  1. Perhaps film is growing faster (from a very low starting point) than digital cameras. Doesn't mean there are more of them being sold though! This video merely refers to one brand (Fujfilm, who dominate the film niche of new sales with their Instax subbrand). And it's including not just the sales of the cameras, but the film too (which can easily stack up to being even more than the camera itself!). So the headline of the video ("😱 Film is BACK and Outselling Mirrorless Cameras!") is totally misleading and false, as this isn't at all true for the wider camera industry once you add in Sony/Nikon/Panasonic/Pentax/Leica/etc sales.

    Beetlejuice

So, I’m an amateur with zero training, but I saw the sequel and it was abysmal. Michael Keaton kept it alive for the duration but man the writing and PC culture behind it was bad. anyway, I’m watching the original and I’m BLOWN AWAY. The rich pastel colors, the detail combined with soft images etc, make the original so much more appealing than the sequel visually! Cinematic and filmic are real terms worth using daily. I can’t think of any digital image that rivals what I am seeing from the original Eastman film stock of Beetlejuice. id love to Get this pastel softness with deep colors and image on my log footage (iPhone and dlogm)

    Leica Q3 43

I've been printing recently. It's so hard to see differences these days between sensor formats. Granted, I don't print much about A4, but I don't have the wall space or budget for much bigger. I think many people buy Leica because they're tired of getting "lost" in GAS- there is something enticing to that concept. Just put all the money you have for gear into ONE camera with a fixed lens. Now, you can ONLY create with that. There's something liberating in that.

    Leica Q3 43

I have a Q3 (have had previous Qs too) and I love it, I think the lens is amazing with a lovely character. I carry it with me everywhere and for me it was worth the price - would I like it if I could buy a similar camera for less from another manufacturer? Yes of course but there isn't one that fits the bill from my point of view. Namely, bright fast 28mm lens, rugged build, fantastic evf on the left of the body, superb full frame sensor with a lovely output and all in a relatively light package. I will keep it for a few years and it will still be worth a few quid, probably will end up costing me £25 a week which for something that gives me a lot of pleasure is a bargain in my book.

  5. I don't see how the external recorder market can be sustained. I used a Ninja Star around 2015 with the 5D3 and whatever A7 version we were on, and even back then with the clear visual benefit of ProRes, the ridiculousness of using a HDMI cable and bolting a box on the camera was apparent. At that time, anyone could tell that external recorders were a short term investment--never more than one or two generations ahead of internal recording specs. If I worked at Atomos, I'd push leadership to build some new products. Edit: I suppose Atomos does make decent monitors which will continue to be a market. However, I wouldn't call them the top of the tech game, even for that, compared to a lot of the monitors with builtin wireless these days.

  6. It is fun fun fun times, both my main career (filmmaking) and my backup / previous career (i.e. the CS/IT world) are going through very rough patches right now. Want to go back to how it was a couple of years ago when I could be working 100hr weeks if I wished (& I did!).

  8. The Atomos stuff can be a bit fussy sometimes over its HDMI input source but this would do the trick to get it into a Ninja for example if you were using composite or s-video sources. Alternatively, if you are using component output gear then this one would do the job.

  9. Why should people buy any Atomos product? They shouldn't. Atomos is a terrible company who moved a while ago from selling customers a working tool and supporting it to trying to build new revenue streams from their existing customer base. The whole reason to release a "new" Ninja V model seems to have been to release the same hardware again, but with a few licenses that were an additional cost on the original NInja V (such as H.265), but that nobody in their right mind was going to buy (why would I get a Ninja V to record in the codec that my camera already uses?)... difference in price for the new monitor? Basically the cost of buying those add-ons for the original. It's also why getting the activation code for ProRes RAW for the Ninja V went from a simple basic website where you entered a serial number and it gave you an activation code - now the site forces you to register and wade through a bunch of ads (for things like add-on software licenses) before you can register it. Meanwhile, you take the Video Assist 12G out of a box, plug in your camera, and start recording BM Raw. And that's all in addition to the bad press, sexual harassment allegations, covid fuckery, etc. If Atomos are struggling, they have only themselves and their own terrible choices to blame.
