    FX30 first outing

Went to Manchester for the firs time (at 60!) and it's very photogenic - I will definitely be returning (with a tripod).

  2. The S5 is a really great value, especially used. The AF isn't nearly as bad as people say, and manual focusing is a dream. There are better cameras out there but none of them are a better value. There has never been a better option for budget filmmaking IMO and I'd be hard pressed to say that any other camera out right now is worth the price difference on what you'd pay for this camera used. Think about what we paid for our first "real" camera and then think about how you can get a used full frame camera with pretty much every pro feature you could ask for for like $1000 USD used. 10 years ago my mind would have been unable to comprehend the value that is the S5 in 2024. I very much like my S5II X and will likely switch out my two S5 bodies for two S5II bodies in the next couple of years, but I do like the image out of the original S5 more. It's just really pleasing. No longer needing to color match them and enjoying the quality of life upgrades on the S5II outweighs the better image, but the S5II image is more than "good enough." I think I'll also end up probably getting an S9 as a personal/super low profile camera. It's actually nearly the perfect BTS/social media camera for my event shoots. Being able to hand it off to someone to film content for our IG, Facebook, and YouTube reels would be really great since it can shoot in open gate and be cropped for each platform.

  3. If you are interested, I have a free 3D LUT Analyzer tool on my website. Here is how it looks with the N-Log_BT2020_to_REC709_BT1886_size_33.cube applied to a LUT Stress Test image: When you click and hold either the picture, or the RGB parade, or the vectorscope, you can view the "before" state. You can also drag and rotate the 3D Visualization.

Thanks. IBIS and AS in camera, then some stabilisation in post. Like I say, I'm taking a tripod next time!

Nice! Did you use IBIS or gyro for stabilization? I definitely see some catch-up jerkiness in the pans and some of the tilts so assume IBIS.

  7. Just picked up an S5 for 764 Euros to replace my GH2 for live streaming. I'm not sure anyone will notice anything meaningful on the other end, but damn, the image is great even at 1080p. Iโ€™ve decided to dedicate it to all my vintage glass. To celebrate, I found an absolute gemโ€”the Pentax 28mm f/3.5 (K version, not the M version). I had that lens before but regrettably sold it (note to self: 'Donโ€™t sell vintage glass for peanuts!'). I used it on the A7RII for about a yearโ€”it was great, but I can already tell Panasonic is definitely going to elevate my footage for video.

  9. But S5 and S1 have they same processing and image, right? @Beritar Doesn't the og S5 also sport open gate? Have you encountered pinkish blotches/posterization on evenly lit skin in Vlog 10bit 422 150mbit? It occured to me when filming skin with heavy makeup. HLG in that mode seemed without it. I always loved the GH5 in HLG in 10bit HD All-Intra btw. Beautiful image.

  10. 720mbit for 6k 16:9 sounds reasonable, that's h264 All-Intra then? Macroblocks is always a yikes. But desert surfaces also provide very homgenous surfaces, a challenge for many codecs under heavy grading. I have not encounterd any on S1, S1H at 4K 10bit 150mbit but and that is a big one I have encounterd blotchy posterization on redish skin in Vlog. So a paid beauty shot would make me test again. HLG in 10bit 422 seemed more robust for even skintones on a few occations. I find it pretty daring to take a camera to the desert, especially a package like yours. So, great work I must say again for various reasons of which I've mentioned some in my post above. I would love to see your skills and your Fuji gems on faces and human subjects! Don't bother for me with an extra upload, maybe for others. I don't have a machine for 6K h264 at the moment. But thank you very much for offering.

  11. Hi! well it's a mixed bag. the 720mbps feels that it offers a lot of room for grading. I could only compare it to A1 10 bit and A7s iii 10bit, and it is very comparable, but i think it's stronger than SONY. The bitrate is just massive. I think the a7s tops at 150mbps at 4k and A1 at 520mbps for 8k. But it does shows small block after a heavy grade such as this. I used blur at the out of focus areas at certain scenes. it does offer however other formats directly to ssd, i think even RAW ? ProRes goes for sure. It is fully weather sealed so I readw the blog from Michael Clark (https://blog.michaelclarkphoto.com) where he puts the camera through the worst conditions. I shot it at Dunes of Maspalomas at Gran Canaria. Easy to get to even on foot. It is big one could spend days exploring there. If you want I can upload the originals for you ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers, Michal

  12. Yes, the S5 is still a great camera, AF-C s is pretty bad with most Sigma DG DN lenses though. I prefer the S5 to my S5II, but I like the S1 even more, the 5,9K and Open Gate are crazy good, nicer image quality than the S5II, better detail (like a raw file), no oversharpening and no chroma noise reduction. The image is very similar to the Nikon Z6III 6k raw, but with slightly better IBIS and of course worse AF.

Nice! I think the FLC is a bit of a game changer for trying to get higher-end looks with non-cine-cameras. You could get most of the same results doing things manually, but it makes it so much easier and faster to do that it really unlocks it. What lens(es) did you use?

  14. I didn't know about this issue with the update. Even moreso, the original S5 seems a very compelling choice as a personal camera.@Attila Bakos Not even to speak about used market prices. S5D, or whatever the relaunched original S5 is called, should have been updated with a full Hdmi to make it suitable for hasslefree wireless video monitoring and being the perfect entry into A Cam territory for a variety of film and video work. Micro Hdmi on an otherwise nearly perfect Dslm is still a heartbreaker. S1 is too big. S1H, though just as big, feels like a marvel and kinda worth the weight. Still, og S5 with full hdmi, so compelling to think of.

  15. I understand the joke you were making about the dumb image being as useful as the original video, and I, as someone who saw the original title and video, and have some familiarity with the video author, chuckled at the picture. All I'm saying is that I also understand SRV's annoyance that to a random passerby who doesn't read the whole thread, his name is on a post that is no longer the content he posted. Thats regardless of who SRV is as a person (who i havent interacted with before), or the original post itself (which I thought was pointless, and orignally ignored). that's why I said it wasn't life or death as an ironic understatement. I'm not upset in any way. I thought andrgl's post was a bit harsh, so I spoke up. if I came across as upset or in support of rumor mill youtube videos, that was a miscommunication on my part.

  16. After thinking a lot about it, I do think the S5 (original) is where it's at in terms of value. I'd rather deal with manual focus than tripods and gimbals.

  17. I agree with @SRV1981. Totally fair for Andrew to decide what is or isn't posted in his forum by deleting content or adding editor's notes, but I don't think it's good practice to change what a user wrote. @SRV1981 did not post the content that it looks like he posted and I think users should have the right to not be misrepresented as saying something they didnt, even if they don't pay hosting fees. I don't pay hosting fees on Facebook either. And I know in this case it's not life or death. I'm just saying I would be annoyed if my username was labeled as the author of something I didn't write or post.

  21. Who says I changed what a user wrote? Replacing a misleading and spammy youtube video with a picture is not doing that. And it sends a message that if you don't check your sources, or post poor quality outlinks, you will have it deleted. That's not about being unfair, that's about good moderation. Why are you indulging an entitled whiner? The joke was made clear by me in the comments and there are far greater controversies you should be upset about, maybe gaza or something, but not this.
