  1. They must be involved in some way! Hopefully they'll be honest enough to admit that it wasn't entirely a "creative choice"?

  2. I posted about this over a week ago! 🤣 😂 😆 As the specs got leaked a while ago. But posted not to here, rather to a subreddit specifically for production sound: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProductionSound/comments/1fl0rn9/new_tascam_frav2_is_coming_a_zoom_f3_killer/ I agree with the first post from @BTM_Pix, the fact that this is able to treat TC normally (rather than the hacked up weird way TC is done with the Zoom F3, although yes, the Zoom F3 is technically "timecode capable") means the Tascam is a better idea than the Zoom F3. (although I suspect the small $100 difference in RRP means that the average buyer who doesn't even know about will end up choosing the F3 instead 😕 However I suspect within 18 months we'll see the Tascam street price getting closer to the F3's RRP) So true that many "Boom Ops" lack the necessary skills at the indie level. (in a way this is due to the extremely low value placed on the Sound Dept. Where they think the entire department could be done by just one person. And if we do get a 1st AS that it is basically a glorified PA position, not that their skill level has to be at the same level as a 1st AC or Gaffer. Honestly even getting two people who can each properly boom one person at a time is often a tall ask. That they will get it in close enough, and on axis, and with no shadows, and with no reflections, and do all of this while this one person is moving. On an indie no / low budget shoot I feel lucky if I get even one Boom Op who is competent at all of that. If they can lav people up too, then I've hit gold. Yup! That's why I just said "If they can lav people up too, then I've hit gold". And is why in the vast majority of these scenarios I will have to lav them up myself. But on bigger budget / professional film sets, where you have actually skilled people in your department, then it's the normal process for the AS (usually the 2nd AS) to be doing the lav-ing rather than the Sound Mixer. For a long time I went hard wired. But eventually I felt the audio quality sacrifice of using Lectrosonics wireless on the boom was worth it due to the practical benefits. If you've got a person dedicated for being the Mixer, not someone booming at the same time, then I don't think it's that hard for them to grasp basic gain staging. Ohhhh.... where did you see this? Wish the Tascam FR-AV2 would also let you record the 3.5mm stereo input as well as both XLR inputs. (currently it can only do one or the other, not all four inputs at once) If the new Zoom F3 mk2 could do that and does TC sensibly (not only via BT!) and does 24bit 48KHz BWAV, then I think I've found myself my next backup / supplementary / compact recorder. That's true, due to firmware updates for the OG F8 then it's almost identical to the latest F8n Pro.

  3. Why limit yourself to cinema lenses? Now you can also use this cage to make sure your phone is powered by v mount and has an external screen and shotgun mic! You can finally realize the dream of having a cinema camera in your pocket... just as long as you don't mind a heavy backpack full of accessories. https://petapixel.com/2024/09/26/moments-smartphone-supercage-has-integrated-power-mic-headphone-jacks-and-more/

Very nice…but I only buy kit for work purposes and it wouldn’t work for me in that regard even if it was 1/4 the price. Actually, at 1/4, I’d find a way…but it isn’t and won’t be in my working life time, so sadly not 😏

  5. Zoom has been pretty good with the FW updates so fingers crossed all of this competition gets them to throw the OG Zoom F3 owners a bone or two.

For almost any other camera, I'd suggest that you should post some details about the camera, etc - but in this case, I think it's perfectly valid to just yell the price. 🤣

  7. Interesting. Well, I guess depending when I need that 2nd boom setup and the release dates, both will be in the running. One thing that I do like about Tascam which I almost wrote in my original post, is that their app supports connecting to multiple devices, so you can rec/stop on a bunch of units with 1 phone. This is nice if you use any kind of plant mic or bodypack on a talent. I also think that, just judging from pics, the body design and button layout here is better than the F3. So even if Zoom adds timecode and wireless monitoring, Tascam has a decent advantage imo. Either way, competition is good for consumers.

  8. I went for a walk in the park yesterday and took a few minutes to check things out. It was about 21C here yesterday and I was by a river so the entire area was in the shade because it's down in a valley. The setup is a filter adapter that connects by Magsafe and the Angelbird CF express adapter which connects with magnets to that. I set it up on a rock and rolled 4kp120 ProRes in the Blackmagic Camera app with the 1x/24mm equiv lens. Sometime between 4 and 8 minutes, the BM app started showing a warning on the record button which seems to indicate that the camera is heating up. At 13 minutes, I got bored and stopped the recording. The phone was a bit warm to the touch. The CF Express adapter was warmer. At least for me, I don't expect that there will be a lot of times when I need to roll 120 fps for 10+ minutes. Detaching the reader from the phone would probably help with cooling. After that, I played around a bit with the phone. I really like the 5x lens (not sure if I like it enough to replace the 3x) - but I ran into a bug in the BM app where stabilization gets weird with the 5x or 0.5x lenses. It jumps around a lot. Hopefully they fix that soon.

  9. This might have been the 256GB SSD version. Mine is the 1TB version which I recall was something like 4k euro with VAT this side of the pond, or whatever that was in GBP at the time. Not sure that paying significantly more than this is wise, seeing as the batteries in most of these aren't particularly young. 🙂

  10. Ahead of the IBC, Panasonic have announced two new box cameras. The UB-50 is a full frame L mount camera and the UB-10 is an MFT camera. Its a pity the didn't call the bigger one the UB-40 as that would've given some food for the thought and possibly make RED RED Whine (ask your Grandad) . Details are scant and no idea of pricing. 11. I don't think I've seen the ZV-E1 mentioned, but I think it falls into that price range (a bit less when used, even!). Otherwise, the A7 IV is notorious for having really good dynamic range. Could be worth a look.

  13. Hi, I know this is old post, but wanted to ask if you get any signs of vignette or image degradation on the corners using a BMPCC speedbooster (0.58x) on a BMCC? I have a BMCC and I had an XL speedbooster (0.64x) but sold it. I'm looking into the BMPCC speedbooster, but I have those concerns. Thanks!
