Watched on 16" MacBook full screen and my takeaway/opinion was: Best detail 4k 25p = Canon Best detail 4k 50p = Canon Best low light 4k = Sony Best colour = Lumix (which surprised me) Best DR = Lumix and worst DR = Canon Best image of the lot, Lumix 6k 25p, especially in open gate. Does the 6k mode reduce IBIS ability slightly? Maybe but as Lumix already has arguably the best IBIS as a starting point, it's probably comparable at least with Canon and better than the Sony which most reckon is still a bit behind. Lumix 6k 25p open gate for the win then. I prefer 30p for various reasons.4 points

S1HII Late 2024

Panasonic GH7 sensor = On-semi? (ARRI Alexa 35 = On-semi) Perhaps there's a move to On-semi away from Sony for the full frame cameras. That's the good excuse for the delay. The bad excuse for the delay is that they ain't coming at all... But until the white smoke rises from the Tuscany villa, who am I to say? š2 points -
1080 > 4k
MrSMW and one other reacted to Benjamin Hilton for a topic
Yeah in a way. Netflix has that standard, but outside of that I have yet to see people really care. Don't get me wrong, I prefer 4k all around, all my deliveries are in 4k for our clients. But that being said, I don't think I would have a single person I work with even notice if I delivered in 1080p. The same way none of our clients would notice if I didn't do that extra hour of fine tuning on the color grade an so forth. At the end of the day I guess I do it for myself not for them.2 points -
Gordon's Canon R6 II vs Lumix S5 II vs Sony A7 IV video quality comparison
IronFilm and one other reacted to John Matthews for a topic
The point of IBIS cannot be understated. How many people are there who practically never use a tripod? I bet the answer would be very high. Also, what surprised me the most was the 1080p, which is what I really care about. I think the S5ii bettered the others at 25fps in FF. I'm fairly certain it's a 6k-ish downsampled image, making it the best of the bunch, but they're all fairly good at 200%.2 points -
Hopefully with the next round of LUMIX pro flagship cameras we will get an OLPF filter choice again and we will hit a sweet spot between the older S cameras IQ and the newer S5ii cameras features.2 points

Gordon's Canon R6 II vs Lumix S5 II vs Sony A7 IV video quality comparison

Interesting test but I own a lot of camera and there is much more to said about image quality. The way the details are altered with noise reduction even at low ISO is also important. To my eyes, my S5II has a very bad rendering in 4K, even more with the standard profiles. Yes 6K and 6K Open Gate are better, but the image still looks more processed than on my S1. And another issue with Open Gate (and even 6K) is the IBIS which is worse (mainly while walking) than in 4K.2 points -

Cupboards clearout (DVX100, DX1, old camcorders topic)
Andrew Reid reacted to PannySVHS for a topic
This is THE legendary DV camera of 90ies Germany imo. It had the nick name "queen of the night", not in English though but in German, of course. To me one of the most attractive and fun camera designs. No progressive mode but 3CCD color magic and beautiful color palette, no fire wire unfortunately. Using a dv player or another camera is a workaround. Congrats to your purchase, Andrew. A friend of mine is still owning one. Some of the footage in this video, mostly leaves and flares were shot with it. I had posted this video before:)1 point -
Shhh, donāt want to hear thatā¦ Actually, it would not be the end of the world, at least my world, if they never made another FF camera because the S5ii does all I need it to do and arguably, could see out my working life with them. I think itās unlikely though. The S5ii has been and is pretty popular, at least on MeTubeā¦but not sure if that has any relation to actual sales, but you mostly only come across praise. So I would be highly surprised if there wasnāt and Lumix are not like Sony and bang out new cameras every year and how long did it take for both the GH6 and GH7 to appear?! I have faith something FF is coming, but slightly surprised no 1/2 price SL3 which is slightly concerningā¦ I donāt āneedā a S2H or an S2R, but might want oneā¦or both, and the world will just be a better place with them in it regardless š«1 point

Cupboards clearout (DVX100, DX1, old camcorders topic)

7-ish years BEFORE the DVX100 came the DX1, a little gem from Panasonic in 1996! The form factor is pretty nifty - it has a director's viewfinder thing going on. Known as NV-DX1 or EZ1 Digital 6 camera depending on region, this was Panasonic's first prosumer MiniDV camcorder which was I think up against the Sony VX series cameras like the VX1 and later VX1000. It has a very large articulated viewfinder and being a 3CCD camera, pretty nice colours. Amazingly the tape mech still seems to work without a hitch. Picked it up in Berlin yesterday so will be fun to do some shoots to see how it compares to some of the later MiniDV cams.1 point -
Lumix and...Sony?

