  1. Fuji X-S2 or Sigma Fp-L For the most cinematic results. If you go even smaller, you have to make some compromises and go with a high-end compact camera... If you're doing that, it might be better to go with a high-end smartphone instead as the iPhone 15 Pro has an incredible codec now, and really good auxiliary lenses especially the 5x zoom.

  2. Last week I shot two ice hockey matches and a horse endurance race. Shot mostly 8k 25 and 50 RAW and some 10bit 2k 200fps. I did not have any issue with black/green screen, but I never had it in RAW. As I film the hockey matches in the same arena so same lighting and similar situations, I can confirm that AF is better than R5 and R5c and the image quality too, it is less noisy, and I find it easier to expose. The AWB I feel the R5c is better but as I mostly shot RAW it does not really matter. I'm exposing the highlight to just barely pass the last top row of the WFM and it seems to be working well in most of my scenarios. Now Canon please add a button to show and hide WFM!! Battery life in 8k 25 is about the same as the R5 and much better than the R5c. At 8k 50 I shoot around 30 min of footage with the camera on, continuously AF and IS (no standby) for around 1.5h with 1 battery and still had juice left. In 8k 50 it will eventually overheat, for the endurance race (under the sun at 25c) I did longer takes like 5-10 min each and the overheating warning was at 2 out 10. Is the only occurrence so far that the warning came out but most of my takes are below 5 min. I got scared because a couple of times the brightness of the EVF did change while shooting, the recorded video was normal with no brightness change, then I realized that I did disable auto brightness of the LCD but not for the EVF.... rookie mistake. I did a quick test at 14mm and the IBIS wobbling is much improved over the R5, where it was not usable imo... I need to do some more tests as I did only by standing still and panning (fast and slow) but no walking/running yet. I'm starting to consider replacing my beloved R5c with a second R5 II, for my usage the only two things that I would really miss from the R5c on the R5 II are: peaking during AF (less needed as the R5 II AF is better) and no overheating. The biggest improvement over the R5c is AF, battery life, DR (noise, highlights and easy to expose), 2k 240fps, c1-c3, IBIS (although I'm sure there will be occurrences that I wish it did have full locked system)

  3. I look at this and get the impression that the only reason to use iPhones instead of "real" cameras is as a marketing gimmick. iPhones are capable of good quality and all that but ergonomically, they're awkward to use. If this film was shooting with an Arri Alexa for example, I wouldn't even know about it, but I do know about it. Doing something different is a way to stand out. It'll be interesting to see the results. I hope I don't sound negative or anything. I think it's great that there are high quality devices in most people's pockets now. The hippy era dream of video technology democratizing media production has now happened. Most are using it for unimportant things but some are using it to communicate their lives to others and be part of the world of media. In the past many types people weren't allowed in to the world of media. That's over.

  4. It is so funny pixel peeping vs real world, I could care less about charts and graphs, I'm delivering footage to my clients not a chart so I would also take the C80 or C400 any day vs the R1 for long form or controlled set content. There is no way I would want a frankenrigged R1 vs the C80 or C400. For that matter, IMO the R5II has put the R1 and R3 back in their rightful places as sports cameras and taken over as the new hybrid video king. I also think the C80 is plenty good enough for most people's needs, also, the sharpness difference is so negligible that a little post sharpening would make the two look identical.

    Canon C80 coming soon

It will be interesting to see how the R1 compares with the C80 and C400. According to Canon, it is also rated to 16 stops of DR in video: https://www.newsshooter.com/2024/07/17/canon-flagship-eos-r1-announced/ The use of CFexpress Type B allows for much higher quality 6K RAW than the RAW LT found on the C80, which is also limited to 30p unlike the R1's 60p. The R1's Standard RAW is basically on par with the RAW HQ on the C400. The R1 will retail for $800 more than the C80, but that might be worth it. You lose the I/O, NDs, and cinema features (e.g., waveforms, anamorphic de-squeeze), but you gain better RAW quality, IBIS, AF, EVF, and hybrid usability.

  7. Not the word that sprang to mind when I tried to test it earlier. I tried. I really did. But it is utterly dreadful. I’m still not sure what the Menu, Set, Up & Down buttons do. Mainly because most of the time I didn’t know which, if any, button I pressed. No control via the VA. No idea about AF (that must be in the manual - that, of course, I didn’t read). I used an Olympus 12-45 Pro lens. Yes, it is fantastic in the use scenario it was designed for (controlled and repeatable lighting etc.). But for fools such as I trying to use it outside it is the quintessential nightmare. Perhaps I grow increasingly intolerant with age and podgy finger syndrome. So it’s my fault not BMs. It’s back in its box awaiting MPB…

  8. Panasonic FZ2500?? (or the even older Panasonic FZ1000) https://www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/compacts/panasonic_dmcfz2500 Or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10/LX15 or similar?? Panasonic GX850/GX800?? As all of these share Panasonic DNA it might be also easier to in a pinch have them act as a C Cam to your Panasonic S5 if you wish.

  9. I just ordered a couple of fairly inexpensive magsafe filter holders as well as the Angelbird magsafe CF adapter. At least one of the filter holders claims to be stackable so we'll see how it all works out.

  10. Does seem a bit pointless sticking such a large lens on a phone. Wonder if they used the Blackmagic camera app or the stock app on this. I've noticed no one is discussing that the iPhone 15 Pro can now shoot raw video like Android phones already do. It's only up to 1080p (2.5k and 4k are expected soon - probably on the iPhone 16), but unlike on Android phones, no transcoding is needed as the app records CDNG directly. Here's a video I did shooting in 1080p 14-bit CDNG - the crop is heavy and the app needs work but was interesting to try this out. Reminds me of the original BMPCC in a way. Once they sort out the 4k recording let's see if anyone will use this to make a film

  11. I have very mixed feelings about the OM-1. On one hand, it's a bundle of fun. On the other hand I have yet to see what the 10bit codec brings to the table over the old E-M1 II. Just doesn't seem to really up the ante for me. The other issue is that the noise is very blotchy and it tops out at 800 for clean results - after 1600 it's really pretty poor and 3200 is a bit of a shit show in 4K and fine detail has a pixel-binned or upscaled look to it, rather than it being oversampled as was the case with the E-M1 II. The E-M1 II was the GH5 sensor... And the OM-1 I am not sure what chip it has. But it ain't a GH6 that's for sure. I also find OM-LOG very iffy... It needs a lot of work to colour correct. The E-M1 II I find does 95% of what I need in the OM-1, and given it goes for so cheap, it's hard to justify the extra! Just my take anyway. And the OM-5 basically brings nothing to the table at all! E-M5 III re-issue with a small firmware update.

  12. I would go for a second hand E-M1 II over either of those. They are very cheap now and in some ways even better than the OM-1. The sensor readout is more detailed in 4K. The E-M10 III shoots 4K whereas E-M5 II shoots absolute mud. It was dodgy in video mode even for 2014 standards! If you absolutely can't justify an E-M1 II for 100 bucks more, the E-M10 III is the one to get. Canon Rp is a disaster, stay away from that for video. It feels awful to use and crops like hell.
