Based on focal length alone, I'd rather have 18-40. No idea about optical quality, but I've often found 28mm to be too long for landscapes, and it's pretty easy to crop if I need a 50mm FOV. However I'm also going to make a guess that the R8 is more comfortable to hold. I don't particularly like the grip shape on the S5 series. I miss handling the NX1.

I was hoping they would come to their senses and do this for the first update. Still not for everyone of course. But at the used price of $1,000 it still a deal for what it can do and will be a nice little 3rd cam for me in the kit. Full frame pocket anamorphic with LUMIX stabilizing is really cool. Now I just need to get my little Yashica 1.5x dialed in and can have some fun.

Word on the street (heard a bit cryptically this week from a Panasonic rep) is to wait for a February 2025 announcement, most likely a new S-series cam 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Hopefully we won't be disappointed!

I'm no expert, but I can clearly see some avenues where Lumix has chosen to put their energy: PDAF (The AF has seen crazy amounts of innovation in only 20 months) Processing (Computational features like Live Composite mode and Hybrid Zoom) Tools (In many cases, these are another level above the competition, especially for anamorphic) Their approach seems like one for the long term, with above-the-neck implementations that others don’t have. Now, they need to give us a body that includes a slightly more modern sensor—not even the latest and greatest (though that would be welcome). Again, they’re releasing firmware that includes NEW features for old cameras. That should be celebrated. Give us consistency and reliability, not just the checkboxes that say '4K 120fps 10bit 4:2:2 with AF and no crop.' For my usage, as long as the focus is on 24fps and image quality with tons of tools, that’s money better spent.

The record limit in the first place was really dumb

It seems that your first one had some hw issue on top of the bugs. I tested IBIS with the old FW at 14mm (IS lens) and 16mm (no IS lens) handheld fast panning, slow panning, tilting and twisting and I could not see the same wobble issue that the R5 had. If is still there very much improved. Since updating to the new FW I have shot 2 more hockey matches and 1 additional show jumping competition, and I did not encounter any issue. I will be selling my R5c for a second R5 II as soon as I find one in stock that here in Switzerland seems impossible to find. I can confirm that the AF, battery life and the image quality vs R5c the R5 II is definitely better. Just now I was editing a video that I shot with both R5 II and R5c both in RAW and the image of R5 II is just better and can take more beating in post. One thing that is not super is the auto WB, the R5c is more consistent. Frame grab 8k 50, ISO 4000, no noise reduction, shot through a Plexiglas...

I agree 100% that it is getting harder and harder to make a living in this industry. What makes it even harder and what hasn't yet been mentioned is that the price of everything is also going up, so not only do you have more and more clients who want things for free or lower cost, your own cost of living is increasing exponentially. I still will never forget a really badly exposed cell phone mirror photo of Kim Kardashian got over 100M views and true masterpieces from some of the top photographers in the world would be lucky to get 1,000 views. These days true talent and art are not appreciated at all, what matters to the current generation is who is in the picture or video and what they are doing, not the level of skill or years of knowledge needed to create it. I personally have been affected by the current trends as well, I had to give up some of my service offerings because the level of effort vs what the clients were willing to pay meant I would be making less than minimum wage after expenses and my time were accounted for. Residential Real Estate Photography/Video, Weddings, and a few others I have dropped completely unless something really high end comes my way. I will say though that for the niche I specialize in (events, promo videos/photography, etc.) social media has also opened new doors for me. I do freelance photography/video work for some of the big ad agencies in my area and even at that level their clients are obsessed with social media. They literally host events with social media in mind, and where I come in is they hire me to film them. I filmed more private VIP social media inspired events this year than ever before and to these clients money is no obstacle as long as it produces something that will generate useable social media content. More big names than ever before are trying to reach new clients on social media and they hire people like me to create their content. They also scour social media to see what their competition is doing and send me their work and ask if I can create something like that for them; it is so odd using 8K capable cameras and thousands of dollars worth of gear to create 30-60s worth of content that will be viewed at 480P in the worst aspect ratio and orientation possible that its almost laughable. I literally had to rethink the way that I shoot and completely focus on anything that will grab the audience's attention for 2 seconds vs trying to be artistic or create content that truly took planning and was challenging to create because that's what my clients want because that's what their audience wants. Anyone who hasn't seen the movie Idiocracy should check it out, it feels like that future is already here in many ways.

