  1. Simply hilarious... So actual... : ) This usual (un)suspect is actually more often brilliant than not ;- )

  2. Listen Marty, I will be very straightforward and friendly as always with you. 1 - Yes, I am not upset. 2 - Life is well beyond art, filmmaking, whatever. 3 - I admit people can be lot of times committed with creating beauty and all that stuff. 4 - But admit you too : ) when you have "gazillions" (as you call it : ) of concerns (let alone private/personal/family life... I brought a 94-year old aunt, like a mother to me, from hospital today where she was with a multilobar pneumonia all week long in the same year I've lost my father just in less than a minute) on keeping your business running up where you need many people to help you in your team... you probably are less focused or even don't give a damn for deep discussions on this or that aspect of aesthetics or technique or even some other angle. 5 - Do I praise a smartphone look? Have I ever purchased an iPhone yet? (a rhetorical interrrogation to respond some other) 6 - They have delivered ProRes from an external device recording, Log and now 4K 120fps. 7 - It's not where 4K 50p/60p distinguishes from 120fps because they actually do (for some reason there's a "p" versus "fps" there ; ) 8 - I wonder then on their new thermal management which claims to be 2 to 2.5x superior now. 9 - That's where I am focused. I won't change the world, unfortunately. Apple or pure marketing other than electing the wrong one to the White House which is actually prone to bring some effective difference to our world instead wherever we belong to... phew, that is, everything else doesn't bother me at all. 10 - That said, I think of 4K 120fps on mobile side without overheating as an extra layer of income. When your team stands as your primary way of thought. So, not because of a high life standard or alike. But operating in a complex industry like this one digital has brought nowadays, any open gate for increasing our chances of a survival suit is an oxygen breath. And remember: I) The best camera is not that cinematic one but the one you're able to bring with you when you'll need to ; ) II) Digital has fiercely this meaning too. Probably why me and @eatstoomuchjam, who is the same of those other threads cine-like related but also praises miniaturization after all, both share here the same pages of this thread. - EAG :- )

  4. I still think if the uncompressed true raw look is what you're after... get the Sigma Fp-L with an SSD and set it to 2x crop mode. Digital Bolex / Magic Lantern without the hassle!

  5. The Ninja Star was relevant in the old days when electronics needed a larger box and more power simply to do a 1080p ProRes recording, Now we have such insane power in our portable cameras and even iPhone, the market for this has completely vanished. In fact it wasn't really much there in the first place because with the Ninja Star - yes you got ProRes - but no you still didn't look proper at work, because you'd be turning up with a tiny GH2 and no chonky cabled up gigascreen to pimp it out. So it didn't sell very well and that's what makes me think that the codec capabilities offered by Atomos were never the main reason for their original success... It was the $500 bolt on that gave a basic rig vague credibility on a hire.

  6. The product is becoming irrelevant On the codec side, the camera does it all now. There's no gap for Atomos to fill, not even ProRes RAW. On the monitoring side, we could do with going beyond just 3.2" screens... So it's still nice to check focus on a bigger screen. This is an ergonomic benefit, but speaking personally I have always disliked the trade off... It feels like one step forward for focussing, 10 steps back for balance, size, handling, battery life, simplicity, stealth, reliability, weather sealing, robustness and weight. So I'd rather just eyeball the EVF instead. I am convinced that Atomos customers mainly bought into the product because it was the cheapest way to make a mirrorless camera look professional in front of a client. The actual practical benefits are very questionable in my experience. So can Atomos now pivot from the dying market, into a big growth area, or will Jeromy be captain of a sinking ship? It wouldn't be the first time he's been on trouble on a boat.

  7. The whole shilling irony is that the main product they are shilling is themselves, it's not even about the brand... it's all about attention, and if shilling for Sony or some other big giant gains them that notoriety then it's all fair game. Whether or not this debases and devalues the entire medium, doesn't enter the conversation on either the side of the creator or the side of the following flock. So we have a situation now where the journalists are silenced and the shill has taken over, and the medium has turned into cable TV, with a few good quality late night niche channels, but the mainstream ones are just a big sell. Chris and Jordan started off in my view as quite objective, and all about the cameras, but have become more and more about themselves and spinning their cult of personality to a wider and wider audience. This is a problem the traditional journalist doesn't have, because he sits behind his pen and paper, the story is the notorious thing, and the writer gets to stay in the background. This prevents the kind of conflicts we see now between the clamour for attention and personal appeal, at the expense of the quality and honesty of the content.

  8. If owning 3 Ninja V's counts, I'm an Atomos customer. I still have them because the resale value isn't great - though I should just get a quote from MPB to see about swapping them all out for a Video Assist 12G. At this point, it's hard to imagine Atomos releasing a product that I would buy, both because the CEO is fucking awful and for the other reasons I outlined abovef.

  9. I'm genuinely interested to hear Atomos customer's opinions and feedback in the comeback of Jeromy. Good or bad? Indifferent? Their Apple recruit Estelle was treated extremely badly if you read what was reported in the media. In my opinion Atomos gear owners must feel a bit like those who have bought into the whole Tesla trend, spent $$ on a car, only to have Elon out himself as a drug addicted far right incel. It would make me want to sell it. Whether it be alleged substance abuse or bullying or sexual assault at the top of an organisation that relies on team work - THAT is a recipe for a serious downfall. Look at the declining fortunes of Red Bull's F1 team since the Horner sex abuse controversy. Staff CVs been going out all over, the team moral is on the floor. We of course only determine stuff second hand via journalism so I don't know what happened with Jeromy for sure other than the covid law breaking incidents that are a matter of absolute fact. None of us were there, but it leaves a very bad impression that he has been allowed back into the fold especially parachuted back into the most senior role there is.

