shit on YouTube comments must take up a heck of an amount of time. Appreciate it.

  6. I would easily take MFT and this GH7 for sure straight to IBIS as replacement of the gimbal when a light setup is crucial. Other than that, I think there is some misinformation. And bias. As far as the circles of confusion really matter to give a specific look. And people actually tend to ignore it...

    Let's talk about filters?

this guy used pro mist 1/8 on his s5iix and penny 24-70 f2.8. image quality is pretty good. actually, I compare this video to my c300 og video. if doing pixel peeping, yes, there is more details in s5iix. but if looking at the whole picture, the final footage on YouTube (YouTube compression may affect) is comparable on my laptop screen. considering most of the YouTube viewers are using their phones and iPads, I doubt if viewers will see the difference. I think human eyes have certain threshold on image quality parameters, like resolution, contrast, dr, etc.

  8. Yes. And by which time no one will be watching films made by someone else anyway… “AI, make me a Western/Romance/Horror… “ No camera needed. (Goodness, I hope not!)

  9. I’ve been playing with the Telnet on my NX1 hack and it shows up in terminal as Samsung Linux. I can navigate the whole system hierarchy I can use vim and I can open files and create them all using Unix like commands. It’s amazing. Gotta actually get a VM of Ubuntu running to play with the source code I just downloaded. I am trying to get the NX 1 to work as a webcam using Live Camera, CamTwist and OBS but though it is recognized I’m Camera Live it just shows a blank/black screen In CamTwist and OBS. Not sure what the solution is but im trying everything I can. This camera still kicks ass!!!

    Let's talk about filters?

That’s me, but actually it’s considered. For video, because my cameras do not have an OLPF (except the S1H which is being replaced) I find that a 1/8th mist is quite subtle and takes off that digital edge whilst helping reduce or eliminate any moiré. For stills, the 1/8th Bloom Golds just reduce the overall contrast a little and again take off that digital edge and make the resulting files that little bit more ‘filmic’ SOOC. For me, it’s about doing more in camera in order that I have the best/a better and consistent starting point when it comes to editing. Could you spot it? Probably in lower light shots when there are visible light sources such as lamps or strings of lights etc, because there is some inevitable (and wanted) diffusion going on. But only nerds like us would spot it and my clients would simply ‘like the images’ but not be able to technically break down as to why.

    Let's talk about filters?

I think the missing part that no-one seems to mention is how they're used. Pros will choose which filter, at which strength, if any, is used for each camera angle and each shot. It will be tailored to the exact contents of that composition, including the actor/actress who is in the shot. It was common back in the day for big-name actresses to include a clause in their contract that all shots that they appear in must have a particular filter used. Amateurs buy one, slap it on their lens, and never take it off. There's a reason that amateur footage looks amateurish. Probably the biggest giveaway is razor sharp footage with diffusion on it.

    Let's talk about filters?

Another type of filter that gets used frequently in cinema is ultracon filters. The name suggests that they increase contrast, but in fact it's the reverse. They don't cause halation or soften the image in any way, they just distribute more of the ambient lighting toward the shadows, reducing contrast. They come in a variety of strengths; 1 is subtle; 2 is more noticeable, but they go all the way up to 6 I believe. I have #2 and got it specifically to tame the high contrast of the Sigma 18-35 when shot outdoors, where it can produce very ugly footage. I have an OLPF on my cameras that softens the image a bit already, so I'd rather not soften it further. I found a brief demo of this filter at #1 strength on the Sigma 18-35 here: The only drawback to these filters is that a very bright light source, such as sunlight reflected off water, can wash out the image and make it milky.

  15. I did the same, but in the opposite. I took a GH6 on holiday. Why? I care about the actual files I create. I don't want to look back on them and say "I wish I had taken my camera". I don't see that feeling going away anytime soon either. Sure, phones are getting better and in a pinch, why not? But when I can, I'll take the camera for its quality, better shooting experience and its authenticity (no AI crap going on that I have NO control over), not to mention I think I look like a douchebag when I use my phone.
