Canon C80 coming soon

Pixel peepers are going to pixel peep...and use their pixel peeping to justify their desires and purchases. @Kino just get whatever works for you, none of your concerns are my concerns, the R5II is the better fit for me in every way vs the R1. Also, I am as far from a pixel peeper as it gets and even I can tell in the R1 vs R5II screenshots that the R5II is at least 0.5 stops over vs the R1. And who cares about a magenta shift? All of my footage has a green shift from my vND filter, takes two seconds in post to shift it back, or you can even shift it back in camera with a custom WB tint setting; who knows, the "magenta" shift might even counter my vND's green shift which means it all works out. Also, I have no idea what highlight rolloff "problem" you are referring to, the R5II when shooting CLOG2 has some of the best highlight rolloff that I have ever seen in a mirrorless camera......but hey, if you need some sort of justification to buy the R1 then have at it. I have already shot multiple paying jobs with the R5II and no complaints so I guess my clients are also fine with what the camera can produce.2 points -

The BBC has made its sound effects archive openly available online: https://sound-effects.bbcrewind.co.uk2 points -
When I opened the link I thought the most alarming thing in the video is that how fast Jeromy is gaining weight! Then I saw a comment by a random user claiming to be former employee, was making fun of him referring to his smoking of white powder in his office, which CineD deleted. But the real sad part was the technical subject. When asked about the future, or "why people should buy your next product?" in a polite way, he had no answer but "higher frame rates"! He can't explain why external recorder is needed, in this day and age that even a $2500 camera records 6k60p raw internally. He just begs the camera makers to add even higher fps to the specs that their own outdated 14nm chip can't handle, assuming they're stuck with that node forever. Here we have a CEO that doesn't know what to do next, and is very honest about that (probably because his tech bro vibe overtakes his financial ego). The reality is that hardware part of the industry is becoming like the Hollywood part. As we now have either $100m budget movies or $500k ones, and everything between is gone, you either get the high end most expensive gear, or get the cheapest available that is good enough. Basically SmallHD vs. any hard to pronounce Chinese brand. We can't have middle ground when someone who's supposed to make money from the middle ground can't tell us why it should exist.1 point

My magnetic filter holder and Angelbird CF reader/writer showed up today. It's a bummer to have to take off the case to put on the filter holder, but there are worse things and the camera's pretty comfortable to hold with both stacked on. It could be that I finally have a decent 4K pocket camera. 😉1 point -

It sounds like you really like the R1, even to the point of obsessing about micro-differences between images which would be removed during even basic color grading. Seems like you should get one.1 point -
ATOMOS CEO interview is.. just sad!
KnightsFan reacted to eatstoomuchjam for a topic
Why should people buy any Atomos product? They shouldn't. Atomos is a terrible company who moved a while ago from selling customers a working tool and supporting it to trying to build new revenue streams from their existing customer base. The whole reason to release a "new" Ninja V model seems to have been to release the same hardware again, but with a few licenses that were an additional cost on the original NInja V (such as H.265), but that nobody in their right mind was going to buy (why would I get a Ninja V to record in the codec that my camera already uses?)... difference in price for the new monitor? Basically the cost of buying those add-ons for the original. It's also why getting the activation code for ProRes RAW for the Ninja V went from a simple basic website where you entered a serial number and it gave you an activation code - now the site forces you to register and wade through a bunch of ads (for things like add-on software licenses) before you can register it. Meanwhile, you take the Video Assist 12G out of a box, plug in your camera, and start recording BM Raw. And that's all in addition to the bad press, sexual harassment allegations, covid fuckery, etc. If Atomos are struggling, they have only themselves and their own terrible choices to blame.1 point -
Censorship at DPReview Forums?
sanveer reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Sounds like you did the right thing and that's what matters. It's a pretty big red flag when mods of a site start to protect the manufacturers at the expense of their own readers and forum users, to act as cover for defects, which is the opposite of what journalism and community are about - to expose the truth. I could understand if you set out to criticise DPReview from the get-go and not Canon - but you were criticising Canon in a constructive way and campaigning for them to fix a genuine issue, much as I did with the R5 overheating malarky. So I'm sorry you had this experience with DPReview and yes... It is a dying site. Gear Patrol at the end of the day are in the business of advertorial not journalism.1 point -
There is no clear rule over there. Moderators decide who is the trouble maker. They once removed my reply to a guy, because I judged his integrity very quickly! lol.1 point

I'll be picking mine up tomorrow. Maybe at some point, I'll plug in an external drive and see how long it can record without overheating. 🙂1 point -
We all know about Andrew's problem with the site. A damned shame. What I never thought I'd see would be censorship in DPR's forums. I've posted hundreds of times and created almost 50 threads since 2013 (lurked there since 2006, by the way). And yet, last week my post was taken down in the Canon EOS R forum for petitioning Canon HQ in Tokyo to fix a Canon R8 EVF bug through firmware. My petition was very respectful. I dotted all my eyes and said thank you at the end of my text. The problem? The R8 does this weird "micro-juddering" when focusing through the EVF at any apertura other than the brightest aperture of the lens. This happens in the DOF+Exposure option in the EVF only. I'm no expert but it seems the focus planes are moving and that creates image movement in the EVF. It's incredibly distracting and sickening. I'm sure Canon can fix this easily. My basic Nikon Z50 works fine when focusing through the EVF and displaying both aperture and exposure changes in real time. Focus is rock- solid. And yet this subject was deemed too controversial and infringing on the rules of DPR's forums. IMO it's a been a steep decline after the new administration took over (and Amazon was not exactly a gold standard in the editorial industry, btw)0 points