There's another devious slight of hand with Facebook and the socials, in that if they encouraged or even facilitated longer posts and content like a blog article with multiple photos and videos, their business model would suffer as the ads would get less time and attention, if everyone was to read long articles. So the reason they are making everyone ADHD dopamine addicts, killing livelihoods and long form content is purely for the ad $$$$ Cynical bastards or what?

I remember similar stuff in 1996, here's me a teenager at college... They had very early cable internet, which was a huge step up from the home modem. The crap is held aloft and in high regard by people. You only have to look at some of the videos in this thread 🙂 I find Facebook a mixed bag... There's some very good group content, user generated stuff like Reddit has. But it never has room to breathe. A photo, with a caption... max... Then you scroll past. It never goes anywhere... it's orphaned content, without a home or any parents. And Facebook has a certain demographic too... Not many younger voices on there. It's practically a boomer platform! If you for example are a 1990s PC game enthusiast on Facebook you can get a dopamine hit with a rush of likes by posting a photo of your setup and how nostalgic it is... fine... Erm, do that on a blog and you have a livelihood. You're a publisher, writer and journalist whereas on Facebook you're NOTHING but an end-user to be monetised for sake of Mr Zuckenberg. Bloom is an interesting example as he started off 80% professional cameraman, 20% blogger and ended up 10% professional, 90% social media influencer. The influencer role is bad for your mental health and has a very short career-span of perhaps 10 years maximum before the companies get bored of you. And it leaves you a hollow shell of a person, who has shilled his reputation away... and his credibility. This is because they are trying to get off the endless treadmill and save their mental health. Thanks for that observation it has cheered me up. Nearly outlived DPReview as well which never expected to do 🙂 Haha.

Andrew, excuse me for going a bit off topic. But I regard EOSHD and your work. I came to photography and videography as a hobby and now it has become part of my full time job. I remember my first steps on the internet, like paying 1€ at the internet-cafe to watch the trailer for star wars because my internet at home was so slow 😄 But I learned a lot from early video tutorials (ryan wieber for lightsabers and videocopilot, even though his tutorials became kinda stale), online forums and blogs were a great source of knowledge and information, with some strange guys of course, but thats the nature of it. Nevertheless, a community and as long as there´s no gatekeeper, great exchange was possible. the evolution of youtube into "cable tv" is in fact really bad. sure, you don´t have to like every aspect and genre a platform offers, but the amount of crap content and nonsens is enormous. Facebook is a similar thing. I began using it very early and it was great to stay in contact with my friends after leaving school and starting university. the first versions of the app and the messenger, all nice additions and well integrated. but what is it now? my feed is basically 90% braindead, idiotic, AI-created shit that I am supposed to look at. I only log in because I manage some accounts for work and I to use some groups for knowledge in resolve and audio recording. but facebook as it was intended is long gone. I still think that youtube, besides all the shit, still is a source of great information and knowledge. but you have to dig through a lot of mudd to reach the gold. The thing is, a lot of the accounts and characters i dislike, gain a lot of attraction for some reason. I just want to support overacting, narcicistic media prostitutes, that praise each and every product as long as there´s some reward for them. To some part that is the case for the mentioned cat owner. It became a 50% work 50% my life show, where the ration before was maybe 80:20. Me personally, I don´t watch this kind of television, I despise all forms of "reality TV" and scripted BS productions. If I look at the accounts I subscribed on YouTube, a lot of them haven´t posted for quite a while. Some of them do, but either with a lot of partnerships, product placements etc. If some of them can talk about this and make things transparent, I may be willing to watch it, but as soon as there´s clear bias I´m out. So many clips have become 70% this is the best product ever, it can make your dreams come true, just buy it and you will see, 30% real information and something you can take away and learn. I´d like blogging to make a return. Maybe in a typewriter font and with 800px only image sizes. back to basics, information and knowledge first. I´d like that. And on a side note: EOSHD not only kept the name, it even survived forums like BMDuser and others, that just died a slow death or ended instantly.

The other day I randomly observed an interaction between an instagram influencer and her follower in comments section of one of her reels where she was bragging about an old compact Sony handycam she found on ebay and loved the image "vibe", which means the worst quality you expect from some P&S cameras. The follower said I love that camera makers increase resolution in every generation and we sill looking for crappy film look! (Btw, that wasn't film look at all, it was 30fps washed out ccd soap opera video). And the influencer replied resolution is for commercials! This should be a wake up call for everybody in this industry (not just Japanese, but even DJI and Apple): these people don't care anymore! All they need/want is vertical 30fps 2MP image! Then I asked myself am I even prepared to market my art/content to these consumers? We're in such a "fad economy" that "better" becomes obsolete, and "worse" sells better! Those who know what will be the next worse thing, make tons of money; and people like us have to check how much we earned today through "buy me a coffee" link lol.