Well this last weekend 3 day job was the first time I actually got to use every bit of kit as intended and it passed. With flying colours. And it was not without it's challenges at times including some rain and a fair bit of wind... The S5ii's are for me right now, just perfect and will be for the foreseeable future. The A7RV for stills, other than the occasional need to drop out and reinsert the battery, approx 1 in every 500 actuations (I switch off in-between use a couple of hundred times per shoot at least) really only has one niggle and that is even with the Smallrig baseplate, still isn't quite as good in the hand as I'd like (but waaaaaay better than the Nikon Zf) so added a Peak Design clutch strap for the next couple of jobs that I think will fix that, but if not, I might consider a battery grip because with the 20-40, it's no issue, 28-75, slight issue and it's really only with the 70-180, it becomes a bit annoying. I have nothing now I feel any NEED to change and won't for the rest of the year, but for the future/2025... A 'S2H' might be of interest to replace one of the S5ii's as my run & gun unit, but not sure it will bring anything to the party...but we'll see. It might be an option just for interest and to replace spiritually, my now dearly departed S1H. A 'S2R' might be of interest to replace the A7RV, but struggling a bit with lenses for that to happen. The Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 would need to spawn a longer sibling...so again, we'll see, but 2 things that would need to happen there. Pondering either a fast prime around 35mm'ish for low light photography or possibly a sidekick for the A7RV to weld the 20-40mm to and reserve this unit purely for 'after dark' duty which can be 20-25% of any job. It would also act as a stills back up (at all other parts of any job) to the A7RV as currently, I'd have to pull one of the S5ii's off video duty to fill that role of called upon. Contenders for this backup/night role are: ZV-E1 (12mp stills does not faze me in the slightest but it's AF ability in low light does a bit) A7Cii (AF ability in low light again, concerns me slightly compared with say the Zf...) Nikon Zf which was fantastic in low light, but is a bit of a chonky boy. Hmmm, fact cheap f1.8 lens sub 500 vs second used body around 1.5-2k... It's the only area where the A7RV could be improved upon. It's not bad, fairly decent even, but I know it could be better and probably won't happen this year as I'm getting close to season end and don't really need to test anything, but ideally would like to do something for 2025. But then there is a rumoured Sony 24/28-105mm f2.8 coming soon and that could throw a spanner in the works and push me towards a second body and lose a lens in the process. We'll see, but very happy with the hybrid set up I have now finally achieved after almost 15 years of effort in this genre. I have now merely entered the stage I shall call, 'just fannying about really', as in anything else/new now is just tinkering for tinkering sake rather than need.1 point -
1080 > 4k
zlfan reacted to Benjamin Hilton for a topic
I love 4k as a viewing format, but overall it's not that much better than good 1080p. And I do agree, for the way most people view movies, they wouldn't see a difference. If you have the option though, it is a good sweet spot IMO for delivery, especially for future proofing. Just starting out though, it's not something I would spend money on over good 1080P. I do think that 6k is probably the most practical medium for shooting in these days. I really have no desire to ever go above that unless it's a specific product I'm selling, like 8k TV wallpaper or something1 point -
I stand corrected, contrary to what people were saying SRAW seems very good, on pair to 4k Fine (oversampled) and much better than 4k 50p (line skipped), so it is not line skipped but what it is? The guy could record > 2h continuously in SRAW.... Also, 2k 200fps seems better that what I was expecting. 100fps no improvements š PS: my R5II did arrive yesterday, I will test out in the next few days and share my first impressions1 point

Maybe for YouTube and general stuff web stuff but if you are delivering in any professional capacity itās going to be 4K DCI or 4K Scope. Netflix and streaming wonāt take 1080 for anything so itās not even a conversation itās just the standard now.0 points