  10. The Xiaomi 11 Ultra, yes. Superb video quality. Superb sensor. It would be a very good candidate, but the ergonomics are never going to be great with a hefty (by smartphone standards) piece of glass on the front.

  11. I remember looking at the E-M5 ii for video some years ago (due to it having IBIS, which Pana didn't have at the time). I downloaded a few test clips from reviews, saw how bad the aliasing was and stayed with Panasonic... I think I'd agree (based on my E-M1 ii & iii versus G85 & GX85 experience), but the GH5 & G9 are at a higher level of quality. especially in 1080p. Yes, video is definitely the 'poor relation' to the stills side on Oly/OMDS cameras (even on the OM-1, which is otherwise a much improved video camera over its predecessors). I'd love to be able to reduce the sharpness in 10-bit video on the OM-1 but you can't (it's close to being over-sharpened) and have a 10-bit 'Flat' or 'Natural' picture profile available. On the other hand, the simple three-level IBIS adjustment and being able to turn on and off magnify/movie tele-converter while recording are really useful. The on-camera audio is better than the Pana G85 & GX85 (which are particularly bad)... I agree. The official 'OMSYSTEM_OM-Log400_BT.2020_to_WDR_BT.709_v1.0.cube' conversion LUT seems to produce odd colours, and I've never found any 3rd party LUTs for the OM-1. After a lot of trial-and-error (and learning about LUTs) I made my own OM-Log400 BT.2020 to BT.709 LUT which I use most of the time.

  12. True, I can think of lots of firmware updates the FR-AV2 could get but not so much the F3 could do. Yes, as while the FR-AV2 is a nice two channel record, Tascam is totally AWOL in the world of prosumer or professional recorders for anything more than two channels. Where is the Tascam DR701D mk2? Where is the Tascam HS-P82 mk2? Where is the Tascam DR680 mk3? I hope the FR-AV2 is a hint that there will be a future FR-AV6 / FR-AV12 / etc in the future.

  13. Anything pales in the light of tragedy and some things give us comfort in harsh times, sometimes opportunity. For me it was the GX85 which helped me to get through and to cope. I used to carry it with me every day, not around my neck but in my backpack. I mean, Roger Deakins wouldn't carry his camera around the neck after all!:) My kindest thoughts to you and your aunt, dear Emanuel. I am sorry about your dad. I hope you can find more and more comfort day by day in your friends and your art and the positive things around you. Please forgive my harsh tone and words. best, Marty

  15. If you start with the desired aesthetic and then ask yourself what the equipment and settings are that creates that aesthetic, then you quickly realise that anything above 24/25/30p is a specialist tool. For me, 60p conformed to 24/25/30p creates an aesthetic that is surreal. If the subject motion is significant then it can pass for reality but through a highly intense emotional lens. I've seen shots that were 60p but didn't look unnatural in situations of extreme grief, shock, and euphoria due to love, drugs, or adrenaline. The aesthetic of 120p conformed to 24/25/30p is absolutely into the territory of a special effect. I filmed dozens of hours of footage from my kids sports games in 120p and am very familiar with the look, and it screams at the viewer that they're watching special effects footage. This is appropriate for heavily stylised content such as fight scenes or extreme action shots that take place outside reality, for example movies that are set in someone's mind or in virtual reality etc. 120p doesn't align with our senses observing our reality, except perhaps if there was an incredible amount of drugs involved. The other potential uses for 120p or slower is to see things that aren't noticeable to the naked eye. Documentaries showing animals doing thing very quickly like frogs shooting their tongues at bugs, birds diving into water to catch fish etc. This is a special effect but a useful one to extend our perception in time. The Slowmo Guys on YT make great use of this. The upgrade of a smartphone from 1080p120 to 4k120 is of almost zero practical use in film-making. Discussion of it at length outside of a very narrow niche can only be academic or fetishistic.

  16. An interesting mod, looks irreversible - but still worth it. The Xiaomi 12s ultra would be a good candidate for this too.

  17. Sure - one thing that might be nice in terms of not missing the moment is that now you can raise the phone and push a button and it will instantly load a photo/video app which is faster than it used to be. But if you're worried about missing a moment, no amount of speed improvement will help. A lot of people prefer a bigger phone! If I could, I'd take an even smaller phone. If they put the 16 Pro guts in a 16 body, I'd probably take that instead. The ideal would be a Zoolander-sized smartphone (maybe it could have a projector for the screen). 😀 You can turn down the screen brightness a lot if heat genearted by the screen is a concern. I meant to try it the other time, but my attention span isn't so long. It's the same thing that I realized during the brief time when I considered becoming a YouTube camera reviewer. Maybe I'll try again today. I could point it out the window or something and leave it while I work.

  18. I think most customers only care about what they are getting for their money and not about the ethics of businesses. Those things can affect some people's decision-making, of course, but usually it is only the purse that they look at. Also if Atomos were to leave the market then wouldn't Blackmagic effectively have a monopoly? That would not be good for the consumer even if it were temporarily good for Blackmagic owners. I don't have an external recorder but things that would be nice to have (and I believe are available from Atomos) include more physical connections, a larger, HDR capable screen, larger and less expensive storage per TB, less risk of overheating than internal recording in high quality, the option of recording to two media at the same time (e.g., Nikon cameras don't support video recording on two cards simultaneously but this can be done using external recorders by recording both internally and externally), custom LUTs, streaming accessories with wireless capabilities, tally indicators etc. I don't see how these products would become obsolete even though the quality of internal recording has improved. Most professional video setups I see at large events (such as sports events and concerts) use external monitors and often there are streaming setups as well. How competitive a particular brands' products are at a given time is a bit beside the point because if there is only one major manufacturer, prices will go up and development will slow down.