Social media is destroying the internet as a medium and turning it into cable tv. I don't think people will realise what this means until a lot later, but now that print media is going away along with a lot else, including proper journalism, we're about to enter the find out stage. The internet as it was originally intended with net neutrality was the greatest invention of the century and we are really harming it by making independent .com websites bankrupt and the written word obsolete. It's going to become more and more of a problem. Maybe one day, blogging will make a come back like vinyl? I remember when a certain cat owner, who went by the name of Philip, switched predominantly to social media tweets and youtube, rather than blogging... his own site is now dead basically, and his content is now at the whim of an algorithm he doesn't own or have any control over... Anyway, he switched, and HE became the story - front and centre, private life out there for all to see, and it clouded out his actual work and images... and the other point I'm making is that he had no choice anyway because smartphones work better with YouTube and social media, the large in depth pages of the web just don't work well with modern attention spans or small screens with no physical keyboard, especially since most of the WWW these days is such a mess - so much poor content and horrific web design... you know, ads everywhere, popups, autoplay, cookie prompts, constantly scrolling by itself as new elements load. It's unworkable. I want us to come back to the founding ideas of what made the internet so special, before it's too late.

My GFX 100 II already records 8K. It's with a heavy crop and with unimpressive RS, but it's 8K at least.

With Canon's new C400 shipping with a brand new detachable USB-C based monitor, I've been musing on whether it might be compatible with the R5C with a firmware update, similar to what Canon did to make the C200's LM-V1 monitor compatible with the C300 MKII. As far as the technical side goes, it seems like both the R5C and C400 have the exact same USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. Also, I did not know this but page 123 of the R5C's video manual seems to confirm that it can output a max 8K 30p resolution via its USB-C port. I also made a call to Canon USA tech support, and while the person could not confirm that the C400's monitor would be made compatible with the R5C, they did not outright deny that is was technically impossible. Now obviously I can't be sure the person I spoke to was a reliable source. I also think there might be a chance that while the R5C and the C400 have the same USB-C port, that the amount of power they can support might be different. All that said, it seems like there is a chance that at least technically speaking the C400's monitor (along with its coveted touch screen AF features) could be compatible with the R5C, which imo would be a fantastic addition to its feature set. Particularly for gimbal use. I've included a pic of the C400 with its monitor attached to an RS3 Pro to demonstrate what I'm getting at! Anyways, it would be great if the more tech savvy amongsr use could do their own digging to see if this is indeed true. But either way it probably wouldn't hurt to nudge Canon so at the very least they know there is demand for such a firmware update from R5C and maybe even C70 owners (altho I'm not sure if the C70 has the same USB-C port).

I believe it only offers a S35 crop. Due to the compression methods from the 6K sensor, some say that the S35 crop is superior... but I didn't buy a FF camera to shoot in S35. And the difference is probably minimal and I don't care about minimal. But as usual, I'm probably the weirdo here, because I still prefer good 1080p over run of the mill 4K. For instance, I mentioned earlier that I think some lenses shine with certain cameras. After thorough testing, most lenses look pretty good in 4K. By that I mean, most vintage lenses have a certain level of sharpness that is good enough due to the 4K. In fact, I think vintage lenses help to tame the sharpness... resolution of 4K. Now with my 5D3/ML Raw, some of those same lenses just don't work. But with a more modern lens, the image looks really good, in my opinion better than the FP. Here's a shot from the 5D3 with the older non-Art Sigma 50mm 1.4... And here are a couple shots of the Takumar on the 5D3... Obviously, they're different shots so in some ways they're incomparable... And here's a B&W shot with the Tak on the 5D3 that's a lot more interesting... So what's my point... I have way more options than I need and B&W makes everything look cooler. That is all.

The two quick fixes that they should do is offering a battery grip that allows 8k 50/60 basically solving the battery issue and re-enable video in photo mode (why not give user the choice? They could even have a custom function that you can enable and disable video mode in photo). If you don't use 8k50/60 the battery grip makes it more useable, I use mine a lot in 8k 50 RAW so I have the V-Mount battery with USB-PD mounted over the cage. Not great but the only other camera than can do 8k RAW 50/60 is the Nikon Z9 or REDs... But we are really off topic this should belong on the R5c thread and not the R6 II one.
