    Who here loves Pancakes?

Love the EF 40mm f2.8 pancake. It lives on my R5C for basic run n gun and gimbal stuff.

  2. The S1H Mark II, and the other new S1 cameras should be here by now. Interestingly the Leica SL3 has arrived already. This is a camera that is engineered by Panasonic with Leica, and very much Panasonic in terms of electronics and firmware. The S1R Mark II has not come along with it. Instead Panasonic have given us two lower-end cameras, the S5 Mark II and S9. EOSHD looks at what's going on in Osaka. 3. Isn't it time we saw the writing on the wall and got rid of our trad. optics and full frame sensors? https://www.eoshd.com/news/the-future-of-cameras-is-not-full-frame/ I really do believe it is outdated. It isn't needed to have such a large sensor or physically heavy big lenses any more. The physical side of the camera and the advanced controls need to stay. So how about we merge mirrorless with the smartphone camera world, at a very high level? And we are the perfect people for the camera industry to consult on this... Come on Japan let's work together and make it happen.

Very true... : ) I have found those APS-C format 16mm & 20mm f/2.8 pancake native lenses both interesting options to also take advantage on Clear Image Zoom/crop modes on Sony FF side too, though. People are used to criticize the optical performance in the corners but character and form factor are no less priceless aspects to consider especially when handling motion.

  6. Love them. Not enough good ones around for full frame though.

  7. I think 8K depends on whether they do an S1R/S1H type split, or just go for a single unified high-end model that is both high-res enough for the photogs (40+MP), which would kinda inevitably mean 8K for video; but also reads out and processes fast enough to keep the video people placated, if not happy. I think this route would mean keeping the mechanical shutter which might preclude internal ND. I don't really see this route working out because the stills performance probably still wouldn't be competitive enough to attract Can/Sony/Nik shooters, and video improvements would really be iterative/incremental. If they kept them split I would also much prefer the video model's res to stay around 24MP/6K... just crank up the other specs. Like what we've seen with the Z6III, just hopefully without its DR and noise issues. Drop the mechanical shutter and put in the internal ND everyone has been waiting for. With all the other current features brought over (open gate, 32bit float, combo screen, IBIS improvements, AF, etc), usability and practicality go through the roof and nobody in this market gives a damn that it doesn't do 8K, and it would probably be the next 5DII, GH2, GH5 type landmark camera, at least if the price stays under $4K. Really it all comes down to what sensors are available. If Sony can't/won't give them a decent starting point then the S line might be done for.

Yeah I bought the Canon 28mm cause I really miss the 20mm and 14mm pancake back in the day with m43, 22mm with M50/M6ii, 24mm with 200D and surprisingly there is no AF pancake for Sony FF system. R8 with 28mm is slightly more depth than my X100Vi Limited.

  9. The Light camera that was hyped a decade ago would have really hit this spot. Too bad that never panned out. I used to shoot a Canon EOS 1Ds III with assorted L glass when traveling... now I am already frustrated by carrying a X-H2s with 2 lenses around on trips. Can't wait for the same results with smaller/less gear.

    Is DR that important?

Personally, I’d say that a lot of ‘TV’ productions are simply just feature films on steroids ie far too long for anyone to watch in a single viewing (well for normal people anyway) so are broken down into 45 minute episodes. In fact I’d go as far and say some are more cinematic than many of their big screen siblings. And then there is this nostalgia for older movies. My teenage years were the 80’s so those are the most memorable and iconic movies for me, but other than a few exceptions (mostly Spielberg), they look like shit next to even your average Netflix series today. I guess it’s like anything and there is good and bad… There is old stuff that looks great that will never be and probably cannot be, ever replicated due to the use of the tools of the time and then there is stuff today that was not possible even just a few years back. Something I have never prescribed to is the rose-tinted spectacle that everything was just better in the good old days. However, give me back the 80’s 😜

  11. Makes sense and I am sure that is where we are heading and could be heading there a lot quicker other than for the fact that most people and most companies are possibly too conservative? Anything like this would put a massive number of people (and businesses) out of work so there would be obvious resistance. However, those factors aside, I’d love to get rid of a bag of lenses from this perspective. It’s a direction I have sort of taken, especially in the stills side of my work with a bigger sensor in a smaller body and cropping, eliminating the need for at least what would have been my previous longest lens. Plus compact powerful lights. It’s not AI as such, but I have moved as much as I can on more of the physical side of ‘miniaturization’ as I realistically can. A single camera/lens combo would be very welcome! If I could also be one of those flown all expenses paid to try out the AR-2030X in a few years time, I’d be up for it.

    Panasonic GH7

GH7 always looks noticeably different in these tests. I'd imagine the white balance isn't the same as an Alexa's. Maybe it's also IR filtration.

  13. Yes over 4 and 5 years, that points to something quite wrong doesn't it? Is Pana soft quitting on us? I sincerely hope not. Also you will notice the SL3 has also quite an old off the shelf Sony sensor, same as A7R IV and Sigma Fp-L. Certainly nothing as cutting edge as a Z6 or A1. Where's the L2 partnership going exactly? Into the old parts bins for cheap?
